[Q] How do I Update? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I posted this thread a few days ago and surprisingly nobody was helpful at all.
I am rooted and with stock rom LG8
I am NOT familiar with all the jargon of you root gurus
1. Can you please tell me where there is an updated list of updates?
2. Can you please give me step by step instructions on how to update?
3. Is there a full working english version of Jellybean anywhere?
Thanks

Im sorry, maybe im just flat fukkin stupid or something, but that didn't help me.
I rooted so I could have free wifi tether.
1. I dont know what a stock recovery is.
2. I dont even know what a rom is.
3. I dont know what a build is.
I just want to UPDATE MY DANG PHONE!

Well unless you can/want to learn about what your phone is and what it can do. I suggest you follow this step by step.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypmqJbZqOaU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
It'll unroot you, you will lose your free WiFi tether. But you will be able to take all the updates you want. Then pay $30/month or whatever it is and get Sprint tether.
You should only root if you know how what's what with the tech world around your phone. Or have the willingness to read and understand all the information within threads that you want to learn from.

Also that video is how to unbrick your phone from being soft bricked. Which you will probably end up doing if you continue to try stuff without understanding it fully.

If you are rooted but stock LG8 and you want to update to LI3 and maintain root you can do this by following the steps here.
It is a pretty simple process but you need to know how to flash an update in the Clockworkmod recovery. If you are rooted then you likely already have a custom recovery (like clockworkmod or twrp). Just download the referenced files, copy to your internal sdcard, boot to recovery, make a nardroid backup (optional but recommended), flash the update, flash the TeamEpic file and then reboot.
It does not get much simpler than that. If you can't handle this then you should really save yourself some trouble and unroot and take the update normally.

I followed the video, and Im updated to LI3. What was getting me was that I couldnt find a video or instructions for the current update. Nor could I find a single source for latest updates.. I was getting confused with the different roms out there and such..
Im an expert at modding xboxes and nintendo Wiis, but I couldnt find a noob friendly source for explaining what anything is.
Anyways, thanks for the help

Return to Stock Yakjudv

Right, from the top, I'm a retard and shouldn't have messed with ROM's and custom recovery whilst blindly following a guide (I cant remember which guide, so mistake #1). I have a Telstra (Australian) Galaxy Nexus. I followed a guide to put CWM, Jelly Bean and root on, however I ran into a few problems and wanted to revert to my stock ROM, well I never performed a backup of my original ROM (mistake #2). I went looking and someone posted a Telstra stock ROM in CWM backup form here on xda, I successfully restored it and am *mostly* happy with the results, however no I cannot recieve OTA updates, which seems to be due to the prop file and others assert failing. Basically, I've learnt my lesson and want to be a good boy and go back to a non-root, completely out of the box state so if in the future, I need to return the phone for warranty, I can without fear of recourse for messing with the phone.
So again, I'm a tard, but can you help me?
EDIT: Mistake #3, I went back through my downloads and found the files I used from the guide I cant find to show you, but it DID involve Busybox which I have since read screws **** up.

As I understand it, you should just be able to re-apply a stock GSM ROM to your Galaxy Nexus to get back to the original state of things. That's the whole point of a Nexus - it's stock with no customisations etc. It sounds like you'll have start from the very beginning and reinstall apps etc. but I guess you've already bitten that bullet, and presumably you're happy with your current ROM configuration?
It's not clear what recovery you have installed at the moment. You've made mention of CWM ... Clockwork Mod recovery possibly installed in that case? Again, as I understand it, Clockwork Mod recovery means you can't <s>receive</s> apply OTA updates. If you're on a stock ROM you should still receive notification about them though? If you are truly on stock, but have the Clockwork Mod recovery installed you can reinstall the stock boot recovery image. You should be able to find the stock images via a google search easily enough.
Once you've determined which recovery you currently have installed you'll have a better idea of how to get back to stock everything.
Above all, don't panic
PS I could add that busybox doesn't screw stuff up ... it just allows you to screw things up
Hi there,
the most simple way to go back to stock is using the GNex-Toolkit (to be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310) downloading the stock image here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images. Almost no chance to mess up your phone with this tool.

yeah and if tried the tool, you would have seen, that there is an option to flash stock recovery to your phone. you can also disable the bootloader again.

I few things:
1) If you can find a backup of a yakjudv ROM from some Australian user, I'd be happy to help you restore it; but
2) You do realize that yakjudv is still on 4.0.4 (ICS) and not Jelly Bean, right? And you do realize that it only recently (past few weeks) got updated to 4.0.4 while yakju has been on 4.0.4 since March?
3) You do realize that yakju is stock, and the factory images provided by Google are the "stock" ones that get updated first. yakjudv is a Samsung build, not a stock Google build.
LOL, Telstra

DO NOT GET YAKJUDV!!! Try and just get Yakju, Then you will get your updates from Google NOT Telstra. You don't need the Telstra stock rom, you can use Google's Yakju. I have a Telstra one and I get updates from google because I put Yakju. You will need to flash the ROM though your pc. I have been through what you have with the exact phone (Telstra one), If you need any help you can PM me
I agree with the post from Atifsh.
The guide offered by Efrant gives you, step by step, everything you need to reach your goal.
Contrary to your case I did not need to change the factory ROM but I applied the rest of the guide (for instance post 855 in Efrant thread shows what I did).
Since I want to learn I refuse, so far, to rely on a toolkit.
I deeply share Efrant philosophy of learning. And I agree on the purpose of the XDA forum. It is not a walking clinic, it is a hospital implementing new medecines:laugh:.
Finally, taking into account my age I am closer to the hospital than to the clinic.
Thanks to Efrant and few others I am doing "stuff" I did not know I could do.
And, yes I am over the time I used to want and get everything at once.

I understand all the benefits of yakju, however I want to revert to yakjudv if for any reason in the future I require warranty (the phone is under contract).
I do in fact have a 4.0.1 Nandroid backup from another user on Telstra, I went ahead and restored it through CWM and everything was fine, except I still cannot receive OTA updates, doing some reading finds I need to get rid of CWM and revert to stock recovery, so how do I do this?

As you say, the problem is you need the stock recovery for the build that you are on. What build is the backup you restored? If it is ITL41F, then you are in luck. Go to this thread and download any one of the two yakjudv updates to /sdcard. Use CWM to flash it, and you will be all set -- it will wipe CWM and replace it with the correct stock recovery for that build.
---------- Post added at 08:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:48 PM ----------
And please change the title of this thread to "Return to stock yakjudv" as it is very confusing. Most people refer to stock as yakju or takju for GSM devices.

Can you please post the back up on here please via drop box or something, I need the same thing so I can return for a warranty issue however everywhere I look I just find silly people trying to inform me that I should use Google builds and no Samsung/Telstra build. I know all this however my phone is now on life support and everything seems to be going wrong so I just want to return to out of the box and return it.

I love it when people ignore the question in the OP and just decide to tell others to flash different firmware. This isnt helpful in any way when trying to return your device to Telstra in Australia as that's not what come with it so they will just give you your faulty POS back and laugh in your face because you are no longer covered by the warranty.

Have you tried returning a device with yakju and have Telstra give you back your "faulty POS" back? Have you heard of others who have experienced that? On the contrary, I have heard of many people returning their non-yakju-bought device with yakju, and have had full warranty.
And if you would have searched before lipping off, you would have found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29898676&postcount=175

I have tried that link bro and it wont flash in CWM. I just get a red triangle with a robot on it. A mate of mine tried to take his back due to a similar problem im having and he was told he had played with the device and wouldn't fix it under warranty and wanted to charge him something stupid to fix it. I'm not giving ya lip but I have been looking for the last 6 hours and in every thread about this subject everyone is saying the same thing.

[Q] Root for 4.1.1 jelly bean?

NEED HELP ROOTING! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
So i have the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 (SPH-L710.14) and i want to root it. But! There is no root that i have so far for 4.1.1 jelly bean. Every root i have tried has not been accepted by the phone and so im still stock.
Please help!! CWM Super user 3.0.7 doesnt work for me with rooting. Clock work recovery, nothing. No root. (Checked with root checker.) I want to root! please help me?
The process to root Jelly Bean is the same as it was for ICS. I used the Team Epic Root From Recovery method and it is super easy.
Make sure that you do the battery pull and boot into recovery after flashing CWM from Odin so that you can flash the Team Epic root file.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Lol
For others: you can also try this if you don't want to trip your flash counter. It worked for me.

I got an S3 a while back (sprint sph-l710) and I tried to root it and I had troubles so I am a bit sensitive to try it again.
I've read the first post and a couple of the last but didn't want to read all 11 pages...can someone let me know what is the most reliable method to root a phone using android 4.1.1 and without tripping the flash counter? I want to have the root access to make changes I want but I'd like to modify it as little as possible to get there.
I've also read one post that suggests to wipe phone first. I didn't understand what this would do. Is it necessary?
Last, is there any type of backup I can do before starting the root process so that I can revert JIC I have troubles again?
Thanks.

That will give a custom recovery too. They want root with little changes elsewhere. Didn't see you didnt want to trip the counter(although its easily reset). To root without tripping go here no wipe needed and wont change recovery. To unroot just flash the unrooted version in the same place

Thanks everyone, I ended up using this method since resetting the counter is easy. Was done in ~20 seconds. Will any root keeper do?
Now will the root access allow me to use a sprint hot spot or turn off that annoying camera sound? Or would I need to go to the next step with my phone and installing software?

There was a thread floating around somewhere about how to remove the camera sound, I believe it involved simply renaming the .ogg file
As for the hotspot, check out Wifi Tether for root users, its in the Play Store and you can also get it from their google code page. This app does not warn your carrier that you are tethering, I've used it on multiple devices including the Evo shift 4G and Evo 4G on Sprint

The native sprint hotspot hasn't been hacked yet but you can add a shutter sound toggle to the camera by changing a line in the feature.xml file located in system/csc

The shutter sound option is cooked into many roms if you plan on going down that path. Also check out the morphology thread in the themes and apps section for a lot of options.

[Q] Rooted & unlocked... is it time for a custom rom? Questions inside.

XDA Members,
I am pretty new to the world of Smartphones. My first Android was a T-Mobile G2 and I have recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S-III (also through T-Mobile). One of the initial things I did was update it to Android 4.1.1 via a T-Mobile OTA update. I then rooted the device using this method and it worked like a absolute charm. Today I discovered a Sim Unlock thread here on XDA and couldn't resist following the instructions as I like to have absolute control over the technology I purchase.
My next step would be a Custom ROM like Cyanogen I reckon. However I have some questions and will decide based off of your answers here if it actually a step I want to take. I have concerns about functionality, the benefits, and drawbacks. Hopefully your answers here will be enough to calm my nerves on this as I feel it'd be a very big step. So without further delay here are my preliminary questions:
1) How polished in Cynagen for the Samsung Galaxy S3? Are there a lot of bugs, errors, and the like? Is it running Android 4.1.1, Android 4.1.2, or Android 4.2.1?
2) If I switch over to the Cynoagen ROM in place of the stock firmware currently on my GS3 will I notice a performance increase or decrease in terms of speed, memory consumption, and related variables?
3) What functionality and/or features are missing from Cyanogen in comparison to the stock firmware? Specifically let's talk about camera functionality. The camera functionality in the stock firmware is pretty solid. Can I expect the same level of functionality from Cynaogen? If no then what is missing and/or different?
4) I do not have an SDCARD yet. If I move to Cyanogen can I swap back to the stock Samsung/T-Mobile variant of Android 4.1.1 easily and without too much difficulty?
5) What are the benefits and drawbacks to using Cyanogen over the stock ROM? Can you please enlighten me as to why using an aftermarket ROM is so popular?
This is just a series of preliminary questions. I inquired on the official Cyanogen community forums but getting responses is proving to be more difficult than I originally anticipated. I am hoping to have significantly better luck on these forums.

Could you be a little more specific and in-depth with your answers?
I'm really on the fence about rooting right now, i want to because i want to play all the games with an xbox or ps3 controller, also i only have the 16 gb and didn't realise there isn't apps to sd so 'd like to do the trick to get my sd card to read as internal memory but i have a hard time with the fact that you lose warranty when i have replaced many phones in the past from t-mobile. The technical side scares me in the possibilty of bricking my phone. What was your thought process on that? The warranty thing really scares me like i said because i have literally replaced about a dozen phones through customer care.

Follow the guide I linked in my original post about rooting your T-Mobile Galaxy S3. It's VERY SIMPLE to do using that method. Watch the included YouTube video and then follow the guide carefully. Trust me it's totally worth it. You won't brick your phone if you follow that guide I linked. It's just so easy to do.

If you're too scared to root or flash any roms than just stay on stock. If you follow all the instructions correctly then you got nothing to worry about. I've rooted everyone's phone in my household(we all have different ones) out of boredom lol but I followed the instructions and had 0 issues. Yes you lose your warranty if you root or install a custom rom but it's very easy to revert back to stock in case you need to for warranty purposes.
And for the guy asking about CM10 just try it out and see if you like it or head to the CM10 thread and read up on it. You'll lose most of the touchwiz features but there are some other roms based off touchwiz

What is a Nandroid Backup? Could you offer me a link? Sorry I am really new to this. Rooting and unlocking is the furthest I've ever gone before. Baby steps here. I'd like to know the potential of me possibly being satisfied before making this leap. Lol.

It's a backup of your entire phone that you can restore anytime. If you flash cm and don't like it, you can restore to whatever you had before without losing any of your data. It'll be exactly the way it was before you flashed cm.
here's a link I found on google: http://www.vikitech.com/10347/perform-nandroid-backup-restore-android-device

Can I do this without an SDCARD? And... how do I get Clockwork again to do such a backup? I thought it may still be there after I rooted but its not?

Download ROM Manager from the playstore and it should flash clockwork for you just follow the instructions they provide and yes it should save it to the phones internal memory if you don't have an external sd card

Okay awesome. Once I do that I obviously transfer the backup to my PC for safe keeping. What Cyanogen should I install? Latest Stable or nightly? Like I said I am a total noob to this.

You might encounter a few more bugs if you flash a nightly so I would probably go with stable just to test it out

first make sure you back up your imei. A few people have lost theirs when flashing roms and not just the T-mobile variants all the SIII's have had this problem. Check out this thread on how to do that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29461950

It's like your phone's serial #. If your phone gets stolen or something your service provider can block it from being used on their network thanks to the imei. Unfortunately it can get reset to 0 due to some minor bug that the SIII's have. If it gets set to 0 you wont be able to connect to tmobile's network. Luckily if that happens you can fix it by following the instructions on that thread. It's happened to me once and I was able to restore it without any issues.

Pretty rare I guess. It happens randomly so it's always safe to have your imei backed up in case it ever does happen. I've flashed several roms including cyanogenmod without any issues and I've only lost it once randomly but I was able to restore it without any problems

US Cellular GS3 (SCH-R530U) 4.1.2 Rooting??

Hey everyone,
I have rooted my GS3 prior to US Cellular's update to android 4.1.2, but after the update, every rooting method I have tried has failed. I almost bricked my phone the other day attempting to use a toolkit.... It tripped teh flash counter apparently and my device status was "Modified" instead of normal. I downloaded the Samsung update tool for the USCC GS3, and did a manual update after i discovered that my prior rooting attempt tripped the flash counter, disabled my Wifi, and caused me to be unable to download an OTA update.
The question is this...... what rooting method shoudl I be using for the USCC Galaxy S3, running 4.1.2? I'd love to be able to block ads again....... and I'd like to stay with the base OS if possible (not flashing it atm)'
Thanks in advance!

Using that method should would, oldest method and always proves true. Like always, you're responsible for everything.
Tripping the flash counter doesn't matter... I have never had USC reject warranty service, and I don't use any counter reset tools.
Unfortunately, XDA isn't the best place to find support for USC phones... Do a Google search for TeamUSCellular and go there for detailed step by step guides.
Then, look carefully at some of the ROMs here on XDA... Several of the ones that use Aroma support multiple carriers.

Root build 4.1.2?
Newb here,
Has anyone had any success in rooting the US Cellular SCH-R530 with build 4.1.2? I donated to the Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit cause but after an auto update the most recent build listed for US Cellular is still 4.1.1.
Thanks!

No I didn't 'ready' it but I did read it and that post was from a week ago. So I am following up as a lot can happen in 1 week. Either way, TeamUSCellular does not have anything on it at all. But thanks for all your help. I am now regretting the fact that I donated to the development of the toolkit. I guess if this isn't a good place to find help on US Cellular phones then there shouldn't be any US Cellular phones in the toolkit, but yet there is....hmmmm.

I think you need to look a little closer.
Go to Forum, go to the SG3 Development forum, go to SG3 Guides & Tutorials, then the 5th topic down is what you want (How To Root Jelly Bean LK5 & MB1).
It takes you step by step and even provides links to the files you need.
I just used this last week on a friend phone and it worked fine.

Why bother upgrading the bootloader?

I've asked this question in a couple different threads and have not received an answer yet so I figured I'd just make my own thread here. Please feel free to correct any misinformation in the following:
It's my understanding that all 4.3 and 4.4 roms work fine with the older md5 bootloader, with some of the TW 4.3 roms you need the ATT kernel but other than that no problems.
If you have the older md5 bootloader you can still use triangle away and flash a stock rom and put your phone back to uncustomized status if you need to send it in for warranty repair, but with the newest 4.3 bootloader that is impossible to do because of the knox security?
This I know for a fact because it is what works best for my phone right now, the older bootloader and the newest radio can be used together. I am on an aokp-based 4.3 rom and the newest radio definitely works better for me than the md5 radio.
Once you flash the newest 4.3 bootloader that's it, you're stuck unless you want to risk bricking your phone. I know I just read a thread explaining how to go back but it's a fairly involved process with lots of steps and no guarantee of working.
So with all that said, my question is "what is the point of updating to the newest bootloader?" Seems like it has a lot of negatives and no positives.
Nope. None to my knowledge. I wouldn't do it.
It may be possible that Samsung may come out and say that future updates depends on you going to the new bootloader. But that's speculation on my part.
You have some good info in there, maybe others can read it... And not bring up why they don't have wifi on 4.3.
