Nokia Transit, Nokia Drive, and Local Scout - Windows Phone 7 General

I went to NYC last week and used Local Scout along with Nokia Drive and Nokia Transit. They are a solid trio of apps. Reading about the debacle that is happening with the Apple Maps app all I can say is I'm glad I had my Nokia Win Phone 7 with me. My iphone 4 companion was useless. I could pin business locations I looked up to my favorites in local scout. I could then use their addresses in Nokia Transit to figure out which subway to take to get to where I was going. In my hotel room I used a laptop to drag and drop PDF maps of various places into Skydrive so I could access them on my phone. NYC's LTE worked well. I was using it before iphone LTE mayhem came to a boil. It was luxurious using a network that wasn't jammed up with ifools flooding it with random pictures of what they were eating at the moment.
The only problem is getting a GPS lock. Sometimes in the canyons of New York it took awhile for the app to locate you. And you can not rely on it to follow you 100% accurately as you walk. But once it locates you you can see where you are in relation to everything else and start walking to your destination. The combination of apps was great for finding subway stations and which subway or even bus to take. One word of caution though. Download the subway map PDF to your phone BEFORE going underground... for obvious reasons.
Anyway my Lumia 900 is a great phone. It may not have the latest inane game or flashlight app but it has a strong suite of free OEM apps that are really useful. If Nokia Transit works for other walkable cities like Chicago or large cities in Europe then it is a good reason to purchase a Nokia phone.

I'm from Cologne (Köln).
Maybe the event will be at the (2008 opnened) Microsoft building at the Rhein in Cologne.
Yes, it's a giant M(icrosoft) with its own Lufthansa Check in and Marina.
If its in a smaller location it can be at 4010 (a new Concept Stor by Deutsche Telekom).
http://4010.com/home?loc=Köln
sorry but Nokia do not show any devices to this event
http://thisismynext.com/2011/08/02/nokia-microsoft-windows-phone-gamescom/
I really hope we see some WP7 devices from Nokia, soon. I always liked their phones in the pre-Smartphone area and hope that their Windows phones will be as good as their old stuff used to be.
More to the point, Nokia need to get there devices now, certainly before the next iphone, as soon as that comes out it will be game over as far as building any momentum is concerned. If it comes out before hand and its the n9 design as leaked (great design by the way) and its pushed heavily with advertising across the board then they might stand a chance.
Its all well and good being hush hush on future devices, but on a launch like this with a new phone on a new os (for them at least), they need lots of stock, lots of advertising, and they need confirmed dates that the public can await and look forward to. So far Nokia have been far to slow yet again to react, which is the reason there in this mess to begin with.
my 2cents anyway.
Unless I am WOWed, I'll stick with old HTC...good dependable phones for the most part....
I hope the first Noika models to the US are fully maxed out with front camera and all the bells you can wish for. Not the low end, low price point models they are talking about.
Mayby they show a N-GAGE like Windows Phone 7.5 for Gamers!?
IMO a phone with Joypad-like Buttons and Xbox LIVE (more great games will come after Mango release with all the new API) would be THE phone for Gamers.
Day one for me!
I will be there with my hawkeyes. Strength of the hawk
Check out todays BING picture!
This can't be randomly...
I'm excited they've always had the best hw

Own This World, PPC.ch & xda-developers Alliance

I created a PPC.ch & xda-developers Alliance in the game: Own This World for WP7!!
(since now it is just "PPC.ch Allianz", but if some members from here join us, I will change the name to "PPC.ch & xda-developers Alliance" )
Name: PPC.ch Allianz
Accesspassword: pocketpc
First at all a demand (for game despription read below): The new alliance member should try to conquer at least 10-20 areas within one month. This demand has the background, that we consistently grow and there shouldn’t be a big unbalance in the alliance between the members with a lot areas and those with not so much areas.
Just so every one can benefit from the alliance and not just a few members (resource allocation). In particular cases it is very hard to realise because of the rivals in the particular environment but everyone has sympathy with it. However this is not the standard the worldmap has a lot of free areas.
Anyone who wants can post here his/her nick name in the game, and the country/city which he represents mainly, so that we know who is who and how far we extend.
I’m Okan58 and I’m active in Germany Hamburg and Bremen .
------
Basics of the Game:
"Own This World" is a mixture of risk and Four Square, that is a kind of real-life riskgame, in other words: it's a massively multiplayer location dependent game for the iPhone and Windows Phone 7 where the real world map has been split into millions of territories that you compete for with players that are also physically in the same area. Your rank in the world climbs as you claim territories. If you have the most you are crowned the ruler of the World.
There are some pictures that should illustrate this (video at the end of the post):

The world is split into squares and the goal is to take a lot of squares: This is only possible if you are in the area which should be occupied and produce automatically every 30 sec a soldiers (also runs under the lockscreen) or by discharging soldiers which where previously loaded into a van.
The number of enemy soldiers can be reduced by means of attacks depicted below. The more quarters one control the higher is the nightly resource production. In an alliance everything is separated to the members.
The PPC.ch alliance is with more than 30 members on the 1st Place in Germany. Let us show the world how big pocketpc.ch and xda-developers.com is. If there are any questions just post them here. Within the game, you can also communicate with each other.

Similar to the notification Centre we covered a while ago we have put together a new Business Card Reader Concept for Windows Phone , we want an applike this to offers an easy way to add a new contact to your phone: simply take a picture of a business card and save the contact. You can also keep the image of the business cards to easy visual navigation – it’s your virtual Card holder.
So any devs out here want to take a stab at it ?

???
If you do a search on the marketplace you will find good ol' worldcard just like what was on wm6.5. Just cost $9.99 but there is one. I would doubt this kind of app would be made for free.
It's great people are stating alternatives here, but this is a good opportunity for developers to have a go at something.
As the OP mentioned:
"So any devs out here want to take a stab at it ?"
I am one of those developers who wants to have a go at this, purely from an educational point of view.
Nothing is totally free in this world however out of respect I would be happy to pay for an app provided it wasn't over the odds.
Personally I think anything developed on the XDA forums should remain open ended to allow people to learn and evolve the project.
Yeah i think I covered that concept on the old Windows Phone board about six months before release...but nice idea.
Very good concept & idea
Well a lot of business cards have QR Codes on them.
But I'm going to try and see what I can do about this.
-Sent from my HTC EVO 3D using the XDA App.
yup. I have placed a QR code on the backside of my business Card that includes a VCard with my Contact info. If you scan it, WP7 will automatically send you to the contacts hub and Display my contact - you can then save it
Whats in it for the Dev Who Suceeds? Free Nokia Lumia 800 on verizon when it appears? lol
For that I would devote all my time to making it happen lol, I dont program for profit hence why most of my apps are free, I program for the free devices.
Guys check out "My Contact Tile" in the market place. It creates a QR code on your contact information. Someone else with a wp7 can scan it and it will save it to the people hub. Love it!

Nope, my phone is the flipped one on the right side, blue tiles.
I ment who finds me in the other pictures, the REAL me, not my phone

itsan n9 running ICS via nitdroid, he made a sexy device garbage.
That's insane!
Quite expected, because most Microsoft employees do receive their work phones from the company for free.
cant see any HD2's there?
also, no Mozart love!
EDIT: Interesting to see that the bright theme is rarely used.
am i the only one who thinks the way the nokias reflect the light makes their digitisers look like they are made of cheap plastic (don't know from experience, touched a wp7 nokia)

NEWS: HTC phones officially the best at stopping bullets

Hi HTC Owners...I've read this news online and wanted to share it with you guys...

One California man is thanking his lucky stars that he decided to buy an HTC Evo 3D. Yesterday morning the phone stopped a bullet that would otherwise have hit him in the chest.
It’s a scene right out of an old Western flick, except that the pocket-sized Bible has been replaced by a 4.3-inch Android smartphone. A look at the back of the Evo reveals that its most volatile components (the battery) played an important role in stopping the slug.
Obviously the victim will be in the market for a new phone now. If HTC’s marketing department has an ounce of common sense, they’ll leap at the chance to work this into their Iron Man campaign and get a brand new phone into this guy’s hands as quickly as possible.
This isn’t the first time an HTC phone has stopped a bullet, either. You may recall an eerily similar incident that occurred back in 2011, where an Atlanta nightclub valet’s life was saved by an Evo 4G. Yes, that’s another Sprint variant.
Is it possible that the Sprint/HTC collaboration is yielding some breed of superphones? Clearly one other thing Droid does is stand up to small caliber rounds.
Unapologetically plastic? That’s a slogan that works for some. Others might prefer the sound of something a bit more dramatic, and if HTC can’t find a way to capitalize on a second live-saving, bullet-stopping phone then the company deserves to be absorbed by a competitor and fade into oblivion.

That's like the best kind of marketing...

haha, yeah...It's true, HTC could replace the mobile and use it for marketing... It is definitely the best build in the android mobile market...
They should really use that for marketing, would catch the attention of people with cracked phones!
New business opportunities for HTC. Manufacturing of body armour.
