[Q] root using Linux. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

A friend of mine has the T-Mobile GS2 and I'm trying to help him get root. Unfortunately (for this purpose, for everything else it's fine) I only have a Linux box available. Apparently heimdall doesn't work with this model and I've been unable to find any other way to root via Linux. He currently has 2.6 on there. ZergRush doesn't work on this version either.
I've googled and searched and haven't been able to find anything. I find it hard to believe that there's no way to root this phone via Linux. Anybody can point me someplace that can help?
TIA

[HOWTO] Rooting your Samsung Intercept the Easy Way

Well, a lot of places are listing difficult methods to root their Sprint/Virgin Mobile (which I have) Samsung Intercept. Here is an easy way I discovered:
1) Download the Samsung Intercept drivers at: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-M910ZKASPR
2) Install the drivers for your computer (XP/Vista)
3) Download and install the SuperOneClickRoot 1.5.5 (latest version) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
4) Run the SuperOneClickRoot program after enabling USB debugging mode on your Samsung Intercept which is plugged into your USB port.
5) Viola, your Intercept will be rooted now.
If you have the Virgin Mobile version then you will have the cheapest unlimited wifi/USB tethering option ever!
Enjoy...
one stop root
I have followed these instruction, however after Dling the lastest version 1.5.5 When i click root it just stops responding.?. I have debugging on tried the turn debugging off and back on none seem to work for my intercept. Using win7 any elp for my noob azz would be appreciated :}
one question?
i want to know if this way works. I put the application in the micro sd, the search in androzip and install, work or not. I did so in the hero and it worked fine whit another application similar to this.
I havent tested this method on Windows 7 but it worked perfectly on my Windows XP SP3 machine.

Did you make sure to install the drivers first?

Also you wouldn't run this program from the card itself...

This is one way, but there is an alternative and in my opinion "easier" way of achieving "Temporary Root"...
There is an app called Z4root and the author of this app is one of our very own. Please thank z4ziggy and Sebastian Krahmer's rageagainstthecage because if it wasn't for them it would not be possible...
Navigate HERE to see the details and the download. It is very simple and as I have figured out, only the "Temporary Root" option works on the Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept at this time.
Once the app is installed just click temporary root and you have root until your device is rebooted...
Have Fun and Be Safe!
question
this if for android 2.1 version or for 2.2 version?
Android 2.1 version. Unfortunately I just found out that I got only temporary root this easy way so apparently the settings didn't stick after I rebooted my phone
I would recommend the z4root option above
Temporary root only. Does Sprint version get permanent one?

I am not sure about that, but z4root is another easy way to enable a temporary root in order to flash a custom rom on the intercept...
I have been developing and hacking android since day one[tmo g1] and want to flash my intercept. Just holding off until a more stable rom/kernel is released.
Had a baby girl 2 months aggo and don't have the devel time needed to push out a stable rom by myself...
Y'all can msg me on gtalk at anytime if you have any questions or concerns on my new screen name androidsamurai.
Happy new year guys...

I just dragged Universal Androot onto my SDcard and installed it.
Pressed the root button and it was done in 5 seconds...or am I missing something?
Is this temporary root or perma root?
Btw I looked on samsung.com for drivers for the Intercept I could never find any ):
question
the z4root works whit 2.2froyo in the intercept or is only for 2.1
looks like z4 only for 2.1 its not working for me
Hey, has anyone actually had success from the guide with a Froyo Intercept VM / Sprint?
Temporary root so far it seems.

[Q] qtadb cannot run as root in production builds error...

Hi,
So I have been playing with my phone a bit, I have opened qtadb just fine before, but now I am getting this error (?). Basically I want to know if this is going to cause problems when I decide to flash a new rom.
I am currently on the stock rom,
1.32.707.5 (from a bit of looking around on this site this version seems out of date, but i have not got an OTA update.)
The phone is rooted(via visionary), and I have installed a few root apps.
I have also have booted into the bootloader (just to have a look).
hopefully that is enough information to either tell me if this is a problem or help me fix this problem. Thanks!

Am I right in assuming your running this on a MAC? If so I believe it could be a dependency issue, try running it form command line and see if that gives you any more clues? Sorry can't be more specific but I exclusively use Linux, I know franklin02uk was having this problem and it was an unresolved dependency
I as m running windows, but yeah, I'll look up the command line manual and see if I can find anything.

Issues Rooting with Superoneclick

Hi, I have tried rooting about 20 times (not even kidding), and almost every time it gets stuck on step #7. I have installed drivers from LG and have phone in debugging mode. (I tried doomlord, but it won't recognize my Nitro) Does anyone have any advice to help me root my Nitro?
*Mods, feel free to move this to the rooting section, it just wouldn't let me post in there*
Try rooting it the way they root the optimus. That's what I did and it worked fine.

Did you use the latest SuperOneClick 2.3.3 for rooting your device? I can confirm it works with LG LU6200...

If this isn't working for you, this should:

(its working in ADB mode, make sure your device is in USB debugging mode and connected to your PC)
Good luck!
Use doomlords root

Use SuperOneClick v.2.3.2 and not 2.3.3. The latest version don't want to root our Nitro. I can't understand why, but 2.3.2 version root very well.

Remove the SD card( or unmount it), i got the same problem here and it thats what worked
What worked for me was installing the Android SDK package.
I was hanging at step #7 as well and after installing the package it went through.

Click on a link in my signature and download from my guide. I have an issue to upload the file right here.
problems rooting too!
So this being my first post and all please dont freak. I searched as best I could to find the proper thread to ask this and this seemed like the best option. So here it goes.
I myself tried rooting my phone with Superoneclick and after numerous attempts I failed miserably. So I tried Doomlord's rooting method. I thought I had figured it out because at the end it said "OK!" and it even rebooted my phone but when I tried to DL Titanium backup and busybox it said it could not gain root access. My question is, first would it be safe to attempt the root process again, or if not any ideas on what I might have done wrong and maybe a solution to fix it?
Thanks again
P.S dear Mod if this was the inappropriate place to post this I apologize in advance.
i would download the superuser app and see if tibu finds root
also, there should be no prob running the rooting app again if you choose to, if you are rooted already it should return a *already rooted* message.
So I tried dl superuser and that did nothing. I even did a master reset maybe thinking that I might of changed a setting I want suppose to, and even that didn't work. Like I said I can't get SOC past step 7 and I've tried all the tips I read on here to get past that problem but nothing. Doomlords looks like it worked and it reboots my phone but still nothing. I would really truly appreciate any help!
thanks again

I cant get my screen shot to upload. I've tried everything. Anyhow, I still can't get my phone rooted. When I rooted my Aria, I used a program on my MAC that rooted it in about 20 seconds. Whatever happened to that?

Apples and oranges. The two programs used to install custom recovery on the Aria utilize exploits in the HBOOT, which is something only HTC devices have.
What software version do you have on your device? (Look in Settings > About Phone > Software version)
I'm having the same situation. Everything I've read says that if you did the security update without root already then you can't root now. I would love for some one to prove me wrong and show me a way. IM running 2.3.5 v10j with kernel 2.6.35.11.
Thanks

You have the recent update installed which makes it impossible to root the device. There are still methods to get the device rooted but it is not simple and basically involves this process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488
I would urge you to make sure you know what you're doing before attempting this though.
I had the above problem with not being able to root my phone due to the software version i had. I had to use the "unbricking guide" and after some challenges i was able to restore the phone to stock with root. It is risky, but at this moment im not sure theres any other way to do it, unless someone with programming skills can find an alternate method to go back to a previous version of the software without resetting or unbricking the entire phone.

Root without Computer?

Hello,
First, let me apologize if this has already been discussed. However, I couldn't seem to find any info about it. So, my question is: Can I root Jellybean 4.1 on my Galaxy Nexus i9250 without a computer? I bought the device second hand from somebody else (it wasn't used, it was pretty much sealed in box) so it already has an unlocked bootloader. It doesn't have CWM, I checked. Now, because the hard part is already done (unlocked bootloader), I should be able to root, and flash CWM through ROM Manager, right? That's the only obstacle between me and sweet roming! I don't have a windows computer that I canuse for this process, or else I would already be done.
Thanks!
Unfortunately you need to be able to flash the recovery to begin your rom-ing adventures and without root access your stuck doing it from the bootloader.
But all the tools you need are available for windows Linux and Mac so what you are looking to do is very possible with whatever hardware and operating system you have.
What exactly are you using for a computer so maybe I can get you pointed in the right direction.
I have an Asus Transformer with me, and a windows at home.... But, I'm not home, and I won't be for a while. I'm traveling until the 14th. Hence, my question. I suppose I shouldn't be ROM-ing without a computer available, but... It's so hard to resist!

an internet point will be your best friend
If you have the correct cables, you could use this fastboot binary on your tab to unlock your gnexus's bootloader and flash custom recovery, and root via flashable zip.
Moved To Q&A.. Please do not post any questions in the dev section..
nvm
Thanks, got it!

My S3 has 4.1.1 update. Can I root still?

Hey guys.
I manually flashed the new update 4.1.1. but now got the itch to root my S3 and go more stock android maybe cyanogen mod. Anyways I was trying to root using this method.
ww w.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ6cJxl5DTs
My computer is a Macbook air with the latest update of Mountain Lion if that matters any. I tried the method above a few times and it keeps failing. Fortunately no harm was done to my device. Can I still root (preferably with a one click type system) with the latest OS?
thanks for any help guys
P.S. I may need things simple lol
you can its not any harder. cant say why you cant now tho as im a windows user. guess you are full blown stock w stock recovery?

Yeah I'm fully stock with the latest update sprint just rolled out. The way in the video did not work so should I try something else or do I need to wait till people smarter than me make adjustments to the files?
shouldnt need any adjustments. cant see any reason that the current method wouldnt work. where is it failing like do u get any error messages. do u have any access to a windows pc? bootcamp? something? u could regain root again real quick if u did
Boot Camp. This it's the only way for Mac. If you want something easy. If not you most read about "adb". Heimdall was the software that works for Mac but isn't available for the GS3.
I wrote a quick tutorial for other user about how to install Windows with Boot Camp. PM me if you want it.

i miss having heimdall as an option.. wish it was cimpatible with the siii
As of right now you're out of luck. A command-line script was released specifically for rooting GSIIIs on OS X (literally the EASIEST and most painless method I've used) , but it doesn't work with devices running 4.1.1. I found that out the hard way.
You'll need Windows or Boot Camp for sure, and a likely copy of Team Epic's Root From Recovery zip to bypass the recovery overwrite on 4.1.1.
