Really wish people would read how to return to stock at the same time they read how to custom ROM their device.
Don't know why you'd ever get so deep into customizing your phone not at all knowing how to go back...

This is why I think my rant should be a sticky.
EDIT: It probably wouldn't matter. Nobody reads stickies anyway.
thanks for all ur replies guys, i managed to do it in the end, i used wugfresh toolkit.
honestly im used to romming and rooting and stuff, with my desire hd, sensation, galaxy s2 so im not an exact newbie.
but this was just at a whole new level looool, i read that this is one of the easiest devices to root and whatnot but it was honestly just mind baffling to get it back to stock.
ive finally gone back to 4.0.1 just like i had out the box but im not recieving the ota to 4.0.2 which i was previously on before i rooted and stuff???
do i just wait??? will it ever show up??? if so how long roughly??
i did manually go to 4.0.4 yesterday but my download speeds were just rubbish, like this morning i used speed test from market and i clocked up 5kbps download speed???
was wondering if anyone in the uk had done the same? and how there device was running after??

flash a new radio and bootloader if you desire.

are you serious... I've done a G1, N1, some LTE tablet, Wildfire, Sensation and GS2. The nexus phones are the easiest to lock, unlock, stock-ify and what not. sure you might need somme adb codes and fastboot codes, but they're really simple if you put some heart into it. After my sensation and Gal Nex, I've told myself to never get any other phone other than a nexus.

Just manually flash 4.0.2 if that's the version you want. There's images on the official Google website for stock versions of 4.0.1, 4.0.2, and if on GSM, 4.0.4.

Hey everyone,
Im relatively confused about this phone since there are so many threads that are for the other versions(VZW/Sprint/Intnl).
What Im looking for is any help(direction?) as to what I should do first on my Nexus that I ordered from Google Play.
What is the first thing I should do(root or unlock bootloader?) and what should I download(Roms or kernals?). Any links to said advice would be much appreciated also.
Many thanks in advance.

Thank you for the obvious and the laugh. However, I really am looking to get past the two weeks of thread reading, and get guidance from those who have this Google Play version with working roms and stuff.
unlock the bootloader, you can decide to root or flash whatever later. unlocking the bootloader does a factory reset which is why you want to do it before you do any setup or add anything to the phone

Ok, now I saw this, and I might sound newbish here, but the title of that thread is for the VZA/Sprint/GSM versions of the phone. To my understanding, even the unlocked GSM version originally sold is not the same as the current one in the Google Play store.
If the link above will work for all the phones including mine then that is what I was looking for.

Lucky for you even if u unlock the boot loader after u sign in and sync all ur stuff your data won't be erased... something about the Takju version that allows users to unlock boot loader without wiping any data =P

It will work. Yours is still GSM, yakju, takju, yakjuux, whatever. Its still GSM.
first thing you should is jump up and down, and pat yourself on the back for being tied to your carrier for a phone upgrade
I would unlock the bootloader before anything else...
Then if you're feeling brave (and before you start configuring the device to your liking) flash a third-party ROM based on 4.0.3/4 (The most recent ICS versions):
l'd recommended Cyanogenmod 9 nightlies if you like to be on the bleeding edge (Although you might have to get used to flashing EVERY day, which isn't so bad once you get used to it)
Or, moving to something like LiquidSmooth (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555667)
or
EaglesBlood ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1388728).
Each of which will bring different things to the table, you'll have to do your research as to which one you'd like if you go that way.
Alternatively, just stay on stock ROM and enjoy your phone the way they intended you to...
^ Thank you for that. I was actually confused as to what order Im supposed to do things(root, unlock bootloader...Rom...Kernal??)
Ive seen a lot of positive reviews for an AOKP rom and a Frances(?) Kernal. Anyone agree they make a good match?

You unlock the bootloader first because it wipes your phone, SD card as well.
Flash clockwork mod recovery.
Flash a custom rom and kernel.
Sorted.
The guide I wrote (previously linked) details how you can also back up your applications (not that you'll really have any to begin with...but if you decide to wait) without root.
Then unlock and restore...and backup again with titanium for all future restorations.

Hi everyone,
I must apologise for adding to the large number of threads on subjects such as this, but having trawled through forums (Both here and elsewhere), I'm struggling a bit to know which guide to use.
I'm currently using a Galaxy Nexus which is running stock Android 4.0.1 yakjudv (Telstra GSM). I'm wanting to change my phone to a stock Google rom, as I currently don't get any OTA updates. I would be happy with 4.0.4, or JB. The problem I have is, having looked through all the guides, I don't know exactly what I need to do to achieve what I'm looking for. I'm trying to do the minimum to get the result, and don't need to remain rooted/unlocked after I upgrade.
As I'm quite afraid of doing something wrong, I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of the best guide to use. I've looked at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614827
and
http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/429778/how_update_your_galaxy_nexus_jelly_bean/
and have downloaded the rom from:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images (Yakju)
I would appreciate any guidance.
Thank you so much, and once again my apologies for posting yet another question. I do promise that I have tried to find the information on my own for a number of hours. I may simply be inept at searching!
Download the galaxy nexus toolkit then backup your data then install the drivers then download the factory image 4.0.4 then use the galaxy nexus toolkit to unlock the bootloader then put the galaxy nexus image file in c:\galaxynexustoolkit\google image goes here then use the galaxy nexus toolkit to install the 4.0.4 galaxy nexus image the use the galaxy nexus toolkit to root the device and to keep root use OTA root keeper from google play store then install ota jelly bean update there you go that how you install the google image on your telstra galaxy nexus and I use a galaxy nexus on Telstra

No, don't use a toolkit.
OP, follow this guide. Extremely easy and it doesn't matter what your current build is, you'll be flashing to 4.0.4 "takju" and quickly receive the 4.1.1. OTA update. You'll be stock and update by Google from here on out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895

Thank you both for the replies. If I follow the guide to flash to 4.0.4 "Takju", will this cause any difficulties in using the phone here in Australia? But then when something goes wrong (it usually does with new users and toolkits), you have absolutely no idea what's happened and no way to fix it. Just spend the few minutes to learn a manual guide and understand what you're doing. You'll thank yourself when you can diagnose problems.

It'll work just fine. I've not heard anything specific about Australian users having issues being on stock Google firmware (no reason why they would). The only issue I could see is the radio not providing the best results. You can always flash back to an AUS-specific radio, although this then prevents you from auto-installing OTA's, which was your goal in the first place...

I've just tried following the guide and was going to backup my phone first, but CWM tells me 'Can't mount backup path". Does this mean there is something wrong that I should know about before I try the full process?
Sorry to double post - I thought I should just check - Last night I installed drivers using Wug's toolkit, and when I fastboot devices, I get a serial number. It also let me view the device both in normal and recovery mode.
I assumed that meant that I didn't need to reinstall the drivers. Is that correct?
Thanks so much!
Paul
I've been looking for info about Sprints latest stock ROM but according to most of the info I've found I should still be on JRN84D but I'm on JRO03U. Since the update I lost my root but the boot loader is still unlocked. I've also lost Touchwiz but sounds like I need to go the CWM route anyhow.
Most of the stuff I find on here seems to be referencing Toroplus so I don't want to start adding a recovery that is incompatable or bricking it trying to root with the wrong files. I've also read many times that using the VZW files is a big no no but they are the only ones supporting my build. So any links or info where I can find the info I need would be greatly appreciated. Whats a boy to do?
This is the info you should have with latest rom

You lost touchwiz? This isn't a mainstream galaxy phone....
Sent From My Toro+ via White Tapatalk
^^ Yea no Galaxy Nexus variants come with Touchwiz at all. I vaguely remember reading about an effort to bring it over but if I remember correctly it was pretty buggy. So unless you're running that specific custom ROM (and you would definitely know if you were), you never had Touchwiz on this phone.
Definitely don't download any Verizon ROMs or radios. That could brick you. You want "toroplus" builds. That's the sprint variant.
Maybe it wasn't touchwiz. Trying to remember but it was an alternate recovery to CWM that utilized the touchscreen. At any rate I'm back to the stock recovery that is completely useless giving me a droid with a red danger triangle above it.
gagb1967, that is exactly what my build version is. Thats why I'm hesitant to use any of the toroplus files because I know its a mysid build. I've been spending way too much time with my desktop and overclocking because I've forgotten most things about how to mess with my phone. Then again this GNex really doesn't need NEARLY as much alterations as the old Charge and Touch Pro 2 did LOL.

Hi, i have an unlocked Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1 that has not received the android 4.2 OTA update. This is because my system is yakjuxw.
So i found a site explaining on how to switch to yakju or takju without loosing any data, apps etc:
http://andwise.net/?p=569
My questions are:
. Has anyone tried this?
. What are the cons?
. Does it void my phone's warranty?
Sorry if this has been asked or is posted somewhere else but i just cant seem to find it.
cheers!

clearly you didnt even bother to read the stickies. any of them.
AS a matter of fact i did, and found ways to flash a rom wiping all data from my phone, which is precisely what i don't want.
Now, i would thank those who actually came forward to answers to my questions instead of arguments that lead nowhere.
Thank you in advance.
The process in the first link is fine and works.
However to point out a few important things:
1) If your bootloader is locked you have to unlock it with: "fastboot unlock oem" and continuing with the instructions on the phone which will eventually delete all your data. (if you have flshed a ROM before you know that)
2) do install CWM recovery ( you can find instructions to do that everywhere and also on the same page you found for the 4.2) and do a Nandroid backup. This way you can go back to your original system anytime you want (I do this all the time)
3) keep also other backups of apps and contacts I find google cloud pretty handy for that.
4) The instructions mentioned on this site works but it might happen that some app or library or database is not happy with the update so the device will go in a boot loop. In this case delete dalvik-cache (it might help), but if it doesn't help you will need to delete the data or the part that causes the issue for this you might look into the logcat.
PS: Zepius, Pandas are not so cute actually ... so what's the best ROM / Kernel (stock it isn't

As written(linked) in the article this is just the software fingerprint I can assure you will not have issues as the main software is the same. The only thing changed is who is providing the updates. Imagine windows you get with dell and hp PC they both have their logos (yakju/xw) but the windows is the same s*itty windows
I used tohave yakjuxw, changed to yakju, takju back to xw.. not im on yakju. This is my job indeed to test apps on diff android versions and i flash time quite often every day and i can assure you all works fine

Hey everyone,
I have rooted my GS3 prior to US Cellular's update to android 4.1.2, but after the update, every rooting method I have tried has failed. I almost bricked my phone the other day attempting to use a toolkit.... It tripped teh flash counter apparently and my device status was "Modified" instead of normal. I downloaded the Samsung update tool for the USCC GS3, and did a manual update after i discovered that my prior rooting attempt tripped the flash counter, disabled my Wifi, and caused me to be unable to download an OTA update.
The question is this...... what rooting method shoudl I be using for the USCC Galaxy S3, running 4.1.2? I'd love to be able to block ads again....... and I'd like to stay with the base OS if possible (not flashing it atm)'
Thanks in advance!

Using that method should would, oldest method and always proves true. Like always, you're responsible for everything.
Tripping the flash counter doesn't matter... I have never had USC reject warranty service, and I don't use any counter reset tools.
Unfortunately, XDA isn't the best place to find support for USC phones... Do a Google search for TeamUSCellular and go there for detailed step by step guides.
Then, look carefully at some of the ROMs here on XDA... Several of the ones that use Aroma support multiple carriers.

Thanks!

No I didn't 'ready' it but I did read it and that post was from a week ago. So I am following up as a lot can happen in 1 week. Either way, TeamUSCellular does not have anything on it at all. But thanks for all your help. I am now regretting the fact that I donated to the development of the toolkit. I guess if this isn't a good place to find help on US Cellular phones then there shouldn't be any US Cellular phones in the toolkit, but yet there is....hmmmm.

I guess if this isn't a good place to find help on US Cellular phones then there shouldn't be any US Cellular phones in the toolkit, but yet there is....hmmmm.

I think you need to look a little closer.
Go to Forum, go to the SG3 Development forum, go to SG3 Guides & Tutorials, then the 5th topic down is what you want (How To Root Jelly Bean LK5 & MB1).
It takes you step by step and even provides links to the files you need.
I just used this last week on a friend phone and it worked fine.
