I know it is possible to root using something like connectbot; I searched around here. I could only find some posts in HTC EVO Shift 4G where they had steps. Which would be the same, just the files you need are different (obviously)
Good luck, be-careful with this method too. Without a computer to use to odin with (if something goes horribly wrong). You're really risking things.
You can use the app z4root to root without a PC. However, it does not work on froyo 2.2
Hello,
First, let me apologize if this has already been discussed. However, I couldn't seem to find any info about it. So, my question is: Can I root Jellybean 4.1 on my Galaxy Nexus i9250 without a computer? I bought the device second hand from somebody else (it wasn't used, it was pretty much sealed in box) so it already has an unlocked bootloader. It doesn't have CWM, I checked. Now, because the hard part is already done (unlocked bootloader), I should be able to root, and flash CWM through ROM Manager, right? That's the only obstacle between me and sweet roming! I don't have a windows computer that I canuse for this process, or else I would already be done.
Thanks!
Unfortunately you need to be able to flash the recovery to begin your rom-ing adventures and without root access your stuck doing it from the bootloader.
But all the tools you need are available for windows Linux and Mac so what you are looking to do is very possible with whatever hardware and operating system you have.
What exactly are you using for a computer so maybe I can get you pointed in the right direction.
I have an Asus Transformer with me, and a windows at home.... But, I'm not home, and I won't be for a while. I'm traveling until the 14th. Hence, my question. I suppose I shouldn't be ROM-ing without a computer available, but... It's so hard to resist!

an internet point will be your best friend
If you have the correct cables, you could use this fastboot binary on your tab to unlock your gnexus's bootloader and flash custom recovery, and root via flashable zip.
Moved To Q&A.. Please do not post any questions in the dev section..
nvm
Thanks, got it!

A friend of mine has the T-Mobile GS2 and I'm trying to help him get root. Unfortunately (for this purpose, for everything else it's fine) I only have a Linux box available. Apparently heimdall doesn't work with this model and I've been unable to find any other way to root via Linux. He currently has 2.6 on there. ZergRush doesn't work on this version either.
I've googled and searched and haven't been able to find anything. I find it hard to believe that there's no way to root this phone via Linux. Anybody can point me someplace that can help?
TIA

okay so I've had my Samsung Galaxy nexus since June 2nd. It has never been rooted or had a custom rom installed. and for a few days I've been starting to notice lagging and sometimes freezing, etc. I don't know what to do. I am considering rooting but don't wanna lose my stuff and don't want to have transfer everything back to my device. I also don't know what the best rom is for this phone. I really love this phone. Oh and also had issues with the keyboard. sometimes the number shortcuts when won't showup for example when I press and hold the letter W sometime the 2 sometime it hides behind the suggestion bar.
rooting is simple using a toolkit on computer. Transfer your stuff to your computer then put it back on your galaxy nexus when you're done rooting and unlocking the bootloader. Lots of good roms are out there just find the one you like best.

you will lose all your stuff when you unlock bootloader so it is necessary to transfer to pc before you unlock..and there is no "best" rom cuz everyone like different roms but CNA is the best IMO and then PA if you like hybrid
ok. thanks I'm just not sure about rooting. I've rooted other devices. but I am afraid to root my galaxy nexus.

here's the entire root process with the nexus
1) fastboot oem unlock
2) fastboot flash recovery nameofcwmortwrprecovery.img
3) adb push superuser.zip /data/media
4) flash said superuser zip.
done.
Alright so I currently don't have a PC.
And iv already messed around with trying to root with non legit apps
Now I know there's a way to to adb side load over wifi
Using another device using the terminal. I just can't find a legit guide to get me threw the process of being able to connect the 2 devices threw the emulator terminal.
I haven't rooted since back when untouched 3g was out. And then I was a proud owner of the oneplus one so there was no need to root.
I'm looking to root unlock bootloader get custom recovery the whole deal. Just need the correct way to connect to adb without PC
