I don't see any setting that indicates if phone is connecting to 802.11n router at n or g, but the adapter software for my USB Asus N53 Dual-Band WLAN drops to g when the phone is on wi-fi and goes back to n if I turn phone off. I don't know why phone wouldn't connect at n. Frequency is set to Auto but 2.4 Mhz does the same thing. Router is set to 2.4 to allow g devices, although I don't think we have any left in the house. Would going to 5 Mhz force n connection?

Yes it would... connect to the 5Ghz side... and change the 2.4 radio to N only if you don't have anything G...

Okay, I did change to 5 Ghz and that fixed the problem, but now my Netgear Extender is unhappy. <sigh> This router doesn't offer yes or no for 2.4 when 5 is selected, but that may be because it's a fairly new model. Off to work on new issue. Thanks.
Give both the networks different names, set the 2.4 back like it was, powercycle the extender...

Life should be so simple. I checked the specs and the problem is too obvious...it doesn't support 5 Ghz. Amazing as this is a current product. So I either buy one that does (this one was given me by the cable company to support their modem/router) or live with dropping down to g with S3. But why wouldn't phone simply connect to extender in n by default? Is there another place in phone to set default protocol?

Sorry, I think I'm confused on this. I checked question because that's what it was, not realizing that meant it had to be in Q&A. Don't know where that is relative to AT&T S3 section.
My guess is the extended is only capable of G and the phone is connecting to that.... have to networks with 2 names... use the extended to repeat the 2.4 but connect the phone to the 5...

Actually, the extender runs n, but only at 2.4, and the modem/router can only run 2.4 or 5...don't see any dual-band capability. The extender does have a separate name. I suppose I could set phone for router and ignore extender, but how do I know if S3 is in n or g protocol? If not n, it will force router to g.

I purchased my phone shortly after launch, so I've had it for a while. Every now and then, I'll randomly perform a speed test through the Speedtest.net app. I've noticed that I've never gotten more than 10mbps down when connected via Wi-Fi, even though I have a 50mbps connection -- on LTE, I've gotten up to 20mbps. I've also tested the phone on other Wi-Fi networks, with the same result.
People often say that the online speed tests aren't 100% accurate, so I decided to test the phone using iperf. I used a Linux machine with a direct ethernet connection to the router as the iperf server. I ran several tests, and they all came back with ~10mbps.
Is this normal, or do I have a defective phone that needs to be taken back to AT&T? What's the warranty on these phones, btw? I bought it off-contract at an AT&T retail store.
No, I can get my full internet connection speed through my phone (15mbps). I'd suggest running the test when you the phone is physically closer to the wireless router.

I've tested on both G and N, as well as 2.4GHz and 5GHz. I've done all my tests within arms reach of the router.

Got me stumped then.
The phone connects at G not N, it doesn't have 5GHz capabilities.
The best on N connection (300mbps) PC to PC on my home network, is about sustain 12MB/sec (megabytes/sec), that's about 96mbps which is actually pretty good for N 300mbps.
The phone best can do is 1MB/sec, which is about what I was getting on G network card PC to PC, therefor it seems this phone doesn't actually have N connection
These statistics are pure amateur stats using NetMeter on PC and Traffic Monitor on phone.
My router doesn't show actual connection speed of a device

You could see connection speed in wifi settings by tapping on connected network.

You're right, it doesn't have 5GHz capabilities. My mistake. I did my iperf tests on two different routers, an ASUS RT-N66U (stock) and Linksys WRT54GL (w/ DD-WRT). I forgot that my phone only connects to the 2.4GHz band of the ASUS router.
Anyways, do believe that it does have N capabilities. It's listed in the specs. It's just that we don't get anything close to N speeds.

It doesn't seem to be related to that though. I only have G wifi at home, and I can get 1.5MB/sec (12mbps) which is my maximum internet speed without any issue.
Have you tried running a speed test on a different wifi network?

Not necessarily. Some routers can do better than 54mbps on wireless-G if the device supports it. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/125_High_Speed_Mode
Dunno if that's actually what's happening though.

it does not. Samsung focus s did. The hd7, lumia 710 and 900 do not.
I can confirm. My Focus S saw and connected to my 5Ghz wireless with no problems.
The Lumia 900 doesn''t even 'see' it.
Just out of curiousity, what would you do with an N connection on your phone?

for me , I just want to connect with what's available. But I have the same type of question around camera quality..why do you expect voque quality pics from from a phone camera placed in your pocket.

I assume you're asking why would I need a 5GHz connection and not a 2.4GHz connection: both can be 802.11n.
The reason is simple in my case. From various spots in my apartment, there's upwards of 25 different wireless connections on the 2.4GHz band. There's zero on the 5GHz band. If I'm connected on 2.4GHz, I'm lucky to get a signal 20 feet from my router.

No, I am asking what the benefit of a potential 300MB(N) connection VS 10MB(B) or 54MB(G) to a cell phone would be considering most home internet is in the 1MB to 10MB range.
So essentially, what does one need a 300MB connection to their cell phone?
However, in your case I assume you only have N on the 2.4G band and no B or G ?

I think it could be useful if you do the "Wireless Sync" option with Zune. 300MB/s internal network speeds would make wireless syncing a lot faster.
But now that I think about it - since wireless syncing usually happens at night, while you're asleep, and your phone is charging... super fast speeds probably aren't need anyway.

With my current router i just get 65mbps, but only when i am right next to the router.
I was thinking of getting a wireless router one of those 450Mbps 2.4/5.0Ghz.

The HTX One X does have a dual band radio, so yes it can use either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. As for max speeds on most mobile devices these won't be great because of a few reasons like single antenna and power saving.
Having said that in the advanced wireless settings you can enable a setting for better wireless performance but it does warn that this will suck much more battery life. I haven't played with this myself but it may be worth trying to see what it does for you.

I am getting low speeds when using wifi on GS3 compared to my computer and brothers nexus 4. In my room which is the room next to the living room with the router I get about 16-20 mbps on 2.4 ghz and about 8-10 on 5ghz. My brother was getting about 40mbps on his nexus and my computer about 46 mbps.
What can I do to fix?

You could try on the ROM to set for one frequency band only instead of Auto. For example, 2.4 and not 5ghz. Also, your Router's admin page could give preference to a particular device with QoS settings.
Maybe reboot the router and cable modem/dsl to see if that might help.
It's a possibility you could try to change the wifi channel you are connecting on as well. It may be set as auto but may get interference. I would only caution, the laptops seems to have higher powered antennas and our phones usually aren't terribly high power so they may have the possibility of being susceptible to more interference whereas the laptop is not.
Get inSSIDer from the play store. It will help you find the best wifi channel.

I turned QoS off, speeds on every other device are great except for the phone itself. Like I said my bro standing next to me and my laptop in my room got around 40mbps (nexus 4) and my laptop got around 46-48 mbps while my S3 was only able to pull near 20mbps. I've tried limiting my frequency scans to 2.4ghz or 5ghz only and have not noticed any differences. Actually 5ghz seems to be slower which is weird since my bro and my phone are the only ones able to connect to that band. You guys think changing wifi drivers would make a difference in my phone? I know different kernels have different wifi drivers built in.

Regardless, I think your router isn't setup correctly then. I only have a 450Mbps connection with a Nighthawk R7900 and I max out with speed tests on my Pixel 2 XL, my Alienware Laptop with the Intel 9260 WiFi card, my wife's MacBook Pro, and her iPhone 8.

I think you need to do some reading about how to setup your specific model or read reviews about your specific model. Just because it's provided to you does not mean it is a good product.
Sharing my settings will do nothing for you, even if we have the same model because WiFi signals can be affected by your home layout and your neighbors WiFi if they're close to your home.

Agreed. Personally, I turned off the WiFi from my router with my provider and have a two device mesh network WiFi.

Never heard of it but I checked the specs and although it's rated for 1300 Mbits/s, I don't know how close you'll actually hit that. Let us know.
