Well this is probably filed under weird forum posts but anyway.. i dropped my s3 a while back and replaced it, all is good. But i have this broken phone sitting around, the hardware is 100% intact, but the screen is not functional.. its black and no touch functions work.
I was wondering if i could garner some kind of use out of the phone, maybe find some way to store movies on it and somehow get them to play on my tv?
is this possible without being able to touch the screen?
any other ideas for my brick?
Sell it and make some cash, someone will want it for parts or something.

You could alway try to replace the screen.
Some good info here:

PM me an offer. I know what they go for on ebay
If you are on stock you could get an mhl adapter and hook it up to your TV, get a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and you now have a cell phone as a media center. Not sure how well it would work but it's worth a shot if you really want to use it.

So my screen is broken and when I connect to PC I cannot see internal memory and kies sais that usb debugging is not enabled but I always enable that so no idea why it isn't working.
Phone is rooted with calks 3.0 GB rom and CWM, I know the phone works because you can hear alerts coming in for messages. Pretty sure I have all the pics and docs backed up via dropbox but I would like to possible save the phone and replace screen.
Never done this before so I am a newb, how much would the screen cost and does anyone know a good parts website for this phone?
Thanks

Try www.ifixit.com. they have most phones listed with easy to follow directions. You can also buy your parts directly from them.

I have a shattered screen too, but I don't know if the board is cracked too (it looks like someone sat on the phone). Is there a way to check that the phone still functions? It might be worth replacing the screen to have a dev device to mess with...

I didn't think about this, my phone turns on and off but no sound and not sure what it is turning onto. Maybe I will unscrew it and try and pry the screen off to see the board.
Its super easy to fix yourself but the problem is paying for that replacement screen. Almost cheaper to buy a whole another phone

I agree just getting a replacement phone is the way to go, but I need to make sure I did not lose anything on the internal storage of my wifes broken phone. I have all photos backed up to dropbox, but I just need to make sure. Also, the used phone I replaced her broken phone with has a little bit of a beaten up trim around the screen but screen is fine.
When I connect with USB I do not see any drives and Kies says that the phone needs to have USB debugging enabled, which I could have sworn I did on her phone. I had her phone running on Calks 3.0 GB ROM and it was rooted so pretty sure I did it but who knows.
Any tutorials on how to access the internal storage in my situation? If I could do that then no need to replace screen.
Thanks
I may take up that offer to replace for $100, not a bad option at all.
How much does sprint charge to replace the screen? Hell it's just as easy to take this phone apart as my old Evo was and they only charged $35 to replace the screen. Bezel and all. With no warranty on phone

I will have to give that a try, maybe they will do it for a reasonable price. Problem is very long lines at the Sprint store.

I just bricked my S3 and whenever I plug it in, eventually, some combination of button presses makes a red LED show up, however, no screen on. Whats even weirder is that when I plug it in, it see's some thing called QHSUSB_DLOAD, and attempts to install drivers for it. I'm wondering if this might allow me to fix it? If all else fails, can someone refer me to a JTAG repair service...
Edit - When I attempt DL mode, I can even hear it disconnect, then reconnect. It fails the driver install though.
Unfortunately bud your hard bricked.

I was making a port from the S2. I changed the updater script to let it flash, it did, and then it killed me.

All I did was brought it into the store, handed it to the guy and said it was broken. Said I had a FACTORY warranty (from Samsung), and that Samsung told me to have the store do the replacement for me. The guy behind the desk said, "Yeah, whatever you stick your SIM into, as long as it's T-
Mobile, your covered. You can even buy phones offline,". It's going to be here monday. Shipped Friday, next day shipping, only 5$. I'm so happy I'm not paying 70$ for a JTAG... Not sure if this'll work for everyone, but it did for me!
Yesterday I dropped my phone, and busted up the screen, and the digitizer, I believe its called... The touch screen no longer responds, but the phone still works, can receive calls etc.
If I choose to replace it through insurance or something like that, they will charge me full price if I sent back a rooted phone correct?
Just trying to way my options... one thread talks about going through ATT's Device Support Center, which maybe the cheapest route.
Any suggestions on getting this baby unrooted without a functional screen/?

Well since you have insurance then just pay the deductible! It's not FULL price tho! Think it's like$125/150 and they'll send you out a new one!! Just tell em it fell broke apart. I don't think they'll want to to send in a busted up phone!!
That is what I did when I broke my phone. Plus it's like 2 day turn around for them too get you the phone..

Without touch screen or visual screen interactions. ..unroot is not possible...
You need screen touch to run triangle away. .
But I think you can get both changed by a repair shop for about $250..
And they don't care about root. .
That sucks. ..very sorry. ..g

So my brother's G2 is finally dying and he's going to get a new phone soon (probably a Nexus 4 or GS4). It has some scuffs and scratches but nothing big on the screen or keyboard. The main issues are that vibration doesn't always work and there are random glitches like freezing, screen flashing, and very poor performance. Most recently it won't even turn on even though the battery is fine. Anyway, he wants to sell it to help offset the price of his new phone. With all the problems, it is probably only useful for spare parts but it must be worth something.
So how much would we be able to sell it for? Any recommendations on where specifically to sell it? Also since its broken should we keep the accessories and only sell the phone itself?
Thanks

Yeah the phone is bootable, it turned on again yesterday and is currently working and charging just fine which leads me to believe something is wrong with some internal contacts or soldering. It only stops working and being able to charge every week or two for a day then after swapping the battery a few times it works again. I'm not knowledgeable enough to fix it so I'll definitely sell it if anyone is interested.

Is anyone offering a repair service? Like so many others my Xperia play's touchscreen has become completely unresponsive and it has been in a box for almost 2 years. I really need this phone repaired, there is some VERY VERY important information to me on an un-updated application that can only be opened on this phone and I don't think I can live without it. I have researched online, I don't have the skills to repair it myself. =,[.
This has been causing me so much worry and stress. Is there anyone out there that could repair this for me? I can't post links but is the Xperia Play repair service from portatronics legit? I'll do whatever it takes. Any help on who or where to send it to is very much appreciated. Thank you -Oli

No, I don't think It's something I would have much luck at fixing myself. The unit boots up and appears to be fine. I can move around on the main screen using the D-Pad but the touchscreen is completely unresponsive.

Thanks for the offer. The portatronics repair service seems to be defunct. I found another repair service from doctorquickfix (Sorry, still can't post links). $87.95 for parts and installation. I'm going to send them an email to see if the service is still available and if they can fix the digitizer.
doctorquickfix responded and said they can do it! I'll report back with my experience! :fingers-crossed:

Yep you can slelect and start apps with the gamepad. Why didnt you just try it instead of asking tho. 87 bucks thats kinda expensive expensive. A digitizer is like 20 or under dollars. Hope all goes well.

I've watched the tutorial videos on youtube and I don't feel confident that I'd be able to dissemble something like this without causing permanent damage. :crying:
I know $87 is high. I've had other offers but I can't ship to India or UK. Has to be Canada or US only. This is the best deal I could find... unless someone volunteers
As for navigation with the D-Pad, you can navigate... but only what is on the first screen. You need the touch screen to flip pages.

If you will replace the anything inside the Xperia Play, be very careful while trying to open it up. I didn't have a plastic opener at the time, so I just used a screwdrivers, and there are mars everywhere. I even damaged the microphone inside.
Well I have no idea what your trying to open or do. But im sure you could find a browser on the market that would work or whatever app. The opening of the play is actually very easy and you need a metal or plastic safe open pry tool.
Although as for the screw driver incident how could you think you wouldnt damage stuff lol not being rude just asking lol.
The only part that is hard would be if you had to replace the flex cable which rips easily. The digitizer doesnt need you to touch the digitizer however.
But if you do it you NEED a safe open pry tool or a self made safe open pry. I suppose 87 parts included would be an ok price. Plus its always nice to have someone else do it in case you mess up so you dont have to go through the frustration if your not very techy.
