Hey guys,
So this is my second question post after asking for proper guidelines on how to root. It was hard at first but after trying it it was pretty easy. I've looked at other threads like this but ROMS constantly changes and update and many new one's are released (what I am observing).
I'm really lost on terminology, what does AOKP or AOSP mean?
Is there one which is the "fastest" or most "fluid?"
What's the difference between some of the popular ones?
Am I alone for thinking that TouchWiz is more beautiful than CM10?
Any recommendations? (I'd prefer one with GWallet enabled, Rooting, etc...)
Which one has best extended features or customizability?
Thanks again! The android community is great!
EDIT: Where can I buy the cheapest/modern looking NFC tags? I found these are there any other smaller ones or anything else I should take a look at before buying?
http://tagsfordroid.com/tags/Home.html
I can help with terminology - look at the top of the "General" section for a sticky called "XDA and Android Terms and Acronyms". That should help you get started.
As for what's best, it's pretty much a matter of just trying out different ones to see what works best for you.

no you are not alone...it really is a matter of preference and style
Quick synopsis:
In simple terms, there are stock Samsung based roms, which will have Touchwiz as launcher or one available from the market in addition, and there are ROMs developed striaght from Google sources without the Samsung layer or interface (e.g. Touchwiz) -- those are CM10, AOSP and AOKP -- all multi-platform, open source muti-developer community interactive projects, with many avid adherents.
Some of it is look and style, other times people prefer the google based systems as they are "pure" -- more significantly, they tend to have continuous and ongoing development.-- so there are official JB roms with a CM10 or AOSP, AOKP base -- except the source is official , the development is all the open source community.(confused yet?).
In the Samsung ROM department there are basically those that are based on stock releases (latest being the ICS 4,04 firmware) and those based on initial or leaked firmware yet to be officially released (latest being JB 4.1.1). IN general terms, if you are comfortable flashing and being an early adopter (think some errors and problem solving) then leaked firmware ROMs are fun. If you are new and/or unsure about messing with settings, stick with an officially released firmware ROM.
And, if you don't like Touchwiz and/or just appreciate the putiy and spirit of the community, go CM10 AOSP or AOKP.
Good news, is there are many good developers and many helpful people throughout.
One good hint: always ask questions first and then flash -- rather than making a mistake and then asking someone to help you recover. ALso, read the thread for the ROM you choose -- most questions have been raised and solved by the regulars on any thread.
Hey man that was very helpful! Do you know how I can better transition into CM10? I tried backing up all my data and apps using TBP but my widgets, folders, and settings didn't transfer over. Os there a way to get EVERYTHING to transfer over?

To recover your widgets, if you were using a 3rd party launcher (such as Nova, Apex, etc), you could restore the data only for that launcher with TB. If not, you will have to start from scratch, as the Touchwiz launcher does not exist in CM10. You can also restore data for settings, but this is usually not desirable as it could conflict and cause instability. I use SMS+ Backup to backup my SMS messages when I switch ROMs, TB to back up app data for installed apps (not system stuff) and Nova launcher. In Nova launcher, if you remember to use it, you can back up the launcher data and screens (widgets, folders, etc). You can then restore from the Nova Launcher when you install a new ROM. This is probably more stable then restoring via TB, but I have not had any issues restoring that from TB in the past.
My rule of thumb with TB is to never restore apps, only data. So I'll re-install my apps from the Play store and then restore the data for those apps from TB.
Hope this helps.

I think its time for me to pick a ROM. Which ROM delivers the closest stock experience but still being highly customizable?
By closest stock experience I mean smooth UI and stable OS. I read aokp is good but are there different versions, where do I find them etc etc.
I've tried to do as much reading as possible but when I go into the development section of the forum I just see a bunch of numbers and words that don't make sense to me lol
Which rom is the best in terms of what I want?
I use Codename Android, but that's just my preference. I'm using Franco's kernel. I'm also just waiting for milestone four of aokp.

You probably want to go with the normal AOKP (I find the difference to the other ROMs to be minimal, matter of taste I suppose. I stick with AOKP since it's the first one I used, runs great and gets a lof of support), the differnece to the other AOKPs is minimal, mostly optics.
As for which build, if you want to be 100 certain that it's run smooth and without any problems, go Milestone 3.
I would go Build 24 though since it is stable and offers more functions. There is a chance you migth run into a problem or two but nothing big (I'm on 24 as well)
You can get it here:

If you want as close to stock as possible then give this a shot. It's the v4.0.4 that leaked a few weeks ago. Both the wife and I have been using it since then. It's stable, battery life is decent and it's not cluttered with crap.

Wow guys, thanks so much for the help.
I decided to go with aokp b24. I have a few questions.
-I am using aokp b24 with nova launcher. I know b25 is coming out soon, and I also like the black exodus theme by nitro as well. I've done HEAVY customization with nova launcher and my widgets such as simple text and minimalistic text that I don't think I;d have the patience through sitting again. So my question is do I have to do a full wipe/factory reset if I upgrade roms?
-I've seen peoples lock screens that have quick apps instead of the stock unlock an camera, they have phone + sms etc etc. With this rom I can select 2 apps, I set them as sms and phone but only the sms one shows up. Any idea?

1.) Apparently roman said you don't need to do a wipe going from 24 to 25, but there is a chance of bugs/things not working properly if you don't wipe. You can save your preferences under Nova Settings --> Backup. And then you can restore once you redownload Nova. Also, you can save your minimalistic text settings under "Backup" as well. That way you can just restore your settings with a simple click. (The restore files will be saved to your SD card, which don't get wiped if you erase data).
2.) Are you sure you selected the "quad" lock screen setting under "Lock screen style"? If so, try to mess around with the "octo" setting and the custom app locations (i.e. 1, 2, etc.).
Also, this thread should be under Q&A. =]
Thanks so much for your reply. A mod can move this thread if it is in the wrong spot, sorry didn't know better.
I just installed aokp b25 and loving it.

Custom ofcourse. Now liquid linaro 1.5rc2, tomorrow maybe something else.
Custom of course.

Custom!!!
Stock is good. But once you try the custom ROM... you don't want ever go back to stock. Really. You will miss so many handy stuff in stock ROM which is pretty standard in all custom ROMs. For instance:
- Long press back button kills the app.
- Or toggles in notification area
etc.
Currently:
Slim ICS ROM.
CM9 is OK. But it's not Slim ICS
AOKP is very similar to Slim (almost the same). But not as stable and slim as Slim ICS
So.. Slim ICS is the only option for me. All the other ROMs.. well.. good luck with all the other
Idk even why Google make stock so slow and I hated the gradient effect. Google should hire these custom rom devs. They really have skills and talents. After using custom I can't go to that slow, laggy stock rom....

It's funny that all the comments so far say custom roms, yet the poll result says otherwise. My guess is that people using stock rom have absolutely no problem with it and feel no need to "brag" about how good/stable their rom is
Edit: Yes, I voted stock rom.
Im always rooted and ROMed within the hour of getting my phone. So custom.

Right now running custom (CM9) but would have no issue's with just using Stock rooted. Google does a good job putting out stable code that works well. I just like having a couple extra features that CM9 adds.
A kernel is a must though, although stock ROM is good the kernel they push out is obviously not very well optimized.
My Gnex and my Xoom are both bone stock, unrooted, locked bootloaders, the whole nine yards. I know how to root, I know how to flash custom ROMs, and once I learned, my curiosity was satisfied. The custom stuff just has way too many tweaks, customizations, etc. The motto of AOSP and kernel developers alike seems to be to include everything and the kitchen sink. That may work for some, but not for me. I don't want to have to think about it all.
I buy my devices to use them productively day in and day out, rather than to **** around with them constantly haha! Having root access doesn't give me any abilities that I need to achieve that purpose, nor do custom ROMs and kernels give me anything the stock ROM doesn't give me for achieving that purpose.
In the end, the stock ROM is fast, stable, clean, and doesn't include all the extras that I don't need, want, or want to think about. Some have asked me "Well then if you don't mess with them at all or don't develop with them, why do you even buy Google experience devices?" The answer to that question is simple...I want the plain vanilla stock Android experience and the latest Android versions. My interest goes no further than that.
I subscribe to the design and UI philosophy of "less is more", and within that parameter, the stock Android experience delivers in spades. It gives me everything I need and nothing I don't.

This has been my school of thought with the Galaxy Nexus, as well. I did unlock the bootloader straight away, just in case I wanted to try custom ROMs and go back to stock. I haven't had that itch yet though.
I'm not in anyway knocking custom ROMs (I've happily used them on every previous device), I do feel though they are the "scenic route" for this particular phone.
Ran stock + root for the first few months until curiosity got the better of me and I installed CM9 a few days ago. Mostly all good so far apart from a problem with Google Music stuttering occasionally (accompanied by a nice screeching sound ) for no apparent reason.
Thinking of trying Slim ICS next, or I might stick with CM9 depending on how much the stuttering problem annoys me.
I use the stock ROM. I personally don't use many of the customization in other ROMs. And for aesthetics, I don't need UI customizations -- I don't really care how the UI looks. (I was fine with Froyo's UI )
Root is required for me, as I use apps that need it (such as Quick Boot, which allows you to reboot your device without turning it off and back on again, and Market Enabler, which allows us non-Americans access U.S.-only apps).
As for the bootloader, I firmly believe in unlocking (I unlocked it even before booting Android for the first time), as for me, the benefits out-weigh the negative: I like being able to recovery files (e.g., pictures before they got synced to the cloud) on my device in case it crashes and can't boot, and I like being able to back up my setup so that in case anything happens, I can always go back to it -- both of which can not easily be done if your bootloader is locked. There are many more benefits as well.
Stock ROMs are slow and sometimes unresponsive. That is inevitable even for the Galaxy Nexus.
Custom ROMs are far more tweaked and optimized. Custom ROMs, though, are not necessarily better, since what's best is user-defined. We all have our needs and as long as we're satisfied with what we have, we do just fine.

Quick boot? That sounds like an app that only reboots/reloads the system and not the kernel, correct? (i.e. full boot) What market enabler app works perfectly for ICS?

Using Black Ice... started with LiquidSmooth and really liked it (love having profiles so that I can set a "Night" mode in which only my phone will ring and everything else is customized to either just vibrate or just notify by the LED). I then went to AOKP and tried Gummy briefly but neither had profiles. Found Black Ice which is a modified AOKP and havent looked back since. Aside from the nice White on Black scheme it has profiles and has the option for the weather in the notification page.

As most users on XDA, I've got a rooted device that I want to use a custom ROM on, and there are so many choices it makes choosing a ROM very difficult.
And it is all a matter of preference, depending what included features (included Gapps, default launcher, notification options, etc) or what base it is built from (CM10, AOSP, AOKP, etc) everyone has their own preference.
I created this public spreadsheet, but I thought it may be useful for others, and allow others to possibly to keep track of what features are included out-of-the-box on different custom ROMs. It has really taken off since I originally created it.
http://goo.gl/U8a0E
Hopefully this can help others like me who want to quickly know what features they will or won't have with different custom ROMs.
I considered trying to do a forum post on this, but obviously I would have to keep up with updates myself on Post #1 like most stickied reference posts, that's why I thought a public Google Spreadsheet would be more helpful as anyone can update it.
Overall, a lot of this will probably be moot once a stable CM10 is released, but we never really know how long that can take. And we all know there will still be customizations made to it, one I can think of specifically is Paranoid Android.
Thanks everyone who makes updates to the sheet. I would also like to throw out a HUGE thank you to the custom ROM makers giving us stable ROMs that meet our individual needs.
And, as the Google Doc can be viewed by ANYONE, must get permission on google account to edit.
My personal "Must Haves":
- T9 Dialer (avoid having to install separate dialer app)
- Customizable Notification drop down for Additional Toggles (this has replaced the need for Widgetsoid2 since I can have the Flashlight and Wifi AP here.)
- Reboot and Reboot to Recovery in Power Menu (Mostly Reboot as a minimum as I sometimes forget to turn it back on if I Poweroff)
- Battery Percentage in Status Bar (The logo itself is no where near specific enough for my needs, and I now prefer the circle style)
NOVEMBER 24, 2012 UPDATE: Personally I've switched over to Paranoid Android 2.99.3 (beta 3), it doesn't have my personal must haves yet, but I'm sure it will, currently I'd rather have 4.2 and lose a few features, than be running 4.1.2, it is one of the first roms with customizations to be released on AOSP 4.2, so until it is 3.x it could have some bugs.

Also I noticed that paranoid, like you said ( the only ROM that I am using as a daily driver ) is not on this list.
You really should try his alpha 1.9.1 with included kernel. Well now all kernels work on this ROM. But I think that gnex is the beast already and doesnt need any Custom kernels.
Hey I like Franco kernel and I purchased his app and I am playing a lot with it, but as long as I need decent battery life I will use stock kernel. On that ROM I had only 2% of battery dropped in amazing 6 night hours. I just couldnt believe my eyes.

Thanks, I assume you added Soft and Chewy.
I'm downloading the newest CM10 and JellyBro to load onto my Nexus quick, hopefully I will get those two filled in completely, then at least I will know where my baseline is for my own personal comparison.
A few people have messed it up a bit and I'm sure some changes got lost, but if I don't leave it wide open, I know a lot of people won't make changes.
So, after all of that, and the spreadsheet getting updated by users pretty nicely, it looks like there is a functional enough CM10 (from the +Google page) v1.8 that is stable enough for me to start using as a daily driver for at least a few days.
I'll be using Gapps-b as I need Picasa sync to be working.

You could leave the public version as is, but add a "revised" version (editable only by you) that weeds out any egregious and obvious inaccuracies.
Oops misread.
I started one of these back in the day for the droid Eris. You should be able to leave it public, you can always see and revert changes.

So, overall, I definitely accomplished what I wanted to do with the Google Doc, everyone has been awesome with their updates to it.
But, for myself, the Doc is basically useless as soon as I found CM10 v1.8 on the +Google page, which is basically a very stable nightly (although it isn't), it is exactly what I wanted....
It's very stable, gives me all the features I have as my "Bare Minimum"
- Toggles in notification screen
- Battery Percentage in Status bar
- Reboot options in shutdown menu
I ended up in the exact same state after trying numerous custom roms on my HTC Desire and Motorola Atrix previously, always just ending up with CyanogenMod7.
And I happened to just fall onto the +Google post with v1.8 while compiling the Google Doc. Was about to download 1.3 then 1.8 was posted and I'm LOVING it.
And as long as I stick to CM10, I shouldn't have to wipe my data, I'm tired of doing all my Titanium Restores (as I don't have the paid version).
Again, thanks everyone for updating the Google Doc, and as I've made it public, anyone should be able to update it and keep it updated for other people out there that want to use custom roms. And if anyone ever needs to revert anything that really breaks it, all you have to do is log in with your google account.
I really hope it helps some people find the ROM they want to use for their specific needs. And it would be nice to see more of these for different devices, especially for devices not officially supported by CyanogenMod. I may have to get one started for my Motorola Atrix 4G.

Speaking of that, does anyone know what document viewer the stock Nexus uses, and if there is an Play App, or APK I can install on CM10 that is the same.
I have Documents to Go, but I'm wondering what the Stock nexus one is.
I've added this to the spreadsheet as CM10 not having one, so if we know which app the Stock has I can put that on the spreadsheet.
Thanks.

AOSP is the code that gets pushed out directly from google and CM bases its work on this. Companies like Samsung and HTC build upon this code to create their own modifications which can vary greatly in apperance and features. Wicked is based on the Samsung firmware. This means you get many of the galaxy s3's exclusive features such as motion controls, smart stay etc. The apps are also themed to make the whole OS feel more integrated. The contact app, music app, dialer etc all share a certain consistency that, IMO is more polished.
CM on the other hand, brings a whole bunch of modifications and features that give you more control over your device. I cant really go through them here but if you do decide to go with CM, I advise you to spend a good 30-60 minutes going through each menu in the settings to get a good idea of whats available. Also, being based of AOSP, CM removes a lot of the bloatware that comes with the S3 giving you a less cluttered OS.
My recommendation: Do a backup of your current Wicked Rom in your recovery. I also recommend getting Titanium Backup to backup your apps and data. There's a free version available but the Pro version has much more extensive features namely that it can restore all your apps without you having to confirm each app. Both AOSP Roms and Samsung Roms I feel target different audiences so its up to you to decide which one best appeals to your usage
I came from sonic rom, and have been following the nightlies for bout 2 weeks. Obviously the biggest difference is jelly bean vs ICS.
Which when it comes down to it, isn't that big of a difference lol.
differences worthy of note for me:
1. Google now (which i guess is included in wicked too)
2. smoother faster
3. CM 10 does have a screen flicker rarely, but lately it seems to be all but gone.
4. quick sms reply in the notification (great!)
5. two finger swype down on emails and sms in notification to show more info
6. unlock screen much better than origional, choose apps to include in the lock screen
7. wifi hot spot actually works
8. browser seems better
9. volume rocker to skip songs while screen is off (love it)
10. sweet loving support of the CM staff (priceless)
11. raw google goodness

nicky is right, but NOT having all of samsungs proprietary features that come in touchwiz is in my opinion a huge plus.
smartstay, svoice, motion controls, and PIP are all very much meant for the tmobile storeroom, its a "hey look at what this does..." where as you continue to use you notice smartstay works about half the time, the motion controls are mostly unessary (when did the android phone turn into a wii remote, whats with all this moving lol), and the svoice is abhorent.
Google made their fortune off of software and apps, samsung has hardware down great.
But i'm typing this one of their laptops, same thing applies. The hardware and internals are great, but their little apps they add to windows were retarded and i did a clean reformat.
samsung device + pure google software = a wonderous thing
Thanks for the advice guys.
One more question- once I flash CM10M1, can I update to future CM ROMs without having to do a wipe?

Firstly, don't flash M1. Flash the newest one. Second, you can update without wiping, yes.

What do you mean by wipe. Everyone has there degree of "cleanliness", But I just wiped calvin wiped cash before every cm 10 nightly update. HOWEVER, if your going to cm for the first time or leaving cm, definately do a factory reset. Some guys do a factory reset every time, i found it was alright without it.
im looking to flash a new rom and i want to thoroughly reserach it before flashing. Does anyone know where I can find FAQs and list of issues to the following roms?
Such as something like AOKP has

Though I couldnt find a summary or a list of report bugs
[ROM][PA:AOKP] ParanoidKANGdroid 1.40 (11/21) The Most Customizable ROM on Earth!
I couldnt find any Q&A for this ROM, but PA had it......
[ROM][OFFICIAL] CyanogenMod 10 Nightly Builds for SGH-I747
Q&A: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786563
I couldnt find list of bugs for CM10, speciifcally for stable or Milestones.
If there is a link to what I'm asking for above that will be great. If not, i'll continue reading through the threads.
I'm looking at CM10 and I've been reading lots of issues even at stable......sometimes it makes me think
1) Why do people flash custom roms?
2) is it worth getting a new menu but in exchange your camera, bt, or whatever might not work. Or worse yet, something that you need but only discover that it doesnt work when you use it on the spot?
understand that some of these roms have bugs to be worked out due to the fact that they're still very new. also, many users experience bugs/glitches, etc on stable roms because they dont follow the developers installation instructions. take the time to read up on these roms and you'll be able to conclude that many bugs are the result of user error. a solid rom by a great developer (installed properly) can make your S3 the best phone you've ever had. what are you running at the moment?

running Paranoid Android.
It's fairly stable, I haven't ran into too many problems yet.
I did notice it was a bit laggier than my stock ICS after my ICS was supercharged with V6.
its also a bit laggier on games.
It delivers a few customizations i like, like calls only log, custom boot animation, customizable quick launch, face unlock that is fickle.....but i just cant see as of right now why I would change? I lose the ability to make folders on trebuchet (yes....i know Nova Prime), I lose hand swipe screen capture, i lose smart stay (yes there are apps for it). I almost wnat to say battery is a bit worse than stock, during idle its about the same.
You also lose s planner which i found a replacement apps. It just seems like a lot of work restoring sms, tibu, changing all settings to your liking, reinstalling launcher and load settings, loading contact information etc etc for the ability to add toggles, sliding background......
I'm cool for the aesthetics, but i wonder is there any practical improvements, as in performance, speed, signal, battery life.... i think i would enjoy that rom better..........would going to AOKP be the one for me?
I enjoy AOKP, but I could care less about many of the touchwiz features that many people look for/enjoy. I love the performance and reliability of AOKP as well as the ability to tweak/customize. Download Super Backup for your sms/apps, etc, make a nandroid and give something else a shot if you'd like. I've been using AOKP's 4.1.2 release since late last year and I'm not switching any time soon. I've downloaded and flashed the Nexus 4 camera (on xda forum) and have exactly the S3 I want

Yea i figured i'd jump to AOKP next since PA has CM10 integrated within it already.
I've also tried Ariel (ICS rom), not only did it lack customizability, it wasnt stable. it felt like a less stable version of stock..... i was highly disappointed in my first custom rom. Its not that i like TW necessarily, but the way that everything is set up, its pretty smooth for me and the battery is good too.
I want to try out AOKP or PK before making a decision though.
