A favor to ask - regarding camera - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Can someone PLEASE install vignette and try taking a photo with the stock camera and vignette?
I want to see if the compression and artifacting is software sourced....
I am so torn with regards to my next phone, and I have heard insanely amazing things about the One, but I am also a pretty avid mobile photographer and really appreciate a better than average camera....
Let me know if you try this and if you can, post the results?

Assuming the Vignette Demo (free version) would suffice?

Don't think so, demo might not have full quality.

I have the full version. But its dark now. Do you need a daylight picture?

I honestly wouldn't go with the HTC One or the GS4 if you want a great mobile camera. Where the HTC One excels in average light and low-light, it is awful outdoors, and the 4MP's aren't anything extraordinary either. The iPhone5 has a slightly better camera than the One, and the 5S should be getting released in less than a month. I honestly hate referring you to the iPhone because it sucks everywhere else against Android. The 5S should be a getting a slightly improved camera which would put it as a good bit better than the One's camera. The GS4's camera isn't better than the One, but it does do better in bright lighting/outdoors and has a better MP count.
It is possible that the HTC One Max being released soon might be getting a better "Ultrapixel" camera than our non-phablet One's. Maybe look into that? Or the iPhone5S. I can't imagine the Nexus 5 being released in a few months would have a much better camera than last years Nexus, and not to mention it likely won't be on Verizon.
Also, the Moto X's camera is god awful.

Isn't odd to anyone else that you can't get the holy trifecta of build/update/camera on one phone these days? I am almost getting to that point where I am paranoid that there's been a backroom agreement between manufacturers to only have 1 or 2 out of 3....

Basically if you combined the iPhone5 and the HTC One specs and took the best of each, you would have the best mobile phone camera available. I tried out the Lumia 1020, not impressed in the slightest.

I have an HTC One and an iPhone 5 and I like the photos on the HTC One better. Although it could be the 1080p screen that's tricking me.
I have vignette and will take a stock camera + vignette pic shortly

I am inclined to agree. though, for my hands I'd prefer a 5 inch screen

The Sony i1 is being announced next week. G lens 20mp camera, expandable memory, etc. Might be worth waiting to see what they announce.

I agree with this completely. HTC got nearly everything right except for the camera. I'm hoping that the next iteration has slightly less bezel (think Moto X form factor) and a camera on par to whatever the 5S will have. If so, I'll be buying one at full price to replace this HTC One.

Ok I have taken 2 pictures, one with the stock camera and one with the Vignette camera. How would you like to see them? They're not the best pictures because it was lightly raining and I didn't want to get my phone wet so I was trying to keep the phone under the eve of my roof.

Why the doubt? There has been at least one Sony Android phones on Verizon before.

We also need to consider another factor. A camera is only as good as the photographer using it. I am by no means a professional yet in have seen great pictures and taken great pics with the HTC one that I would put up against the gs4 or the iPhone 5(I have owned all 3). The HTC one has many more options than either one of those cameras when it comes to exposure, shutter, white balance, etc. The camera editor is also great on this phone. If you use the correct scene it also helps a bunch as well.
Unless we are talking about enlarging the pic bigger than a 4x6 or 5x7 then that's where the One would fail and the GS4 or ip5 would clearly succeed. As far as posting to Facebook or instagram etc the one will be great .

just embed them in this thread?

Not a great morning here, cloudy/foggy, but heres a shot from both stock and vignette, respectively. Also attached a zip of the 2 since the pics would be altered due to size limits. The 'brighter' one (also taken fist, check filename) is the stock. Didn't get Vignette to focus well, and can only take 3.1M images, was on "superfine" with no filter.

For some reason Vignette can only capture up to 3.1MP on the HTC One, plus it doesn't do HDR either. I find it best to use the stock camera with HDR and then share with Vignette for the filters I want to apply. The photo comes out better than just using Vignette straight.

if i used them yeah thats what you would have to do. HTC has an odd camera and pixel count, so i'm not surprised Vignette doesn't properly support it. They've always been good about resolving issues though, so theres hope.

Camera quality sucks compared to iphone

I travel and use my phone to scan documents, and my camera is suppose to be better than the iphones, it sucks, there is no way I get as good an image as my friends iphone does, whats the problem?
Actually closer to useless as a scanner.

bashing the camera yes, not the phone, yes I am rooted running stock rom, I have not messed much with the settings, have you tried taking a picture of a document and see how good of a scan you get?
I will look at the setting, but I have my doubts that I will ever get as good an image as the iphone.
Seriously HTC get it together, I should not have to carry an additional scanner.

What app are you using? or are you just taking pictures and uploading them?
I have both the iphone 3GS and my Inc 2. I also have access to an iphone 4 and 4S and I have to say that the inc 2 camera is on par with the 4S camera which is supposed to have the best optics out of all the iphones.
I can post up results too if you like? Are you sure your lens isn't smudged? or possibly defective?
IPhone 4s and dinc2 both have 8mp cameras bro. Adjust your settings I know that when I was running stock 8mp wasn't the default

I am not using any program just taking a picture, after all that's what my buddy does with his phone.
Maybe I will go by the Verizon store and see if the phone they have does better than mine.
My buddy had the iphone 4, and now has the 4S, and I have to say the document picture taken with the Dinc is no good at all.

I have not compared the quality of pictures, just images of documents, if I am trying to focus binoculars, of cameras, I focus on trying to read something, but in this case I need the documents to mail them in PDF format after printing them.
I'd have to agree that the iphone 4s does have better picture quality. It is newer hardware after all. The dinc2 camera works perfectly for me though. You have to remember it's a phone with a camera, not a camera with a phone.

To be honest you're never going to get the quality of a scanner from your phone, and indoor lighting is generally terrible as shown here.
I'll take a pic using the iphone 4S tonight and post it. I'm going to redo all 3 that way we can have a test with similar variables.

I think you need to adjust your metering in settings. I'm able to do that on cm7 not sure if its an option with the stock camera app, but the consensus is that the sense camera is better than the aosp camera. When metering mode is changed from center weighted to frame average on cm7 i get no focal spot blur like i do in a shot with center weight metering.
Maybe someone with a sense camera can chime in on what metering options are available with it but changing that might help your focal blur on documents

Why HTC, why?????

I dont understand if the one x is supposed to be "flagship" then why does the titan II have a 16mp camera? I know quite a few people that base their smartphone purchase on the camera, most of them like the One because of the android OS but none of us understand why the supposed flagship phone got the dookie end of the stick? Why would HTC waste a 16mp camera on a Windows phone?
That's it, I'm getting a Galaxy note.... Wasn't sure before but I'm not a fan of non-removable batteries or sd cards but IMO that camera decision was kinda bunk...
get a nokia if you're into MP porn

Oh, before you go....what was your point exactly? Is it that the best camera is one with the highest number of megapixels?

Quality of the camera , software and function are more important than just resolution.
Megapixel is just a number doesn't mean it has a better camera. I think one x's image processing is still better than titan 2.

Now now Guys - I am sure we can all get along.
Here you go mate:
http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-808-pureview
I am sure your world will be a lot better if you go higher MPs.
Megapixels are just a number. They have NOTHING to do with the quality of the picture.
Megapixels have to do with the SIZE of the picture. With an 8 megapixel camera you're already shooting photos with 6 million more pixels than a FULL HD monitor.
8 megapixel camera res: 3264x2448 = 7990272pix
Full HD monitor res : 1920*1080 = 2073800pix
Titan II 16 MP Camera Res = ~16000000pix
There is currently no display in the consumer world that uses 16 MILLION pixels.
The only benefit in larger megapixel cameras is microsampling and downsizing to create the illusion of maybe a crisper image, zoom in? And it's mediocre at best.
The quality of the shots are determined by the sensors, ISO, image processor, etc etc.
NOT MEGAPIXELS.
/rant
P.S. Have fun with your mediocre display and overall, outdated Galaxy Note.
WOW....
What a bunch of beautiful people we have here... LMAO! I would like to think that a higher MP camera with the same software and as is on the One X would be the better camera... I understand the point about MP being just a #.... So you're telling me that if the One X had a 16mp camera it would make no difference?
And although I respect being loyal to your phone of choice there really is no call to come here and act like a douchebag and respond like this. It's not like I called your phone a steaming pile and I didn't post here to start any sh%#, I was just trying to figure out why HTC would do this and how others felt about it?
Happy Easter...
The main thing that changes the quality of the picture is the amount of light the sensor lets in. The backside illuminated f/2.0 aperture allows for more light to come in and therefore better performance in low light. The f/2.2 in the Titan II does not have that luxury. That f/2.0 aperture is one of the main reasons the camera on this phone is so great, aside from ImageSense.
All douchebaggery aside, we're just trying to make you realize that it's not all in the mega-pixels.
It's all about the Mega Pixies....
Okay...
Thanks....
Just felt like I was under attack, like I insulted someones mom and it made me think of why I quit using certain RoM's; because some of the people on the boards would come out acting all hard talking smack from the safety of the internet and try to make you look stupid for asking genuine questions. I just have no stomach for that behavior, no matter how "stupid" the question.
I work in production for a marketing company and we always use/ask for the largest image possible because it's easier to shrink and image and make it look stellar than it is to blow one up so, to me, a higher MP camera might be a bigger draw... I guess I need to hyper explain myself next time or else suffer the consequences. LOL
Either way, thanks those of you that weighed in and didn't blow a gasket....
Suppose we can delete this thread now..
All that aside, I still feel you'd be happier with a One X than a Galaxy Note, given you could get over the non-removable battery and sd slot.

either way, your question "Why would HTC waste a 16mp camera on a Windows phone?" was addressed in the wrong forum.
I have been through several Gnotes, and the HTC camera on the OneX is much better IMHO - so, even without the 16MP, you will still be coming up short. I really loved the Note, but it was just too big. For me the size was it's greatest aspect, and it biggest shortcoming (if that makes sense).
you got me....
"Why would HTC waste a 16mp camera on a Windows phone?" was a rhetorical question and wasn't the main point of my post. I was more addressing that if the One X was supposed to be the flagship phone why not make it a flagship phone and put a bigger camera and why not a bigger battery while we're at it.
Then it turned into a "torch the doofus that is concerned with the # of MP" thread. So if a question about the cameras MP on the One X not belonging in the "One X General" forum then I apologize and ask humbly for forgiveness...
But...
I get the feeling that you are trying to validate yourself for being rude? Or curt, which ever you like. So if it's in the wrong place flag it, move it or better yet ignore it... Hey, "ignoring it", now there's an idea I can get behind.

I am shy of HTC battery to begin with so the non removable is a bit scary... My experience with HTC and their battery life is not good but before a spare battery on the go was a nice option. The camera looks great and I have always been happy with HTC as far as that goes. Taking pictures while shooting video is a stellar option because I shoot a lot of video and not having to grab stills at home on the PC sounds great, but running out of space or juice to shoot would render that all moot...
It's the size and S pen that I like about the Note, the 2500 battery is nice too... I will keep reading these forums and jumping around the ol youtube till I get in the store for my own "Hands on" testing.
Thanks for the reply!

Please for the love of gawd, delete this thread! I had no idea.... This is classic.
The one x camera is very good, nicer stills and faster autofocus than the note / s2. Lack of memory card slot isn't an issue when images can go straight to dropbox either.
Also, being a long time dslr user and understand very well the importance of lens & sensor size v megapixel count. 8mp on a good sensor means you don't have to make the images smaller to make them crisper, I have plenty of 5mp images that, when printed, are very similar quality to those obtained from my old 5d and now, d7000. Good choice of lens and adequate light are more important than mp count. Fwiw, the one x lens appears to be well above average for a phone and better than many point and shoots .
Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the read, as a photographer I'm still on the fence after reading it though. I already knew all about the sensors etc. If they had just found a way to maybe use a larger lens and squeeze in a 6 or 8mp sensor I'd have gotten the One a long time ago.
And just to help contribute to some digital photography knowledge: a 6mp camera translates into about an 8x10 print without having any loss in photo quality.

As a photographer, I'm surprised that a phone camera would be a breaking point for your purchase. There is currently no phone on the market that is of enough quality to reliably provide pictures for anything other than social media and email transfer.

Well I wouldn't use my phone camera for a job, I'm not saying that all. Maybe it's more the perfectionist in me than the photographer? I've been pretty happy with my Rezounds macro capability and I like having a little wiggle room for cropping. I'm not sure if I can upload a full res example, but maybe that's for the best. It might be seen as bragging or potentially argumentative and that's not my intention. It's also the lack of microSD memory card, and non-removable battery stuff, you know. I'm probably getting one pretty soon anyway though. My phone has started acting up. I'm just one of those people, indecisive and hesitant for the most part (nothing to be proud of).

I use a high end DSLR for most pictures I take, but when I want a quick picture of something, I don't find the HTC One camera experience enjoyable at all. I don't enjoy the process of using the camera, and I generally don't enjoy the end result.
Maybe I'm just spoiled because I have an amazing DSLR, but personally, I have found the camera to be the weakest part of the HTC One.

I think it's safe to say that many of us use DSLR's for our most important pictures and I doubt anyone expects the camera of the phone to be either a replacement for a DSLR or nearly as good. I use my One mostly for pics and videos of my kids when it's the only camera I have on me. As long as the pics are clear and natural looking, I'm pretty happy. The most disappointing aspect of the camera to me is actually the camcorder. I agree the camera is the weakest aspect of the HTC One, but with such a great device otherwise, this doesn't mean I think the camera is bad by any means.
On another note, I'm surprised by the users who have said 4.3 has offered no improvement in camera performance. My pictures look much better since updating.

I agree with using the One when it's the only camera I have, same here. However, I don't know what it is, but I just find myself not even bothering taking pictures with my phone anymore since I've gotten the one. I was using an iPhone 5 for almost a year before the One (alongside a GS3), and I wouldn't hesitate to whip out my phone and take a quick picture. But since I've gotten the One, a lot of times I think "Hey! I should take a picture!" then I just... don't feel like it. I can't pinpoint it exactly. I take probably 1/10th the amount of pictures with my phone than I used to. And I LOVE photography.
I feel that such an amazing phone should have an equally amazing camera, but for me, it leaves something to be desired.

This is a really interesting point and I think I somewhat agree. While owning an iPhone 4s, I snapped pictures all the time. Many of these were of my newborn in good lighting so image quality was generally very good. When I decided to go back to Android, I decided camera quality, ease of camera use, and likelihood of camera use were all very important considerations. I bought the HTC One EVO on Sprint and right away realized the camera wouldn't cut it. The image quality and experience left me inclined to leave the phone in my pocket rather than catch a moment on camera. I returned it and bought a GS3, the camera on which I loved and used all the time, both confidently and happily. I switched to VZW and got the S4. Maybe I'm crazy, but the S4 camera left me disappointed more often than not and again I felt less inclined to take pictures. I sold it and bought the One. I don't use the camera as often as I used the S3, and I'm not sure why though many things are different now. Maybe most significant of those differences is the fact that my once newborn is now a very active toddler who is very difficult to capture on camera in general. However, and despite this, I generally don't have as much confidence/likelihood of use of the camera on the One as I did with the S3 and iP4s.
Not trying to hijack the thread, I just wanted to share my experience and a possible reason for the hesitance peopleare having with using their cameras.
So....I really really wanted to want the One. Stayed up watching YouTube reviews last night and finally thought "ok, I'm sold." I even went into a Verizon store today and messed with one for 30-40 min just to make sure...I wasn't feeling it, I wish I did. I think they tried to make the camera more user friendly and simplistic so the general public and iPhone users might be willing to give it a chance. I think it backfired. I kept thinking "Am I in video mode or photo..ok, zoe on/off got it. How do I...why can't I...where are my options? Is that all I can adjust?" I know there are 3rd party apps that are great and roms etc. I just feel like I'm able to do things on my stock Rezound without having to jump through so many hoops. I think the One's version of sense is more limiting than I prefer. I like my options. Some of you Mac users might understand what I mean: I have snow leopard and I refuse to use lion, mountain lion, or even the new free Mavericks.
I love the One's screen, form factor, the way the memory is basically just one partition (the Rezound has it split up into 3, it's very frustrating), speakers and how snappy and fast it is.
This is just my opinion, I hope it doesn't rub anyone the wrong way. I know how taboo it is to not like the newer sense versions, almost blasphemy! Don't chew my head off!

hey I think about how Sense 2.1 would run on the HTC One all the time, lol
Sense has changed in many ways for the better, and some for the worse.
Sense 5 is a great leap from 3.5/3.6 and 4.0+ IMHO, but I do miss 2.1
That was my favorite up until now. Sense 5.5 brings some amazing battery life.
I personally like.. NEVER use my camera, so to me a camera is the last thing I need working.
For someone with kids though, and wants to document things, or travels, I'd imagine it's the first thing on the list.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and yours is just that, yours.
What would you like to see? It won't do much of anything but I can make a new post on HTC Elevate about suggestions to change.

Oh cool, I actually just joined elevate about a week ago...I still haven't really taken the time to figure out how it works and what I can actually contribute but this seems like a whole other thread. Maybe you can pm me some tips if you get a chance, no pressure though. From what I've seen so far it doesn't seem like there's much to do on there but I haven't really looked into it to much. Thanks
Like 4.3 camera too
I honestly don't remember too much about the Sense 5.0 camera because shortly after I got my One I had it rooted and running CM 10.2. I run a used car lot so I'm constantly taking pictures of inventory for the various websites I post to. I have found the camera in HDR mode on CM to be fantastic. I had a 10MP regular 'point and shoot' camera that I retired because the photos from the One turn out so well. My guess is that people just have different expectations of what a CELL PHONE camera should produce. But if I was able to retire my regular camera, the One camera can't be that bad.

One suggestion for those that want a better camera is camera awesome. Its only a few bucks and gives you control over iso shutter speed and the like. Takes photos as good as sense. No Zoe but still a great app

My s3 was best phone camera. My ONE is pink, so much pink and focus is hit or miss. I'm on the fence between waiting for an update or sending it back to htc to fix. I use to take pictures daily, now it's just a frustrating disappointment.

[Q] Further Camera updates? HTC or Devs?

Since the .15/.17 updates, we have seen a modest improvement in camera quality, furthermore, the RAW mode has shown that the sensor and lens combination can take some decent shots, even in low light
(look here) http://www.anandtech.com/show/9211/a-quick-look-at-one-m9-raw-photos
Now, yes, we could all just shoot in raw and learn how to correct the profiles, but, simply put, we shouldn't have to.
It is evident that HTC's jpgs are not being processed well, resulting in poor images.
I've tweeted HTC to ask if there are further improvements coming, and I didn't get a real response. Does anyone in the know have details as to whether they have committed to continue working on their JPGs, or will this have to go to one of the hardworking devs here to do something about?
Personally i've found HTC jpeg shots look better than RAW, and even in the photo's you've linked it's better in JPEG to be fair.
The S6 and iphone don't impress me either.
All the shots are awful, so I wouldn't use any of them as low light or night time shooters.
I wouldn't expect too much more in the way of improvements and if this phone's camera isn't good enough for you, i'd give up and sell it because they're all much of a muchness and no substitute for an Ultrapixel or proper camera.
Would love to see ANY update. When is it coming to europe and Sweden? Hate waiting....
I don't know what to tell you, then. The S6 and the iPhone are pretty much the gold standard for camera phones right now, and to call them awful is pure hyperbole. You might be a pro photographer and prefer a DSLR or pro gear, but even a pro photographer would be able to know what the intended use were for camera phones and not resort to calling them "awful" when they're clearly quite good for what they are.
The HTC camera, however, is simply horrendous. For simple point & shoot operation, this is damn near unusable indoors, and much worse than my Nexus 5, which is generally regarded to have a pretty bad camera. HTC **** the bed on their processing, and need to put some engineers towards improving this before it hurts them even more. Fortunately, this CAN be done over an OTA, but somehow I doubt it will.

There isn't any perfect phone out there, but easy there I think the HTC M9 camera is great if you know how to tweak the exposure, contrast, and saturation. Maybe you should have a look on how to fox it

As I said, for POINT & SHOOT operation, this phone is absolutely awful. Like 99% of the population, I do not want, nor should I need, to tweak any settings to make the phone usable as a camera. Should manually adjusting the camera take BETTER pictures than point and shoot? Sure. But using the camera right out of the box should take semi decent pictures, not the blurry, pixelated mess that HTC's software produces. Saying "Oh, it'll work fine as soon as you adjust the contrast, exposure, saturation, etc etc etc" is NOT something that will work for the general public.
So don't call a camera phone awful, but it is ok to call one horrendous. Lol. My wife has the Note 4 and before that she had the Note 2. We have had other Samsung phones in the past. Her phone does take a slight better pics than mine, but let's not exaggerate it. For those spur of the moment memories, texts, and social media, my phone does just fine. I have found iPhones do produce really nice photos, but my understanding has been that Apple does a little extra with the processing and the end result is not a natural photo.

I've had the S6, it's quite adept at taking pictures. It's not DSLR quality, but as far as camera phones go, it's at the top for sure. Meanwhile, every single point & shoot picture out of the M9 comes out a pixelated mess.
I never said don't call a camera phone awful. I said you simply cannot take the gold standard out there and say it takes awful pictures. It's simply inaccurate. Meanwhile, for point & shoot, the M9 certainly is a poor performer.

Like I said. I did comparisons and I don't see where it is that bad. I don't know how much better a S6 camera is than a Note 4, but I doubt it is that great. But I guess it could be.

I think a fair few of us in this thread agree that the M9 's hardware is CAPABLE of making some good shots, comparable to other flagships on the market. However, to GET to that point, it requires Manual intervention (or RAW). This is ok for 80% of the time, but when you have a short time to take a shot, it certainly falls short of other options.
This thread isn't to argue the semantics, rather asking what everything thinks is the next step for our camera, whether anyone in the know can share whether HTC will continue working on making the AUTO + JPGs better, or whether the notion that they will work on the camera was just a tick box action, and now we've had a small update, it is up to the independent devs to improve.

Turbo 2 Camera Software

I've been going back and forth between the the Turbo 2 and the LG V10 for my next phone and one of the things that I'm torn on is the Camera. Even though the MP count on the Turbo is higher, all the "showdown's" I've seen on the camera seem to show better images coming from the V10. Do you guys think it's the Camera or the software? Have any of you tried any of the 3rd party camera software that helps get better images out of the T2?

I forgot to try (stock was good for me) ProCapture. This app works the best on my old phone (Razr HD). You may also try Camera/Cinema FV-5 and A Better Camera.
I have used most of the third party apps for the turbo 2. I typically end up coming back to the stock camera app for convenience of the double twist action. Unless doing a time lapse photo or photosphere, 90% of photos taken are on the stock app. That's not to say the stock camera has downfalls, LG's photo software is infinitely better in terms of there manual modes and ability to customize the picture settings. I have taken some awesome pictures on the turbo 2, but the camera could have definitely benefitted from manual mode in certain circumstances.

I absolutely hate moto's touch to shoot feature. I want to touch to focus, then push another button to shoot. For this reason I use Google Camera. No complaints at all... All pics have been stellar and my friends all love the pics I get w my camera.
That being said, I really am not a photo guy. If i take a couple pics when I am out, that is a lot for me. Someone who uses the camera more or in more diverse situations might have a different opinion. Coming from the Maxx, though, this camera is lightyears better.
that is one thing that annoyed me when playing with it in store. The inability to pick an area that should be the focus like in the LG software. The native software seems TOO simple and needs a "pro" mode.

Exactly. A lot of times I want to tell it where focus should be made. There is a "touch to focus" mode (or at least there was on previous motos), but it sucks at best

The maxx got a bad rap. Sure it wasn't the best, but honestly I don't see a major difference between the two.
Will the Control focus/Exposure ring give you the choice of where you want the camera to focus, etc? I use that feature a lot.

I'm in the same boat. Been burned by Motorola a lot of times. A lot of bad cameras and the software is still not that great. All of the reviews favor V10 camera but the experience is better on T2 since it is stock with perfect amount of customization. Maybe a little less, but it gets the job done.
One has giant battery, one has reviews that tell you that it does in a day, easily. Sometimes less than a day for V10. You have to remember that V10 is 808 vs. 810. 810 may have heating and throttle issues, but it is a superior chip and may process the pics better if you find a good camera app.
In the end, it is a toss up, IMHO. That's why I'm thinking about Note 5 too.
I will say, the discount of trading ANY smartphone in for $200 credit increases the appeal of the T2 considerably. The broken screen Thunderbolt sitting here getting me $200 off is very tempting!

Right now the phone is $100 + they have the "UPGRADE" code for an extra $100 + the $200 Trade-in. I have my Thunderbolt that is 2 phones back that I cracked the screen on but it still fires up, and I have a Galaxy Nexus so I'm probably going to trade those 2 in for one for me and one for my wife. I've got a G2 but I'm keeping it to either sell it or keep as a back-up or video server (My Galaxy nexus right now acts as a link to my slingbox and netflix that I throw to my TV through Chrome so the G2 may move to that position).

If you enable the little focus/exposure ring in the Moto camera software, it allows you to adjust where the camera is focusing on. And since the focus itself is so fast, it's just as good as tap-to-focus.
On another note, can anybody suggest a good 3rd party app with manual mode and/or one that can shoot in raw mode? Those are the only 2 things I'm missing from the Moto camera app. Also, is it possible to set the double twist gesture to another camera app?
Afaik, Moto doesn't support the latest camera API (to get raw). Not sure is it corrected with MM.
Just testing several camera apps, unfortunately ProCapture is not supported anymore, Manual Camera (same dev) requires new API, Focal is not supported... but Open Camera works really well! And doesn't have limitation for 4K video recording. Definitely dev deserve donations

I decided against the dt2 until I realized I could get it for $124 on black Friday. Had it not been for that, I'd still be happily rocking my g3 waiting for next year's phones.
Buddy just got a V10. I have the T2 and almost got a V10. The Shatterproof warranty and now added SD card swept me to the T2. And the "design a new one at any time" feature of the 64GB one. Brand new phone 12 months from now? That's cool as hell.
But I gotta say... the V10 is very nice. The camera is just SICK. Even the front facer is really nice. Very impressive. I'm still happy with my T2... I suppose. No case is really nice.
But I would certainly have been more then happy with that V10 even with the LG Bloat....

I carry a LG G2 now so I'm used to the LG software and I actually disabled and hid almost all of it. If I really want, I can always use load up Nova Launcher or one of the others.
The things that draw me to the DT2 are the same things you're saying. TOUGHT phone with no need for a case and a free "refresh" at any time. The biggest things I like about LG are the camera (and the camera software) and the back buttons and tap features.
