Need your advice!! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Since I have my E4GT rooted, is it safe to push the OVA update for signal Los that Spring just pushed out? It's just that I keep getting the notification that I have the update ready to download and it is becoming extremely annoying.

Rule #1 of rooting, never take an OTA. If you want to take it. You must first completely unroot, then accept the OTA. Otherwise wait for a dev to release a rooted version.

I wouldn't really say that's rule #1, probably more like rule #23 or #24... the first like 20 rules mainly include Modding, getting sh*t for free, and banging b*itchs

Thanks for the advice guys I truly appreciate it....will probably just wait like you said and until then just keep clearing the notification.

If you're rooted or running any other system modification, the OTA won't apply to your phone. Even if you try, it will fail and you'll just reboot back to your normal phone. Your best bet is to actually install an EK02-based ROM. If you want to stick to stock with just the new modem and kernel, and keep root, I recommend the UnNamed ROM that was recently posted. It's basically a rooted, debloated stock with CIQ removed.
Basically exactly what I was looking for.
It also includes the latest CWM, making future flashes nice and easy.

There was a trick to keeping it cleared until you reboot when i had my nexus s, but i can't remember what it was. Try searching the the nexus s forums for it. It'll keep you from going insane from clearing it 20times a day.

no OTA for me...
i have stock non-rooted phone. mine is running 2.3.4
i try and go into settings to update my system and it says i have the most current version. any reason it's not pushing to my phone yet?

any idea what the sprint update included? would it be worth reverting to a stock rom to get it?

Sprint said that its a minor update thats primary fixes are for:
- 4G Sprint Hotspot disconnects when in a phone call
- Radio loses signal and may require power cycle
Couldn't hurt i guess. But there are a bunch of roms already out there that are using the ek02 update. Just use one of those so you dont have to do double the work.

It doesnt matter WiFi, 3G or 4G its going to pop up regardless but if you want to download it faster turn on one as soon as it pops up and if it wont dont let it update turn on your WiFi then goto system settings update android and do it that way

Usually the first thing the DEVs do is rip out all the Sprint and Samsung bloatware. I for one would like a week or two to play with any new widgets or apps added to see what I like or don't like THEN maybe slap on a custom ROM and add the features I liked also for the bugs to be worked out.
So the big question for us rooted phones is where can we find the update.zip asap tomorrow so we can flash it with CWM?
Thanks to all that make this phone great!

How will we know when we get an OTA ICS?

I'm a little concerned. With everyone here rooted and on custom roms, noone will get the OTA update. That means we have to rely on outside sources for the availability of that update. That also means we will have to unroot/go back to stock to get the update. That just seams like a lot of wasted time. I'm going back to stock right know so I don't waste any time.
Then again, maybe it would be better to get it a couple hours after it is released. I mean with sprints network pushing all those updates at once.... waiting might even be faster.
From what i've seen most of the time the ota is leaked here before its released.

No that was not THE ota but an ota most of the leaks supported ota flash and we will know when the ICS kernel source is released and when you look at your phone and it says there is a firmware update lol
Lol i haven't received an ota on any device since i joined xda
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
You will know. It will be posted on BGR, Brief Mobile, Android Police, etc. Sprint usually lets the world know a few days before the OTA is sent. Chances are it is that it will be the last RDF that is posted before they announce.
On the old Epic the source was usually dropped the night before the OTA started. There's always someone lurking on stock and you get a topic on the forum stating "Have OTA notification can someone help me pull it?"
So, in conclusion, there's no cause for alarm.
Plus not everyone here is rooted. There are those that prefer unrooted stock. I can't imagine why but they exist

Rooting doesn't prevent the OTA from installing. Modifying or deleting system files with your root power is what causes the OTA to fail.
If you install the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN OneClick, the OTA will install file. It will disable your root, as all official OTAs do.
Won't our phones get the OTA notification regardless what build/ROM is installed?
Depends if the app that handles the updates was disabled/removed, never present, or still active.

Makes sense.
Do you know what app handles that and how to check and see if it's still in operation?
That was my thinking before too. When I first installed custom roms with ek02. I thought how I would have get the next OTA update. I just waited until the developer of the ROM i'm using updates it to the latest build. now I don't feel the need to accept any future OTA updats. Plus it will break root anyway, if you didn't change any system files. Might as well wait a few days and get the update with the ROM of your choice. you can always download the OTA update later on and install it manually if you want too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is System Updates, but might be Smart Device Manager.
The process to check for updates is distinct from the one that bugs you to install after it is downloaded. They may or may not be in the same app.
Why would you want the official OTA update when you can wait no more than a day and one of our amazing devs will have it rooted and ready to use like any other leak so far.

Why not just flash the update in stock recovery? You can use ota rootkeeper to protect root.
Also the pro version of mobile odin will flash any of the full fw releases as well as the otas, and it'll reinject root during the process. (Its now my preferred method)
Most people arent going to want to give you their nandroid. theres too much personal info on it. Even those like me who make one right after flashing will be very cautious about this. Theres almost always something in there that is easily forgotten to clear. You could get lucky and find someone willing to do it, just dont get your hopes up too much.

Hey doc got some questions for ya. I came to the gs3 from nexus s 4g. With the ns4g I could always just flash new ROMs and updates in cwm. It seems the process is a bit more complicated on gs3. I purchased mobile Odin, and I've used the PC version a couple of times, but I'm not that comfortable with it. First day I got my gs3 I flashed Mr. Robinson's root injected uvlah2 and just stuck with that. A couple nights ago I finally flashed a new radio and it has helped my signal. I want to make sure my phone is ready for the jb update so what would you suggest?

[Q] Noob wanting to put the Sprint JB leak on his S3

Like everyone and their mother, I am tired of waiting. I am completely lost in the forums, and I know I will get all kinds of crap for posting this. Since my S3 is my main, I have 1 big question... What is the easiest way to put the official JB leak on my S3 while maintaining the ability to accept the OTA when Sprint pushes it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am brand new to this, I have tried reading all the basics but I just want to be sure. Thank You.
It's no way to root Jellybean and then accept the OTA as far as I know.
if i understand the SGS3 right, all you have to do is flash to stock unrooted, accept the official OTA update then use odin again and root. but why bother unrooting to accept the OTA when you can jsut flash a rooted port of JB. Plus if you take the OTA update and then reroot and flash a custom rom, then the whole process taken to get the OTA was a waste of time.
Ok, but if I flash the zip from here do I NEED to flash the kernal? Also, can install this over the top of rooted stock?
Thanks

Read the OP of the link. You need to clear caches and data as a general recommendation. The kernel is up to you, it comes with one already.
Thanks everyone, your replies are helping me make my decision. I'm just nervous about the whole process. I guess I just want what the OTA will offer but don't want to wait for it!

To root is the answer.
Trust me. within HOURS of the "official" release there will be copies here on the forums rooted and all other crap.
SO install the leak and forget the OTA all together. once the OTA is posted here (likely prerooted etc..) just flash that.
SUPER freaking easy once you have done it once you won't have any issues in the future.
just remember check check again and then check again that your flashing a compatible (SPRINT) rom. and you should be just fine.
Just in case anyone cares, I flashed freeza's LIH and I am thoroughly impressed. Battery life seems a little lower but other than that, it's running perfect. Thanks to all who encouraged me to go further down the rabbit hole!

I am running Jellybean now and would never unroot to take a OTA. Like others have said on here before the OTA comes out we will already be on it.
the easiest way is to root install clockwork or twrp (WARNING twrp does not appear to be able to access a 64gb card have not tried CWM)
then flash LIH (very stable no issues really)
when the OTA comes out you just come back here and install the "rooted" version of the OTA. I would be surprised if we did not get it first.
OUR updates are EASIER than the downloaded OTA
these are MASSIVE files. let your PC and home internet connection do the work of downloading the update and then simply "flash" the new update. faster easier safer etc. etc..
Thanks all, running LIH with LIG modem. Still can't find which modem is best to run for battery life though... With that being said, I am serching through the forums looking for the best one.

when a rom settles, it simply means the software kinda learns how you operate it, kernal learns how you use your phone, such as how often and what you open on a daily basis. usually first couple of days, battery can be horrible, its gets better as you use your newly downloaded rom.

I'm unsure overall. And don't worry there's no chance it will already be mb1 lol. If new out of box, it will at a minimum be at LJ7. Ma6 and mb1 have been released in the last week. The phones in box left the factory months ago and haven't been updated since maybe in a few months the new in box phones will have the mb1 update so just get ready as if your LJ7 or a previous version.

Update to mb1 before rooting otherwise you will have to root all over again.
Root will work on mb1.

I really do not know. I went to MA6 from whatever was previous on my phone(4.1.1). then I rooted then next morning OTA MB1 and rerooted all in less than 48 hours. So i have really no way of knowing what changes were in between MA6 and MB1. There were some minor changes I noticed after updating to MA6.
Google Settings appeared in the App drawer. I think there were some keyboard modifications where there is a separate heptic feedback switch to turn on or off.
Other than that I think everything else was behind the scenes type stuff and bug fixes.
before buying on craigslist, request the ESN number and call up sprint to see if its clean. First thing you should do

Thanks guys. I already picked it up and its great. Everything seems to be working and I can't find a single scratch on it. He gave me a nice case too. Anywho, now that I have it I see I'm on LJ7. How are you guys updating the baseband? I updated PRL, Profile, and I checked for a firmware update but there was none. I am on stock recovery (for now...lol).

Ok, Settings /manage apps /all.
Scroll down to Google services framework. Force stop. Clear data.
Back out to settings. System update, update samsung software. Try a couple of times if necessary.

Just wanna make sure. Regardless of which baseband I'm on, any rom should work, right? Sprint roms of course. It's just that on the Note 2, some baseband versions wouldn't play nice with certain roms (cause errors, etc.). I'm seeing some roms in dev section saying, "based on ma5" or "based on ljc." Does that mean I HAVE to be on that baseband to flash that rom? Sorry for all the noobish questions but when you bounce around devices, you get confused

Samsung devices act the same. I suggest you read a whole lot more since your question reveals that you really have no idea what you are doing and a brick is in the future... I realize you're excited to play around, but the results of fapping with tissue paper and fapping with sand paper stem from more than just a simple word.

A brick is NOT in my future. Look I respect the fact that you've been around a while and have helped many out but just because I ask a noobish question doesn't mean I'm a noob. I've owned an OG Evo, a EVO 3d, the EVO 4g LTE, the galaxy nexus, the sg2, the gnote 2, and sg3 and many more I probably can't remember right now. I have been a "flashoholic" for quite a while, flashing roms, radios, mods, etc. I've even helped devs build flashable zips to install mods. I HAVE NEVER BRICKED A DEVICE. Maybe my question wasn't clear but it doesn't matter cuz I already updated my baseband to mb 1 and I've flashed several roms, all without incident. It seems to me that all roms work regardless of what baseband your on (as long as they are for the right device). I respect you and others on this forum and I just didn't appreciate the tone with which this came across.
