Hey everyone,
I have rooted my GS3 prior to US Cellular's update to android 4.1.2, but after the update, every rooting method I have tried has failed. I almost bricked my phone the other day attempting to use a toolkit.... It tripped teh flash counter apparently and my device status was "Modified" instead of normal. I downloaded the Samsung update tool for the USCC GS3, and did a manual update after i discovered that my prior rooting attempt tripped the flash counter, disabled my Wifi, and caused me to be unable to download an OTA update.
The question is this...... what rooting method shoudl I be using for the USCC Galaxy S3, running 4.1.2? I'd love to be able to block ads again....... and I'd like to stay with the base OS if possible (not flashing it atm)'
Thanks in advance!

Using that method should would, oldest method and always proves true. Like always, you're responsible for everything.
Tripping the flash counter doesn't matter... I have never had USC reject warranty service, and I don't use any counter reset tools.
Unfortunately, XDA isn't the best place to find support for USC phones... Do a Google search for TeamUSCellular and go there for detailed step by step guides.
Then, look carefully at some of the ROMs here on XDA... Several of the ones that use Aroma support multiple carriers.

Root build 4.1.2?
Newb here,
Has anyone had any success in rooting the US Cellular SCH-R530 with build 4.1.2? I donated to the Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit cause but after an auto update the most recent build listed for US Cellular is still 4.1.1.
Thanks!

No I didn't 'ready' it but I did read it and that post was from a week ago. So I am following up as a lot can happen in 1 week. Either way, TeamUSCellular does not have anything on it at all. But thanks for all your help. I am now regretting the fact that I donated to the development of the toolkit. I guess if this isn't a good place to find help on US Cellular phones then there shouldn't be any US Cellular phones in the toolkit, but yet there is....hmmmm.

I think you need to look a little closer.
Go to Forum, go to the SG3 Development forum, go to SG3 Guides & Tutorials, then the 5th topic down is what you want (How To Root Jelly Bean LK5 & MB1).
It takes you step by step and even provides links to the files you need.
I just used this last week on a friend phone and it worked fine.

Really wish people would read how to return to stock at the same time they read how to custom ROM their device.
Don't know why you'd ever get so deep into customizing your phone not at all knowing how to go back...

This is why I think my rant should be a sticky.
EDIT: It probably wouldn't matter. Nobody reads stickies anyway.
thanks for all ur replies guys, i managed to do it in the end, i used wugfresh toolkit.
honestly im used to romming and rooting and stuff, with my desire hd, sensation, galaxy s2 so im not an exact newbie.
but this was just at a whole new level looool, i read that this is one of the easiest devices to root and whatnot but it was honestly just mind baffling to get it back to stock.
ive finally gone back to 4.0.1 just like i had out the box but im not recieving the ota to 4.0.2 which i was previously on before i rooted and stuff???
do i just wait??? will it ever show up??? if so how long roughly??
i did manually go to 4.0.4 yesterday but my download speeds were just rubbish, like this morning i used speed test from market and i clocked up 5kbps download speed???
was wondering if anyone in the uk had done the same? and how there device was running after??

are you serious... I've done a G1, N1, some LTE tablet, Wildfire, Sensation and GS2. The nexus phones are the easiest to lock, unlock, stock-ify and what not. sure you might need somme adb codes and fastboot codes, but they're really simple if you put some heart into it. After my sensation and Gal Nex, I've told myself to never get any other phone other than a nexus.

Just manually flash 4.0.2 if that's the version you want. There's images on the official Google website for stock versions of 4.0.1, 4.0.2, and if on GSM, 4.0.4.

Hi, i have an unlocked Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1 that has not received the android 4.2 OTA update. This is because my system is yakjuxw.
So i found a site explaining on how to switch to yakju or takju without loosing any data, apps etc:
http://andwise.net/?p=569
My questions are:
. Has anyone tried this?
. What are the cons?
. Does it void my phone's warranty?
Sorry if this has been asked or is posted somewhere else but i just cant seem to find it.
cheers!
Bruno
It's completely fine. In fact there is a thread specifically about the process that's been around for months.

clearly you didnt even bother to read the stickies. any of them.
AS a matter of fact i did, and found ways to flash a rom wiping all data from my phone, which is precisely what i don't want.
Now, i would thank those who actually came forward to answers to my questions instead of arguments that lead nowhere.
Thank you in advance.
The process in the first link is fine and works.
However to point out a few important things:
1) If your bootloader is locked you have to unlock it with: "fastboot unlock oem" and continuing with the instructions on the phone which will eventually delete all your data. (if you have flshed a ROM before you know that)
2) do install CWM recovery ( you can find instructions to do that everywhere and also on the same page you found for the 4.2) and do a Nandroid backup. This way you can go back to your original system anytime you want (I do this all the time)
3) keep also other backups of apps and contacts I find google cloud pretty handy for that.
4) The instructions mentioned on this site works but it might happen that some app or library or database is not happy with the update so the device will go in a boot loop. In this case delete dalvik-cache (it might help), but if it doesn't help you will need to delete the data or the part that causes the issue for this you might look into the logcat.
PS: Zepius, Pandas are not so cute actually ... so what's the best ROM / Kernel (stock it isn't

I used to think the same way as you and i also had the same yakjuxw but the updates come too late for those versions so i decided to go yakju and i have no problems now
My advice is that you do it, if you read carefully it becomes dead easy and its worth it

As written(linked) in the article this is just the software fingerprint I can assure you will not have issues as the main software is the same. The only thing changed is who is providing the updates. Imagine windows you get with dell and hp PC they both have their logos (yakju/xw) but the windows is the same s*itty windows
I used tohave yakjuxw, changed to yakju, takju back to xw.. not im on yakju. This is my job indeed to test apps on diff android versions and i flash time quite often every day and i can assure you all works fine
Anyway if you need a ROM that tells you it is xw let me know Ill upload one for you

hi all I'm trying to root my phone but there is so many different ways to tour. I would like the simplest way to root but I want it to do everything that all rooting software would do. I've come across one click options and would like to do those since I don't have to use my computer. Please help! Thanks
you are so going to get bashed in here for asking that question. The expectation is that everybody reads everything they can and then if they are hung up on something they can post a question. I am a relative noob although I have lurked on this site for a few years. I don't bash anybody though.
I understand your frustration.
I simply flashed a single .tar file to my phone while my phone was in download mode. I felt it was very simple using windows on my Mac. There is the very simple Exynos exploit file somewhere here where you download it and basically install it. I thought that this Exynos installation did something to the camera app.
Hopefully, somebody here will help you determine what is best for you. I really haven't tried many methods of root. I like to stick with one I am familiar with since a lot things might go wrong if not done right.
I am not sure what you mean by having the root method do everything that all rooting software would do. When you root you are just gaining access to portions of your phones files that are locked when you buy it. If you want more 'stuff' then you would flash a custom rom after rooting

Check out Chainfire's method for rooting. It's very simple, there is even a video instruction going step by step. It took me 5 minutes and I came from an Iphone. Head on over to the Original android development subforum, you'll see it there. Good luck!

I used the exynos abuse because I didn't need to use my computer to do it and it worked fine. But once I did the latest OTA update from AT&T, I lost root. So I did the Chainfire method. (See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980644 )
t's really easy and took about 5 min.

Just got my Note 2 about 3 weeks ago and haven't ventured into rooting it yet, BUT I did research here on XDA about rooting before doing it to my Galaxy S2 (AT&T) and the one thing I want to mention is to take your time are read to confirm whether or not the procedures you're looking at are for the Note 2 AND for the variant you have. Using the wrong process (rooting, kerneling, installing custom rom) can cause all sorts of problems, so don't be impatient if you don't know what you're doing. And by all means DO A COMPLETE BACKUP before you do any rooting.
That said, when I did root my S2, it was a very easy process...took all of about 15 minutes to backup, root, install custom rom, etc.
Good luck...and let us know how you do!

Welcome to the the dark side!!! Well the tripped flash counter is a Samsung can check to see how many times your flashed a non Samsung kernel on the phone using Odin or heimdall. Its important to have it at 0 if your sending your phone back to Samsung for repairs or if your exchanging for a new one with att.you can look up chainfire on xda. He has a app call triangle away which is can reset the flash counter.if you find his thread on xda he explains the flash counter a lot better. The only other important things I believe you should know is you can flash some T-Mobile galaxy s3 roms (search the thread to make sure tho), as you may know every phone is different so some kernels may work for you others may not and the root method is different from HTCs so read the stickes and theards or find a update to date video on how to root. Since you'll be getting the att model look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2042775 ape made an excellent tutorial for beginners when it comes to rooting the s3. it has pictures and he even package a root kit follow the instructions and you should be fine. Before trying make sure you have a good understanding of it first. I believe it even helps you install cwm. Once your Rooted if you want twrp just download its either goo. Im or too manager I don't remember from the android market and install twrp from there. Once again if you run into a problem search the thread first because more then likely someone had that same problem or you can message me and I will try my best to help you and guide you through it. Unlike your HTC you have to try really hard to brick a Samsung phone...other than that make backups of your EFS, IMEI, and keep a nandroid of rooted stock ROM on hand and you are good to go. Like more Galaxy S phones its fairly fool proof and if something happens you can get out of it. Don't flash anything for the international version. I prefer TWRP for recovery because its user interface is a lot better but to each there own.

I dont know much about rooting

Stay in this part of the forum. Flashing anything from anywhere but here could cause you problems or a brick.
The thread you linked is imo the best choice for rooting. There are several options, but I like root66 best.
Start with the stickies (yes including forum rules), then search for any questions you still have. I can almost guarantee 90% of any questions you come up with has been covered before.
ALWAYS read the entire OP of anything you want to flash!
Just to get you started though, use the root66 UVDMD5 firmware to root.
This is not the international forum. You are in the right place.
In my signature, you will find just about everything you need to get going.
Good luck and welcome!

Now that you're rooted, make a backup with whatever recovery you installed(TWRP or CWM).
This will be your backup incase you flash something and your device becomes unstable.
