Actually closer to useless as a scanner.

My camera take pics just fine..maybe you need to look in some settings, but if that's too difficult I'm sure someone would gladly trade you their iPhone. Cause that phone is useless indeed.
Ps.- bashing the phone in the section its in probably isn't a good idea. Most ppl here like their phone and calling it useless might make them less inclined to help you

bashing the camera yes, not the phone, yes I am rooted running stock rom, I have not messed much with the settings, have you tried taking a picture of a document and see how good of a scan you get?
I will look at the setting, but I have my doubts that I will ever get as good an image as the iphone.
Seriously HTC get it together, I should not have to carry an additional scanner.

You should mess with the settings or you're just not getting a good picture.
What app are you using? or are you just taking pictures and uploading them?
I have both the iphone 3GS and my Inc 2. I also have access to an iphone 4 and 4S and I have to say that the inc 2 camera is on par with the 4S camera which is supposed to have the best optics out of all the iphones.
I can post up results too if you like? Are you sure your lens isn't smudged? or possibly defective?
IPhone 4s and dinc2 both have 8mp cameras bro. Adjust your settings I know that when I was running stock 8mp wasn't the default

So your saying I got screwed on my brand new phone.
I am not using any program just taking a picture, after all that's what my buddy does with his phone.
Maybe I will go by the Verizon store and see if the phone they have does better than mine.
My buddy had the iphone 4, and now has the 4S, and I have to say the document picture taken with the Dinc is no good at all.
I will post pics.

I have not compared the quality of pictures, just images of documents, if I am trying to focus binoculars, of cameras, I focus on trying to read something, but in this case I need the documents to mail them in PDF format after printing them.
I'd have to agree that the iphone 4s does have better picture quality. It is newer hardware after all. The dinc2 camera works perfectly for me though. You have to remember it's a phone with a camera, not a camera with a phone.

To be honest you're never going to get the quality of a scanner from your phone, and indoor lighting is generally terrible as shown here.
I'll take a pic using the iphone 4S tonight and post it. I'm going to redo all 3 that way we can have a test with similar variables.

I think you need to adjust your metering in settings. I'm able to do that on cm7 not sure if its an option with the stock camera app, but the consensus is that the sense camera is better than the aosp camera. When metering mode is changed from center weighted to frame average on cm7 i get no focal spot blur like i do in a shot with center weight metering.
Maybe someone with a sense camera can chime in on what metering options are available with it but changing that might help your focal blur on documents
Center weighted. Text blur near top

Hello.
How are you?
Currently I have a galaxy note. I really like the phone, but I am thinking about switching.
I use my phone to make calls and text. To use my gmail account and Google calendar. I don't play games and I don't use a lot of apps
I use xda, tapatalk for internet forums, Facebook for the occasional upload and chrome for some web browsing.
I also use the phone as a music player when commuting.
This pretty much sums my use.
I am thinking about the One x, because I would lime something a bit smaller to use with one hand, and a phone with a better camera IQ wise, to avoid taking a camera everywhere.
So, how does the One X fare in this? Is the camera that much better than the one on the note?
I am also thinking about the Nokia 808 pureview.
It has the best camera of any phone today, and is also a great music player in regard to audio quality.
I don't like the screen resolution and also the fact that it runs Nokia belle leaves me a bit scared of not being able to do what I currently do with my phone...
So, based on this, what are your thoughts?
Please help me out making a decision.
Thank you
cheers

I would say the One X has a pretty good camera. Taking pictures at night could be a little better. I just switched off from a T-mobile Galaxy SII (pretty much the same camera as the note) to the HTC One X and have to say the colors on the SII are a lot brighter then the One X however the One X does make the picture look a lot more realistic.

Photography is the art of playing with available light, pics can be great with many cameras. But if you're viewing pictures at 100% zoom that's a different story altogether. However, the HOX default camera app does have a lot of compression which is needed to get to the kinds of burst that it's capable off. If you're taking your time composing images, I use a 3rd party camera app like Camera360 which bypasses the processing so I get much better quality images.

Google is your friend .
Have a look at these comparisons/reviews:
Nokia 808 PureView blind test: The sum of all pixels
Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III vs. HTC One X
As you can see in the first link, Nokia undoubtedly has the better camera, but that’s the only good thing about that phone, IMO the Belle OS will be a huge disappointment for you coming from a G.Note.
As for the One X, it has a pretty good camera, but IMO Galaxy S3 has a better one.
Given the options I think S3 would be a better choice for you because:
It has a slightly better camera,
has a higher capacity removable battery,
already having a GNote you might find the SAMOLED screen of S3 more appealing than One X’s screen (I know One X produces more true to life colors, but after getting used to the over saturated vibrant colors of an AMOLED screen, most people find other screens a little washed out, just my openion..),
if you already prefer touchwiz UI then you’ll feel more comfortable (on top of that TW has some cool new features as well)
last but not least no stupid locked bootloaders, and better community support.

Is the camera on the S3 that different from the one on the Note? In regard to hardware, mainly, lens and sensor?
Or is it pretty much the same with a better native camera App to take advantage of it?
Cheers!
Although ive never played with the s3. The s2 seems to be a lot like the note. My only guess would be an upgraded camera with basically the same features. U can get the most out of ur pix with a 3rd party camera app like uCam or camera360. I'd skip on the one X if its for photography.

Stock apps are generally OK at images, but really no harm in installing a 3rd party app to take images too. Since you're on XDA, go get your phone rooted and install the HQ Camera mod THAT really makes a difference!

I honestly wouldn't go with the HTC One or the GS4 if you want a great mobile camera. Where the HTC One excels in average light and low-light, it is awful outdoors, and the 4MP's aren't anything extraordinary either. The iPhone5 has a slightly better camera than the One, and the 5S should be getting released in less than a month. I honestly hate referring you to the iPhone because it sucks everywhere else against Android. The 5S should be a getting a slightly improved camera which would put it as a good bit better than the One's camera. The GS4's camera isn't better than the One, but it does do better in bright lighting/outdoors and has a better MP count.
It is possible that the HTC One Max being released soon might be getting a better "Ultrapixel" camera than our non-phablet One's. Maybe look into that? Or the iPhone5S. I can't imagine the Nexus 5 being released in a few months would have a much better camera than last years Nexus, and not to mention it likely won't be on Verizon.
Also, the Moto X's camera is god awful.

Isn't odd to anyone else that you can't get the holy trifecta of build/update/camera on one phone these days? I am almost getting to that point where I am paranoid that there's been a backroom agreement between manufacturers to only have 1 or 2 out of 3....

I agree with this completely. HTC got nearly everything right except for the camera. I'm hoping that the next iteration has slightly less bezel (think Moto X form factor) and a camera on par to whatever the 5S will have. If so, I'll be buying one at full price to replace this HTC One.
Ok I have taken 2 pictures, one with the stock camera and one with the Vignette camera. How would you like to see them? They're not the best pictures because it was lightly raining and I didn't want to get my phone wet so I was trying to keep the phone under the eve of my roof.

Why the doubt? There has been at least one Sony Android phones on Verizon before.
We also need to consider another factor. A camera is only as good as the photographer using it. I am by no means a professional yet in have seen great pictures and taken great pics with the HTC one that I would put up against the gs4 or the iPhone 5(I have owned all 3). The HTC one has many more options than either one of those cameras when it comes to exposure, shutter, white balance, etc. The camera editor is also great on this phone. If you use the correct scene it also helps a bunch as well.
Unless we are talking about enlarging the pic bigger than a 4x6 or 5x7 then that's where the One would fail and the GS4 or ip5 would clearly succeed. As far as posting to Facebook or instagram etc the one will be great .

just embed them in this thread?
Not a great morning here, cloudy/foggy, but heres a shot from both stock and vignette, respectively. Also attached a zip of the 2 since the pics would be altered due to size limits. The 'brighter' one (also taken fist, check filename) is the stock. Didn't get Vignette to focus well, and can only take 3.1M images, was on "superfine" with no filter.
For some reason Vignette can only capture up to 3.1MP on the HTC One, plus it doesn't do HDR either. I find it best to use the stock camera with HDR and then share with Vignette for the filters I want to apply. The photo comes out better than just using Vignette straight.

if i used them yeah thats what you would have to do. HTC has an odd camera and pixel count, so i'm not surprised Vignette doesn't properly support it. They've always been good about resolving issues though, so theres hope.

Thanks for the read, as a photographer I'm still on the fence after reading it though. I already knew all about the sensors etc. If they had just found a way to maybe use a larger lens and squeeze in a 6 or 8mp sensor I'd have gotten the One a long time ago.
And just to help contribute to some digital photography knowledge: a 6mp camera translates into about an 8x10 print without having any loss in photo quality.

As a photographer, I'm surprised that a phone camera would be a breaking point for your purchase. There is currently no phone on the market that is of enough quality to reliably provide pictures for anything other than social media and email transfer.

Well I wouldn't use my phone camera for a job, I'm not saying that all. Maybe it's more the perfectionist in me than the photographer? I've been pretty happy with my Rezounds macro capability and I like having a little wiggle room for cropping. I'm not sure if I can upload a full res example, but maybe that's for the best. It might be seen as bragging or potentially argumentative and that's not my intention. It's also the lack of microSD memory card, and non-removable battery stuff, you know. I'm probably getting one pretty soon anyway though. My phone has started acting up. I'm just one of those people, indecisive and hesitant for the most part (nothing to be proud of).

I use a high end DSLR for most pictures I take, but when I want a quick picture of something, I don't find the HTC One camera experience enjoyable at all. I don't enjoy the process of using the camera, and I generally don't enjoy the end result.
Maybe I'm just spoiled because I have an amazing DSLR, but personally, I have found the camera to be the weakest part of the HTC One.

Out of curiosity, what do you find unenjoyable about the experience of using the camera?
I think it's safe to say that many of us use DSLR's for our most important pictures and I doubt anyone expects the camera of the phone to be either a replacement for a DSLR or nearly as good. I use my One mostly for pics and videos of my kids when it's the only camera I have on me. As long as the pics are clear and natural looking, I'm pretty happy. The most disappointing aspect of the camera to me is actually the camcorder. I agree the camera is the weakest aspect of the HTC One, but with such a great device otherwise, this doesn't mean I think the camera is bad by any means.
On another note, I'm surprised by the users who have said 4.3 has offered no improvement in camera performance. My pictures look much better since updating.

I agree with using the One when it's the only camera I have, same here. However, I don't know what it is, but I just find myself not even bothering taking pictures with my phone anymore since I've gotten the one. I was using an iPhone 5 for almost a year before the One (alongside a GS3), and I wouldn't hesitate to whip out my phone and take a quick picture. But since I've gotten the One, a lot of times I think "Hey! I should take a picture!" then I just... don't feel like it. I can't pinpoint it exactly. I take probably 1/10th the amount of pictures with my phone than I used to. And I LOVE photography.
I feel that such an amazing phone should have an equally amazing camera, but for me, it leaves something to be desired.

This is a really interesting point and I think I somewhat agree. While owning an iPhone 4s, I snapped pictures all the time. Many of these were of my newborn in good lighting so image quality was generally very good. When I decided to go back to Android, I decided camera quality, ease of camera use, and likelihood of camera use were all very important considerations. I bought the HTC One EVO on Sprint and right away realized the camera wouldn't cut it. The image quality and experience left me inclined to leave the phone in my pocket rather than catch a moment on camera. I returned it and bought a GS3, the camera on which I loved and used all the time, both confidently and happily. I switched to VZW and got the S4. Maybe I'm crazy, but the S4 camera left me disappointed more often than not and again I felt less inclined to take pictures. I sold it and bought the One. I don't use the camera as often as I used the S3, and I'm not sure why though many things are different now. Maybe most significant of those differences is the fact that my once newborn is now a very active toddler who is very difficult to capture on camera in general. However, and despite this, I generally don't have as much confidence/likelihood of use of the camera on the One as I did with the S3 and iP4s.
Not trying to hijack the thread, I just wanted to share my experience and a possible reason for the hesitance peopleare having with using their cameras.
So....I really really wanted to want the One. Stayed up watching YouTube reviews last night and finally thought "ok, I'm sold." I even went into a Verizon store today and messed with one for 30-40 min just to make sure...I wasn't feeling it, I wish I did. I think they tried to make the camera more user friendly and simplistic so the general public and iPhone users might be willing to give it a chance. I think it backfired. I kept thinking "Am I in video mode or photo..ok, zoe on/off got it. How do I...why can't I...where are my options? Is that all I can adjust?" I know there are 3rd party apps that are great and roms etc. I just feel like I'm able to do things on my stock Rezound without having to jump through so many hoops. I think the One's version of sense is more limiting than I prefer. I like my options. Some of you Mac users might understand what I mean: I have snow leopard and I refuse to use lion, mountain lion, or even the new free Mavericks.
I love the One's screen, form factor, the way the memory is basically just one partition (the Rezound has it split up into 3, it's very frustrating), speakers and how snappy and fast it is.
This is just my opinion, I hope it doesn't rub anyone the wrong way. I know how taboo it is to not like the newer sense versions, almost blasphemy! Don't chew my head off!

hey I think about how Sense 2.1 would run on the HTC One all the time, lol
Sense has changed in many ways for the better, and some for the worse.
Sense 5 is a great leap from 3.5/3.6 and 4.0+ IMHO, but I do miss 2.1
That was my favorite up until now. Sense 5.5 brings some amazing battery life.
I personally like.. NEVER use my camera, so to me a camera is the last thing I need working.
For someone with kids though, and wants to document things, or travels, I'd imagine it's the first thing on the list.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and yours is just that, yours.
What would you like to see? It won't do much of anything but I can make a new post on HTC Elevate about suggestions to change.

Oh cool, I actually just joined elevate about a week ago...I still haven't really taken the time to figure out how it works and what I can actually contribute but this seems like a whole other thread. Maybe you can pm me some tips if you get a chance, no pressure though. From what I've seen so far it doesn't seem like there's much to do on there but I haven't really looked into it to much. Thanks
Like 4.3 camera too
I honestly don't remember too much about the Sense 5.0 camera because shortly after I got my One I had it rooted and running CM 10.2. I run a used car lot so I'm constantly taking pictures of inventory for the various websites I post to. I have found the camera in HDR mode on CM to be fantastic. I had a 10MP regular 'point and shoot' camera that I retired because the photos from the One turn out so well. My guess is that people just have different expectations of what a CELL PHONE camera should produce. But if I was able to retire my regular camera, the One camera can't be that bad.

One suggestion for those that want a better camera is camera awesome. Its only a few bucks and gives you control over iso shutter speed and the like. Takes photos as good as sense. No Zoe but still a great app

My s3 was best phone camera. My ONE is pink, so much pink and focus is hit or miss. I'm on the fence between waiting for an update or sending it back to htc to fix. I use to take pictures daily, now it's just a frustrating disappointment.

Hello everyone, I'm currently using Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, and about to buy a new mobile, I've read about the HTC One M8, I liked it and planning to get it. All I need is to hear your opinions as users, does it worth its price? Any issues? Any advice? Any comment is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Best phone I've ever owned.
IMO it's still the best phone you can get
I could go on and on how good it is, so I'll keep it short:
One of the fastest phones available, awesome speakers, metal body feels nice and premium, definitely worth it.
Camera isn't bad at all - it just takes pics in lower resolution, so zooming might be problematic. Apart from that it's fun to use.
People say that the glacial silver variant is less slippery.
I've had m8 for 9 months now and it caused me no problems at all. I'm using it without case so the back is a bit scratched and top speaker is a bit more quiet than the other one due to contact with water, but still works.
It will definitely feel much, much better than your s3 mini.

I have read some opinions about the camera saying that there appears a purple color on bright areas, does that happen? And if so, does that happen a lot?

You will notice a big jump coming from my s3 mini. M8 has spoiled me a lot with speed and the quality of the phone; this is why I am staying with this phone over m9. I thought the m9 is not a big upgrade. Hopefully HTC get back to where they were with m10.
The camera of the phone is decent but then again I rarely take any pictures on a phone. The performance, sound and the build quality is top notch.

One reason I didn't go with the M9 is the Snapdragon 810 and its overheating issue. However, I don't know if it exists in the M9.

No no, I didn't mean the M8, I meant that I didn't take the M9 in my considerations because of the Snapdragon 810 issue (However, I'm not sure it exists on it, the M9 not the M8).

I never experienced that, although I read a review where it's pointed out it happens in bright, contrast areas.

M9 had a much higher temperature under stress than other phones, but htc has fixed it - basically what they did is make thermal throttling kick in faster and be more agressive.

I'd say it does happen sometimes, but not a lot. I also think it somewhat subject to personal opinion and taste. Its never really bothered me, but apparently it bothers some (probably not most) folks. Honestly, its the type of thing I wouldn't have given any thought, if I hadn't seen it discussed here. To me, its just how the camera is tuned to depict certain colors and light levels. No camera truly captures colors the exact same way your eyes do. Although I'll buy the argument that some cameras (phones) capture it better than others.
I take a lot of pics with my phone. I have over 1000 on my phone right now. Just scrolling through the first few hundred, I see maybe 4 or 5 shots that look purple.
Also, flesh tones can appear a bit overly "pink" in some lighting conditions. But again, its somewhat a matter of personal taste how much you will even notice. And like the "purple" issue, its much more the exception than the rule, at least IMO.

Well, I don't use the camera so much, but I wanted to get an overview of all the device's pros and cons.
For sure, the M8's camera is not the best out there, and there may be a lot of better options (regarding the camera), but I don't think I will complain about it as I said before that I'm not a big camera user. I saw many good and nice pictures taken using it, so I'm going with your opinion that it's an exception, not the rule.

I'd even debate the fact there are many better options for camera phone; at least "better" in all conditions. While others may have higher resolution and better clarity in daylight; M8 outperforms many of them in low-light.
