Possible to get faster data with GNex and Tmobile US? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So after 2 years of owning a Vibrant, I decided to get a new phone. Was debating getting a SGS2 or a Gnex. Ended up getting a GNex, and I am happy almost every which way, except the one thing that hit me, that I did not know before buying.
The GNex is an HSPA+21Mbps phone, while the SGS2 is a 42Mbps phone. Yes we get nowhere near that anyway, but I cant get more than 7Mbps on my Gnex, while all my friends with SGS2s are easily hitting 12Mbps with 2-3 bars, and up to 20Mbps on full bar.
This is a bit of a deal breaker for me, and now google wants a 15% restocking fee for me returning the phone. Which I am not going to do.
So my question to you guys is, will flashing to another modem or any other rom help me increase my data speeds for Tmobile US? I would be just fine with 7Mpbs, but thats only when it has FULL signal. Anything less and its more like 1.5Mpbs-3Mbps at best.

Its possible a new radio will help. I have never noticed a difference. I always average about 5 mb down with every radio I tried. In comparison I came from a t mobile s2 and only got 7 down at best.

And I wouldn't worry about being charged a restocking fee. Hit up craigslist and trade it. You could probably even get someone to give you their sgs2 + cash.
Personally I'd stick with the GNex. That's just my opinion though. Its a way better phone.

I am loving the phone it self, and the screen is just beautiful, everything about it. (other than a sub par external speaker)
I am not worried about data too much, 7Mbps is just fine for me, just that I can only get that with full bar, if I have 3-4 bars, its at like 3-4Mbps, maximum.
All in all it is a better phone that the SGS2, in fact MUCH better, just wish it was HSPDA 42Mpbs compatible.
I am probably just going to keep it and do some flashing to see what happens.

Real world scenarios you are fine with gnex. If you want to impress your friends, that sux!

Must suck to have such problems. I would LOVE to get 7 mbps!

Impress your friends? How? By a big number from an app? How bout the fact you have JB.....theres alot more that goes into loading a webpage fast than data speed

I'm wondering this as well.
I was given a Galaxy Nexus and it has terrible signal strength.
I have tried 3 different radios and two different roms with the same results.
I think there may be a hardware problem.

Yeah reception on it is always one bar less than the SGS2. Buddy has an SGS2 with Milstone 6, and everywhere we go he has at least one bar over me, and I find my self rarely with full signal, and I live in the Atlanta burbs.
Again tho, so many reasons to love this phone over the SGS's even the 3. I had a chance to play with one, its nice, its massive, but having no hard buttons on the screen at all is really nice.
Since I stick with my 2GB limit, i dont think data will be an issue, just sucks that its not, but I'll live.
oh and I am still on JB stock rom, about to go give Milstone 6 a go, I love me my AOKP.

[Q] Any of you switch over from a Nexus S?

So I will be eligible for a full upgrade this coming Monday. I currently own a Nexus S and wanted to know if any of you switched to the Epic Touch from a Nexus S. Is it a worthy upgrade?
I did, and yes. Its the best phone they have. This phone is so fast and fluid. The way the new touchwiz is, its actually useful and light. Also...this screen is clearly the best.

How is the reception compared to the nexus S. I love the nexus but consistently got terrible reception compared to other phones.

I'm with you on that. Reception on the Nexus S is terrible, even after the update.
To me the reception is great..i have 5 of 6 bars..and no less than 3 at times.
The gps also works great. I get an instant lock and doesnt lose the signal either.
I highly recommend this phone. I was on the fence about getting it too, but im glad i did.

That sounds great. My Nexus S takes forever to get a GPS lock sometimes.
I'll definitely be paying the Sprint store a visit tomorrow. Going to walk out with a shiny new Epic Touch. Can't wait
I switched from the nexus, it was a good phone, fast with cm7 and trinity kernel. but coverage was bad with that phone in my house.. the epic touch has been getting way better signal. plus having the 4.5" super amolod screen is much nicer coming from the nexus also and always shooting for a better quadrant.. the epic touch doesnt do bad out the box, hitting in the 3500's 1st test!
The only complaint that I have is that for me the signal is no better than my NS4G...in fact, I never get a very good signal inside my house but the S2 went into roam a couple of times where the NS4G didn't but thats it..I love the phone. Can't believe Sprint isn't advertising it more. Before it came out, Bst buy or Radio Shack had never heard of it and I had to explain it to them.

SGH-T989 this phone is beyond expectation!

Feedback based on Stock Tmo ROM
PROS
after spending more than 12 hours straight doing all kind of stuff to this phone, which would have normally killed it in the old Nexus S, the T989 has by far surpassed all the expectations i had with it.
super fluid, i can do more than 10 things at once without crashing, hanging, or freezing, and simply rebooting like it did on the Nexus S.
i can be copying things around withing the phone while doing or running other apps, or installing things, without feeling a bit of lag
those simple operations would have easily frozen the Nexus S until whatever was holding it is done doing whatever it was doing.
The network speed is amazing, areas where i had poor download speed, less than 1 Mbps, now i can get 3 Mbps, areas where it maxed out at 5 Mbps i can get 8~9 Mbps (these are all indoors tests), and this is all in the broadware riddle stock ROM from Tmo
Eager to run some outdoor test to see how much higher the speed goes
speed coping pasting stuff to and from the SD card to PC or SD card to from internal memory is super fast
screen is simply amazing, it's working properly as designed, it was expected of a SAMOLED+ display, no where near as bad as it was presented on the worry topics.
camera is great, and very responsive, no shooter lag at all, unlike the Nexus S
flash works fine
the build quality is the highest i've seen from Samsung
CONS
the only thing that does worry me is the back cover...
i'm afraid after a while those teeth that keeps the cover locked to the side might simply wear out after frequent usage, like changing battery packs, changing SD cards, etc.
the speaker volume for speaker phone/ring tone is kinda low, compared to the Nexus S
screen default auto brightness is waaaaaaay too low, lets just say it stays at Zero or 5% most of the time. (work around, disable auto, and manually adjust to your liking), this will get better once CM7 or 3rd party apps becomes available to auto adjust screen brightness level as we set it to the level we want.
hmm... i can't think of anything else at the moment
still too excited and having too much fun, flashing things, restoring backup, migrating stuff from old phone to new phone, and installing more crap load of stuff to my 32GB class 10 Adata, soon to be replaced with the sandisk 64GB when it arrives by mail so i'll be installing even more stuff, until the phone slows down to a crawl, then i'll hold back
I really want to go ahead and get it. I sold my sensation to get Galaxy nexus. But I am not going to pay over 600$ for a phone if it doesn't come to tmobile. I really liked the galaxy s 2
I'm not a big fan of the GSII looks are pretty standard build quality seems good but not premium. but where things change is once you hold the device and use it you get this damn rock solid device in every aspect. Camera looks Great more settings than stock 2.3, Screen looks great with vivid colors, performance is just blazing even after so many MEH reviews of not having a Exynos this thing flies. Made me say damn your not my favorite but you really know how to keep me happy LOL. for someone to say this phone is garbage or bad they must be out of their mind.
What are your thoughts on the radio? Do you lose signal often?

i've not noticed anything weird on the radio, made several phone calls conversation walking/driving around just fine
i use 3G data a lot, and did not lose signal, unless i'm inside the elevator, or places deep inside the buildings like toilet, and basement places
the radio reception is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the Nexus S
i still need to test inside Cotsco and Walmart super centres
those places i used to lose signal on the Nexus S
Coming from a Vibrant and G2x, I absolutely love this phone. The Vibrant was really what opened me up to Android while the G2x paved the way for rooting, recovery, and ROMs.
They both had their quirks and I feel like the SGSII is THE best phone out there. I see myself with this phone for a long time because of the great development and involvement of the Android community.

I have to be honest guys, initially I did not like the thought of having a 4.5" display on my hands, I went and got the HTC AMAZE the same night was experiencing a horrible screen bleed, then found out the battery only last around 4-5hrs, it was a horrible 24hr experience... So, I decided to give the Galaxy SII a chance... OMG!!!... The GSII is the best phone I have ever had, battery is awesome I've been using the phone like there is no tomorrow, Web, YouTube, Text msg, Talking for hours, I mean constant use all day long, and I still have 30% left the battery, love it!!!... The screen, the colors, the camera its great... Definitely a way better build phone than other phones out there... Enjoy!!

Loving my SGS2, don't really have any complaints. I also love all the devs that are popping out of nowhere to develop for this phone, not to mention Team Whiskey is also working on something.
If they made my Vibrant go from a POS to an awesome phone, I wonder what they are gonna do with this one. Can't wait!
Hercules Hercules!!
other than the battery, this phones features are crazy. and there are a lot of devs doing nice stuff to improve it too
I am a flashing maniac as well as a guy who gets bored with phones in a few weeks. I have had all the top devices, and the SGS2 has honestly exceeded all of my expectations X100!!! I don't even have the urge to Root it and flash ROMs because I am actually happy with it bone stock (a first for me). I think I have finally found my dream phone. When people show me their new iPhones I just giggle and smile. I want to marry this *****!!!!

same here, of all the phones i've ever had, i was never happy with the stock ROM
this is a first, never seen such a snappier stock ROM ever
the crapware from Tmo are easy enough to remove once rooted.
now, if i flash ROM is just out of curiosity to check out what cool features the guys are adding
otherwise if i want a stable ROM, i'll just flash back to stock
i actually have a copy of the stock ROM in my SD card ready to be flash back, just in case any of the ROMs becomes unstable
I love this damn thing. Stock rom surprised the hell out of me with the features/responsiveness.
The only gripes I have are the lines at low brightness, the insane amount of bloatware, and no notification light.
Other than that, wow. I really can't believe how much I adore this phone. And the fact that I love to mod my phones (nexus one, g1 and hd2) says a lot for this one when I say I don't have any desire to root. Besides the bloat, but at least the app drawer lets me hide it.
Ok, I'm using eagleblood with go launcher... I'm in a constant love fest with the phone. Was that too overboard? Inappropriate? Awkward? I don't care. Well I came from a Droid Eris, so my ecstasy should be understandable. The Go Launcher is really solid BTW(tried a couple others that performed really sketchy) and I got it to get the desktop in landscape mode(whenever needed).and yeah, it's solid.

Upgrade is here. Is E4GT worth it?

I know the screen, processor, etc is great...but i'm having doubts about all the radio issues (gps, signal, etc). I checked out the sprint forums and pretty much all of them were about gps and signal pretty much sucking. Are you guys having these issues with custom roms? Should i wait till the issues are cleared (or not)?

new (SGSIIE4GT) user here, and loving (and I mean LOVING) this phone.
i'm not having those issue on stock, OOTB, even. (meaning, I am rooted, but still on the stock ROM, out of the box. I've only upgraded the modem, and no GPS/signal issues at all)
ever since kern/modem EK02 those were (mostly) non issues.
from what I read, most of the custom ROMs either only improve, or cause no worse.
and yes, CPU/GPU, RAM and storage (internal), screen, lack of Sense, all worth it.

I concur... This phone is SICK! Been through quite a few phones, and this one is bar none the best yet. Haven't had too many issues with the radio, but they are there. Roam control and the 1115 PRL pretty much fixed any issues that I was having though. The only reason I would maybe wait would be for the Galaxy Note, coming out relatively soon. But if you do decide to go with the E4GT you always have 14 days to return if you don't like it.
Phone is awesome. The signal issue is with sprint not the phone....imo. If you already have sprint and are happy you should be fine. Gps works great for me. I use it everyday.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I thought they still had a 14 day period where you could try it out and still able to return without penalty? If so, why not try it for a week or 2 and see for yourself?
Phone is amazing and I am truly happy with what I have.
So, no one has problems with GPS and loss of signal?
the phone is worth it. I love mine hands down my #1 of phones right now even over the GNexus. I've got a few friends that wish they had early upgrades wanting this thing that are stuck on Evo's
Edit.
As for LOS/GPS I had LOS when the phone first came out here and there but with the newer updates it's been fine I've yet to see a LOS sign on my phone. GPs I've never really had an issue with but I do know others have I just have not run into it.
I got my phone 1 Dec and have never had a LOS once. I play "Life is Crime", multiple times a day, which requires GPS and have never had an issue.

I'm loving this phone too! As you can see in my sig, I've owned many Android phones. This is the best one yet. No signal problems here. I haven't used GPS on it yet though since I got a stand alone one ...
No problems for me at all, for the past 4 months. (That's how long I've had it so far)
It was a transition from my former iPhone 4. I love it greatly. No LoS for me ever, but I do have problems with GPS here and there. Although, as of recent, it's been able to pinpoint where my location is and such.
Have been using Blazer ROM on it as well. I don't think I'd have it any other way. And with counterparts coming out (GSII Skyrocket/Note/etc.) I don't find myself WANTING those handsets. That's how awesome the phone has been to me, I just don't see a need to get anything else than this.
I've had NO problems with this phone. It's great, actually one problem and thats battery life. But thats because i use way too much (i just got an extended battery so that issue was solved). =D!!!! GET IT NOW!!!!
I decided on getting this phone. I had the Epic 4g so i am familiar with roms, kernels , and such. I actually would have stayed with the Epic if I wouldn't have dropped and broken it, but since I have an upgrade I might as well get an upgrade. I honestly thing a single core 1ghz proc was fast enough. A dual core 1.2ghz will last me years. Thanks for all the input!

Awesome! Welcome to the family...
No GPS or LoS here.
Did have some low signal issues in my house but a free airave solved that.
If I were you, and depending on when the Nexus comes out for Sprint, I would wait for that. LTE support and more update support. Although the hardware on the Nexus apparently is lacking compared to this.
Regardless I'm very happy with this phone.
I've had this phone since the first day is was available and its pros far outweigh its negatives. 4G reception is great, but 3G is not as good as it was on my Optimus S. Battery life is fantastic.

Gnex Alternative

I have been using the Nexus for about 2 months now and I must say I absolutely love the phone. Its completely open and hackable which is huge for me and it does everything I want except...
The signal absolutely blows. It doesn't work in 80% of the stores I'm in. My wife has my old incredible and her phone works just fine everywhere mine fails to work. Its not just the signal bars either. The phone will continually cut out when streaming audio while driving. I constantly lose data connectivity. Its fine when i'm at home but i'm right next to a 4g tower and I usually have -83db there but its a roll of the dice everywhere else.
I talked to a number of others who also have the gnex and I have compared their signal strength to mine (using db, not just signal bars). They have the same complains and their signal is right on par with mine. It appears that this is a problem with pretty much all Gnex phones. If you have good signal then they work great. If you have so so signal then you are screwed.
As much as I love the phone I can't justify keeping a phone that doesn't work reliably when I leave the house. Can anyone suggest a good alternative that will allow me to root it and load ICS on. I love messing with Android so a phone I can't modify won't cut it. I don't think I can go back to gingerbread after making the jump to ICS.
I can't think of a high-end android phone that CANNOT run a custom built ICS rom now...
Honestly, if you can wait, I recommend just getting the Galaxy S III. It will pretty much be the "standard" high-end android phone. I'm sure whatever you get will be outshined by the Galaxy S III, but you do have to be a bit patient.
For now, I think they've been able to get a stable ICS rom on the note, which would be my next recommendation. It's large, but future proof, and can make a suitable substitute for the Gnex. Go browse around the Gnote forums, see if they have a rom that you like.

I don't know about that. The Razr has a locked bootloader and while they have some working recovery options I have yet to see a stable ICS build that works on the CDMA Razr. The same is true for the Rezound. There are builds out there but they are far from stable if they work at all. Most says data or phone doesn't work.
I previously had the Razr and I liked it but the lack of custom ROMs and recovery options was the reason I exchanged it for the Nexus.

I'm a little soured on Samsung. Everyone I have talked to about the Nexus issues has said the same thing. "Thats just how Samsung is. Their radios are the worst."
I should also specify that I am a Verizon customer so I will need a CDMA/LTE option. To the best of my knowledge the Galaxy Note is GSM.

You're assuming that the GS3 will have a superior radio to the GNex which, as far as I am concerned, is a big assumption...
Agreed. Samsung makes nice screens but crap radios. So no other suggestions? Are we really stuck with a subpar radio if we want an unlocked phone?

Any E4gT'ers have the Galaxy Nexus as well?

I was looking at the other forum, but didn't see that much. So thought I'd ask here. What do you think? I'm thinking of possibly switching, but not 100% sure. It all depends on the price. My epic 4g touch is amazing, minus my gps. It's decent in my Pittsburgh outdoors, but not amazing. In NYC/SF/Chicago, it's really bad for some reason.
But anyways, just wondering what ya'll think! I wanted a perspective from this forum, since I know most here love their GSII's!

I have a June 1 upgrade and I may get it. I feel your pain on the NYC part. My phone just doesn't like low signal areas. In NYC I can go one block and have 10Mbps 4g and go another and have 1 bar of 3g. When I am about to lose 3g I get random vibrations and menu pop ups. That being said, my NS4G will be the phone to go wifi only. I don't think I would sell my ET4G to get a GNex. I probably would sell it if the S3 is off of the charts amazing but fortunately I am not in the position to have to make that decision. I will be rocking my Epic Touch for a while. Development is going to take off once we have the official ICS build and kernel source. The best days are still ahead of this phone

I just came from ET4g. The biggest difference in my opinion is the screen quality. ET4G has a superior screen but you get used to it. Processing power is still the same. Also what I like about nexus coming from root is you'll always have a recovery when switching roms especially cyanogenmod 9. It's a pain in ET4g. The only reason I got this is the LTE feature. The screen size had no influence imo.

Agreed, and I'm not just saying that because my upgrade is in like 1 and a half years! I feel like the Gnex and the E4GT aren't that difference, so IMO there's no need to update. I really don't see much difference in what the Nexus offers that our phones don't. Maybe I'll wait till the S3 to see if I want to trade in my phone or sell it.
Im still debating over the GN or the EVO One.
Good:
1.Flashing ROMs is way easier like a previous user mentioned because you always have a recovery.
2. The camera takes beautiful pictures, and fast! Also I should mention it saves the orientation of the picture, unlike the epic touch... -__-
3. Better android update support.
4. LTE support.
Bad:
1. Speaker wasn't as loud.
2. The phone seemed to get very hot for no apparently reason on custom ROMs and stock with different kernels within mins if usage.
3. On screen buttons are annoying, at least for me.
4. Phone struggled to get signal more than my e4GT.
5. By time LTE is rolled out in most common areas there will be a better LTE device or a new nexus.
6. Hardware isn't any better than ours.
7. Battery life wasn't good for my needs compared to the E4GT (With LTE disable).
The reasons above were my personal testings. Yours may be different.
^ Exactly what I would've said. I'm coming back to the e4gt this week. The nexus also has a purple tint to it at a dark setting. (Very noticeable on the pull down bar.)

Uhhh, the camera from the GN is wayyyyy inferior to the E4GT. Everyone knows that. It is faster though, but the quality blows compared to the latest phones. That to me was enough to pass on it until the GS3.

Well duh, that is why I mentioned it as a good thing. the camera on the E4GT is good enough for my usage just I hate having to hold my phone sideways to take pictures correctly.
I've got both
The GPS being functional is amazing on the Nexus, the screen looks nicer on the Nexus (imo)
But the Epic Touch feels smoother and is a bit more of a robust phone I think. Plus I know it better
To me the nexus is about the same as epic touch, but nexus gets me better a signal in lower signal areas.. Screen has higher resolution and that is only thing I missed from 3d ...I wont get evo lte , no way I give htc any money after the debacle that was the 3d . I hate sense so will not run it , if galaxy 3 doesn't wow then I will wait for next nexus....but galaxy 3 will be great so I will probably get that ...we should know something on thursday...

I got a couple of updates on my account and thought about getting the GNex but then I said my part of the world is not getting LTE anytime soon. If I want to pull my hair out now with Sprints 3g I may want to kill myself it that's my only choice for another year..... Now that and that alone would be my reason to just wait it out...

This has been my one and only gripe about my Epic Touch is low signal areas. My phone is almost unusable inside my office but everywhere else its fantastic. If you are saying that is OK then its still in the running for me.
Question, is all of the ET4G source code going to be available once OTA rolls out (or soon after) or do they only release bits and pieces? Also, will it be the same for S3? I assume that since it comes with ICS the kernel source should be there but what about the rest of it? Thanks
anyone see the other 1.2 million threads about the same thing? lol

Meh, what else are we going to talk about? More speculation about the S3 specs or when the next leak will be...lol? I am kinda curious to read what people that actually made the change think of the phone
