System Update Available? JB? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Just got a system update pushed to my phone. I'm rooted so I did NOT accept. News online says that 40 minutes ago international galaxy s3 started receiving JB so.... Anyone know what it is? Could this be JB?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Chances are it's the L13 update which is ics.
Sent from Pluto.

Oh did that push this morning? Appreciate the response.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

it started a few days ago. But you know how Sprint is with their roll outs, it'll take a month before everyone gets the update.

best bet is to wait and see if the dev. Of the custom rom your using updates to L13.
I flashed the L13 modem that was it.
Sent from Pluto.

If you're in Poland, though, it is JB.

I'm in US, just correlation I suppose, random coincidence.
Thanks.
I will look up what the update described above consists of.

I'm getting nagged to install this update too. I wish we had an option to ignore updates. It downloaded it and wants to restart but I'm rooted and don't want to risk messing anything up. I haven't had time to look into CM10 or Jellybro ROMS. Any word on if this Sprint update can be safely installed or will it brick and/or unroot?

if i update, will this break root? i'm turning my phone into best buy tomorrow because i have a cracked screen. i need to get it back to stock anyway and figured this is an easy way to do it, im running the latest jellybomb. as long as it doesnt brick it, i'll try it and report back

You can unroot the phone using odin. There is a great video by qbking on YouTube that has links to everything you need to root or unroot the phones. Also I don't believe by just downloading and installing update that you can return to stock. Usually the phone will deny access to the update and then stop asking for you to update.

Everyone was hoping for Jelly Bean lol. That was such a let down when I saw it was still ICS. Just gotta wait a little while longer for Jelly Bean. Sprint likes to take their time, hopefully we'll have a 100% working port soon, though!

Has anyone heard anything about this update? I am wondering if this may be my chance to gain root access by waiting for a rooted version?
I "heard" one person...ONE that says he/she got the OTA. I'm not buying it. Oh well...just waiting for the rooted update, if in fact the OTA even went out.
Can I haz Netflix?
In another thread about the update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132153
Some one says they called sprint and it was pulled due to bugs.

Hello I'm new here and I would like to ask if I should wait for someone to root the 4.22.651.2 or I should just download the new its the 4.24 and forget about rooting my EVO
So the golden rule is of course never take OTA updates. However, I look at it this way. Your already unrooted, and if they find an exploit were still looking at several weeks before it's released so why not see what the new firmware brings.
Im guessin now that this latest OTA is released things may progress, but what the heck do I know.
I got the update this morning.
So what happened? Is this a whole new ROM or just a patch?
i SAW, AND AS SURE AS SNOT IS SLIPPERY, DID NOT INSTALL TILL I KNOW WHAT IT DOES
way to thread necro mate!

Need your advice!!

Since I have my E4GT rooted, is it safe to push the OVA update for signal Los that Spring just pushed out? It's just that I keep getting the notification that I have the update ready to download and it is becoming extremely annoying.

Rule #1 of rooting, never take an OTA. If you want to take it. You must first completely unroot, then accept the OTA. Otherwise wait for a dev to release a rooted version.

I wouldn't really say that's rule #1, probably more like rule #23 or #24... the first like 20 rules mainly include Modding, getting sh*t for free, and banging b*itchs

If you're rooted or running any other system modification, the OTA won't apply to your phone. Even if you try, it will fail and you'll just reboot back to your normal phone. Your best bet is to actually install an EK02-based ROM. If you want to stick to stock with just the new modem and kernel, and keep root, I recommend the UnNamed ROM that was recently posted. It's basically a rooted, debloated stock with CIQ removed.
Basically exactly what I was looking for.
It also includes the latest CWM, making future flashes nice and easy.

There was a trick to keeping it cleared until you reboot when i had my nexus s, but i can't remember what it was. Try searching the the nexus s forums for it. It'll keep you from going insane from clearing it 20times a day.

i have stock non-rooted phone. mine is running 2.3.4
i try and go into settings to update my system and it says i have the most current version. any reason it's not pushing to my phone yet?
any idea what the sprint update included? would it be worth reverting to a stock rom to get it?

Sprint said that its a minor update thats primary fixes are for:
- 4G Sprint Hotspot disconnects when in a phone call
- Radio loses signal and may require power cycle
Couldn't hurt i guess. But there are a bunch of roms already out there that are using the ek02 update. Just use one of those so you dont have to do double the work.

Rooted running custom ROM and kernel. OTA FAQ?

With the recent uncovering of the rdf page showing samsung/sprint are working on an official 4.0 release for the E4GT, I can't help but ask questions about the details of OTA's while rooted. I'm running a custom ROM and kernel, will this interfere with my ability to receive the ICS OTA when it does happen? Although I love my custom phone, and am very happy with my decision to root it, I am certainly not the only one who would like to run ICS. Anyone have any knowledge?

There won't be a ota for over a month or two....this is for a leak it will be a tar file flashable in Odin....you never want to take a ota when you are not stock that's asking for problems....if you are only rooted you can take ota and it will work and remove root also ...this leak will not be perfect look at international gs2 they have had like 4 or 5 leaks and still no ota yet... It will probably be the same here ... 2 or 3 leaks and then you can expect a ota after that..

Yeah I understand the OTA wont be prolly till April atleast, so I know in safe for awhile and will continue running blazer. but lets say when the end of March rolls around, should I revert back to a stock ROM and kernel and then ill be fine to take the OTA? or lets say it tries to give me the update before I revert my ROM I can refuse and get the update after I stock my phone? these sound like dumb questions but sadly they are ones I do not know the answer to..

The ota will fall if you try to apply it anyways .... But if your running blazer he will update to 4.0.3 or whatever they leak real soon so no need to take a ota anyways ... Then you would have to re root etc,...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
True, I fully intend on rooting with ICS. but I'm not all about running unstable roms with stuff broken. I need everyday walkaround stuff. (blazer rules). but basically your advice is to just chill with blazer, refuse any sprint otas and rock the 4.0 update since phantom will prolly bust one out before Samsung anyways?

How will we know when we get an OTA ICS?

I'm a little concerned. With everyone here rooted and on custom roms, noone will get the OTA update. That means we have to rely on outside sources for the availability of that update. That also means we will have to unroot/go back to stock to get the update. That just seams like a lot of wasted time. I'm going back to stock right know so I don't waste any time.
Then again, maybe it would be better to get it a couple hours after it is released. I mean with sprints network pushing all those updates at once.... waiting might even be faster.
From what i've seen most of the time the ota is leaked here before its released.

No that was not THE ota but an ota most of the leaks supported ota flash and we will know when the ICS kernel source is released and when you look at your phone and it says there is a firmware update lol
Lol i haven't received an ota on any device since i joined xda
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
You will know. It will be posted on BGR, Brief Mobile, Android Police, etc. Sprint usually lets the world know a few days before the OTA is sent. Chances are it is that it will be the last RDF that is posted before they announce.
On the old Epic the source was usually dropped the night before the OTA started. There's always someone lurking on stock and you get a topic on the forum stating "Have OTA notification can someone help me pull it?"
So, in conclusion, there's no cause for alarm.
Plus not everyone here is rooted. There are those that prefer unrooted stock. I can't imagine why but they exist

Rooting doesn't prevent the OTA from installing. Modifying or deleting system files with your root power is what causes the OTA to fail.
If you install the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN OneClick, the OTA will install file. It will disable your root, as all official OTAs do.
Won't our phones get the OTA notification regardless what build/ROM is installed?
Depends if the app that handles the updates was disabled/removed, never present, or still active.

Makes sense.
Do you know what app handles that and how to check and see if it's still in operation?
That was my thinking before too. When I first installed custom roms with ek02. I thought how I would have get the next OTA update. I just waited until the developer of the ROM i'm using updates it to the latest build. now I don't feel the need to accept any future OTA updats. Plus it will break root anyway, if you didn't change any system files. Might as well wait a few days and get the update with the ROM of your choice. you can always download the OTA update later on and install it manually if you want too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is System Updates, but might be Smart Device Manager.
The process to check for updates is distinct from the one that bugs you to install after it is downloaded. They may or may not be in the same app.
Why would you want the official OTA update when you can wait no more than a day and one of our amazing devs will have it rooted and ready to use like any other leak so far.

Oh trust me that's exactly what I'm going to do but was adding to the conversation for people truly curious and interested in receiving the OTA.
I don't see myself ever running plain old stock again. I'm too spoiled now. lol

Anyone else just have this pop up?

Did anyone else just have a message from T-Mobile pop on the screen about something to with an update?
Just curious because I just did twice, but each time it stated something about me running an unofficial version of android.
After several restarts it popped up again except this time I was able to grab a screen shot of it. I hope this is really it.

Nothing for T-Mobile T999 in my area yet. Make sure you guys mention your device model, carrier, and current build too please. These will all make a difference.
There has been no kernel source released yet though and from what I've seen recently they've been releasing that before or at the same time as the updates. Doesn't mean anything for sure but figured it'd be worth mentioning.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Nothing for me either, says its up to date for my T999, just flashed to NC2 to check :/
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Oh, and if you get the update and want to pull it so you can share it here, this is what you do.
Let the update fully download, but when ready choose postpone. Next flash twrp via Odin, then reboot into recovery. Use the built in file manager to copy the update.zip to your sdcard. I think it will be in /data/fota or maybe in /cache. If not just look around for the fota folder.
Or if you choose, flash the supersu zip after booting recovery, then reboot, install a root browser and copy it that way.

If you've flashed back to purely stock you can force it to check. Go to settings, about device, software update. What is your current firmware build? Were you using a custom rom when you got that?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
No pop-up for me... T-Mobile user here..
I flashed to stock, but I'm not exactly sure the Odin files I used were up to date and couldn't check due to needing to flash cwm in order to get it to boot fully.
Had to clear dalvik for it to boot after 1hr of waiting.

Would be good if we can know what rom he was using(or still using)when that happend...
