Rooted running custom ROM and kernel. OTA FAQ? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

With the recent uncovering of the rdf page showing samsung/sprint are working on an official 4.0 release for the E4GT, I can't help but ask questions about the details of OTA's while rooted. I'm running a custom ROM and kernel, will this interfere with my ability to receive the ICS OTA when it does happen? Although I love my custom phone, and am very happy with my decision to root it, I am certainly not the only one who would like to run ICS. Anyone have any knowledge?

There won't be a ota for over a month or two....this is for a leak it will be a tar file flashable in Odin....you never want to take a ota when you are not stock that's asking for problems....if you are only rooted you can take ota and it will work and remove root also ...this leak will not be perfect look at international gs2 they have had like 4 or 5 leaks and still no ota yet... It will probably be the same here ... 2 or 3 leaks and then you can expect a ota after that..

Yeah I understand the OTA wont be prolly till April atleast, so I know in safe for awhile and will continue running blazer. but lets say when the end of March rolls around, should I revert back to a stock ROM and kernel and then ill be fine to take the OTA? or lets say it tries to give me the update before I revert my ROM I can refuse and get the update after I stock my phone? these sound like dumb questions but sadly they are ones I do not know the answer to..

The ota will fall if you try to apply it anyways .... But if your running blazer he will update to 4.0.3 or whatever they leak real soon so no need to take a ota anyways ... Then you would have to re root etc,...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

True, I fully intend on rooting with ICS. but I'm not all about running unstable roms with stuff broken. I need everyday walkaround stuff. (blazer rules). but basically your advice is to just chill with blazer, refuse any sprint otas and rock the 4.0 update since phantom will prolly bust one out before Samsung anyways?

It doesnt matter WiFi, 3G or 4G its going to pop up regardless but if you want to download it faster turn on one as soon as it pops up and if it wont dont let it update turn on your WiFi then goto system settings update android and do it that way
Ok. Thanks.

Usually the first thing the DEVs do is rip out all the Sprint and Samsung bloatware. I for one would like a week or two to play with any new widgets or apps added to see what I like or don't like THEN maybe slap on a custom ROM and add the features I liked also for the bugs to be worked out.
So the big question for us rooted phones is where can we find the update.zip asap tomorrow so we can flash it with CWM?
Thanks to all that make this phone great!

New OTA update and root...

I caught wind that VZW is going to put out 2.3 OTA update soon, so here's my question.
If I'm rooted, but still on the stock Rom, which I have to put it back to, everything stock except for "root" and radio version, will the OTA update unroot my phone, or in any way mess anything up?
I will unroot it myself and put EVERYTHING back completely stock if I have to, but I'm not ready to give up the ability to WiFi tether my phone with my xbox to run xbox live.

Most likely the update will break root. Most do. But generally given a few days to a couple of weeks there is a new root method

It wasn't long at all after the 23NOV update started being pushed OTA that us rooted dummies had a very simple to follow set of instructions:

Will be the same when/if 2.3 hits.
I don't think there are any legit sense roms built 2.3 yet. So we are forced to wait
Does anybody else think that the 2.3 ota is gonna come with Sense 2.0?
Can't wait for 2.3! However, most surely we will have to reset all settings before can update.

If you guys wanna try a great Sense 2.0 ROM I would suggest Warm Z TwoPointTwo. Been using the nightly 3/31 and its a fantastic ROM with great stability. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901822
I think I'm done with custom roms, not a single one I've tried has been stable so far, even though they say they're stable. I think it might actually be something with my phone that's causing instability with roms.

Sometimes u have to try different rom/kernel combos to figure out whats best for u. I have great luck with nils business z and re eng z, both using ziggys latest bfs w/o havs kernel. Rule #1 of rooting, never take an OTA. If you want to take it. You must first completely unroot, then accept the OTA. Otherwise wait for a dev to release a rooted version.

If you're rooted or running any other system modification, the OTA won't apply to your phone. Even if you try, it will fail and you'll just reboot back to your normal phone. Your best bet is to actually install an EK02-based ROM. If you want to stick to stock with just the new modem and kernel, and keep root, I recommend the UnNamed ROM that was recently posted. It's basically a rooted, debloated stock with CIQ removed.
Basically exactly what I was looking for.
It also includes the latest CWM, making future flashes nice and easy.

any idea what the sprint update included? would it be worth reverting to a stock rom to get it?

Sprint said that its a minor update thats primary fixes are for:
- 4G Sprint Hotspot disconnects when in a phone call
- Radio loses signal and may require power cycle
Couldn't hurt i guess. But there are a bunch of roms already out there that are using the ek02 update. Just use one of those so you dont have to do double the work.

[Q] Root my 2.3.6 or wait for ICS upgrade?

Hi all,
I'm still on the fence about rooting my t989 and so I'm looking for advice. I got the 2.3.6 update and I really want ICS but I'm willing to wait for it though. Also, I'm pretty conservative when it comes to risks such as rooting due to warranties, bricking, and losing functionality. However, I'll be traveling for a while and tethering could be handy and titanium backup has always been attractive to me. But what happens if ICS comes out? I think I loose root if I update OTA, but I should be able to get root again. I'm not a big fan of real 3rd party software because I don't want to work with bugs so if I got a new ROM, it may only be CM9 or similar as reliability is important to me. And then I don't want a new ROM if it doesn't use the Linux Kernel since Ubuntu is developing that OS to share that Kernel. Do I even need a new ROM? I think touchwiz is fine. Pages of apps are better than scrolling through them IMO.
So any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks!
Root it unless you plan on running stock ics. Chances are the ota will be releases here before it hits your phone we have a couple really nice ics roms right now. Don't know what your waiting for lol

This is the thread i followed to root. Very simple instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 but yeah same method one has pics one dont.
Edit: Unrooting the phone is the same process as rooting except you flash a different file to the phone.
My suggestion is to root. But don't sweat CM9 it is pretty buggy right now because its still beta and isn't officially supported on our phones. But there are plenty of stable ICS roms now and even if u don't care for the few bugs that some may have, there are also some amazing GB rooms out there too.
Just my 2 cents.
Sent from my iced out to perfection GalaxyS2
But I don't NEED a new ROM do I? Doesn't it just change the GUI? Basically I just want tethering and freeze bloat apps and ads, but a battery life boost would be great. How much does it change under the hood to expand capability? From what I can tell, root apps are the only thing that expands features.
Root and install a rom... If you think your phone is good, with a rom you'll see your phone is just great
Sorry for all my questions but is the kernel held within the ROM? And whatever ROM I choose, I can just flash to different just like that huh? Like it's an easy process?
My brother has Juggernaut, it didn't look any different than touchwiz except for flashy little things like the screen turn off and stuff. I just need function, not flash.
Some roms com with their own kernels, like TDJ's ones... You can flash a rom and then change it for another, but you have to wipe your data for a clean install (there's always the option to backup your info)
Questions go in the Q&A section

How will we know when we get an OTA ICS?

I'm a little concerned. With everyone here rooted and on custom roms, noone will get the OTA update. That means we have to rely on outside sources for the availability of that update. That also means we will have to unroot/go back to stock to get the update. That just seams like a lot of wasted time. I'm going back to stock right know so I don't waste any time.
Then again, maybe it would be better to get it a couple hours after it is released. I mean with sprints network pushing all those updates at once.... waiting might even be faster.
From what i've seen most of the time the ota is leaked here before its released.

No that was not THE ota but an ota most of the leaks supported ota flash and we will know when the ICS kernel source is released and when you look at your phone and it says there is a firmware update lol
Lol i haven't received an ota on any device since i joined xda
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
You will know. It will be posted on BGR, Brief Mobile, Android Police, etc. Sprint usually lets the world know a few days before the OTA is sent. Chances are it is that it will be the last RDF that is posted before they announce.
On the old Epic the source was usually dropped the night before the OTA started. There's always someone lurking on stock and you get a topic on the forum stating "Have OTA notification can someone help me pull it?"
So, in conclusion, there's no cause for alarm.
Plus not everyone here is rooted. There are those that prefer unrooted stock. I can't imagine why but they exist

Rooting doesn't prevent the OTA from installing. Modifying or deleting system files with your root power is what causes the OTA to fail.
If you install the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN OneClick, the OTA will install file. It will disable your root, as all official OTAs do.
Won't our phones get the OTA notification regardless what build/ROM is installed?
Depends if the app that handles the updates was disabled/removed, never present, or still active.

Makes sense.
Do you know what app handles that and how to check and see if it's still in operation?
That was my thinking before too. When I first installed custom roms with ek02. I thought how I would have get the next OTA update. I just waited until the developer of the ROM i'm using updates it to the latest build. now I don't feel the need to accept any future OTA updats. Plus it will break root anyway, if you didn't change any system files. Might as well wait a few days and get the update with the ROM of your choice. you can always download the OTA update later on and install it manually if you want too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is System Updates, but might be Smart Device Manager.
The process to check for updates is distinct from the one that bugs you to install after it is downloaded. They may or may not be in the same app.
