[Q] Sprint Epic 4G user thinking of switching to S3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I am a long time Epic 4G user. Rooted the phone, used several different ROMs and have loved it. It is on its last legs right now and am thinking of switching to the S3. Couple of questions:
1) I love the slide out keyboard and that is my biggest concern. I do use Swype a lot as well but having the keyboard is something I enjoyed. Is that hard to get used to, not having one?
2) I am in Los Angeles and it doesn't look like 4G LTE is there yet. I get 4G (not LTE) now, will that change with a new phone (it gets slower?)
3) The wireless tether is a feature I use a lot to get my laptop on the internet away from home. I assume that is still available if I root this phone as well?
4) Maybe a silly question but can I transfer my data from games like Angry Birds? I do a titanium backup to my SD card on my Epic 4G.
5) I assume I can buy spare batteries and all of that like I did for my Epic 4G too.
Think that is about it. Thanks for any info you can share!

1. I haven't found I missed it and not too many complaints that I've seen.
2. No 4g until Network Vision hits your area.
3. Wireless tether is available.
4. You can try but be prepared that you could get data corruption since it's different phones and OS version and such.
5. Who needs spare batteries with this beast?

Everything that ^ he said. So be prepared to be stuck on 3g. You'll have to find out when LA is getting LTE

I have upgraded to GS3 from Epic and dont look back. Mostly i am impressed with battery life. Although the latest build in my opinion drains a bit quicker but still good. So my suggestion is : pull the trigger.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

I used CM9 on my Epic and use AOSP on my GS3 now, feels the same only faster
I missed the keyboard at first, I still kinda do for the special keys and capitalizing letters and such... but other than that it's not too big of a change... the bigger screen makes it much easier to type.
I've restored some data for apps (angry birds included) from my Epic to my GS3 without any issue using Titanium Backup.
I was using an expanded battery in my Epic and I still get more life out of my GS3 than I did on my Epic... so the stock battery should be fine.

Thanks everyone. I think the 4G thing could be a pain though. I will have to see when LA is getting it. Not like it is a big city or anything.

I can agree alot with alot of this users here as well, ive also upgraded to the SGS3 from my epic 4G, and ive been loving this phone ever since, now like everyone else said, u wont be able to get 4g due to the fact that the new HPDSA+ or something like that doesnt support basic 4g only LTE 4G so ull be stuck with 3G untill vision hits our neightborhood, not a big deal, im useto using the 3G and ofcourse i got Wifi at home to download does huge files it has.
Althought ive also loved the external keyboard that came with the epic im not desapointed that it doesnt have it on the sg3, it would look as sexy as it does now if it did have the keyboard, besides ive found that i can type just as fast if not better with the software keyboard, so i dont miss it.
Yes u can do wireless tethering by rooting still works. now with transfering ure files its not recommended by u can try specially since the SGS3 doesnt support the ability to trasfer files from ure phone to the ext memory card so ure stuck installing everything to ure phone. Now ive found a nice tweak which ive used personally and found it to be great which is called sd2internal2extsd which lets u swap ure external sdcard with ure internal memory and use ure external to install all ure programs files and games etc.....like i did, i got the 16gig SGS3 bought a 64gig ultra mobile class 10 memory card and been rocking it ever since on my new 64 gig SGS3 awesome, saved me 200 dollars. (I bought my SD card on amazon for a great deal)
battery issue isnt as bad as it was with the epic years, where ud have to change it every 5 hours or so if u where lucky, witht he Galaxy S3 it will last u all day or upto 6 hours at the most if ure a heavy user, if u root and install a custom rom with battery saver features on it ure phone will last u all day if not more. If u get the SGS3 trust me ure gonna be loving this phone.

who came from the evo

so i was wondering how many of you guys came from the evo 4g, and what you guys like over the evo other than the amoled screen of coarse that is a no brainer, how the battery life been treating you so far i record it to be about the same 6 to 7 hours wish i could get more i might be upgrading to a bigger battery soon.
i'm actually wondering about switching in the other direction.
i know at least on paper, epic is a better device.
but it seems like evo owners are having more fun with their devs.
no knock on our devs... (thank you to all)
i know that they are working hard.
i was thinking about picking up an evo on ebay/craigslist... and playing around with it. any one on the fence?
Nope. Lack of a download mode kills it for me. I've already bricked my phone once with a bad flash. Thanks to a download mode, I was able to recover with ease using Odin. I don't think I would ever use a phone without one now, provided there was an option to get one with one.
That and the news on HTC phone logs that are easily viewable by others is a little shady. Shame on HTC!
I agree with the development very high seriously about 40 flashable roms downsise I hate sense love the g.b based rom cynogen etc... how ever I have noticed the super quick os versious evo just feels smoother even at 1 ghz plus evo highest o.c is 1.2 and I have seen 1.6 so I am happy with the change just need to figure out how to get better batt life cause it sux but again so does the evo

Came from EVO 4G. Missing nandroid and the plethora of ROMs that were available for that device. The only reason I chose the Epic Touch over the 3D was for the extra memory. The screen is nice on this device but the resolution lacks behind the competition and I don't really care for the oversaturated look. Looks like both phones are "obsolete" anyway as we never got 4G in Detroit and it looks like we never will. I was really tempted to get the Motorola since I do travel occasionally and it would have been nice to have GSM capability. The lack of a gyro on that bothered me though since I like playing with google sky. It was pretty erratic running on the EVO 4G without the gyro.
Anyway I'm looking forward to the experience.

[Q] Epic 4G Touch 4G and Tethering?

Hello, XDA friends(to be!)
I'm thinking of buying the Epic Touch 4G next week following the death (may it rest in peace) of my old EVO 4g.
I've been reading reviews, looked up how to increase the resolution, checked into rooting it.. so on and so forth. I've rooted my old phone and my boyfriend's phone so i'm not too worried about the process.
One question I haven't been able to get answered is the quality of the 4G on the phone.
For example, I use my 4G internet on my EVO pretty much daily. I travel in the dallas area alot and tether it with my laptop for work. I was very pleased with the consistent quality of the 4G radio on the EVO
Is the 4G radio on the Epic Touch 4G any good? Can I rely on it for my tethering needs? I'm hoping for -at least- similar quality to my old EVO.. I heard of the LOS problems, but with sprint just releasing a (mostly) fix for the issue, i'm not too worried. Worst case, I can find a custom ROM that helps with the issue.
TL;DR
Is the 4G radio any good?
Do the standard Wireless tethering apps work?
Will I NEED a custom ROM to deal with LOS/Signal quality in general/Tethering?
thanks guys!

The radio is average.
Yes all the standard tethering apps work (provided you're rooted)
No. Just update the firmware. I haven't had LoS since Ek02.
If you do go ahead and pull the trigger on the ET4G Load a custom ROM for sure as this phone is pretty bloated with crappy software. I highly suggest Culkulin's 2.8.1 ROM and it's probably doubled my battery life as well as sped up the phone considerably. Also the Sprint Hotspot feature is unlocked so the only other tether app I use is Android Wired Tether (wired tether for root users).
.
Thanks!
I can deal with "Average.".
Any chance anyone is a current E4GT user who used to be an EVO 4g user and can compare?
Glad to hear tethering apps work fine. I'm having a hard time getting a working one for my boyfriend's EVO 3D. I've gone through like 9 different versions.
I'm currently considering the Blazer ROM, I really like its style. I will look into the one you suggested though.
Thanks so much!

As a recent Evo4G user (about 3 weeks ago), I offer the simple (because I'm at work) opinion of "hell yes!". For the reasons of: screen, CPU/gpu, storage, and weirdly enough... Touchwiz! (screw Sense, seriously. I thought I would miss it. Not one bit.) And like mentioned previous, the Los issues are no more. If you got good 4G on your evo, you'll get just as good on the E4GT. So tethering should be no issue at all.
And there are quite a few roms around, considering the age of the phone. (and rumored ICS in the near future)
The Evo4G seems clunky now. You'll see.
Sent from my calculator watch.
Thanks you guys! Y'all rock. I'm getting the phone.. ordering today!
I disagree with the 4g radio being average on the Epic. I had both original Epic n Evo 4g and I'm currently rocking the upgraded models. The Evo has better radios in total but the 4g radio on the Epic is superior. Where I get three bars on the Epic the Evo would have two and where the Evo would lose connection the Epic would stay locked to its one bar. Also the Evo also does this thing that when you put your hand on it the signal drops one bar of it's 4g. I'll post a picture when I can of both phones side by side connected to 4G so you can see what I mean..

[Q/Advice) upgrade from Evo 4g

Has anyone currently on the Galaxy S II previsouly came from using the Evo 4g? I am thinking about updating to this one, I have my upgrade but im pretty happy with the evo 4g and the development its recieved the past years..
But I wanted to get input if someone has switched from my phone to this and the pro's and con's..
I'd appreciate any input!
I came from the EVO 4G to the EVO 3D to the galaxy SII. Honestly I would go with the EVO 3D. I gave mine to my wife and think I will switch my phone back with her. Sense is just so far superior an interface it is enough to make me hate using my galaxy SII. If I could get sense on this phone it would be awesome.
Thanks for the reply, Sense is good, uses a lot of battery life. What launcher is most comonly used for galaxy s2??
I came from the EVO 4G and I have to say I love this phone. I thought I was a sense fiend but once I go this phone I like not having it. It just seems snappier without it. And once we get a full ICS rom I won't miss sense at all.

You mean what launcher does it come with or what launcher do we prefer to install from the market? Touchwiz is a lot less intrusive than sense and i prefer ADW launcher but all other ones are great options. I still use my evo 3d since it has great development but this device is far more superior than both the evo/evo 3d that it really isn't a bad choice.

If you like the big screen of the EVO 4g, then you'll love the screen of the ET4g. I had the evo3d, it seemed really small the radio is very weak. It was the only phone that has had no signal in side my house. I felt the build quality was sub par also with the evo3d also. Just my opinion.
Here is my 2 cents.
Pros...e4gt brighter screen, smoother operation (no lag), much easier I think to root and customize. Better battery life and much more pros I know I'm missing
Con...radio....the radio signal sucks compared to evo. If you are in an area that your evo gets 2 bars your lucky on the Samsung to get one or have signal at all....could be different for you in your area.
This has been a few of the items I have noticed about the 2 phones.

I came from the Evo 4G and this phone by far out does the Evo. Speed...graphics power...screen...1080p video is 100% better..battery life too. It would be nice to be able to switch between Touchwiz and Android Gingerbread Stock layouf...but otherwise...its a no brianer.

I could not disagree with this post more.
I too came from a long history of HTC devices (most recently the Evo4G), and thought I would miss Sense. Nope. Not one bit. And I wouldn't touch an Evo3D with someone elses 10 ft pole.
Like mentioned in previous posts: Screen, batt life, CPU/GPU, camera!, massive amounts of internal storage, and yes, even touchwiz, make this a Far Superior phone.
And dev support is really picking up, new roms all the time.
do it.

I might be in this forum soon too. Over the past couple of days my Evo's charging port has been totally screwed up and my battery went from charging perfectly well to not charging at all. Can't even boot it up now to unroot it so I figured I might use the upgrade subsidy I've been sitting on since June. I had really planned to wait for the Nexus or SGS3 this summer/fall but I may just say "screw it" and upgrade today. Then when fall rolls around and there is some new badass handset I want, I can decide if I want to sell the SGS2 and put the proceeds toward the new one.
Traded my evo after my original gave up the ghost charging.
Now with e4gt. Love it!
Only annoyences is that i cant take pics while talking on the phone and i cant play music while on the Phone either.

FYI - I am on UnNamed and I can take pics and be on the phone. Quite simple as others have pointed out, this phone is clearly an upgrade from the Evo. I have them both and like others I thought it could not get any better than my Evo and I have been proven wrong. Also I just got the SGII for 48.88 at Sams club....
Ya i too came from an evo and let me tell ya this phone is soo much better in every way!! The evo's screen was horrible it was kinda laggy and battery life was just rediculous! This phone has an amazing screen you can crank the brightness all the way up and the battery is still gonna last you all day! This phone is a major win!! I have never had this phone lag out on me once and i have had it for months now. Even with all the apps open!

[q] evo 4g, is it good?

i've been wondering about evo 4g for a week.
I know its a CDMA phone. Is it good? :d can you tell me feedbacks regarding this phone. i wanna sell my Galaxy Y for an Evo 4g.
and how does this CDMA works? can you help me guys?
thanks, please help me decide
im really into this device.
thanks
the evo 4g, is the best phone I've had,I have had it since it came out and I'm not planning on changing it for at least one more year,I have decks 1.3 custom ROM, it gives me 15+ hours and I also like all the customization of the phone and I can tether my internet and all kinds of cool stuff. Is out of production and not getting any new official upgrades but the deva here are awesome. All I can truly say is I love my phone

Even though there are newer phones out and no longer made, it's still considered one of the very best Android phones. Take into account current used prices and they are an incredible deal, even more-so when you consider the number and quality of roms and accessories available.
The evo is a great phone and its been fine for me, but personally I would get the evo 3d or design because you are able to get those for cheaper then I payed for my orginal evo and their stats are slightly better. and they will be getting the ICS update and i just feel as they run smoother, as my poor evo gets older I see her aging a lot and its really not in a good way with all sorts of issues poping up, so I think you are better of just getting one of the newer models, but HTC is certainly a great way to go!
i hope i helped if i did hit that thanks button please!
I wouldn't mind the 3D (disable the 3d), it supposedly has better battery life and it is a little better, but you can get an Evo 4g for about half the cost.
If I was buying again, yes, I would consider the 3D more. At the moment, the 3D (and maybe the Design) is the only phone I would consider replacing my 4g with. Everything else has too many compromises or costs too much. Since I just bought my 4g though, I'm in no hurry to replace it.
THANKS for the replies! i would get it the next Week thanks and looking forward to you guys!! im very excited to have those EVO on my hands ==" darn
I just bought one
I just got one i love it so far I got it on ebay .. Pre set for boost I dont know what carrier ur on or wish to be on
its quite good,
lots of alternative ROM, lots of friendly DEV's here,
and EVO can do almost everything we ask for (for a smartphone)
Before i had my EVO i had an HTC HERO. the day the EVO came out i got rid of my hero and strigt up bought my evo with no upgrade and iv been loving it. no other phone beats this. yeah the phone is old and its DEADED by sprint and HTC, but honestly the only other phone id even consider getting is the EVO 3d or nexus when it comes out.
but overall i never have problems with this phone and i love it. in my opinion i think its the most supported phone on XDA with SO MANY roms and cool mods.
I'd wait for the galaxy note
I have the evo 4g and it was great when i got it new but its starting to show its age. If you are buying it used thats fine but if its with a new contract i'd wait a few months. Sprint is supposedly getting the GAlaxy Note which is much better. one bad thing about the evo 4g is the screen is not too good in sunlight, which can be a problem with turn by turn in the car. Samsung uses superAMOLED displays so its less of an issue. battery life is an issue esp if you overclock, i'd check out amazon for batteries. I just got a Seidio 1750 for $8. much better then stock battery
i got 2 weeks with my evo and everything is going good.... im just waiting for a fully working ics ROM and everything its gonna be perfect.
*probably in a few days
I've had my EVO 4g for 2.5 years now (well broke it twice, thank god for insurance) and I've no need or want for a new phone. I work 8 hours a day, and play pandora on my phone with wifi of course non-stop for the whole day (without charge) and am left with 50% battery when i get off! It's amazing. But of course i use Mazwoz ICS 3.5Beta, Tiatmat 4.1.0sbc Kernel, and a 3500mah battery. But still! Its an awesome phone, tons of dev support. It's fun to put it up against my friends iphone 4s's with speed test and blow them away!
Good luck with your evo 4g man! And check out mazwoz's ICS rom!

Possible to get faster data with GNex and Tmobile US?

So after 2 years of owning a Vibrant, I decided to get a new phone. Was debating getting a SGS2 or a Gnex. Ended up getting a GNex, and I am happy almost every which way, except the one thing that hit me, that I did not know before buying.
The GNex is an HSPA+21Mbps phone, while the SGS2 is a 42Mbps phone. Yes we get nowhere near that anyway, but I cant get more than 7Mbps on my Gnex, while all my friends with SGS2s are easily hitting 12Mbps with 2-3 bars, and up to 20Mbps on full bar.
This is a bit of a deal breaker for me, and now google wants a 15% restocking fee for me returning the phone. Which I am not going to do.
So my question to you guys is, will flashing to another modem or any other rom help me increase my data speeds for Tmobile US? I would be just fine with 7Mpbs, but thats only when it has FULL signal. Anything less and its more like 1.5Mpbs-3Mbps at best.
Its possible a new radio will help. I have never noticed a difference. I always average about 5 mb down with every radio I tried. In comparison I came from a t mobile s2 and only got 7 down at best.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
And I wouldn't worry about being charged a restocking fee. Hit up craigslist and trade it. You could probably even get someone to give you their sgs2 + cash.
Personally I'd stick with the GNex. That's just my opinion though. Its a way better phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I am loving the phone it self, and the screen is just beautiful, everything about it. (other than a sub par external speaker)
I am not worried about data too much, 7Mbps is just fine for me, just that I can only get that with full bar, if I have 3-4 bars, its at like 3-4Mbps, maximum.
All in all it is a better phone that the SGS2, in fact MUCH better, just wish it was HSPDA 42Mpbs compatible.
I am probably just going to keep it and do some flashing to see what happens.

I'm wondering this as well.
I was given a Galaxy Nexus and it has terrible signal strength.
I have tried 3 different radios and two different roms with the same results.
I think there may be a hardware problem.
Yeah reception on it is always one bar less than the SGS2. Buddy has an SGS2 with Milstone 6, and everywhere we go he has at least one bar over me, and I find my self rarely with full signal, and I live in the Atlanta burbs.
Again tho, so many reasons to love this phone over the SGS's even the 3. I had a chance to play with one, its nice, its massive, but having no hard buttons on the screen at all is really nice.
Since I stick with my 2GB limit, i dont think data will be an issue, just sucks that its not, but I'll live.
oh and I am still on JB stock rom, about to go give Milstone 6 a go, I love me my AOKP.
