I have never gone android and from the specs it is going to be a great phone. Dear members will I be disappointed if I get rid of my leo and go for it? What is the main differences between windows pc and android ? Or would you rather I wait for windows 7 I am used to. But I am greatly interested!
Not much of an answer, but I'm definitely looking at replacing my HD2/Leo with a Desire HD. It really is the phone I've been waiting for HTC to come out with.
For me its Android over anything,
The main difference is that android if very customizable and all open source, you wont be disappointed if you ditch your Leo for this phone, specs wise its amazing and now that is running new HTC sence UI. I think that you will be very happy with Android.

I think I will be replacing my HD2 with this. Been running Android on my HD2 for a few days, and I love it. Given that the Desire HD is the same size, and better hardware than the HD2, I think it's a winner!
I as well have The HD2 with the android running and also helped 2 other peple get their HD2's setup with android. I love it over windows. The windows pretty customizable to a certain point and I do like it too but like is not the word for the android stuff. I had the G1 and it took a cyanogen beating and kept on ticking. And then I went to the HD2 and as soon as I saw roms for it Ii went to town on it but I slammed on the brakes with the froyo rom from Darkstone and Its whats running right now. So to say Im looking forward to this Desire Phone is an understatement. Im real excited WOO!
Load up Android on your HD2 and take it for a test drive. They have a bunch of choices in the HD2 forum so you can get a feel for it to see if you like it.
If wealthy, buy Desire HD.
If not so well off, try Android on HD2, if it you like it and want to pay for extra hardware on Desire HD you can wait until no longer brand new tech, and price drops a little.
If not cash rich, wait for Desire HD rom to be ported onto HD2 to replace WinMo.
All you lose is extra 3 megs on camera (not a big deal)
Extra internal memory (can do without)
Slightly faster cpu.
Movie playback quality?
The Desire HD is great but nothing special above the HD2..I mean sure it's primary Os is Android but that's all you get. The Hd2 runs Android,Wm and Ubuntu,if that's not cool enough then i dnt knw wat is. IMO the HD2 will most likely become the phone of legends, something that fathers tell their kids about wen their not busy admiring its sheer brilliance,the one that broke all the rules *And yes i'm aware of the D'HD specs,which r tempting but not worth sacrificing the Hd2*
This is just the beginning teaser for Android superphone HTC & GSM. I see the HD2, EVO & D'HD pretty much being the same phone, different shell and different OS. In that light the format is a year old.
To quote them, HTC was/is brilliantly and quietly deliberate in having the Android-GSM masses salivate from across fences they could not or would not cross. It's almost classic Apple (and believe me, I hate both Apple and admitting it).
When the HD2 released, and lets be honest, gimped with WinMo, there was a secret vault deep in the bowels of HTC with a killer phone that could pretty much end the consumer refresh cycle for 3+yrs.
Just look at the G1. One of the secret beauties of Android is that in the right circumstances, you can stretch a platform way beyond it's intended life. An Android HD2/GSM EVO would have been such a beast.
They didn't release it because it was technically not viable, lol. No. Because doing so would have been an early check mate.
Yes the competition would either have been scorched in such a scenario or, heaven forbid, cornered into a cold war where they might actually have delivered real value versus their stock and trade hype.
At the same time though, HTC would have cannibalized their entire line-up/sales inbetween. Plus there was the issue of giving an allowance for symbiosis between the hardware, the market and the Android platform to come to fruition.
Now we have the D'HD, why? Because the other OEM's, Gingerbread, dual cores and GPU's are on the horizon.
The next 3-9 months will be beautiful.

I like the optimism and brand patriotism in that post. But unfortunately due to the amount of sheep who see the iPhone as the be-all and end-all of mobile technology, the platform if used to it's full potential still wouldn't have been able to take away a decent enough chunk of the iPhone sales.
The main reason is marketing. Apple have an army of marketing geniuses, with a bank balance to replace the ocean with. Coupled with the "elitist" angle that apple have, people have, do, and will continue to buy them because they don't know any better. If anyone saw the HTC Evo vs iPhone 4 video, you'll know what I mean - because it's the unfortunate truth.
When the HD2 came out, HTC were still relatively unheard of in the grand scheme of things. The Desire is what bought them into the open (at least in the UK anyway, despite a good marketing effort with the Hero).
The sad reality of it all, is that HTC could cram a 2GHz dual-core CPU, 3D screen, 2GB RAM, 64GB high-speed flash and a 720p display, all running on Honeycomb into a phone the size of an HD Mini, and people would still go for the Apple phone because it's Apple.
If the original iPhone was released today - I still reckon it would outsell most other smartphones in the public sector.
I still chuckle to myself when the iPhone came out without MMS, and then Apple did something revolutionary and put MMS into a software update, and the world was alight with joy and praise!
Yet I'd had MMS on my SonyEricsson T68i a clear 6 years prior!
I had HD2...i sold it 2 month ago waiting for something like Desire HD...Now I'm waiting with my dummy in a pocket
Numbers are numbers. DHD is better in CPU,GPU,ROM,RAM,Camera,Video. OS is relative...depends who likes what. I prefer Android against WM 6.5... But, i would be almost perfect if they put SLCD and Aderno 220 in him...then there would be nothing better...but word "better" is relative...
I still have my HD2 (and HD) and considered porting it to Android but in the end I opted to keep it running WM and popped for the Galaxy S.
The Galaxy S is a great phone with some beautiful features but I do miss my HTC branded phone.
At the time I considered the Desire but needed something slightly bigger and with more features and seeing as the Evo didn't come to the UK, as said instead I chose the Samsung.
Now the Desire HD is coming I've been looking close as to what it may give me over the Galaxy S.
Apart from it's slightly larger screen I can't find anything that will draw me away and that worries me.
As said, I miss HTC Hardware and Sense. The new line of Sense looks better but is it enough.........
I am currently using a HD2, and well, after 10 months of usage, WM6.5 is practically crap: Many essential softwares which are needed were not preinstalled; even messaging application was crap... Internet browser was as slow, most importantly no flash... Then here comes the Android running on SD card... But still sucks big time, although the developers really put a lot of effort in it, but the lag, freezes, and incomplete applications are all making me feel more and more disappointed... Until the 15th of September 2010, when HTC revealed both DHD and Desire Z, my hope was relighted... A proper Android OS on a 4.3" screen... This is what I needed for long... The first thing I did was to preorder it immediately without even hesitating... From here I believe many can see how much hope i gave up on HD2... The disappointment was utter... Well, now I am just counting down everyday to my DHD reaching me... 20 more days to go~

i think the devices with dualcore that will be releasing in the next few monthes make me keep my hd2 for now , desire hd is not a big improvement to upgrade to it
Having neither the HD2 or the Desire HD and wanting a slice of the Android pie having whet my appetite with a Desire, what would you suggest?
I can get an HD2 for around £220 - £250 from eBay and run with Android courtesy of the devs, or I can fork out £470 on a native Android handset that does not seem to offer a great deal (for my use at least) over the HD2.

Depends on how much you value some of the added benefits you can get with the dedicated Android.
I love my photography and although I have several cameras I still like to get the best out of whatever hardware is available.... That's one of the reasons I went for the Galaxy S over the Desire and now with the HD coming out.... well I'm still drawn to the Galaxy S.

Likewise but having been spoiled by Nokia I have reached the conclusion that anyone who is serious about using their phone for halfway decent shots when on the go should steer well clear of HTC!
Trouble is, the competition might have the hardware but the operating system is very dated. I want the bells and whistles Android has to offer but the hardware is lacking on this platform.
Android ported to HD2 will never be so smooth and good as Andoid on his original device. There will always be some little bugs and lags...and you'll never experience a true Android experiance... Better choose regular Desire than HD2 with Android... HD2 is made for WM

Agreed... That was one of the main reasons why I went for the Galaxy S over the Desire. The GS takes and shoots simply outstanding shots & video.
Maybe its just me but if you really want good pictures.....invest in a camera: s
The camera isn't fantastic but its decent and that's good enough the other features make up for it imo.

Hi All,
I'm from Malaysia, here we pretty much dont have contracts, thus we are free to buy our own unlocked mobiles, albeit at retail prices.
Anyway, i've been using the hero for a year now, and am thinking of upgrading. I have narrowed it down to either a Desire, Nexus One or Samsung I9000 Galaxy.
Both the Desire and Galaxy are officially available here, but the Nexus One isn't (i'd have to go for grey imports - thus warranty becomes a problem). Leaving the nexus out, im left with the desire and galaxy, both have almost the same price, but i've been browsing the galaxy forum and it seems there are lags (with lag fixes)? Hardware wise, the galaxy is more powerful (but is it that noticeable?), but what i want is a mobile with very active and broad range of rom development, the desire wins in this case over the galaxy.
Will it be worth it and wise to get a desire now, since the desire HD is going to be released soon? I for one find the HD's screen too big for me. What i want is a phone that i would be able to use for at least a year+, and one that has active rom development (which is why i choose the hero a year back).
I've been looking at the spec sheet and the HD has only certain advantages over the Desire, namely better GPU (adreno 205 vs 200 on the desire), fab process (45nm vs 65nm for the desire) which should translate to lower power consumption but the behemoth of a display on the HD would consume more power, a better camera (8mp vs 5mp - with such small sensors, whats the difference anyways?), and slightly extra ram. Oh, and of course the screen size difference.
That being said, i'd like to know from you desire owners is it worth upgrading to a desire from a hero now? And also, whats the battery life on the stock desire?

I've recently upgraded from Hero to Desire and i can assure you it definetely worth the money. IMO Hero's hardware is insufficient to support its software, making the phone lagging most of the times. Desire's 1ghz processor + extra RAM makes the phone work fluently - almost as an iphone. Also desire has a much better camera and a much better screen in matters of brightness and resolution. Body design is also better, phone is thinner and construction sturdier. The battery life isn't as good as on the Hero (lasts 3-4 days vs 1-2 days on the Desire).

Maybe i forgot to mention that i am not looking for a phone with physical qwerty keyboard. The reason behind this: It has a slider which has mechanical moving parts and is more prone to damage. I've had too many problems with flips/sliders right from the days of Motorola Startac, my last slider being a nokia n96, which flex cable gave away twice, so i kinda have a phobia towards anything but candybars .
I also want a 'best bang for buck' device, and both the desire/galaxy s are in that category. I could only imagine the retail price of the desire hd and z when they are launched here.

Have you tried any of the roms which undervolts the proc? To be honest, the price of an iphone 4 isnt that too far away, just slightly higher than the desire here, but then again, i just cant explain why, but i cant see myself using an iphone ever. i practically hate it..

I am not suggesting that the iphone is an overall better phone... it's just that motion and scrolling are better as it uses a dedicated GPU. If i was to buy a phone i would again go for the Desire. It also costs almost half the price of the iphone.

Hey dont get me wrong there! i was just voicing out my opinion on an iphone. Guess we're on the same page there.
Nothing desperately wrong with the iPhone. I own both and they are both fantastic. Why dont you try the desire, galaxy s and desire HD in store and see which one you like best?

Well I can try out the galaxy s n desire in store, but not the desire hd as it's still not out.. well, even I admit the iPhone can be good, it just isn't my cup of tea

my hero is just as fast as my desire. just a easy to see in bright sunlight if not better, battery lasts longer and built much better, the only thing it cant do as well as my desire is play games .......
Hi mate, well i didn't have a hero so i can't help you out, but i had a sony xperia x10 instead and i can safely tell you the Desire is worth every penny more. Once you calibrate the battery the desire is really awesome!
So here's the deal. I have my Desire for a long time. I got successfully cured from ORD But I still do touch it quite a lot
So my desire:
8gig class 4 sd card(I really need a bigger one, plus it's slow)
1ghz, sometimes undervolted, rarely overclocked
GPU+ drivers(I always check that the rom and kernel have them)
Oxygen HBOOT table
PlayerPro(used to have PowerAMP, until the trial expired )
Redux rom
AMOLED version(of course)
And out of my phobia that I still have a good phone I just _need_ to compare it to others. So here's a list, sorted by date... how I remember it:
Nokia N8 - nothing to say. But it performed surprisingly better then the 3GS in some parts
LG Optimus 2X Stock - Won, won everywhere but tegra games
SE x10 1.6 lazy fatass didn't update... and uses MY, MY gmail account! SO lazy! - I won so badly good, so, badly, good. Even though I thought 1.6 would beat me because it's well, 1.6, but I won, won good =)
Dell Streak 2.2 edited - oh man was that close! But in the end my skilled hands won again Plus he had that stupid ADW.Launcher(seriously guys, now I'll be rude, it's f***ing slow, just admit already, even the Regina 3D, 3D launcher is faster and actually battery saving!)
HTC Desire HD Stock - won, won, won, won, won
HTC HD7 Stock - surprisingly shocking fast! It surely beats the LG which was surprisingly... awfully slow, BUT it failed everywhere else (I expected that)

I've tried out other phones in the shop of course. But stock and presentation thingies? I mean I won, like always, but stock plus presentational? No really can't compare. But I won for all HTC including WP7 devices. Though would like to see galaxy s II and htc sensation.

Honestly, with the right tweaking it way seem like your phone is the fastest there is, but in real life, if you tweak evidently better phones, they will fly WAY faster than yours.
The problem is that you're comparing optimized stock against weighed down manufacturer UIs.
And desire has the longest development threads , no other phone has such development .

Yep, development is actually a good (biggest imo) point in keeping this phone. I won't feel like it's old until my favorite devs will move to something else
I love my Desire. I love it so badly I can't quite explain it. Since the beginning the only complaints I have had is I think it's a pitty not to have a 4 inch screen (that would make this thing 99% perfect in my opinion) and also no decent video player with features like screen lock to avoid acidental pressing etc...
All in all it's a wonderful device. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's better than the iPhone 4. I'll addmit it's a great device and software and ROMs keep it fresh, but the overalll responsiveness of the Desire vs the iPhone 4.... I'd have to tip my hat to Apple, albeit by just "that" much.
I read the term GPU+ on this thread for the first time today. Would anyone elaborate on what it is and why it's better?
Also I guess Redux has this GPU+ in it. Can anyone tell me if MIUI also has this or any way to implement it into the already working ROM?
Well comparing the Desire to an iPhone is just unfair...that device has better hardware, hands down...if you wanna be fair you have to compare it to a SGS (which has the exact same cpu/gpu). Anyway, personally i'd still pick the Desire right now, if i had to choose between that and the iPhone, the main reason being that i couldn't live without the freedom that android grants me now...i'd only move to a better android phone, nothing else.

Lol @ wife comment. No, seriously, I wouldn't say no to an iPhone, but given the choice I'd go with Android. Apple just gives you that "just works" kind of feeling that I love. But my Desire also gives me a "98% just works" feeling plus the liberty to do what I damn well please with my expensive hardware and software. Also I found it shoking someone saying that the Optimus 2x is slower than our Desires. I had one in my hands for over an hour and I swear to God that thing is fast, fast, fast! Can't wait to see what 2012 holds for us. I plan on trading my Desire in 2012.
Optimus x2 is faster for sure, anyway looks like (at least that's what i heard) many of the current apps aren't really optimized for new dualcores: most of the time only a single core is used, unless the app is very demanding, so at least for now it's hard to feel that huge boost in everyday use...i guess it's like it used to be with some older games on the first dualcore pcs, where you had to force the program to use more cores via driver, because it was made with singlecore architecture in mind...but obviously it's just a matter of time before we get our butts kicked way harder by new gen phones

The HTC Desire has been a pretty great phone for me, love the physical buttons, and the rooting scene is very very much alive.
Just wondering, will there be a phone that have the same size as the desire, but with updated internals like a dual core processor and more ram? Seems to be trend for bigger screens and any dual core phone is usually 4" and up.
What do you think?

The new samsung is so light you don't even notice the screen size difference in your pocket. Personally I would like to stick with HTC but if you were looking to buy a new phone right now nothing comes close to the samsung in terms of sexiness/thinness and lightness!

I think the HTC Sensation ist the model you are looking for.
Same formfactor as Desire and Dualcore and so on.

Thats the thing really, I’m not looking for a phone right now, I can wait for another year or so. But I have always had my eye out for new phones. My 1st smartphone was the 1st gen metal iPhone, I used that since 2007 till my job required me to have a phone without a camera. I got the Desire mainly because I wanted an iPhone-like OS and that I could easily remove the camera module without damaging the rest of the phone. But I’ve fallen in love with the android OS and the amazing variety of phones there are in the market.
HTC as a company is great. I think they’re moving in the right direction. Just that their new phones have locked bootloaders and well, the rooting community is what I really love about the android platform.

I want a phone that's quad core, 32GB internal mem, 1GB RAM...

I want it smaller and thinner than the Desire, and have a battery that lasts a week with heavy use
Seriously, guys - it's not gonna happen. You want more features, the phone will get bigger and have crap battery life. Just enjoy what we have as this is a golden age for mobile phones
Sensation will be my next step.
The unibody is awesome and the specs are too.
I stick to HTC cause I just love their hardware and quality.

I think it's worth waiting till Q4 to change for me, love my Desire and am very keen to have physical buttons(not keyboard) on my next handset but unfortunately it looks like the top handsets will no longer have them.
I'm with the OP on this one. I love my desire, still do, but am keeping my eye out for the next desire-like phone. I suppose the htc desire s is the next logical step, but from what I've been reading, it's not that drastic of a jump and therefore not worth the upgrade. I would have to say htc dropped the ball on this one. The desire s will not reach the same popularity s it's predecessor simply because it doesn't bring enough improvements to the table. While the sensation seems to be the next flagship, the large size, insufficient ram and internal storage are deal breakers for me.

Sensation seems to be the logical next step, though gaining root access and S-OFF is a bit of a problem at the moment. Last summer when I bought my Desire, I knew I would not have to change my phone until dual cores kicked in. Well, they came a bit early I'll probably keep my Desire for a year or two more before I move on to dual cores.
I do keep hearing that dual-core processors and Sense 3.0 are not optimized, but that won't be much of a problem once the device is fully rooted and ROMs start cooking. Think of how innocent the stock Desire feels, if you ever for some reason turn back to it. We have a monster now. So, it's all up to devs to figure out a way to root Sensation. After, it's golden.

I know its v picky, but why has HTC switched to shiny buttons for power and volume? They look so tacky. One thing I love about the Desire - it looks muted/classy, not shiny shiny.
On the S Nexus S, I was surprised how little I noticed the increased screen size, v different to the Desire HD which feels massive (there's only a .3 difference, isn't there?)

I hate those physical buttons. They were OK when I bought the phone a year ago. Now I have to press twice or press them really hard to make them work... But I don't like the touch buttons on my gf's Wildfire S as well so I'm kinda stuck...

For months I've been trying to upgrade. (At&t straight talk etc.) I was going to buy an old my touch 4g slide put it on straight talk but right now its hard to find. So the HTC one v is it worth it (cdma version) would I enjoy it more the I enjoyed my ov? Do you think more roms will be made? Tough decision seeing as I work at lil ceazers not making much lol. So big question is it a good phone?

I know there's some awesome devs like jmz working in the CDMA side, but until htc releases the source it'll be slow going.
I came to the OneV from an optimus v, and i love this phone way more. Even if you look at just the hardware, it's a big step up (or at least it feels like it).
If you're planning on doing straight talk, that's GSM not CDMA. Only the virgin mobile OneV is CDMA.
Would you say its worth the upgrade then?

I was waiting for the price to go down, but I bit the bullet based on 3 things:
1. the screen! one look at the fonts and I was in love!
2. ICE CREAM SANDWICH!
3. The development! In a span of 3 months this community/devs have done a wonderful job in showcasing the future of this phone!
I don't want to come off as too negative about this phone, as it is very beautiful and I would probably buy it again. So just be aware that this post is mostly focusing on the negatives.
While single core 1ghz isn't the fastest around, it is fast enough for an android phone. In fact I noticed no significant speed difference to my 1,5ghz dualcore Sensation. And HTC even released a 600mhz phone this year, the desire C. In my experience the utility of more CPU power in android phones maxes out at around 1 ghz. More CPU power and screen real estate just means lower battery life. And the battery life on this thing is pretty much the best you're going to find in the ICS camp. With many of the big-and-fast alternatives, if you're actually using it you're not going to take that many steps away from the charger.
That being said, at the moment I'm slightly pissed off about some aspects of this phone. That's mostly because it feels like a repackaged 2010 phone. It is very pretty with the aluminum unibody and all, compared to this even new high end devices look cheap and plasticy. But you have to like the design, because it's not the most cost-effective hardware. There are a few year-old android phones around with the same hardware, that you can get used for like 100 bucks less, and most of them come with a full list of polished ICS custom roms. With the One V you pay extra for the design and for getting ICS out of the box. And that's not even of much use if you're capable of installing a custom rom.
I bit the bullet because I was running out of other options that fit my preferences. I wanted a three-button setup, and less than 4", and pretty much all alternatives in that camp seem to have some crippling flaw, like crappy battery life or nonexistent GPS capabilities or a really mirrory screen. So far I haven't noticed any flaws on the V, except for the inexplicable button and usb-plug placement, and that the front speaker is really quiet. But most importantly, since it's a new phone, and a non-high-end device, custom rom availability is only just starting to build up. For example there is still no way to get real status bar toggles, which my first smartphone from 2009 with Cyanogen 6 could do.
In the end it comes down to whether you like the design, or whether you care about raw specs more. I'm just not as interested in counting cpu cores, so it's fine for me. Don't get me wrong, it runs perfectly smooth. But it is just 400mhz up from a Legend.
If you like the nose and the aluminum unibody, and prefer a not-too-huge phone, then go for it. But if you are looking for the most price-effective hardware, then buy something used with the same capabilities. You just have to be aware that you pay extra for the fancy design here.

I choose One V becouse of this comunity and development going on around ICS at the moment, and "S advance" is stuck on 2.3.6. without much hacks to choose.
I was wrong anyway. ICS look great but it lag on this phone like hell. Anyone buying should realy try it first. I mean my girlfriend's crappy LG optimus L3 is a ferrari compared to this. And it gets worse...HTC specification is a LIE. True specs are 2gb ROM/ 1gb user available, cca 365 mb RAM ?!?
Camera looks more like 3MP. with 5Mp mode you get only bigger sized pictures and vid's but cannot capture more detail...like upscaled 3mp camera.
ONE V specs look like leftovers from desire series with a new outer shell. If I've got 2nd chance to choose a phone I'd rather go for a used Desire series and wait for a price drop on good ICS phones simply becouse desire is snappier and One V is slooow.

It's android 4.03 under that sense ui. Find someone who has older android phone 2.3.x,even a bad one, and compare. It's true that you only feel that lag in multitasking and browsing...like pinch to zoom etc...but also scroll between screens is a big delay

For me cm9, nonsense rom and even suprimo 4.1 made it respond faster but still not even comparable to 2.3.x devices
the HTC One V is a HORRIBLE PHONE! You will NOT be able to hear anyone you talk to, mine has been like this since new and all sound lvls are maxed...im forced to use the crappy loud speaker....i will never suggest a HTC phone to anyone since im locked into a 3 year with this crappy phone..
i guess it all comes from what phone you come from and your budget. i came from a huawei ascend (junk) i love this phone! My wife had a huawei ascend 2 (junk) and i got her on of these and she loves it. I am rooted and running a custom rom, she is rooted and running stock with no bloat. i am sure there are many phones out there that are better than this one, but for our carrier and budget, we can't beat it!
