I tried the latest Wireless tether app, it was a dud, not biggie
So then I tried the other stable version (2.06?) and it works.... For about 5-10 minutes. The app gives no errors, the phone gets no errors, the 3G icon doesn't go to 1x, or disappear, or anything like that. it is just... Not sure how exactly to describe it. It just. Doesn't. Work. Its almost like my connection is cut off without knowing.
Cyanogenmod7 has a portable wi-fi hotspot feature unlocked. It sort of works. Then I try downloading a simple 20mb file. It will work up for around 8MB, maybe 15. Then, on the phone, the 3G icon turns white?? I guess that's a warning for the thing that happens next... Ok, so it turns white, then the bars turn white, then, omg, the f-ing 3G icon disappears!
Wtf???!?!!!? Does it go to 1x? Nope. It literally flashes from 3G, to nothing, then says 3G again, then nothing (while staying white) and it will do this until I disconnect from my laptop.
What the f is the meaning of this?? Has Verizon found some way to sniff in on what we're doing and somehow figured out that I'm tethering and cuts off my data until I stop my behavior?
I would also like to point out, I have barely downloaded 2GB of data so far for this month. So, I think that's about average for most people.

Have you tried the new Kernel?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905873
I can actually fix this... Maybe... my friend noticed something SUPER useful... when you wifi tether don't plug the phone into a charger... I used to get the 3g just all together disappearing and wireless tether crapping out all the time then I started tether with out it plugged in and now I tether for hours no problem what so ever.

Hours? On a stock battery? Cool if you can but I know I can't...at least not for hour(s). Maybe for an hour or so lol.
Personally I would try and download a different wireless tether app from the market. I had an issue where I would make a connection, it would work for a minute or two and then just drop for no reason, even though both pc and phone said they were still connected. Uninstalled and then downloaded a later version and its been fine ever since.
Change Channel?
Have you tried changing the channel on the tethering app?
Open Wireless Tether App>Menu>Settings>Change Channel.
There's an article floating around on reported success changing the channel - I'll post the link if I find it.
Edit: Found article, channel change, and google vs market version(s) also come into play, as well as screen lock timing.

Makes me wonder if the heat from charging, combined with the heat from running the two radios was just too much and the phone shut down the 3g as a precaution?
Maybe because the only time I've had luck charging and tethering was when I left my phone in aa window while it was ten degrees out but it stilled crapped out.

Rofl, I switched to the super Z Rom, I'm bipolar when it comes to ROMs xD.
You know the stock tethering app (one that comes on factory DIncs), he managed to get it to work without paying (or someone did lol) o_0
Anyway, Same problem -.-
That kernel says for AOSP, so it won't work on Sense roms? :/
I guess... Also the way to get the stock tethering free is just dialing a number and changing some settings.

In my experience, the phone basically freezes while being charged. Whatever the CPU load is just by plugging the thing in, it probably doesn't afford enough CPU cycles for something as timing critical as the wifi operation you are gunning for.

Saw this on the "wireless tether" homepage, so i just copied and pasted it as it explains my problem as good is i could. I have tried different kernals, ive tried wiping.. unrooting rerooting etc... and it happens on all tether apps including the stock one. It starts happening after it gets over 35 degrees Celsius. :/
Currently using MIUI rom, however does it on all of them including stock unrooted one.
Anyone know how to fix? Its quiet annoying! :/
Which device (manufacturer, type)?
HTC Incredible
Which firmware is installed?
2.2
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.turn on
2.connects
3.works for about 5 minutes
What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Works really good for the first 5-10 minutes then stops and 3G symbol will disappear and reappear along with 3G service
I remember seeing the same issue, but I don't recall seeing it since flashing skyraider vanilla.
The last ROM I used was virtuous.
I don't use tether very often, but I can pay attention to the 3g and temps when I do.
Do you see interruption in your connection on the connected device(s)?

It usually only takes 20-30 mb download to heat it up to the point it starting flickering on and off. But no, it doesn't interrupt if its wired tether, only wireless...
veeeerry annoying as I like to have it for college.
what verison of Wireless Tether are you using. I know that I had the same problem for two reasons, 1. there are at least two verisons that I know of that have a problem. I had the same trouble. 2. You might have a the 3G Drop problem.
I've had this happen in MIUI 0.11.26 as well as CM 6.0.2 on my AMOLED Inc.
For me its not a temp problem but rather a heavy data traffic problem. It only seems to do it when I'm intensely viewing multiple webpages with flash or videos.
Only fix for me is reboot.

It's becoming rather annoying that the 4G signal constantly goes to sleep once the screen is off. I was on my friend's Galaxy S 4g on T-mobile and his managed to stay on constantly (it's actually the default connection and you won't even see that 3G connects). Once the screen on Epic turns off, the 4g signal goes on sleep, making me lose any type of internet connection...
I've tried this way: http://www.groovypost.com/howto/mobile/prevent-phone-4g-wireless-connection-sleeping/ but has proven to do nothing to help with the situation. Anyone know how to prevent it from sleeping??
Unless you're tethering why wouldn't you want it to sleep?
T-mobile's 4g is 3g turned up to the max. Sprints 4g acts like wifi.

Mainly because i want to be loading my webpages at 4g all the time, turning it on and off is just annoying and slow, since battery isn't an issue for me I want to take advantage of the speed game
Uh, 4G icon's Zzzz means that it's idle. Just like when the 3G icon says D instead of showing arrows.

You aren't losing a connection. It just means you don't have any data activity. Same goes for 3G. If it *isn't* displaying the idle icon, you're transferring data. If it is, then data has been idle for a few seconds, and the radio goes to low power to avoid burning through your battery. It's not sleeping though. Also, you're probably relying too much on the icon - it's slow to refresh, and often doesn't correlate to an immediate data connection. So, just leave it be. Nothing's happening to your data connection, data's going to and from your device as it should be. (Your laptop's WiFi, and also the Epic's, do the exact same thing.)
You are loosing a connection when this happens. I've been looking for a fix for this for a long time. Unfortunately I think that the sprint side is at fault. I use my phone to hook my desktop to the internet and see this going on all the time. Perhaps some kind of app that pings the server every 3 minutes might help.
My work around for this is to set the display to not turn off when connected via usb in development settings.

Perhaps there's an issue with your ROM? I tether *constantly* when I travel, over 4G. When I'm just sitting there doing nothing, it switches to idle. I've *never* lost a transfer, a session of any kind, or anything otherwise, and I generally stay tethered for hours on end. Are you positive?
Sorry but i never lose a 4G connection if i'm transferring data EVEN when the screen is off.
For example, i use Tune In to stream BBC London 94.9 all the time and i turn off the screen, and the stream goes on just fine.

I think the phone let's certain apps hold a connection open while in standby while others don't. For example pdanet keeps it open but downloading install files for games like dungeon defenders the phone lets the signal sleep. Anywho the above works.

I've done that already- doesn't work.
How do I know there's no connection? It's simple- open up gTalk on 3G (even when it's on D) and have someone IM you, it'll go through (almost instantly). Now repeat with 4G, turn the screen off and wait a few seconds or just know that it's on zZZ. Have someone IM you, it wouldn't go through until you establish an internet connection (hit refresh in your gmail app to revive it or go browse the internet), only then will the IM go through.
So all in all, it proves that there isn't an internet connection when it goes to zZZ
Yea 4g works like wifi hence the sleep. Somethings wrong with your phone or rom I've done the above on.both my epics on multiple roms and its always worked. Also I hope you know its going to shut off regardless. It only stays on it there's an app actually downloading something. I dont know of a way to keep 4g permanently on. This will only prevent the sleep when the screen.is shut off. Without it 4g sleeps no.matter what your doing. Sounds like your just going to have to.deal with it until someone with enough need comes up with something.

well I'm using the sprint stock rom....sigh* this sucks
I can only conclude that leaving the screen on is the only way to keep the 4G connection stable- which sucks a lot since the display sucks up more battery than the 4G radio does!
If anyone comes up with a solution or anything (maybe flashing a different rom would help- if it does, please recommend some) please let me know! Thanks a bundle!
I am having the same problem as in the OP, except on my EF02 deodexed ROM when it comes out of sleep it doesn't re-establish the connection.. Anyone have any suggestions?
[email protected]
Edit: I forgot to mention that I have reflashed through odin, and cwm to no avail. I also have tried EC05, EE02, EF02, and EF10 modems. It seems to be doing it on all of them.
I'm fairly certain it stays connected, it's just not active.
The TuneIn example is great, that's an app I use frequently. I also use Pandora and Slacker and they also continue to transmit data even with the screen turned off. If I get an email I get notified, if I get a facebook message I receive notification, if I receive a video call request it notifies me.
It has been the same for me both on the stock Epic and now on SRF 1.2, there is no reason you should be losing the connection if it is stable prior to the screen shutting off, IMO.
Maybe there is something more going on here. The only times I have ever had problems with my 4G connection is when I had certain apps installed, they tended to disrupt the data. Try uninstalling a few data intensive apps and see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually created a new thread because I believe my issue is different than this OP. It's under EF02 4g issues or something. (can't remember right now) But it is specifically when the screen turn off. I just went in and kept the screen on while plugged in and it was fine. For some reason after the screen turns off and I turn it on a minute or so later, than even though 4g shows active it won't transfer data. The only apps I have that might be data intensive is email, or possibly SNS pulling FB data.
I've had issues with this also, as I stream movies off the net on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 while tethered wirelessly to my Epic. Once the screen is off and you leave it be data will go through for about 2-3 minutes then stop until I wake the phone up and turn on the display. It's annoying while watching movies and every 2 minutes it stops because the data connection on the phone stops.

Are you at least rooted? All my settings took effect instantly without rebooting. I maxed out the dB and idle time.
I don't really know to describe this problem better. I'm running CM10 (lately AOKP's latest build) with default kernels. I've flashed all the radios and tried a bunch of them in solid LTE coverage, I seem to have the same problem every time, which is the data seems to "stall."
It will show full signal, and then if i click a link, it will sort of just sit there, not really doing anything. Eventually it may load, or i give up in patience. Any one have any ideas?

I am using at&t stock rom and not yet rooted. Even I have the same problem. Tried to disable and enable data from the notification but did not help. But, when I turn on the wifi, and turn off the wifi again, it works fine. When wifi is turned on phone disables the data and try's to connect to wifi or shows the available networks, but I don't connect and I turn off the wifi, phone reconnects to the at&t data again and then it works fine. Not sure why.

May be a good time to contact your cell phone provider for a replacement.
I was on a cross country road trip running CM9 on my GS3 and I kept running into the same thing. A temporary fix was to reboot the phone. Since I got back, I flashed SlimBean and I haven't seen the issue again.
In my case, I think its the SIM card. I used Google Maps/Navagation on my HTC G2 (using a micro SIM adapter) and my phone got HOT, I mean burn your fingers hot (upwards of 57 degC to 60 degC).
If it happens again I'm going to bring my SIM card back to ATT and have them replace it. I did some googleing and it seems like this is common with the Verizon variants of the GS3.

ive had this same problem and it would piss me off! i found out that busybox was the culprit. i uninstalled busybox and cleard my cache in recovery and all was well once again. if any of yall have busybox installed you may look into my solution.
I recently been having this issue also. But mine is a little bit different. Like my phone will say I am connected to "H" for data but when I load a Page it slightly lags switches to H+ and boom Internet works. When I stall for more then 5 minutes it switches back. I'm not sure if it's some battery conserving feature or what but I have no problem against at.

Good afternoon XDA HOX owners,
I'm having a really strange problem with getting on to my wifi AT HOME ONLY.
The phone sees the wifi, registers the strength of the signal, but loses connection all the time. it's the first time I've had this issue with a gadget, and this is the 4th smart phone that's been owned in my household, while using this particular wireless router. there's also 2 laptops, a NAS and an iPad (EEWwwww ) ... and my mates that have my wifi password get on without an issue...
If I turn the wifi on the phone off and on, it works for maybe ten seconds to a minute, and then drops connectivity, but not the signal. I know this because of the little 'up and down' connectivity arrows that run in the CM10 wifi indicator. they go either up, or down or nothing, but the signal is still there.
Any help would be massively appreciated as it's ruining my love for the awesome device the HOX is, especially running CM10.
Thanks :good:

I'm having similar issues with my Wi-fi at home, tho my connection lasts longer, sometimes 10 mins, sometimes 5 hours+ sometimes all day. The strange part is that when i use wi-fi on the phone alot like some sort of heavy stuff youtube, downloading etc. then my connection drops. I've tried using only N connection and BGN Mixed on 20 and 40HZ channel and N seams to give me the best results, never tried B and G connections since i think those reduce the range of your WI-FI , too bad i didn't go for A B G N router. Anyway could be up to my router or something, every device that uses my WI-FI has same issues with this router. I even took it to the repair center they've done some ping tests and showen me that router works perfect. anyway back home still does those buggy things. If anyone has any good idea please feel free to suggest us.
I'm also having an issue with mine, although slightly different.
My phone connects to available wireless with no problem and stays connected however when I leave that location it stays connected instead of switching back to mobile data. I have to turn off wireless and then turn it back on to get it to switch to mobile data.
Kinda a pain in the arse and really annoying. I've missed allot of important emails since I got this phone due to me forgetting to turn wifi off everytime I leave somewhere with wifi.
None of my previous smart phones had this issue. I'm hoping that if I get custom rom on it, it will work properly,
I've got a two part question for some issues I'd like to address while on 4G (some I've called Sprint about, others I know you guys will have the answer since I'm rooted) that I hope to resolve.
My issues with Sprint is that if I'm on 3G and looking at images via websites, pics obviously load slower, but they're always nice and crisp. I notice that when I happen to be on 4G and go look at images, suddenly they load super grainy. I spoke to someone else who is also on Sprint w/ an LTE 4G phone (not a Note II, something else) who experiences the exact same problem. I've called Sprint about it, but I get the usual run around saying they're addressing the issues, fixing towers, etc. When I first started getting 4G in my area about 3 months ago, it was BLAZING fast, connected the second I came off the freeway and stayed on strong. I realize over time that I'm sharing the same signal with others, but damn.
My issues that I'm hoping you guys can assist with is in regards to the phone staying connected to to 4G more via changing thresholds. As I id before, it was awesome. Now it's gotten to the point where I or the phone have to be near a window, or occasionally I can leave it on the top edge of my couch...but if I happen to handle the phone to answer a text messages, it'll often drop back into 3G. The problem is that I use my phone tethered to my laptop for watching TV....Top Gear, Family Guy, etc that I stream. On 4G it's great, but once it drops to 3G it turns into a buffering nightmare and some shows/sites can't handle jumping around for time frames, so lets say if I'm 15 min into a show, go into 3G and come back into 4G, the show never recovers and I've got no choice but to restart the show. I'm just curious if there's a way to change at what point/signal strength that the phone wants to swap back and forth and basically ask it to stay on 4G more often than not when I'm at home where I actually get 4G.
As for tethering, I'm a stock rooted ROM using TrevEMod tethering because the stock tethering app won't stay turned on, I'm assuming due to using the stock ROM. What I'm curious about is a way to have the phone automated in that once I plug it on, the tethering app turns itself on and then back off again once unplugged from a power cord. At one point I'd used some app where it had me enter parameters to do this, but it only worked to turn on the stock tethering app which won't work.
Bottom line is I'd like my phone to stay connected to 4G more often than not, turn on tethering when plugged in and turn it off when not.
as for the tethering, if you are running the stock deodexed rom, there is a mod you can flash to make the native hotspot work then you will be able to use Tasker or however you automate it turning on. if you are running stock odexed you could always flash stock deodexed, if you were intent enough on making it work.
here is the hotspot mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232553
I truly don't know if the stock ROM is odexed or deodexed, I just did a simple rooting procedure and nothing more so I could install a tethering app. Maybe I'm just being naive, but coming from my Epic days where I rooted, ROM'd, kernal'd, OC'd, etc days where I removed tons of apps, added others, etc I never was able to get battery stats/calibration to work correctly, which in turn wrecked havoc on that phone...phone would get super laggy, bog and stumble, then I'd reset the phone and I'd go from 20% battery life to 3%, then realize why the phone was freaking out. Now that I've got this Note II, it works great, I've never felt the need to OC or anything (I wouldn't mind removing stock apps but the SDX Stock App Removal Tool doesn't work), so I'm kinda hesitant in flashing any sort of ROM for fear of reliving past experiences...right now the phone simply works great, I'd just like a few simple features. Any input to sway my decision?
i hear ya, i too like a nice stable setup with everything working. your system is probably odexed if al you did was root, but if you have a file explorer app, when you go into /system/app, you will see each .apk also has an associated .odex file. the deodexed rom has the odex part added back into the apk, but otherwise is exactly the same, no tweaks or anything, every bit as stable, and with nothing removed, but it is easier to make mods for a deodexed rom, such as the hotspot mod!
the decision is yours. it is always a bit of work to flash a rom, but this is defintiely a way to keep the stabilty and reliability, and have the hotspot working the way you want it to! the rom is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241930, if you choose to go this route. this is exactly my setup, with the hotspot mod, and it runs great.
I'll read the thread, thanks for the link. Any suggestions for something that will enable the tethering app automatically based on being plugged in, and I've had no luck finding anything in regards to people changing thresholds for the 4G connectivity.

no problem. the app Tasker from the market does things like that, i think it costs a few bucks but it's well worth it. and perhaps there are others.
for the 4G thing, i don't see any setting for that. there are other people who know a lot more about network stuff than i do. there might be a dialer code menu where you can set to receive LTE only, but sorry i can't be of more help there. good luck and have fun!
