[Q] How to root my Galaxy Nexus but still get OTA updates from Google?

Excuse my complete noobishness, but can someone help me root my Galaxy Nexus but still get OTA updates from Google? I found multiple sources from here and a video from QBKing77 but nothing answer my question completely. I would be really grateful if someone with experience could help me by give me step by step instructions.

Rooting your phone does not disable OTA updates.

Why would you want ota if you rooted? Just flash a rooted version of the updated rom when it's released.

I want to root just for two or three apps that require root access and still get updates from Google. I want the process: root -> get OTA update -> root again etc...

That's what I do. I don't flash ROMS, just use a few apps that require root. Install OTA Root Keeper from the play store to retain root. Run the app before installing any updates to preserve root. Then when you receive an OTA, install the update then run OTA Root keeper again to get your root back. Worked for me on Verizon Galaxy Nexus coming from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1.

That is what I'm looking for! Can you explain to me step by step how did you did that? It would be great if you help me.

Use the guide in my sig or stickied at the top of this forum.
Only change would be fastboot boot recovery cwm.img rather than flash.

Just root the phone, and don't flash any custom recovery, then download supercurio's OTA root keeper app from the playstore, to backup your root then enable root with the same app after you receive OTA

Why not?
The toolkit is SUPER easy.
Open the tool kit and the DOS window guides you through what to do, by typing numbers or letters to get the desired option. I can post the guide on when to boot in recovery mode and what the phone will do but as for the Toolkit, it's self helping. Just install it, run it and follow the on-screen instructions.
I do exactly the same as what you want successfully; I have a completely stock Nexus, but it's rooted for the use of some apps. The OTA update tells me when there is an update, I install then simply root again. I'd rather not have an app to keep root as that will be yet another app to clog up my phone's app drawer.
A lot of the custom roms aren't to my taste so I am happy to keep the stock experience
Will post again the steps when I am on my home PC.

simply because the toolkit is an excuse not to learn the FUNDAMENTALS of owning a nexus device.
what happens when something goes wrong? do you know what the toolkit is doing behind the scenes? most of the toolkit users DONT. there are more than enough 'HALP!1!1 I BriKt mah PhoneZ!1!!oneone' to prove this is the case....
if you understand what its actually doing, you understand how useless it truly is...

Well, for starters the "fundamentals of owning a nexus device" don't include rooting at all. I know many people who use Nexus devices un-rooted and are fine.
Plus, I'm more than happy not learning too much about it as I'd rather spend my time eating cake.
Remember, not everyone here is in to tweaking settings, trying different radios, resetting their phone every 5 mins to test yet another ROM.
Some people are more than happy with the stock experience but just want root. The toolkit makes that simple.
Secondly, if the toolkit was doing things behind the scenes, I'm sure someone would have found that out and reported by now.
Thirdly, how do you know custom ROMs aren't doing the same thing? They are far more likely to be able to phone home without the owner knowing.
Fourthly, I personally tried rooting the manual way but the one line help of "just type this" I got never really worked with my phone.
Fifth, I've used the toolkit on my own phone and my partners many times, I've seen nothing bad, no bricking.
Don't see why you're so against something which makes life a lot easier for people who aren't too sure how to root the manual way?

Actually, I do. I understand why XDA exists but I also understand the multi-uses it really has.
Not everyone who comes here has a desire to mess with their phones all the time...
If you're not a fan of the toolkit, why not flame the developer?
Here's a short guide on what the OP wanted to do.
1) Make sure phone is up to date. Make a note of your software version - probably 4.1.2 or 4.2 and build number (mine is JZO54K)
2) Turn on USB Debugging (Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging)
3) Shut down the phone
4) Start in Bootloader (power button + vol up + vol down)
5) Run the Galaxy Nexus toolkit
This is where we use the toolkit. Read the info and select your build number. The windows will guide you through what options you have. If you want to root only, choose that option. Go through the menus and type YES to begin.
6) Phone will restart
7) After ~160 seconds, ToolKit will restart to Bootloader
8) Phone will restart
9) Toolkit will finish rooting by pushing the files to the phone.
10) Phone will restart back to Bootloader
11) Finish - Confirm in ToolKit

So does the person that thought I was saying the toolkit did something malicious... I never said any such thing.
Toolkits are pointless. It takes longer to learn the toolkit than it does the three commands needed to unlock and root a nexus. That's my ****ing point, yet this guy is going on about how easy the toolkit is to use. If it's so ****ing easy, why did you have to provide screenshots and instructions?

i cannot believe that someone would actually think its NOT beneficial to understand the process, and rely solely on a toolkit...its amazing to think that there are people so wrapped up in their own little minds, that they refuse to take the time to learn to do things the right way and understand what they are doing to their device.
what happens when joe user, who only knows the toolkit, flashes a mod on his phone that was NOT intended for his phone/build/rom version, and he bootloops? he jumps on xda and posts a thread. HALP I JACKED MAH PHONE!!! how do i fix it with the toolkit?
please, for the love of tech, LEARN what it is you are doing. do us all a favor and help spread the KNOWLEDGE and stop with the damn toolkit. this website is designed for you to learn, not follow a damn prompt/menu to get instant gratification.

Don't use a toolkit. Learn commands yourself and you won't have to worry about what a toolkit is or isn't installing.

root toolkits are fine, if you already know what you are doing. the problem with root toolkits arises when a person that has no idea what they are doing uses them and messes something up, which happens often, just read all the threads that users start asking for help, that include the words "i used a root toolkit". you dont see any these thread with the words i used fastboot or adb. usually what happens is something simple gets messed up, then the situation becomes worse because the user didnt know/learn the basics, and messed something up after. this is the problem with root toolkits, they go around you having to learn the basics. then we get all these threads about "help, i bricked my device". just taking the little time needed to learn the basics prevent this from happening.
this is a nexus device, its meant to be able to root the device easily. this is the basic procedure.. fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash the su binaries or custom rom in your custom recovery, reboot. that is it. it takes me 3 minutes to do this. add on a little reading beforehand, and maybe itll take you 30 minutes. much better than getting lost after using the root toolkit, or even messing up your device messing with stuff that you shouldnt. and, occasionally, the root toolkit itself can mess things up.
btw, op, you can always install an official "ota" manually, without receiving it ota, and without having root too. also, if you flash a rooted stock rom(unmodified, only root), youll still receive otas

You can unlock and root without install a custom recovery. IF you don't install any custom recovery and leave the stock one you'll continue to receive the ota updates.

US Cellular GS3 (SCH-R530U) 4.1.2 Rooting??

Hey everyone,
I have rooted my GS3 prior to US Cellular's update to android 4.1.2, but after the update, every rooting method I have tried has failed. I almost bricked my phone the other day attempting to use a toolkit.... It tripped teh flash counter apparently and my device status was "Modified" instead of normal. I downloaded the Samsung update tool for the USCC GS3, and did a manual update after i discovered that my prior rooting attempt tripped the flash counter, disabled my Wifi, and caused me to be unable to download an OTA update.
The question is this...... what rooting method shoudl I be using for the USCC Galaxy S3, running 4.1.2? I'd love to be able to block ads again....... and I'd like to stay with the base OS if possible (not flashing it atm)'

Using that method should would, oldest method and always proves true. Like always, you're responsible for everything.

Tripping the flash counter doesn't matter... I have never had USC reject warranty service, and I don't use any counter reset tools.
Unfortunately, XDA isn't the best place to find support for USC phones... Do a Google search for TeamUSCellular and go there for detailed step by step guides.
Then, look carefully at some of the ROMs here on XDA... Several of the ones that use Aroma support multiple carriers.

Newb here,
Has anyone had any success in rooting the US Cellular SCH-R530 with build 4.1.2? I donated to the Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit cause but after an auto update the most recent build listed for US Cellular is still 4.1.1.

No I didn't 'ready' it but I did read it and that post was from a week ago. So I am following up as a lot can happen in 1 week. Either way, TeamUSCellular does not have anything on it at all. But thanks for all your help. I am now regretting the fact that I donated to the development of the toolkit. I guess if this isn't a good place to find help on US Cellular phones then there shouldn't be any US Cellular phones in the toolkit, but yet there is....hmmmm.

I think you need to look a little closer.
Go to Forum, go to the SG3 Development forum, go to SG3 Guides & Tutorials, then the 5th topic down is what you want (How To Root Jelly Bean LK5 & MB1).
It takes you step by step and even provides links to the files you need.
I just used this last week on a friend phone and it worked fine.

hello nobie here got a problem my uscc samsung galaxy s3 is stuck in roaming mode and can not use mobile data.
if i root it will it fix the roaming mode or do i need to have it re-flashed back to page plus or is there another way.

If, while in the Original Android Development section (where this thread was originally posted) you would have simply looked at the titles of the what... 30 threads here, you would have seen "[SGH-M919] CF-Auto-Root [ 1 2 3 ... Last ]" and been like "Because this thread has 'root' in the title, perhaps it pertains to rooting the SGH-M919."
To answer the question, yes, you can root your phone. Check that thread I so sarcastically mentioned.

You can. I have a Galaxy S4 that is running the same build and kernel version as yours. I rooted with CF-Auto-Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294005. Be warned, though! Rooting via CF-Auto-Root will trip the Knox Warranty Void counter. As of now, the counter cannot be reset. If you want to keep warranty, then root using SafeRoot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758. I have used both methods before and they work just fine.

I didnt wanna use the auto-root to void any warranty So is there another way to root that wont break warranty its a tmobile used phone so its not like i can jump the phone to upgrade either?

I just bought a T-Mobile Note 3 (N-900T) with 4.4.2 out of the box and have been looking through a billion posts trying to figure out how to root it. Some of the things I read suggest that something else might have been done first, because I'm joining in the middle of the ball game. So far I think I've found four ways to root:
1. Root de la Vega (for 4.4.2?).
2. Install TWRP (Installs Recovery and su?).
3. CF Auto Root (trips Knox?).
See how confused I am? I lost the fourth way. I can't figure out if any actually work on a new 4.4.2.
My desire is root and Recovery, no custom ROM and no Kingo/Vroot.
Comments please.

I agree with you. I have been researching this subject and still not sure what to use to ROOT. I rooted my Note 2 using Kingo Android Root and that was so simple.
Don't really know if I can use Kingo Android Root for 4.4.2?

I used CF auto root. look into something called triangle away.
I plan to keep my phone regardless, and I take care of it. There's always odin if you screw up so...

I built this tread just because I have answered this question about 4 times in the last two days. It is a work in progress but I hope to help others with their rooting questions. Hope this helps and if you have questions please ask it in my thread so I can make updates. Thanks.

To OP - why don't you want to use Kingosoft?
I use Kingosoft, no KNOX trip, work just fine for almost 1 month now. Also, I can unroot easily if I want to. In my past experience with Samsung phones, unrooting can be as complex as rooting it in the first place, so I appreciate the ability to unroot easily with Kingosoft.

Just as a clarification:
You have 4.4.2, rooted with that method, and it didn't trip the Knox counter?

As far as I understand it, there is currently no way to root a 4.4.2 Note 3 which doesn't trip Knox. There is some trickery where you can attain root on 4.4.2 without tripping Knox using Mobile Odin Pro, but that process requires that you to start on 4.3.

Oh crap, I didn't know you have 4.4.2. Sorry, Kingo won't work with Kit Kat.
I have 4.3.

Once your are on 4.4.2, there is currently no way to root it without tripping the KNOX. There are several ways to root but all will trigger the KNOX flag.

Thanks for your posting and info. Read it and you go into a lot of detail.
I guess I am too lazy to try to go through so many steps to root. I personally am looking for a program that will Root without all the additional things to download and install, etc. Until that program is identified, I will remain Stock and unRooted. Personally I am not worried about tripping Knox as I keep my phones for 1 year then pass them down to wife or kids when I upgrade.

I am not worried about tripping KNOX. Is there one program like Kingo Android Root that I used on my Note 2 to Root the Note 3? If so, please let us know what it is. Thanks!

That procedure is not complex. Install TWRP and it installs SuperSU as a bonus. The deterrant for some people, I think, is the need to use Odin to install TWRP. Maybe they will get that problem with GooApp fixed and TWRP installation will get easier. But if Odin is the problem then CF-Auto-Root is the same.

3. mo-moxx-fti9300
all of which are ZIP files.
I have Model SM-n900T using Android 4.4.2 T-Mobile Stock.
Does it matter which one of the three above that I would use?

1 is correct that is the model of your phone. *Actually SM-N9005 is the international model and sm-n900t is the tmobile variant but it should work*
If you just want root then CF auto root is good. If you are planning on adding a custom recovery or ROM I would recommend following the root options provided in the link a few comments above.

FFTony: Thank you very much for your suggestions. I have flashed roms on many of my previous phones and tried so many that it got to the point that I was flashing daily and returning back to stock. I do customize my Note 3 and have done so on many of my other phones. So, I think I will just root to uninstall bloatware. Some of the apks that I use are:
Android Assistant,
Calendar Status
Clean Master
Dolphin Browser Mini
EvernoteGo SMS Pro
HD Widgets
Kingsoft Office
MXPlayer
n7Player
Next Launcher
QuickPic
Swipe Home Button
Swipe Dialer Pro
Tunein Radio Pro
Various News Apks (News360 my favorite)
Titanium Backup Pro (when rooted and on my Note 2)
Just to name a few.
Tried many more but go back to these favorites.
So, Thank again!!!!

You are welcome. I was never into rooting until I purchased the note 3 and this is a phone that is a must to root if you want to take full advantage of all that it can do. I am also glad to give back to this community that helped me learn so much.

Totally agree with your comments regarding this community. They have helped me over the years, too.
I Unzip CF-Auto-Root and now have the following files:
TMAX.dll
Zlib.dll
ODIN3-V3.07.Exe
Odin3.ini
CF-Auto-Root-hite-hitexx-smn9005.tar.md5
Where do I go from here? I assume that I would connect my Note3 via USB and execute ODIN3-V3.07.exe.
All these unzipped files are in one folder.

Yes, open Odin place the .tar file in the PDA section. Make sure you do not check any boxes on the left. The only ones that should be checked is auto reboot and F. Reset Time. Then hit start.

This conversation is growing silly, I don't know to fault the carriers, manufactures, Google, or us the consumers. This is stupid. It's our device we shouldn't need to do all this to gain certain features. I wouldn't need root if you stop putting all this bull ish on my device, restricting r/w to external sd etc just pathetic. I'm not worried about tripping KNOX, I pushed her down on purpose !

[Q] KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING Set Warranty Bit: kernel - post bad 4.4.2 root

I upgraded to 4.4.2 on my TMobile Galaxy S4. I did this Via KIES. Afterwards, I tried to root - and this is where things seemed to go wrong.
I used ODIN 3.185, and used T-Mobile_OUDHS-Recovery-jfltetmo and then installed ROOT_M919UVUAMDL.
Since then, I have the
KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
Set Warranty Bit: kernel
Message at boot, and the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo.
I tried to use Odin to put over the top CF-Auto-Root-jfltetmo-jfltetmo-sghm919.tar
I tried also to use the SD card to update again to what I think is the stock firmware from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50977575&postcount=49&nocache=1&z=9496224221703208
When doing an update, there were a couple of errors - but it went through. However, on reboot the same error.
Any help would be extremely appreciated.

My next try is to do the unroot steps from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2335109
But hopefully someone can give some more advice before I wipe the whole thing.

Since it's a work in progress, I figure I will post as I go along.
I downloaded the 1.5gb TMB-M919UVUFNB4-20140314115123 file from the unroot link above. I then used Odin to install it... and was able to stop at step 9 - before doing the data wipe/factory restore. I can now get my phone to boot.
I am feeling so good - that I'll try to root again.

Rooted, and SuperSU instaled - all is well to this point...
Since I was fairly freaked out, hopefully this helps someone down the line (or me - since I'm fast to forget).

You tripped the Knox flag. That's all that happened. It won't affect your ability to use the phone. You didn't do anything wrong. it's normal when you root a Knox protected device.

I ran into the same issue as you on my TMobile Samsung Galaxy S4 and I wanted to say thanks for this post! It helped me get my phone restored back to the way it was and thankfully I didn't lose anything! Thanks so much!
Was wondering however.....how did you get it to root successfully after this?

That procedure is so old and outdated, you should really pay attention to what you read and the sites you visit.. Everything you need is here on XDA.. Use cf-auto root to root the phone, do whatever you want afterwards..

Appreciate the response. I should have mentioned that I did start off at XDA. I used this thread

....and it led me to use that link in my previous post. I figured since it was under the forums for my device and had been stickied, it would work fine. I didn't see anyone else on that thread report the issue I ran into, possibly because it worked prior to an update I had from Tmobile.
I will try your suggestions with cf-auto root. Thanks again for the help!

Hi, is there a way to get rid of it?
I'm rooted and have TWRP 2.8 no problems, also I'm on Insanity V11 ROM, but those lines are too ugly :crying::crying::crying:
