[Q] Wired Tethering Vs Wireless Tethering - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Greetings my fellow flashaholics! I have a question, couldnt find nothing really on this particular subject. For the longest, I've been using the tether clockwork mod app (before flashing anything)
Last night, I took the plunged and flashed FreeGS3 v2.0. To my surprise, the tether app did not reset its counter, even after wiping data/fact reset/ dalvik. That is still boggling the hell out of me.
What I want to know is which method drains the battery quicker? USB tethering (altho it will be charging at the same time) or wireless tether even if connected to my wall charger? Im guessing wireless tether because its using the radio and the distance of the broadcasted signal takes a toll on the battery. Reason for my concern is that I do not want my phone feeling like a microwave when tethering, or better yet, I would like to use the method that heats the phone the less. I know I can run trial and error tests, but Im looking for a quick answer.
On a sidenote, any thoughts as to why the tether clockwork mod app didnt reset itself? I did uninstall the app from pc and phone, Im guessing there are maybe some registry info that is still retained, or possibly some traces left thru out android somewhere.

[Q] Wireless Tethering and Factory Reset

I had a couple of questions. First off, I'm running 2.2 and I'm rooted so I was wondering if I did a factory reset on my phone would I need to re-root the device? As for the second question, I'm trying to figure out why I can't get Barnacle WiFi Tether or Wireless Tethering for Root Users to work with my Inc, I've searched several forums and people say it's 2.2, they say it works fine, they say make sure you don't have WEP enabled, but strangely the D2 that I own works just fine with Barnacle. Any advice from anyone who's gotten these apps to work? I messed around with the duns to try the 3G Mobile Hotspot, and decided I liked the others better because they say how much data I've been using so I (think) I changed them back properly. Thanks in advance, and sorry for the wall of text!

Just a friendly bit of help.....wifi tether

for those of you looking for a stable wifi tethering app for your newely rooted mytouch slide, and espically if you are on CM6.1 RC2... this works perfectly, ive been useing it for several days without issue...
just thought id share the tidbit to ya all
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre14.apk&can=2&q=
I've been using the same since RC2 (I am now on the latest nightly, but still working).
just so everyone knows, i posted this cuz after a few hours of looking and total fustration, the forms here didnt lead me to a good tether app, so i did some leg work of my own, figured id save everyone time, no credit owed to me.... just being a good CM'er
i know this wasn't the case in the past..
but is there a way to run wifi in infastructure mode? or at least fake it so i can connect to kindle3?
running CM6.1 RC2
thanks.
mangle
try barnacle for the kindle but the one he just posted is a good working one.
these wifi apps create basically an ad-hoc connection, i know theres a way to connect to a pc and then create a hotspot useing the wife then basically bridge the connections, i had to go through it when i had an ipod touch..... its a silly long process but idk if thatd help
I use wireless tether 2.0.5-pre15 with no problems on the latest cm6 nightly, but it's an ad-hoc connection. Need an infrastructure connection for the Nook Color, as well.

Serious tethering issues...

I tried the latest Wireless tether app, it was a dud, not biggie
So then I tried the other stable version (2.06?) and it works.... For about 5-10 minutes. The app gives no errors, the phone gets no errors, the 3G icon doesn't go to 1x, or disappear, or anything like that. it is just... Not sure how exactly to describe it. It just. Doesn't. Work. Its almost like my connection is cut off without knowing.
Cyanogenmod7 has a portable wi-fi hotspot feature unlocked. It sort of works. Then I try downloading a simple 20mb file. It will work up for around 8MB, maybe 15. Then, on the phone, the 3G icon turns white?? I guess that's a warning for the thing that happens next... Ok, so it turns white, then the bars turn white, then, omg, the f-ing 3G icon disappears!
Wtf???!?!!!? Does it go to 1x? Nope. It literally flashes from 3G, to nothing, then says 3G again, then nothing (while staying white) and it will do this until I disconnect from my laptop.
What the f is the meaning of this?? Has Verizon found some way to sniff in on what we're doing and somehow figured out that I'm tethering and cuts off my data until I stop my behavior?
I would also like to point out, I have barely downloaded 2GB of data so far for this month. So, I think that's about average for most people.

Have you tried the new Kernel?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905873
I can actually fix this... Maybe... my friend noticed something SUPER useful... when you wifi tether don't plug the phone into a charger... I used to get the 3g just all together disappearing and wireless tether crapping out all the time then I started tether with out it plugged in and now I tether for hours no problem what so ever.

Hours? On a stock battery? Cool if you can but I know I can't...at least not for hour(s). Maybe for an hour or so lol.
Personally I would try and download a different wireless tether app from the market. I had an issue where I would make a connection, it would work for a minute or two and then just drop for no reason, even though both pc and phone said they were still connected. Uninstalled and then downloaded a later version and its been fine ever since.
Change Channel?
Have you tried changing the channel on the tethering app?
Open Wireless Tether App>Menu>Settings>Change Channel.
There's an article floating around on reported success changing the channel - I'll post the link if I find it.
Edit: Found article, channel change, and google vs market version(s) also come into play, as well as screen lock timing.

Have any luck getting it working better?

Makes me wonder if the heat from charging, combined with the heat from running the two radios was just too much and the phone shut down the 3g as a precaution?
Maybe because the only time I've had luck charging and tethering was when I left my phone in aa window while it was ten degrees out but it stilled crapped out.

Rofl, I switched to the super Z Rom, I'm bipolar when it comes to ROMs xD.
You know the stock tethering app (one that comes on factory DIncs), he managed to get it to work without paying (or someone did lol) o_0
Anyway, Same problem -.-
That kernel says for AOSP, so it won't work on Sense roms? :/
I guess... Also the way to get the stock tethering free is just dialing a number and changing some settings.

Locked
In my experience, the phone basically freezes while being charged. Whatever the CPU load is just by plugging the thing in, it probably doesn't afford enough CPU cycles for something as timing critical as the wifi operation you are gunning for.

[Q] [ask] internet sharing via usb cable

I don't know if i'm correct or not for making a new thread. I have searched through forum and google but still couldnt find the answer.
I'd like to use my 3g connection to be shared to my laptop. All i know is there is only a single way to do that via wifi tether. But it's making me crazy with the overheat.
I got 51 degree celcius as i see in my battery widget. And for me,its's like i could frying an egg using my defy. Im affraid im gonna break my device if i continue using wifi tether more than 10minutes
I use custom rom from jboogie. And i think it was not from the rom.
So is there any way or step i could do to share 3g using usb cable to avoid overheat problem?
Thanks anyway
Here you go: AziLink USB Tether
thanks i'll try
You may also want to try this procedure as it seems not to use any additional software...

[Q] Slow LTE Tether - Wired & Wireless

I've run Wifi Tether, EasyTether Pro, and ClockworkMod Tether. All give me tethered speeds <= 1Mbps up and down.
This is a Galaxy Nexus LTE with unlocked bootloader and Root. Stock otherwise and no radio update.
Running on OSX 7.2.
I can run the speed test from the same location and get 25Mbps+ while running the test from my phone.
I can do this while running any of the tethering apps as well and I'll still get blazing speeds on my phone, but terrible on my computer.
It's definitely not a USB problem as the computer is USB 2.0 and there are no other devices plugged in.
It's also not a general computer issue as I've tested on other machines, both Mac and Windows.
Anyone have any ideas on how to hunt down the problem?
Looking for any suggestions at all...
I've only run Speed test once while tethering, but my speed was 1Mbps just like you. I should mention that I have a stock SGN and that I have the hotspots option in my plan. My download speed just a minute later using only the phone was 15Mbps.
I wonder if there is some internal throttle in ICS or Verizon's version of it.

I do wired tethering via PDANet and average 3 - 5mbps with this phone. It was about the same before & after root. I think it could also be tied in to the radio(reception issues). With past 4G phones I had both better reception and much faster data speeds. I'd say we're probably going to have to sit tight and hope that Verizon releases a fix soon.
It may be related to the stock ROM. I'm running CM9 and get a cap of around 12mbps on wifi tether. Never tested on USB, but I have to assume the cap is due to Wi-Fi limitations.
When tethering via USB, your tether speeds will be limited to the same speed as the slowest USB device connected to your PC at the time. That means unplug all other USB peripherals (where possible) or upgrade them to faster models if you want improve your tether speeds. Koush posted this in his notes somewhere (either in the app description itself on the market, or on his Google+ page) - I remember reading his full disclosure about this issue.
TL;DR version = unplug all USB devices and see if your tether speeds increases. If so, plug them back in, one at a time, until your speeds slow, which can help you determine which device is the culprit. Replace said device with a faster model, or don't use it when tethering.
Edit: I found it! Here's my source for the Tether being limited by your slowest USB device. The quote is here: "Tether speeds slow?
Your USB speed is limited to the speed of the *slowest* peripheral you have connected. It is recommended you unplug any unnecessary/slow USB peripherals to get maximum Tether speeds." That quote is taken right from the app description itself, which can be found alongside the app here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

I don't think it's a radio issue. My data speeds to the phone are REALLY high. The only time I have a problem is when the data passes on to the computer. The speed I see on my phone is never an issue regardless of how the phone is configured (to tether). The speed issue is only on the computer side. It's also not a computer issue as I've stated above.
Last I heard, VZW is planning to "fix" signal issues by making the signal icon report a higher value than what it's getting. The DB reading won't change, so they're not lying but they're not telling an honest story either. Surprise!

I have not tried a custom ROM yet. That is next in my plan.

Not an issue with my computer. Please refer to the original post.

To clarify my response in this post, I'm not attacking anyone's response. I'm only trying to narrow everything down for anyone who may stumble upon this in the future.
Thanks for the input everyone!
I did a backup and wipe. Installed tether and ran before a restore. Same problems...
I will try a different ROM and get back to you all.
I usually get 20 mb/s down on 4bars of LTE, when tethering with wifi tether beta 3 Located Here and i got 6mb/s tethering to an iphone 4s and 2 ipod touches
I agree I have no problems pulling over 25Mbps using the WiFi Tether app that was linked above. I will say that I would recommend going to the site and go under downloads and use the 3.1 pre113 (experimental version). I have found this to be the most stable for me with the best connectivity.

Understood.
My issue is not with the tethering software though... something deeper within the system configuration is awry.
I loaded the 'AOKP - Team Kang -Build 15' ROM and tethering is blazing. I guess I'll just bounce around on ROMs until I find the cleanest build that is close to stock.
I considered loading stock and wiping out everything, but I don't want to lose what's on /sdcard/ .
From what I understand, loading the stock ROM will completely wipe.
If anyone knows a way around this, please let me know.

When you are flashing different roms you should always wipe data and cache to avoid any issues. I am using the stock rom and then I rooted with CF-Root through fastboot and have no issue with WiFi Tether. I stock with the 113 experimental as it seems to work the best for me on this set up. I would just copy you sd content and the paste it back over once flashed back to factory.
Right. I was trying to avoid copying the SD content again. I have quite a bit of data... :-/
I switched back over to my stock backup because the custom ROMs I tried all crash when I restore from Titanium. Seems as though they all won't run unless you keep the gapps that the dev includes in the ROM.
After some more consideration, it seems as though my tether is pulling data from the 3G side while the rest of the phone runs happily on 4G.
Any ideas?

More info about my problem at the above thread.
Still struggling with this issue...
I have upgraded to 4.0.4 and I noticed speed improvements that lasted the period of the previous weekend. No clue why...
Some other details that might be helpful:
Android-Wifi-Tether is slower than the stock tether with both upload and download speeds slow.
Have tried third party ROMS and experience the same issue. (Slow download, fast upload)
EasyTether Pro now works as you'd expect 4G tether to! Speeds as fast as everything else that runs from my phone.
ClockworkMod Tether is slow like Android-Wifi-Tether. Up and Down speeds < 1M
One server in Columbia, SC on speedtest.net reports speeds > 6M down and 2M up.
Does anyone have any clues as to the difference in the way these two programs operate?
I'm on a Mac and when I first connect I get an error that there is no internet available. I have to turn wifi off and back on from the computer. I leave the phone alone for this.
I've run speed tests on Windows machines with same results
I know someone with a Mifi hotspot that has the same issues I've been describing here. Even with the Columbia, SC server on speedtest.net
Verizon has yet to make contact with him.
Any ideas?
