Burst Mode on Note2 Camera - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Also curious if the camera on the Note 2 is any better than the S3 as when I tested the S3 vs HTC One X in burst mode, the One X blew the S3 away in quality in burst mode (every shot in burst mode on One X looked sharp-in focus where burst mode on S3 was so bad it made the shots practically of little-no value). Let us know if the burst mode on the Note 2 is actually usable (even if you don't have access to One X which many regard as having an amazing camera). { Maybe the S3 I tested was defective but its burst mode was laughably:laugh: bad compared the the One X. }
- Thanks

I can definitely agree with you about the S3 camera having owned a One X prior to this, can't believe none of the reviewers eg theverge picked up on this :/
I will hopefully be getting the note tomorrow so I'll test this for you unless someone else does first

Any tech blog not covering the Note2 is suspect of drinking the Apple Kool-Aid :highfive::laugh:
http://www.technobuffalo.com/companies/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-first-impressions-video/
http://www.youtube.com/user/phonedog
I still check out Engadget & occasionally TheVerge but they are dropping the ball on the Note2 so far.
BTW, I've read reviews saying the Note2 has the exact same camera as the S3? When I tested the S3 vs OneX & got blurring on only the S3 it was when I was using burst mode while tracking a moving object like people walking & moving around etc (such non-rapid movement was only blurry on the S3, they looked sharp on One X). Burst mode while perfectly still is not really a real-life challenge test..:fingers-crossed: Maybe the S3 I tested was defective but would appreciate confirmation on the usability of burst mode on the Note2 under such real life applicability?

the burst shoot mode is not practical when i tested it, what ever moves in front shows up blurry but the background is well focused... so not really useful at all.
The shutter lag on single shots is really fast so i dont think i'll ever use the stock burst mode - might actually have to turn it off as it activates just by holding the shoot button.

Nothing much known about the sensor SGS3 uses. It's S5C73M3 BSI sensor. Whereas HOX uses the Samsung sensor S5K3H2YX. This was one of sensors in SGS2. HOX has the same sensor used in SGS2.

Indept Camera & Video Details
Both are equally good.
no, they're not equally good. The SGS3 has a yellow tint on it and is significantly less sharp.
Also.. picture quality has little to do with the sensor itself. It has all to do with optics.
(and from a photographers view: putting a 8MP sensor in a phone is bogus as no optics on a phone allow for that resolution on the sensor.)
But.. anyway: The SGS3 has the camera hardware not finalized. This might change until the first units ship. I promise that the yellow tint will dissapear in the SGS3 - but it will stay less sharp than the HOX.
But nevertheless, the HOX is significantly better. Really - and I don't own one but do consider myself a amateur photographer.
And one more thing on the sensor used: In that user review from "boodies" he talks about the sensor of the HOX being the same as in the SGS2. So what? It's just a sensor. The sensor does not get you image quality (read: sharpness). It get's you color accuracy and light sensitivity (together with the aperture).
No sensor can produce image quality (read: sharpness) as this is solely the part of the optics (read: the lenses). Nobody should give a damn about which phone uses which sensor. The images posted here clearly show the results: actual resolution, color accuracy and lighting is waaay better on the HOX.
period. (and I'm not a fan-boy - I look at the pictures alone)
I wish photographers would review smartphone cameras. Smartphone people know some stuff about user interface, CPUs and GPUs - but image quality is the topic of photographers.
Here's a mean statement: Maybe the yellow tint on the SGS3 is compensated by a blueish tint of the AMOLED ?

I think it's really too early to judge. Software really matters here - I'll wait at least for the final device. Even HTC improved the camera with update 1.29 and I hope it's keep getting better. Too bad they have such aggressive compression

Thinking about getting a One X. How is the camera?

Hello.
How are you?
Currently I have a galaxy note. I really like the phone, but I am thinking about switching.
I use my phone to make calls and text. To use my gmail account and Google calendar. I don't play games and I don't use a lot of apps
I use xda, tapatalk for internet forums, Facebook for the occasional upload and chrome for some web browsing.
I also use the phone as a music player when commuting.
This pretty much sums my use.
I am thinking about the One x, because I would lime something a bit smaller to use with one hand, and a phone with a better camera IQ wise, to avoid taking a camera everywhere.
So, how does the One X fare in this? Is the camera that much better than the one on the note?
I am also thinking about the Nokia 808 pureview.
It has the best camera of any phone today, and is also a great music player in regard to audio quality.
I don't like the screen resolution and also the fact that it runs Nokia belle leaves me a bit scared of not being able to do what I currently do with my phone...
So, based on this, what are your thoughts?
Please help me out making a decision.
Thank you
cheers

I would say the One X has a pretty good camera. Taking pictures at night could be a little better. I just switched off from a T-mobile Galaxy SII (pretty much the same camera as the note) to the HTC One X and have to say the colors on the SII are a lot brighter then the One X however the One X does make the picture look a lot more realistic.

Photography is the art of playing with available light, pics can be great with many cameras. But if you're viewing pictures at 100% zoom that's a different story altogether. However, the HOX default camera app does have a lot of compression which is needed to get to the kinds of burst that it's capable off. If you're taking your time composing images, I use a 3rd party camera app like Camera360 which bypasses the processing so I get much better quality images.

Google is your friend .
Have a look at these comparisons/reviews:
Nokia 808 PureView blind test: The sum of all pixels
Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III vs. HTC One X
As you can see in the first link, Nokia undoubtedly has the better camera, but that’s the only good thing about that phone, IMO the Belle OS will be a huge disappointment for you coming from a G.Note.
As for the One X, it has a pretty good camera, but IMO Galaxy S3 has a better one.
Given the options I think S3 would be a better choice for you because:
It has a slightly better camera,
has a higher capacity removable battery,
already having a GNote you might find the SAMOLED screen of S3 more appealing than One X’s screen (I know One X produces more true to life colors, but after getting used to the over saturated vibrant colors of an AMOLED screen, most people find other screens a little washed out, just my openion..),
if you already prefer touchwiz UI then you’ll feel more comfortable (on top of that TW has some cool new features as well)
last but not least no stupid locked bootloaders, and better community support.

thank you for the replies.
Is the camera on the S3 that different from the one on the Note? In regard to hardware, mainly, lens and sensor?
Or is it pretty much the same with a better native camera App to take advantage of it?
Cheers!
Although ive never played with the s3. The s2 seems to be a lot like the note. My only guess would be an upgraded camera with basically the same features. U can get the most out of ur pix with a 3rd party camera app like uCam or camera360. I'd skip on the one X if its for photography.

So, from your post I can conclude that for photo quality, it is either the 808 pureview or stick with my note?
The one x is not a visible upgrade from the note on regard to the camera?

Camera Quality...

As a new one x user coming from a sensation im a little dissapointed in the onex camera tbh, from what I can tell the quality isnt that much better,???
Any tips or advice appreciated
too saturated, isn't it?
I find pictures too saturated indeed. At -1, they are too unsaturated. Probably a setting of -0.5 (which is not possible) would be best! I hope this will be solved indeed.
Even though OneX’s camera is pretty good (especially under low light conditions) I don’t think its significantly better than 8MP phone cameras from last year. Phones cameras are getting better each day, but they are still far behind even dedicated compact P&S cameras.

Well, phone camera sensors and lenses have to be small, and therefore lose quality.
Take a look at the photo thread some great pictures in there, takes time to get that good shoot.
For still subjects try hdr mode, takes a light then dark picture then renders them together so you get better contrast from light to dark.
Also remember that the gallery has photo edits and not just pre sets as full control on levels etc.

Not even going to beat a sub $200 compact point & shoot camera (let alone DSLRs)... My 4 year old 8MP Canon compact takes far better photos.
I haven't done extensive testing, but from the few indoor and outdoor photos taken by me from both phones, I think under dark conditions One X produces slightly better images (but still very grainy), but with plenty of light S3 produces better images (if not equal) to One X.
saturation
My previous HTC HD2 (with Android ROM) produced better pictures than my new HTC One X: less saturated. Pictures look to colour-ish, I would say with the HOX.
Some good replies here so thanks a lot I've not actually fiddled too much with the camera yet, overall i'm pretty pleased with my upgrade from sensation to one x, fortunately i bought the onex simfree and am on a 1 month contract so next htc handset (or possibly something else) i may upgrade to that

Hahaha! Yea I was thinking it has a higher resolution but yet the battery is weaker than that of the GS3. So either you carry a charger with you all day or have a set of battery extension because its going to drain fast during usage.
Now I wouldn't think about trading my Note 2 for the DNA one bit because both phones pretty much have the same specs. The Note 2 at 720p is already rich in screen resolution. You'll have to stare at it from about half an inch away from the screen to notice the pixels. I'm pretty sure you'll see less pixels on the DNA while staring at the screen from the same distance, but who'll want to do that?. With the Note 2 you can also record videos and take pictures at the same time like the how the HTC always advertise on their phones. Nothing new about that. Now the only down side I see on the DNA is no stylus (many people who hates holding a pencil, let alone writing their name would not care for it at all), no expansion slot (I cannot rely on cloud storage as an alternative), the battery is weak and non-removable (so unlike the Note 2 it is not meant for heavy usage), and finally it's from Verizon (the carrier whom loves to brand the **** out of their phones).
But I don't like to tell people what to get. If any phone they find that suits them, then great and good luck with their new devices. We all win. :good:
EDIT: Forgot to mention that with LTE the DNA will suffer even more on its battery.

The only thing arguably better would be the display / resolution. Other than that, Note 2 owns all the way. At this point in time, I don't really care much for 1080p. For my next phone in about a year or two, thats a different story.

I checked out the Note2 again tonight this time only for about 15 min when I stopped by Best Buy & immediately felt like this is such a real huge upgrade from my EVO 4G that I must have it soon. Then I started noticing the whites weren't as white as my EVO & it could be brighter (set to max) & even experienced some lag but I did not have time to do a reboot.
I am curious to see the DDNA, 1080p natural color screen with amazing cameras like the OneX & improved speaker etc but obviously annoyed with battery & sdcard situtation (not a huge fan of all the red styling either but would slap a case on it) yet I will have to check it out. I think the OneX variants are the best "smartphone" display & camera & at 5" DDNA should be impressive (always thought 5" is a great size but the N2 managed its 5.55" amazingly as well & the stylus puts it in its own class).
So do the non-white whites & brightness of the screen around sunlight on the N2 ever bother anyone?

I would go back to HTC if they stopped emulating the iPhone in their designs. My SGN2 is my first non-HTC phone in 7 years - They no longer offer anything I'm interested in.

I will admit that the 440ppi and handling of colors is a huge notch against the n2.. the droid however is it a dealbreaker for me...No...does it hurt people who are truly craving that 1080p display and higher color reproduction...it might...Htc decisions to do certain designs and moves on there devices seem to be pushing people away already from what it seems...as well as the fact the series of their devices theyve released is starting to flow the "Apple way"..thats just coming from me though

No doubt. I gave my Galaxy S III to my girlfriend. I held it this morning for the first time in a week. It feels so small and tiny now that I'm used to my Note II. Next phone I get will need to be around the size of the Note II.

What he meant is Galaxy Note 2 is better than the Sony ZL. I want to try one but but it is more expensive than the note 2. I am not a Samsung fan but I have to admit that No other smart phones can beat the Note 2 right now.
I just sold my note 2...going get xperia zl when it becomes available...

Ha ha.. Sold my note2 as well in a heartbeat as soon I laid my hands upon the ZL. And I'm very happy with my decision.
Apart from the bigger screen & battery life on note2, I find everything else better on the ZL (which also doesn't have buggy emmc nor corrupts those 64gb SanDisk SDXC cards like note2/GS3 ).
Sold note 1 for zl tho.. Im quite satisfied. My samsung experience was horrible. Batt bloated 3xs for one year of usage. Cant waste more money.

It really depends on how u use it. If u like to simply point and shoot, I would say Samsung (note2/GS3) is bit better for day photography, but Sony is better for indoors & night shots. But, if you workaround (play with different modes/settings ), then Xperia camera beats Samsung's, whether day or night. I've had some decent shots with my note2, but some really good ones with the ZL. Having said that, I have no doubt that the camera hardware is much better in the ZL, but sony really need to fix the default high ISO preference (auto mode) & resulting loss of sharpness (due to over smoothening). Besides, I feel that Samsung camera software is zippier, with better optimised post processing, but always liked the colours (also details due to higher pixel count) captured by Sony more than by Samsung.

I don't know about Dpk1's experience, but I've had better luck with getting good pictures switching to Normal mode instead of using the default Superior+ mode. I seem to be able to get the right exposure and focus on a consistent basis this way.

Try this. What I usually do is use the auto mode with auto flash at night/poor light, and Normal mode with ISO auto, hdr off, center metering, flash off in bright light. For indoors ISO 200/400, flash off, hdr off, average metering. For landscapes (in daylight), the scene mode "landscape" does a decent job. I'm yet exploring other options. I've also noticed that auto mode sometimes delivers quite good results even in daylight (its a hit or miss). Burst mode (mid) does provide crisp images in bright daylight. Sony really needs to improve on the post processing, i.e reduce & optimise its aggressive noise reduction. Hope it helps.
Iv been a Note 2 user since it came out and i have zero complaints..I wanted to give the ZL a try because i figured google wallet would work on an unlocked phone. When i got the ZL i was very happy. But the happiness didnt last long. I love the looks of the phone but there are alot of downsides that i experienced (which might not be what you guys experience).
First the size, im so used to using the big note 2 its hard to use something smaller even if it is only .5 smaller. its a big difference when you type and web browse etc.
2nd, google wallet doesnt work unless you root and tweak and tweak and etc..i want google wallet working straight out of the box since its an unlocked non carrier specific phone with nfc.
3rd, the signal on the ZL is not the greatest, it doesnt seem to get my wifi signal too well compared to my note 2 and it would be in hsdpa(+) mode in an LTE area sometimes where my note 2 would be in LTE all the time. also the LTE signal is weaker by one bar compared to my note 2.
4th, the screen is beautiful and crisp but the note 2 screen seems so much brighter and more vibrant, thats just my opinion.
5th, camera start up time is like 4 seconds..this is on the initial start up..from then when i close the camera and reopen it it starts up within 2 seconds which the note 2 does every single time.
6th, i compared the call quality to the note 2 since i heard the quality on the ZL was awesome. I heard alot of hissing noise when calling someone and during the call. I know that has alot to do with the network but when i called on the note 2 right after i get no hissing noise. its just a cleaner call quality on the note 2..much cleaner..for me
7th, battery. I knew going into this the battery wouldnt compare to the note 2 but my god the battery sucks..im to used to the note 2 lasting 2 days.
8th, the loud speaker sounds good but the note 2 speaker blows it away..there is a big difference in the speaker quality and music output
there were few other minor issues like the notification light bug which i got around and fixed it.. but those r the main ones..so im keeping my note 2 and selling the ZL..I hope you guys have a better experience with the ZL than me..i wanted to like this phone so bad but it cant beat the note 2 sorry guys.
I LOVE The size of my zl but its sitting in a box. I ordered a note 2 and should be here Monday. The value of the zl dropped big time. I paid 635 when it came out and I can't even sell it used for 500

Well
I Just ordered a Xperia ZL today - Will be here Tuesday - Paid $515 delivered to me - Put my Note II for sale online and locally.
The 1080p Screen and easier "pocket-ability" is what got me Interested - and the fact that I could get it for almost nothing after I sell my Note II.
It was an impulse buy as it was a good price and only 2 of them were available.
This thread has me wondering - I expect the battery life to be less - But I think I'll be happy with it.

Battery life is definitely note2's forte (7hrs vs 5.5hrs screen time for me). But I am enjoying my ZL and certainly don't miss my note2 (sold). It's more portable & fits in pocket/hand better than note2. I'm much impressed with sony's build quality! Mine survived a 3ft drop (without case) on concrete floor with minor scratches on two edges, which note2 certainly wouldn't have imo. I think the call signal/volume is as good as on note2 (even louder maybe) on C6502. Camera launches faster than note2 within 1-1.5 secs from screen off/sleep (using camera button). Default sound quality (via headphones) is better on the ZL to my ears & speakers are loud enough (note2 was louder). I can't even think of going back to 270ppi AMOLED display after being spoiled by super crisp 441ppi Sony ZL's display! Reading text is much better on ZL, its like night and day for me !
Remember, every device has its pros n cons. So, don't be bothered and enjoy your new purchase!
