[Q] Need help accessing system files Htc Evo

Hi Guys,
I am kinda new to Android and the Evo. I have OTA update 2.15.00.07.28 and have managed to sucessfully rooted my phone using Unvoked 3. I installed Baked Snack 1.7 Rom with Low Ridder theme. I have Rom manager 2.5.0.4 with ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1. What I am having trouble doing is finding the system files! I searched the threads here / Google with no luck. I would like to be able to pull open all the system files from my Evo on my computer so I can better understand how Frayo 2.2 runs. When I boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and select mount sd card My files appear on my computer. However when I select mount system files nothing happens. I can't get a grasp of what mounting system files in the recovery does neither find a way to explore my Evo's system files. I saw a rooted app avaible for download in the app store that revieals system files on rooted phones but I would rather pull them up on my computer. I am using windows vista home 32bit OS. Thanks for any help in advanced.

Ok. For now, viewing your Android's true system files on your actual pc is impossible. However your can browse through them and make all the changes you need on your phone. First of all though. You need to be properly and fully rooted by using Toast's method part 1 and 2. This will properly root and unlock NAND protection on your phone to allow read/write access to /system. Unrevoked is **** for root as far as Im concerned. Although I would recommend using their S-off tool for further access. Search the XDA forums for toast's method for full root. But first, get comfortable with the mechanics of ADB. There are simple tutorials on XDA as well. After that make a small purchase and buy Root Explorer to browse everything you need! But be careful. you can view any system file you want to view, on your computer. pull the file using adb, change it, push it back.
i'm not going to give a tutorial on adb though. there are plenty of threads about it.

If you just want to explore the system files and poke around, I would suggest downloading the ROM you are using and just unzipping to look at the files. If you want to go deeper you can download an android kitchen and decompile.

True. But consider the normal user, who in this case didn't even know how to properly root. I was suggesting the most problem free way for him.

Hey thanks for all the replys. I did not know evoked don't fully unlock the phone. I will look into toast tutorial. Was in kinda a hurry found the first thing on rooting and thought it worked because it allowed me to install roms. I have net seeing a lot on adb I think when I can find some time I will look into that as well.

Unrevoked 3 is a full permanent root.

I dont know alot about rooting but it seemed to me that the newest unrevoked done it all for me. If there is something its not done i have not missed it yet

Issues Rooting with Superoneclick

Hi, I have tried rooting about 20 times (not even kidding), and almost every time it gets stuck on step #7. I have installed drivers from LG and have phone in debugging mode. (I tried doomlord, but it won't recognize my Nitro) Does anyone have any advice to help me root my Nitro?

Try rooting it the way they root the optimus. That's what I did and it worked fine.

Did you use the latest SuperOneClick 2.3.3 for rooting your device? I can confirm it works with LG LU6200...

Remove the SD card( or unmount it), i got the same problem here and it thats what worked

What worked for me was installing the Android SDK package.
I was hanging at step #7 as well and after installing the package it went through.

problems rooting too!
So this being my first post and all please dont freak. I searched as best I could to find the proper thread to ask this and this seemed like the best option. So here it goes.
I myself tried rooting my phone with Superoneclick and after numerous attempts I failed miserably. So I tried Doomlord's rooting method. I thought I had figured it out because at the end it said "OK!" and it even rebooted my phone but when I tried to DL Titanium backup and busybox it said it could not gain root access. My question is, first would it be safe to attempt the root process again, or if not any ideas on what I might have done wrong and maybe a solution to fix it?

also, there should be no prob running the rooting app again if you choose to, if you are rooted already it should return a *already rooted* message.

So I tried dl superuser and that did nothing. I even did a master reset maybe thinking that I might of changed a setting I want suppose to, and even that didn't work. Like I said I can't get SOC past step 7 and I've tried all the tips I read on here to get past that problem but nothing. Doomlords looks like it worked and it reboots my phone but still nothing. I would really truly appreciate any help!

I cant get my screen shot to upload. I've tried everything. Anyhow, I still can't get my phone rooted. When I rooted my Aria, I used a program on my MAC that rooted it in about 20 seconds. Whatever happened to that?

Apples and oranges. The two programs used to install custom recovery on the Aria utilize exploits in the HBOOT, which is something only HTC devices have.
What software version do you have on your device? (Look in Settings > About Phone > Software version)

I'm having the same situation. Everything I've read says that if you did the security update without root already then you can't root now. I would love for some one to prove me wrong and show me a way. IM running 2.3.5 v10j with kernel 2.6.35.11.

You have the recent update installed which makes it impossible to root the device. There are still methods to get the device rooted but it is not simple and basically involves this process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488
I would urge you to make sure you know what you're doing before attempting this though.

I had the above problem with not being able to root my phone due to the software version i had. I had to use the "unbricking guide" and after some challenges i was able to restore the phone to stock with root. It is risky, but at this moment im not sure theres any other way to do it, unless someone with programming skills can find an alternate method to go back to a previous version of the software without resetting or unbricking the entire phone.

[Q] Custom ROM with un-root ability

Hey everyone,
Just got a GN a few weeks ago, and I am dying to try a custom ROM, but I got dinged by my work with my infuse because they have a no-root policy strickly enforced when accessing our corporate email.
I was not able to use an un-root app like root keeper, apparently because the ZEUS rom I was using had an autoroot on startup.
I am hoping the nexus has better options for using the un-root app, to (temporarily) unroot my phone when accessing my mail.
I have been reading that it is better to manually root the handset, rather than use a toolkit, which I am OK with; but I really would be interested in hearing from someone that has successfully used an unroot app to remove root.

CM9 lets you restrict root access to ADB only. Might want to check that out

We access our corporate mail through the GOOD for enterprise application, and and that scans for root on load.

If the app scans for just the root binary or Superuser app, then I don't see a way to prevent it from detecting root without actually being unrooted. It likely looks in all $PATH dirs for su, and then in /system/app or /data/app for the application to grant permissions. Any ROM can be unrooted, just remove the su binary (and any symlinks) and the Superuser app before flashing.

Damn, they take the fun out of the whole Nexus experience.

Yeah, thanks. I guess what I am asking is if any of the unroot apps work with the custom ROMs the Nexus has. The ZEUS rom I was using with the infuse had something related to voodoo that kept ROOT, and the unroot apps did not have an affect.
I have only flashed two android ROMs with my infuse, but am an application developer by trade, so I am not skeered by the command prompt. I know there are a few CM9 based ROMs out there. I was looking at the PARANOID rom just cause that seemed interesting with the tablet hybrid. I just would like to know before I go through the whole flashing proc. that I can unroot before I connect to my work email (about once a week).

Depending on the apps, root permission allows an app to gain full control of your device, so if one is not careful, he may let a rouge app into the phone. From a security standpoint, the rouge app may steal data from the email, which no company wants.
Think root as your computer's "Run as Administrator", same reason companies/schools limit user permission using User Policy(or whatever it's called)

Could just make a script to delete su and superuser and busybox, and make a flashable zip to put them back again.
Would require a couple of reboots every time but would still be quick to do once you had the zips set up

That's why I asked if anyone had success with the RootKeeper app. Although I would be interested in building an android script, my experience is soley with vb/C# web & desktop applications.

Use SuperSU. What I did was temporarily block root, installed whatever MDM app was needed, set up the stock Exchange information, and allowed root again.

Sorry for the very late reply. I can confirm this does work with GFE. The unroot effectively does not cause a compliance violation.
Overall it was a hassle to verify, even though our infrastructure team was completely on board. GOOD was balking when I attempted to register a second device (even temporarily) with the same sim card. It would only throw an ambiguous error 'unknown error'.
I could go on, but that is the subject for a rant thread.

I have made the transition from IOS to Andriod I was a wiz with the Iphone, Jailbreaking and so on... But now I have the Samsung s3 Galaxy and I want to find out whats the main tricks and tips .... For instance what is Rooting? And what software would I need for this.. And what is the latest software? u can root using odin v1.5, download pda files according to ur firmware on ur mobile on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331253 and flash it in the download mode, and u r done!!

Ok I dont want to stuff my phone, how do I know what firmware it is I goto the About section and nothing says Firmware all I see is

Nothing on pc just get a file manager of play store then in phone browser Google universal androot and dl the .apk file open it in file manager then dl ROM maneger off the play store then install recovery dl a zip open recovery then flash it custom ROM

Cons all I can think of is that you probably lose your warranty but there are ways to fool your OEM technician that your phone was never rooted. And you run the ever diminishing risk of bricking your phone if something goes wrong. (chances are close to nill these days)

flashing is like completely changing your OS. like from froyo to gingerbread. while rooting is gaining extra access into your handheld, like unlocking administration on your PC.

Root is one of the machines as necessary when we want to intervene more deeply into the operating system your device running Android

Yes I definatley Love this phone, Im in love.. so android is my new baby I now know what rooting and flashing is.. Next step is what should I do before I decide to choose a Rom ... Should I flash it back to stock? That is always better then the Service provider software correct? But there is one thing that I want ... it is called the NAVIGON its a navigation program... hmm what should I do? And how do I find the stock files for my phone to flash and the latest ones at that.

No Cydia equivalent in Android. There's many different app stores for Android, just no one central. After all you can install third party software in Android without root, you just un-click option in the menu. Root gives you freedom and access to apps that need root to work.

You must not forget I am new to this stuff so when you say "just un-click option in the menu" I dont have a clue what you are talking about which menu and what option. And what does it do? A small step by step would be great.
And Could you give me just a few app store links and if there's a specialty link that specializes in Rooted appz a link would be great sorry but like I said I am just learning and so far all these comments are helping me with the lingo and so on...

You just go into Settings --> Applications --> click Unknown sources in order to allow instalation of non-Market apps. I know that you are new but it does not have anything to do with root as you can do it as well on unrooted phone and believe me I am not a user manual
As for the sources for apps, just use the Market as well as specific threads in this forum in your phone's section from where you can download an app, transfer it to the SD card in your phone and install directly from the file. For that you need to click the option I mentioned above as without it you can only install from the Market. That's one thing.
As for apps that need root, it is a different issue. I don't know what kind of apps you need. Maybe check at first the most popular ones like Titanium Backup, Ad Free, Root Explorer, SetCPU, Terminal Emulator or Avast that have additional options like firewall on rooted phones. Thanks thats good. But my question now is..... I didn't see the ROM said you tried to flash in the ATT Dev section? Can you post a link or describe the ROM better. No ROMS should make you lose root access.

Cyanogen Mod 10.1.3.1 thats because I used ROM Mgr for all my roms like most of us do I believe, and use Xda for all of my stock Jb ROM downloads along with oden. I flashed through Clockwork Recovery and this is the first time I flashed a ROM and lost root after aperantly other people are having some of the same probs.

I would recommend you don't use that ROM especially if other people are having issues. I would recommend the cyanogenmod ROMS and the hyperdrive Touchwiz ROMS.

This might help but I'm not so sure but this might help: Go to Settings>Developer Options and Above the sub-menu "Debugging" there's Root Access, by default it should be Apps Only but hopefully this could help a little...

Hey!!!, So I had the same problem; I've searched and searched for almost 2 months for an answer... and nothing. To be honest I was actually just going to give up and accept CM10.1.3.1 as my phone's tomb. Although, I finally fixed it in the oddest way—essentially fiddling around with the phone before bed.... serious ciber-ich—So forget anything anyone has even talked about, up to this point, because it isn't a problem with your phone; in fact you are still rooted, you've just lost access to your root due to a root-permission war between your phone and superuser/supersu (what eva).
So if anyone is interested in fixing this, here, this is what I did to fix it.
This was my first failed attempt
1) Reinstall Root (Fail!!!!)
2) Use new super User (Fail!!!!!!)

Here's the Fix
1) Reinstall Root with SuperSU ( Probably didn't need to do this; however, due to all the superuser-instalation-overkill, it's probably best.)
2) Uninstall all other superuser apps you may have on your phone—also do not use CWM Superuser (It doesn't have what it takes)
3) Go to App Management, uninstall SuperSU's last update
4) Clear SuperSU's catch (self explanatory)
5) Go into AppDrawer, Open SuperSU app and make sure
- Enabled -- Yes
- Survival mode -- No
- Logging -- Access only
- Trust System User -- Yes
- *************** Respect CM root settings********** no!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not respect that ****!!!!!!!!
6) Enjoy your root access again :victory:

So you also deteled superuser from system/xbin/su..?
