[REQUEST] buildbox donation thread [info inside] - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

This is the official buildbox support thread. Many of you are probably wondering what a buildbox is... I will try to explain without getting too far sidetracked!
---Purpose---We are trying to raise money in support of multiple roms/devs. This is not for one particular dev, nor is it one particular rom. Consider this a donation to the community in which you are a part of. This is helping the devs have more resources at their disposal, and ultimately, helping you have a better rom! Please read below for more of an explanation.
---What is buildbox?---For the open source community (CM10, Paranoid Android, CNA, etc), the roms are built from source. Doing this is not very easy, nor is it quick! It takes a lot of time and effort. I don't want to simply 'thank' the devs and leave it at that. So, I have made a contribution to the open source community. I have commited a powerful server to the devs that choose to use it for building open source roms.
Now you say, "So what... they could use their own computer and build roms..."
Yes, they could. However, look at this. For many devs (especially since ICS and above), the build times have increased significantly!! I'm talking 4+ hours in some cases! In steps the buildbox. The buildbox (in it's current condition) has cut most build times to between 20 and 30 mins.
Then you ask, "Why does that matter to me?" Well, the quicker the rom is done, the quicker we discover bugs, and, in turn, can FIX bugs! Think about it: If you were waiting in the lobby at the car dealership for some work to be done and it was going to take 3 hours to complete the work, you wait. You aren't getting anything done. Now, if you were able to speed the process up to 25 min, you could get much more done that day because you aren't stuck for over 3 hours!
---Why does this matter to you?---Maybe more choices of roms, maybe nightlies of your favorite roms, maybe less bugs! A small donation toward our goal will help keep the hardware current and allow for the devs to get the great benefit of a powerful machine. Hard drive space is quickly filling up, the RAM is over full utilization, and other hardware improvements can be made.
-=Current goal=-
buildbox project (must have flash).PayPal here:
Any donations and/or support are greatly appreciated.
Currently supported devs (a big thanks goes out to them and their work!): Phantomphreak53 (CM10 nightlies), kbizzle (Paranoid Android SG3 and SG2), and justlovejoy (CNA). These devs have great talents and more work to come. Support the project for them and for your own benefit.
PS: If anyone is looking for more info, has suggestions, or is interested in the project, feel free to pm me. All of the devs can vouch for me (even a couple not listed here). This is a legitimate request. We are counting on the open source community to keep this project going strong.
tl;dr, support open source development and make a donation to the development tools!

I use to donate to Developers, because they spend time developing instead studying, hanging with friends or family etc.
But to be honest, and judging about other threads by you. This sounds more like: "i want a new computer" than "lets help the community".
I hope to be wrong.

Yeah I'll donate when devs step forward using it. And there is a particular piece of hardware you can mention.. ..also couldn't were just use our if it doesn't exist try to start a opencl/direct compute gcc and so on? Hell air crack NG allows for networked opencl of 32 devices 1 high end graphics card is equal to more then 10 high end cpus

Ok, basketthis first and foremost isn't trying to get a new computer. I personally use his box to build roms for two devices currently. If he hadn't provided the machine to turn my 4 hour build times into 30 min, I would be left standing with my d*ck in my hand, just trying to work with one device in a timely manner. A donation is simply that. So all I ask is that you don't come in here and bash him for just trying to give back to the community in his own way. It's his bandwidth and electronics we are using and over time, they will need to be paid for and upgraded. If you don't know the Devs or use their roms, that's fine but don't throw accusations around to try and deface a member of this great community.

The more understanding, the better. This tool is out there for the devs and we want to make it better so more devs can get involved. Who knows, it may be a dev that ends up developing for your next phone... The possibilities are endless with community involvement.

Received a donation. I've committed to match anyone else's donation up to 50 dollars. Would like to see this project continue. I will do everything I can to help. Can't wait to get my hands dirty on some upgrades for these devs! They deserve it!

Got the chipin/PayPal sites working together. The chipin site now reflects donation status.

Bump.
This guy is already hosting a build box for Kbizzle, which has made it easier to build his ROMs. I personally think this is well worth a donation, even if it's just $1...
Next time you donate to your favorite developer, send this guy a small donation to help keep the build boxes up and running.

Ya know... 8 months ago I was just a user that made a ROM, I still consider myself the same, and those that have been around me for a time know I have ALWAYS only considered myself that. That mentality is what has always kept my patience, passion, and the fun I have making things. I have always learned, looked up to and showed nothing but respect to the Devs, I promote and retweet their ROMs, always talk highly, and have always been impressed with the cool stuff they have done. Up until today, I thought the respect I have always showed was something I have received... but that is NOT the case. I have always thought the comradery in the community was a awesome thing, the more and more have have been part of it, I have realized that was not always the case, but still a great thing none the less. Not until now did I realize there is nothing but snakes in the grass ready to strike. Devs I have spoke with on numerous occasions, asked questions to and answered questions for are NOT collegues nor E Friends and too be honest, I am quite surprised that I was completely unaware of the intentions.
Now with all that said, I have NEVER Claimed my build to be pure AOSP, Full CM9, or VZW Leak Based. I compile some AOSP, Use soem of the cool stuff CM has brought to us, and use system apps from the leak because they work. I NEVER gave the impression my ROM was anything it wasn't.. As my Thread Title has always said "[ROM] AXI0M". That is all it was... Simply a ROM. I ALWAYS gave credit to the big boys that made cool stuff or patched things that I have used. I always made my own edits, my own tweaks and I have always been proud of what came out the other end, and judging by the people that run the ROMS, I have reason to be proud. The reason for all the hours, and the time is simple... I did not do for donations, i did not do it for popularity, and I did not do it as a job. I have fun learning and using what is finished. Unlike MANY.. I NEVER asked for donations, when I did receive them I ALWAYS responded with a email showing my appreciation. Hell, I have refunded some that were just TOO large. It was NEVER about that. And further more... I only paid for the hosting with any donations I have received. I don't campaign for people to buy me a phone, I buy my own. It is MY Hobby, My Fun, and My Phone. I am 35 years old, I built my business from nothing over 15 years ago and I am still a well respected builder and I am there everyday with my guys working. I am not some pompous jackass sitting behind his computer trolling others, checking my PayPal in the next browser tab.
This is (What I thought) was a community of Open Source, something we all get together and work on where Users turn into to Dev and Themers and something cool gets produced. Instead, it is politics, post count, popularity, and donation tallies. People calling other people thieves for using OPEN SOURCE, Fixes, and Mods others have done. Kind of like you/we are all doing from Google.
Anyway.. I have enjoyed doing this for the time I have been. It has been great, and with the exception of the ones referred to I have made friends and met some cool people. But I don't want to be apart of this drama, nonsense, and kid games that come along with this HOBBY. Nothing but repect to everyone who have stood by me and have had fun running the ROMS. Much love!! There are A LOT of talented DEVs around, so there will always be cool stuff to run.
Rock on,
Jason

Sad, awesome support and Rom from this guy............ I have seen this a few times over the last few years. I'm sorry to hear this has happened again. Very sad day for Axiom, my device will forever miss your work!
it's a shame. i enjoyed tinkering with his roms back on the thunderbolt & been using his latest axi0m builds here also. i don't know him personally so can't comment there, but i do appreciate what he's done here. if you're reading this, thanks
it seems to be happening all the time here in all the phone forums..the stories are all the same really..someone thinks they own the code and someone else is stealing it..
really sucks!! wish it was like it was back in the day..
Funny how the big picture is. Open source vs closed source. Things like this just put a dent in things.

Unfortunately nothing and no one is ever perfect. All you can do is do your best, what gives you joy, and what makes sure you can sleep at night. Expecting anything else will drive you insane. It takes all kinds, including those that can fight the good fight if the have the time and energy.

Sounds like the real world, cut throat and all. Maybe some devs are feeling the pressure of being displaced as some GN owners are uninterested in ROM downloads.
Nothing new. Heck last week kejar31 accused me of kanging Google apps. LOL.
Keep creating, android is open source. Building and sustaining a business for 15 years is far more difficult than dealing with bickering android devs. Also, there is no TOO MUCH when accepting donations for your current and future creation. There really is no reason to quit creating, especially cuz ICS and GN is still unrefined.

He shouldn't take his work down. From that post alone it shows how passionate he is about his work. Id much rather have something someone is proud of than something someone just threw together just so they can look cool with a bigger version number.

Just don't support Team Liquid Roms or donate to them
It was from what I read Nocoast from that team who started the drama. not sure what the problem was directly.
If you want to get someone back, its always best to hit them where it really hurts, their pocket book. Quit donating to nocoast or team liquid, simple.
First, let me say I have always enjoyed his work. And I personally think he makes an excellent ROM. I used his ROM on the Bionic, and LOVED it... until he abandoned it in the middle of the night.
I am going to use the Bionic as an example because I never used his ROM when I was using the Razr (I was a little butt hurt over the Bionic).
He made, IMO, the best ROM for the Bionic. He put out almost daily updates, which is good. But almost a pain to keep up with! Then he evolved the ROM to be modular with different themes. As to be expected with a major build change it was a little fragmented with users trying to evolve with the ROM. But there was a TON of potential. Then just a few days later...poof the thread was gone, and no more support.
People have said he broke his bionic or something like that, but why pull the thread? Why not explain to users what happened and let them know they need to transition to a new ROM if you are unable to support it?
You can make the best ROM the world has ever seen. But if you make those kind of decisions you cant whine about the criticism.
This guy has the mentality of a 12 year old. No matter how many people compliment him or speak highly of his work, eventually he is going to read some ignorant comment and get his feelings hurt. Then he takes his ball and goes home.
I have read through several of his ROM threads on mulitple sites, and they don't look any different than any other Devs threads. ROMS are like Phones, Everyone is going to debate which one is better and why. It is all based on the users opinion and what suits their needs.
Why can't this guy see that he has very loyal followers (mistawolf), that should be all he needs. His ego has got to be as fragile as a naked iPhone.
The effects of this decision:
His supporters = Abandoned, hung out to dry.
The Haters = Don't care, they didn't want it anyway.
He is a very talented and smart guy, but in the end he is a quitter.
these DEV drama seems to happen very often with accusations from one Cook to the other
if only people would stop being so self righteous and share the work without asking questions we can all go with our merry life and every one can co-work and pick anything thats needed to make a ROM cook the way anyone wants

BINGO!
This is what we need to do. When dev's heads get too big and they start attacking other devs for doing, most likely, the exact same thing that they were doing when they first started out.
We have the power to stop this, just boycot nocaost and team liquid, once their donations stop coming in they will fizzle out just like they deserve.
Yeah...everyone needs to keep in mind there are no "owners" here. If I wanna copy your ROM line for line I have every right to. Does it make it ok or cool? No. But you can't steal something the other person doesn't own.
Right from source.android.com:
"We wanted to make sure that there was no central point of failure, so that no industry player can restrict or control the innovations of any other. That's why we created Android, and made its source code open"
If you're going to code you should be prepared to have every single letter you type used by others. Sounds like some devs have a holier than thou asshole mentality, which is not what Android is about.

If it really was just one person then the TEAM needs to come out, say they dont approve of what that one guy did and that it in no way refelcts how they run as a team, and that they are getting rid of him.
They either stand behind what that guy did or abandom him from the team.

what's your policy for donating to our Nitro HD developers?

I'm new to smartphones, android, xda and custom ROM dev, well, as of buying this phone 6 months ago. I am curious what are the guidelines for donations for dev done? Typically, I will download a ROM and if I keep it running for longer than a day, I will donate to the developer, if I continue using it and they continue dev with significant updates, I'll chip in again.
is that about right? Also, what amount is generally accepted as about right?

As much as you want. I don't chip in until a very very stable version of a Rom and that amount is significant
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
is that typical? waiting until a "very very stable" version is released? I've been throwing down way too early then.
i understand donating as much as I want (it's not exactly a want scale, though, economics do apply) but the question was what amount is generally accepted as about right. going by what apps cost, one may assume $2 is about right, I don't happen to be one of those people, but that's what some may perhaps feel is about right.
hmmmmm, quiet in here for some reason, lots of views, 1 comment. i wonder why.
This is kinda an awkward conversation to have lol. It's mostly up to you. I've donated to CM, for example, because RC unlocked the potential of our phone before anyone else really. There's no requirement to donate, for sure, and a lot of devs do what they do to make their own devices better. And if you've gone through the work to make your phone better, why not help others?
Sent from my LG-P930 using Tapatalk 2
shouldn't be awkward. I would imagine the only people it's awkward for are those who don't donate. could be wrong but with all the *donate to me* buttons and sig space devoted to dev combined with the spirit of this community ( clicking thanks for helping, for example) I would have thunk more people would chime in, obviously this forum is built around dev and that dev is supported by donations
I've never felt awkward donating to anything, more importantly, I've never felt awkward discussing things that deserve donations so I am unclear on why xda posters who do would feel awkward chatting about donations.
I have yet to donate because the only rom I've ever flashed is CM9 RC1. I imagine there's a way to donate to the folks at Cyanogen. I'll have to look.
I'm definitely willing to donate if I find myself using someone's work, but I've just been hesitant to try so many things because I wouldn't know what to do if I screwed up. I know there's good support by our devs, but I find myself waiting until the community deems a rom virtually foolproof and stable.

Why are devs so pushy about kangs

I'm sorry to have to even ask this, but why does it feel like, recently many devs have been pulling down kangs of their work and in some cases outright ending development because of kangs. Did something happen recently, or is everyone just butt hurt because summer's over?
This is meant as an actual question not s gripe
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I think its kinda like if I started another thread and copied the title of your thread but changed the words around and asked the same question word for word in the thread and then added 1 sentence about my day.
I really think devs get upset cause THIER hard work coding theming tweaking is poached and Frankensteined together with another devs work then labeled a ROM with a donate button...
Now I'm sure if the donate button was to the original devs PayPal the world would be a happier place!
Just my opinion...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Because the devs are not doing an easy job developing and do not request any kind of payment? I think that explains enough.
Kangers could just ask them to include some part of the devs mod to be included in their work and maybe, maybe, to some extent, the devs will allow it.
Sent from The Nexus phone
As far as am concerned all this software is open source so go crazy with kanging. If a Dev releases there source code why not. That is the spirit of aosp. As long as the original Dev is given credit and the kang developer doesn't try and pass it off as his own work I say go for it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
The problem seems to lie in some kangers not giving due credit and/or seeking to turn a profit from the work of others. It can be disheartening for someone who puts in hours of work coding to see others take their work, incorporate it into a bit and pieced rom and then ask for donations. It's not necessarily about having your work "stolen," but rather about its misappropriation, if that makes any sense.
It is an open source community, but common decency should still entail asking permission, giving credit where credit is due, and not shamelessly trying to make money off others' hard work.
I agree, I don't have a problem if a kanger had a donate button as long as a) the is significant changes from the original rom. Or b) a pledge to give the original Dev some support/donation towards there rom (I.e. Helping fix bugs. Submitting code to the whole AOSP branch etc.)
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
It takes away from their downloads. It's like if I downloaded a rom, changed a couple things and called it my own. If I spent as much time as these devs do and someone called it theirs I would be mad too
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
its actually simple...donate a certain percentage of the donation to the original dev..that way everyones happy...kangers will make kangs better and devs dont get hurt because they get a certain donation without much work..

The last sentence confuses me. If devs aren't doing much work; what exactly are kangers kanging? I don't mean to be a prick but I think it's worth a thought.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Most devas take from CM anyways so I don't know what the big deal is.
Personally I think only devs who have their own git should be able to receive donations. If your free and willing to submit your work and expose your source code and what you have done, you should be free to except donations. WinZip wizards need not apply
As far as Kangs go, I think due credit should be enough

Goodbye fellow A100 modders

It's been fun, but it's time to move on. There really isn't any reason for me to continue work on this device, linux society has his kernels and now builds a CM10 rom, and the only things that made my roms different are also in his roms, so I choose to stop work and move onto another device that needs some loving. His roms and kernels and other mods will make for a spectacular CM10 based rom for you guys, I'm sure of it.
I'll continue to work with waydownsouth for the a100 device for CM, but other then that, I'm retired from the A100.
Please feel free to continue to PM, email, or even gchat me for help or just to BS, you can still find me in #iconia-dev on freenode though I'm afk most of the time.
Kuroikaze B2 and CM9 Nightly B68 will be my final uploaded roms for the A100. Jellytime X will never be uploaded, it has issues that require some work after flashing that I just don't feel the need to fix as I'm just going to stop afterwards anyways.
I had considered moving to the A200, but linux society has also ported to that device, so I'll move off the Iconia devices entirely and find something new to mess around with.
I've enjoyed the community a lot, and I hope it continues to grow and develop as it has been for the last few months I've been a part of it. It's one of the calmest, most helpful communities on XDA.
I'd just like to say thanks for all your hard work. I've learned alot from your posts. And good luck on your next endeavour.
If nothing else, I hope you stick around in the community, even without your work. I understand your reasons and appreciate all you've done , but just having good people around fosters a better community i think, even if they aren't actively contributing to development.
This being my 1st post, and new to the A100 I really reek of noob, but I have truly enjoyed your posts, projects and tutorials - they have really helped me (and countless others I'm sure) understand things better before I starting playing blindly. A big thanks for this, and best of luck with your future projects!
The A100 wouldn't be as active and fun to use without tireless contributions and efforts of great members like you. Thank you pio for all you have done and your support. Best of luck on your new projects. Before I get my next device I would want to be sure pio is lurking in that device's forum

Thanks once again and as always Pio. Your were, IMHO, the most contributing member of this community. You will be missed and remembered by this community Pio. May you continue your great work (as usual ), and reap your rewards to come (you know ).

Well when I said I'm retiring, I meant ROM wise, I do intend to remain on the forums and in IRC to help futher the community, be it in helpful posts or testing something out for waydownsouth or godmachine or anyone else needing testing or work done for the A100.
That being said, I just got home with my new toy, the Toshiba Thrive. I'll be doing my research, gathering files, and hopefully, waydownsouth, randomblame, gh123man and godmachine/linux society would be willing to help me with the parts that are still beyond me (which is most of it lol).
I am planning to keep the A100 for awhile yet, though if I get a decent offer, I may take it. For now, though, the A100 remains in my possession and for now at least, still gets a little love from me (in other words, an occasional kuroikaze may appear on goo.im, you know me, if I built it, may as well share it). Its a discontinued ROM, but I do still plan to at least include upstream CM updates and changes from time to time.
Thank you pio for all you've done to make our a100s awesome.

[REQUEST] AOSP/CM10/etc buildbox donation thread [info inside]

PayPal here:
Any donations and/or support are greatly appreciated.
11/14/12: withdrew monies from PayPal. Putting it towards purchases of some more hardware. Leaving the donation link up because this project could surely use much more support! Thanks to everyone who contributed so far!
10/30/12: made a quick update to the chipin site. Still working on getting the chipin site and Paypal to sync properly, but all donations are definitely showing in the Paypal, so no worries.
UPDATE: The first donation of up to $50 dollars, I will match with a donation of $50.
UPDATE 2: Due to popular demand, there will be a "learner box" created for those that want to "experiment" with development on a faster machine. There should be enough parts to put it together and have it running as we approach the current project goal.
PayPal here:
Any donations and/or support are greatly appreciated.
Currently supported devs (a big thanks goes out to them and their work!): Phantomphreak53 (CM10 nightlies), kbizzle (Paranoid Android), and justlovejoy (CNA)
This Dude Is Amazing In his efforts to contribute to the true meaning of AOSP for ALL!
Thank You! Without You CNA wouldnt have moved as fast as it did and my future ROM's
Hopefully too! Thank You Again Sir!
If I had the money to throw down on this I would definitely make a donation for this.
Not only would this help cut build times, this would also speed up the time it takes to sync repositories, depending on the connection that the build box has.

I use to donate to Developers, because they spend time developing instead studying, hanging with friends or family etc.
But to be honest, and judging about other threads by you. This sounds more like: "i want a new computer" than "lets help the community".
I hope to be wrong.

This is not a "I want to buy a new computer" type of thread.
This is a thread for donations to help keep his server up and running. Running a cloud based server for building from source requires a good internet connection, and I'm not talking 12, 20, or even 50Mbps... at the minimum it needs a good fiber connection with something like 100Mbps down and at a minimum 50Mbps up.
Just think of this, it is similar to a virtual machine you can run at home.. but you can have multiple sessions running at once. Justlovejoy could be doing something, slick_rick could be doing something, sbrissen, phantomphreak, etc. If one needs to do a sync of the repository, there would be plenty of bandwidth and processing power for all of the developers to do so.
With donations, he could go out and get more memory for making backups. He could set a cron job for something like 6 in the morning after the nightly builds complete to make a backup image of the entire build box. Our developers work is safe if there is ever any failure. That means less time reconfiguring build environment, syncing repositories, building, committing changes to github...

No love for sbrissen? Pretty sure most (all?) of JB development is using part of his code or chris41g's

We would not have jellybean if it was not for sbrissen. End of story. All other developers are secondary.

I invite you to read the information contained in the link to the chipin site. I have tried to elaborate as much as possible to help everyone understand the purpose of this project. I am including a quote from the chipin site (which I plan to update with any future upgrades for the project):

**Note: This box is used specifically for development. This is not my personal computer. I do not use it to play games, type papers, or do my taxes. It is completely maintained, updated, and kept running by me. On my own donated time and money. And is completely "owned" by others. I do not benefit from any of this directly. The community (users and devs) benefit from this project.**

I hope that clears some things up for everyone ^

We hope to be able to invite more devs in the future. With more power, greater things come.

You are correct, we owe credit to sbrissen for jellbybean. These "secondary devs" have produced many good roms. They have allowed the community more choices. They actively work on fixes. They try to answer the communities requests. They provide you nightlies (for the flash-o-holics out there). It doesn't sound like you are giving these "secondary devs" as much credit as they are due.
This is a completely independent project. Without support from the community, it will be hard for these great devs to continue to put out the work that they do.

Thats not the point of this thread. Everyone here knows sbrissen brought us JB and were all grateful for that.

That's my point. Why is he not included into this?. Afaik he is the only one developing AOSP as the thread title indicates.

AOSP stands for android open source project. All of the roms listed are not touchwiz. Hence, they are AOSP. Also, the thread doesn't ever "not include" sbrissen or others. It simply states the devs that use the buildbox that I have created. That is all stated in everything I have written. If you want to donate to sbrissen, that is your choice.
As basketthis has already said... this buildbox is not only limited to the devs that are currently using his server.
I would imagine if the resources like CPUs, RAM, and bandwidth allow for it... any dev that builds from source can use this option to build their source built roms. Even kernel devs such as Agat could use this option to build from source.
The sky is the limit to how many devs could take advantage of this, the only thing that is holding this back is contributions from the community. Instead of donating $5 to a dev, you could donate 3 or 4 and donate 1 or 2 to the build box fund... or you could just donate to the dev and the dev should donate for using the build box. Either way, there will be contributions to help keep the build box up and running.

Umm the point of this thread is for e4gt users to donate (if they want) to this build box so devs can put out their roms quicker and such. Nowhere does it say sbrissen isn't allowed to use it. If he wanted to use it I'm sure he could.

Hmmmmmm how would one get this build box to try out? I kinda want to "tinker" with source building but my laptop sucks. The specs are horrible

You must challenge and defeat Chuck Norris at a game of thumb wars.
But, seriously, just trying to help out the badasses around here. If more resources become available, I will be happy to invite more.
I would make a donation to say sbrissen before i made a dination like this. This seems highly risky to me.

Risky??? Your joking right? This is the type of thing the developers you are going to donate to will be using to build ROMs you are donating for...
This community has been scarred by people like SG...

Its by invite only? No wonder. Fail.
If you can prove you are a good enough dev, you would get an invite to use this service.
How is that a fail? Are you expecting complete noobs to use this and waste resources? If someone wants to get their feet wet with development, run a virtual machine.
This service is for speeding up build times for experienced devs...

That's fine but it should be a service for everyone who wants to try to develop. I have a itch to learn but like I said I don't have a computer with enough hardware to build a source ROM with. So how can I "prove myself" to anyone. Either way I won't donate to something I got absolutely zero access too. That's just my 2 cents. I'm sure others feel the same.
