It does what it says it does. If you think you have an app causing problems and not your software/firmware, you can test it by using safe mode. Similar to safe mode in Windows.
Except - not all programs are disabled in Safe Mode (some are, some aren't).
But yeh - you need to tap-and-hold the screen where it says "power off".
Its like Windows .But good point,i didnt know about this option.

I believe all downloaded apps are disabled, leaving only system apps.
Very nice, I didn't know about this until now

Wow, good to know.

you can also do it from a powered off state: on the google logo hold volume down until it boots fully into android.
Nice

So if I have an evil downloaded app, I can boot without that app and uninstall it? - - Sweet...

OK,
So basically, safe mode disables all third party apps. This is because it might be causing problems like apps crashing, battery drains and reboots. So when you go into this option it disables all of the third party apps completely. This method is to check if the apps are causing the problem. If not then it is probably a hardware problem so you can take it to repairs. It might even be the problem if your battery is dying on a custom ROM. So basically it is a help tool.
Regards,
UselessSniper001
I just had a tech tell me to do this to help with troubleshooting an issue on my phone.
Oddly, it didn't disable all the downloaded apps: I have TouchPal Contacts and Dialer set as default and they were still loaded.
If you try safe mode and notice your phone is faster and behaves better then you likely have a bad app or maybe too many apps.
Warning: If you go into safe mode you will lose all your widgets when you reboot into regular mode.

Is there a picture app/ feature that allows you to quickly take a picture without having to unlock the phone?
Windows and crappie have this features and I wanted on my S3.
Thanks

Thanks, but the feature mentioned above does not support codes so it does not work when the phone is locked.
Do you have a GS3?
Why not try adding the camera app to one of the shortcuts on the lockscreen?

This is why:
1) Faster camera launch.
2) You don't have to enter a password every time you want to take a picture yet your phone its still locked/secured.
3) If you want someone else to take a pic, you have to stop and unlock the phone first or give them your password.
4) When the shortcut is on the lock screen, you have to enter the password before allowing you to take the pic. You'll miss the moment.
5) With Windows 7 and Crapple you don't have to unlock and could quickly launch the camera. Also, all the pictures you take at the moment are visible w/o unlocking.
It would be a good feature to have on the GS3.
Would be a great add on

of course that would be an inconvenience if you have a password on your phone (which i understand most people do.) i on the other hand do not as i dont let my phone out of my sight. i use the shortcut but thats just me and like they say to each his own right.
I would assume if you have a pin unlock code or something else it would be there no matter what app you use

There is an app for this but it requires having a dedicated shutter button on the device.
May I ask how you plan to take a picture without having some sort of GUI?

If memory serves me right, that has a dedicated camera button. If you really really really want this feature, you could remap the home button to function as your camera button, then run the navigation bar that appears in galaxy nexus devices and devices without hardware buttons
Can't you make a tasker function for that

You can wait for Android 4.2 since this functionally is now built into the lock screen.

Yes it does but I didnt have to use the button to do it. You pushed the unlock button, then slid the lock ring onto the camera icon (assuming you had it on your lock screen) and you could take a picture. You would see the 3 sec preview of it, and then take more pics. If you tapped the small pic of the last image, and it would take you to the pattern/number lock. That way someone couldn't see your pics without the pass.

Hi, Got an unrooted s3 with software 4.0.4. If I exit a number of programs such as poweramp or several games without turning the volume to zero in these programs, the phone talks. If I click on a folder it says "folder open". If I go to touchwiz edit it says "open homescreen page edit". Talkback in accessibility is switched off. My searches have thrown up a few similar cases but with no resolutions. I would welcome any suggestions.
Check driving mode. If on, turn it off.

Thanks Doc. Doesn't help though. Driving mode was off.
Sounds like you have TalkBack on. Settings/Accessibility/TalkBack.
Nope. Not that. Talkback in accessibility and drive mode are both switched off.
Im at a loss man. Sorry. Maybe try toggling both of those on/off again. Otherwise you could reflash your rom, faactory reset, or see if you cant watch a logcat to see whats happening when it does this.
Ive seen others ask this but dont recall anyone posting their fixes.
Are you on a custom rom or kernel?

You could root and flash a rooted stock Rom.

Phone is not rooted. Will probably try a hard reset if no other resolutions come to mind. Thanks anyway everyone.
Found the solution and thought I'd post it here in case anyone else had the same problem. Disable google text to speech and Samsung TTS. Got this solution from circuit89. Many thanks, whoever you are.
I already have Unknown Sources checked. I was able to download third party apps in the past. Now when i try to install third party apps, on the installation screen it will not let me press the "install" button and nothing happens. So i have to press the "cancel" button. Anybody else experience this and know whats wrong?

If you installed screen adjuster, turn it off. It is a bug of the app.
what exactly do you mean by a screen adjuster app? An app that gets you new wallpaper, a app that adjusts brightness, or an app that adjusts the color/gamma? Which one?

When you open an apk file to install the app, do you get a list of options of which installer to use?

Awesome!!! I couldn't figure this out for the life of me. I had to manually update my Note 3 to Kit Kat in which it wiped my phone, so I lost a bunch of 3rd party apps that I needed to reinstall. One of the new apps my buddy recommended during the in between time of me setting back up my phone was called "Twilight", a app to take the blues out and allow for more dimming of the screen for a better sleep before bed because of all those new studies saying the screen messes with melatonin levels and causes technology hangovers lol. A quick uninstall of that app and bam, it let me press the install button.

I got my SM-P601 about 2 weeks ago, and it has been working perfectly since then, until last night. I left my note 10.1 with my father and left, when I got back, it was acting really weird. When I press the power button, you hear that sound that it woke up, but the screen doesn't power up until about 2 seconds later, it performs normally afterwards. Tried rebooting, no luck. It still gets weirder, so I leave it for an hour or so, when I try later, the screen no longer powers up (I don't know it's that or it has failed, crashed or something) but it is obviously powered up because when I press the power button, you hear that usual sound, and the same thing when you unlock it, I navigated through pages and even opened up some games, it's all working, except there's no screen, just plain black. The bigger problem is, I rooted it, so no warranty for me.

If you can get to recovery power+volume up , then wipe data & reboot .
I tend to agree, factory reset is worth trying.
Alright I'm gonna try that, but I'm gonna need help navigating through the menu. After I power it off, I press the volume up and power and release the power button after about 5 seconds right? (I can't tell when the samsung logo shows up). The thing I wanna make sure of, the factory reset option, is it the third or fourth option? I am not sure if it is the same as my GS4. The confirmation afterwards is the eighth option. Can someone confirm that?

It`s the fourth line " wipe data/factory reset.

Just because your Knox flag has been tripped, does not automatically mean your warranty has been completely voided. Samsung is going to have to prove that your rooting the tablet is what caused the screen failure.
Were you running a custom ROM or kernel? If not, then there is no way I can think of that simply rooting the tablet caused the screen failure.
Now that's not to say your warranty isn't voided for another reason such as the tablet was dropped et al.
Just thinking outside the box... Did you happen to have Screen Filter or a like application installed at the time your screen went black? If so, someone may have adjusted the brightness setting to zero and that could be causing the problem.
Good luck.
I hope that's the case, can they even tell it is rooted without the screen being on?
To answer your questions, I haven't installed a custom ROM neither a screen filter app, I tried adjusting the brightness multiple times so one of the tries must have actually hit the correct place, still no effect though.
If nothing works, I think my only option is to take it back to samsung.

ya you should try samsung .at this point it wont hurt .just tell them screen went out and go from there. don't mention root .unless they ask.they will be able to tell anyway.this should be covered under warranty.good luck. let us know how it goes.
I had the exact same issue with this tablet.
The problem is that the backlight is dead.
If you look closely at the screen under the light, you'll be able to see some icons and letters.
In my case, Samsung did not cover the warranty because my device was not purchased in Canada and it was rooted.
I mean Canada didn't even have the device at the time.
Long story short, I did something bad to get my tablet "repaired".
But I blame Samsung for having such a crappy warranty service.
Yeah I think I'll just take it to them. I'll let you know what happens.

Just a wild guess but I suppose you could go buy a new one from a retailer here in Canada, swap out the faulty one for the new one and return it claiming it's faulty (I doubt any of them check the SN on the back and the one on the box match), or I guess you could even swap the SN on the box from the SN on the US box so it does match.
Not saying he did that, but it's the easiest way to get it "repaired"
Come to think of it you can do this for any tablet, even though this is downright fraud. So please don't.
HI, I have been having a Terrible lag issue with my SGH-497 (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1). I can Swype or tap something and it take almost 5-8 second for it respond. I want to troubleshoot the reason behind this. I have successfully started it in Safe mode (starting it and holding down the volume down button). Here, everything seems to work perfectly. On a computer, I can usually figure out what the culprit is, but on the droid, I can't. How do I figure out what app is causing my issue? If I go to the task manager on droid, and clear the RAM, it would close about 40 apps... too many to try one by one...lol
Thanks in advance!
Just a quick tip: you can reboot into safe mode by holding down the power button until the power off prompt pops up. Then long press power off.
