[Q] Rooting the device without affecting the "binary counter"? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it already possible to root the device without affecting the "binary counter"(yellow triangle)?
Please paste links to the currently best rooting-method(s).

At present available method (flashing recovery) will raise counter. Newer device s3,note 2 etc not allowing test signed files from stock recovery, so I don't think without raising counter it will be possible to root.

The S2 Galaxy had the same problem with rooting but someone came up with a way of gaining temp root and then
flashing a root kernel which bypassed the counter, as this device is so new it might take a little time to work out
the correct method.

When stock rom available, CF will add support for note 2 for triangle away too, he is already working for this. Hope will get it soon.

That's phillz, phillz kernel can be flashed through stock recovery in note and s2, but at least in current situation it won't happen with s3 or note 2, samsung not allowing test sign file flashing.

I have decided to hold back on root at the moment due to the flash counter and OTA break issue.
Its killing me though to have to live with such high lcd density atm
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
i'm holding off as well...
waiting to see what sort of custom roms appear in the coming weeks before i decide what to do with it...
aside from Titanium Backup, i don't really use a lot of root packages... changing the DPI would be nice, but i can live with it for the moment until the devs get coding
M
I'm holding off for now too, I really like having this phone stock at the moment but if Google wallet comes out for root then I will.
One idea if you afraid from raising flash counter.
Flash pre rooted rom
Use mobile odin to flash stock rom.
This won't raise flash counter.

Warranty will be voids.
Though soon triangle away application will get support for note2, then it can be reset.
Edit
Just looked your sign
PS : any special reason for asking? As you have already used sgs3,note and difficult to believe you don't know it.

You need to choose what you want:
1. Have root and forget about OTA`s and Kies and use CWM and PC/Mobile Odin or
2. Stay on stock firmware and forget about root all together.
You can`t have it both ways mate
You will never be able to install OTA`s if you are rooted as you have a custom recovery.
ok still some what a new bee im looking to get note 2 unlock and run it on att..i have a gs3 on att..
i like rooting to get rid of my crap ware on att..but unlock is nice pure TW and i like it..so if i root and theres a update do i just flash the new update ? coming from a rooted stock TW?

ROOT!
Then u can clean bloatware, like gmaps, g+, ChatOn etc.
Hi Ketan, i have a question for you, i want to install the rooted rom but before doing that i would want to take the nandroid backup of the stock rom. Can you please give me step by step guide as to how i should go ahead wih it . Thanks and await your reply.

Galaxy Note 2 - info root etc.

Hello everyone, this week will buy the galaxy note 2 and I have some questions
It 'a good phone in terms of modding? I did on my galaxy y flasharci above all else, and even after the brick are always managed to reflash with odin everything, even when it seemed hard bricked, you can say the same notes 2?
My main interest are the root permissions, nothing cooked rom, no kernel, looks like a phone quite fluid and powerful, there is some risk in getting root permissions? methods are simple and not risky? I had the Asus TF300 and it was a very bad experience, bootloader locked, impossible to recover the guarantee after modding, plus the APA to unlock the bootloader was sought in connection to send the asus serial number and then remove the guarantee for good, in short, a mess in terms of modding, not to speak of having flashed cwm of the app by google play that I was definitely brickato all (no adb, no fastboot, no apx, I had to send in care)
So I think you all understand that I need some reassurance, the phone costs a lot and I would not make a bad deal.
Is there something similar to that nvflash face become your phone with the appropriate steps Brickproof (inbrickabile)?
Thanks in advance, see you soon
No. There is a very little chance of a hard brick.
Just make sure you update to dll7 or newer rom.

To regain warranty-
1) factory reset (to remove any apps that require root)
2) flash stock rom (to reflash stock recovery and kernel and undo any modifications done by rooting )
3) root (to use triangle away)
4) triangle away (to reset counter)
5) flash stock rom (to unroot)
6) delete triangle away and supersu if it is there.

I like to comment some modification
1. Later
2 . just flash stock kernel /recovery if custom kernel/refovery is there otherwise skip
3.no need, still rooted
4.yes triangle away
5.yes stock rom flash
6.wipe
This will be more clean and won't have any recursive of root/previous rom. As well bypass some steps

Sorry if you misunderstood me, i never said it was wrong.
Procedure is same like you said, i have just modify sequence so
it will cut off 3 steps
-1 time flashing stock ROM instead of two (1 time just flashing stock recovery/kernel, and that also if needed)
-No need to reroot
-No need to delete SuperSu and triangle away
So this will take 10 min less than steps you have said, as well it won't have any leftover b'coz wiping at last.
Isn't ?

[Q] root: I'm lost, so many steps and threads. Please help

Hey everyone,
I would like to know what is the simplest way to root my N7100.
Here I've made all possible automatic updates and my fw is 4.1.2 N7100XXDLK7.
My purpose is to have root access so I could run applications like Titanium Backup, restore some applications settings (like Angry Birds scores, yes ) etc.
Do I really need to flash another fw on it with ODIN?
Thanks and best regards
Since your new & lost, download this pre-rooted FW

Flash with Odin

Hi, what does it mean ? Is it for warranty or ?
It would be covered under warranty untill u dont flash any zips which will raise the binary counter to claim warranty you could unroot ur device factory reset no signs of root and you can claim it.

yes,
actually if you root any latest ROM with conventional method (CF auto root/CWM) that will raise flash counter and voids warranty untill you reset flash counter. for newbies or who scare to root or finding hard to root and reset counter, i have made pre rooted ROM, which is nothing but same samsung stock ROM + root file pushed in ROM so you will need not to root and hence no need to reset counter.

[Q] Does installing a custom recovery root your phone or not? Note 2 t0lte CM

Just had a quick question. Since i'm new and a first time rooter, i'm following the instructions on how to install CM on my Note II LTE i317M from the CM wiki site. I'm wondering if the first set of instructions "Installing a custom recovery on Galaxy Note 2 LTE" requires root access or if it gives me root access. The instructions involve clockworkmod recovery and the Heimdall Suite. If it gives root access then cool, i'll be on my way but if it doesn't and it requires root, which rooting method is suggested? I've seen mrRobinson's injected factory root image and also chainfire's method. Help please, i really appreciate the guidance! Thanks in advance!
Edit: And does the t0lte on CM's wiki include my i317M Note 2? As there is no Rogers i317M option to click so i'm assuming "Note 2 LTE t0lte" includes my phone.
No, you must root first then install recovery.
I would recommend watching some videos on YouTube and reading some more.
Recovery is not root...rather a stepping stone to allow it...
A custom recovery will allow the installation and modification of your OS...but root includes files being placed onto the device giving you full administrator rights...
Continued research will provide you the answers you seek...and won't bore you to tears like I will...LOL
Welcome ...and I do suggest that you fully read the first few posts of the CF auto root thread ...as it is the process you will likely use ...

Like ^^^^ said. You don't need root access to flash a recovery or a rom. Root assess is for working within your operating system (the flashed and installed rom), for tasks like modifying protected files and running certain apps that need to modify the system files.
i just got 2 answers, one person said yes i have to root and another said i dont have to root... confusing...
You need to root your device in order to flash Custom Recovery. With Custom Recovery installed you can now flash Custom ROMs, take nandroid backups, restore from backups etc.

[root] samsung galaxy s3/s4 (qualcomm)

I have heavily modified the MotoChopper exploit by XDA member drjbliss to handle the new changes to file permissions in JellyBean 4.3+. Because this tool is based on MotoChopper it will likely support the same device list that MotoChopper supports however i have only tested it on the T-mobile T999 & T999L and the i337 .
If you would like to test it on other devices it should be fairly safe to try as it should either work or fail, of course testing anything like this is always at your own risk and i am not liable for any damage to your device, self esteem and so on. If you do test it on your device, please report your results here so that I can try to fine tune it if need be.
For this current version you will have to have TWRP installed on your device.
if it works for you don't forget to hit the thanks button! enjoy.
all instructions on how to use are inside the tool. this is for windows users only.

So sorry I need to edit the main post, I have been working on so many different projects, we did not test it on the M919 it was actually tested on the i337. If you are talking about the flash counter though this will not trip the flash counter, however flashing twrp will trip the binary status, and possibly the Knox counter, I need someone to test it, but I can't tell you how to correct it if it does trip it.
i guess what i should say is that while i have not had a confirmed success of fail on the m919 i have provided the tool to a few who have not been kind enough to report its status

No it will not erase the data on your phone.
The step by step instructions are inside the tool, if you need instructions on how to flash TWRP to your device via Odin you can find them in the forums. I would include them but it is really outside of the scope of the tool, while the tool requires TWRP to work TWRP is not related in any way to the tool, the tool is simply TWRP dependent.
It has worked on the i337 already, whether or not it works on mk2 has yet to be determined, however the tool is designed in such a way it will either work or fail, if it fails it will not harm your device.
