Hello all, just wanted to start out saying this forum ROCKS! And wanted to say thank you to all the Devs and contributors for your time invested in creating a venue that we can all learn from.
Now to my dilemma. I''ve fallen on hard times (as I am sure many have due to this economy) and need a little help here. Had to let my 2 year plan drop due to financial issues, (They got a year out of me @ $130.00 a month) don't see it improving anytime soon, so I had to get a prepaid sim (on the same provider network, as I want to be able to keep using them but on a prepaid basis), the sim was activated (through an old razor I had with a good IMEI no.)
I paid for my phone ($200.00) through the plan, sim is now deactive. Looking to see if I can put my new prepaid sim in the plan phone but have not done so as I am sure it will get hit in a few days due to ID no. I am aware of the issues with respect to the ID no. Need a workaround for this to use my new prepaid sim on the phone I purchased through the plan. I am probably nerfed. Maybe I can use odin for the issues if possible?
Any help I can get (privately) just email me in here would be greatly appreciated.
If you paid for your phone, there should be no problem with it, if you still owe on your old account, then there would be a problem.
Doesn't make sense, the phone is his, he's not on a subsidize phone payment. The phone is his to keep. If anything he woruld talk to the retention department. Do an etf but maybe he can plea for it to be lowered? I'm not sure if they'll give you any discounts but it doesn't hurt to ask from this department. In the end you should pay for the etf. Do monthly payments of it or something. It's better than avoiding it.

Let me see if i understand this correctly, and provide some details. I got the phone at a reduced price through a promotion. The promotion stated get the phone for X dollars if you sign up for a two year contract. Since I paid the x dollars the phone is now mine, I own it correct? Now.....since I can't continue with the contract I have to pay an etf, if I don't (Or better said if I can't afford it) Then they nerf my phone from being used on their network? How wrong is that! I paid for the phone so if I put in a new sim it should be allowed to be used on their network because I am basically still paying for service, difference is its pre-paid. They shouldn't have a right to nerf an IMEI of a pesons paid for phone based on not being able to live up to the contract, as the contract is one thing, and the phone, (since it was paid for),is separate being that it's your property. IMEI's are supposed to be nerfed if a customer reports it stolen or lost. NOT as a means for a service provider to track your phone to the extent of since you could not live up to the contract, completely nerf your phone from their network. The way I see it, I paid for the phone, and since I am paying for the usage of the prepaid I should have the right to use that prepaid sim on my paid for phone. This looks like a class action suit here if you ask me. What say you?

This isn't Sprint. I got my T-989 from T-Mo in May with a 2 year contract. I paid $100 for the phone. For a undisclosed reason, my contract was terminated and I kept the phone. In July I bought a Sim from Simple Mobile, popped it in and still to this day, it works great.

I disagree. when you lease a car the contract states you are leasing the car. When you take out a loan on a car, the car is owned by the bank that holds that loan until you pay the loan back. When you buy the phone you are buying the phone with your own money so no bank can take it from you nor should a service provider block you from using it. Because you own the rights to that phone, you purchased it.
I paid the full price they were offering the phone for, IF I signed up for a Service Contract, key words here. I signed up for a contract for service NOT for a contract for the phone I had to buy a phone that works on their network. So basically what happens here is that you get the phone at a price. From the moment you pay for that phone it's yours. Why? Because it was contingent on you signing up for their service. From the moment you sign up for that service you fulfilled the part needed to get the phone at a said price. It does not say "lease" this phone if you sign up" It says buy this phone.
After that if you can't pay for the service you don't get that service and yes you are liable for an etf of the service not the phone, it's yours, you own it, you did not lease it nor does the the service agreement state that you leased the phone. You fulfilled the obligation to sign up, you paid for the phone. It's your property.

At this point I'm not sure if the IMEI of my phone was nerfed or if the sim was nerfed. And I'm afraid of putting in my new prepaid sim in it and run the risk that the prepaid sim gets nerfed if my IMEI is still o.k.,
1)Did you have to pay an etf though to keep using a phone you already paid for? and 2)That sim is a prepaid sim right?, and simple mobile is part of t-mo so I wonder if I use my prepaid tmo sim if they will nerf my sim (Though I don't think they would have a right to as I am paying for a different service on my own phone). But I would hate to find out that they would do that the hard way and end up having to buy another sim. I need my money.

So I could use a tmo prepaid sim in my phone with no worries then correct? They wont zap the new sim or IMEI?
My phone is not rooted (yet need to read up in here first) it's stock and locked to tmo, not unlocked.
Yes what If you had a contract SIM and a prepaid one and used both, or if you traveled and had another SIM, they aren't going to flag your phone.
You'll be fine.

Those are for stolen phones. They were bought from someone else, not from Tmo. That could only happen to him if he bought the phone from someone or if he reported it stolen since hes the owner.

Well idk it all depends. If there was only one payment for the phone then its okay.
Anyway what's done is done. They won't block the prepaid Sim if he uses it in his phone. The worse that can happen is that they block the phone, but not the Sim.

I just went through all ten pages of the first link and the page of the other link, the other link mentioned that they block the phone to force payment. (Something I can't do due to financial difficulty) Now the issue with that is that if they do that, then they are in essence doing something illegal because the phone was not reported stolen by me or lost and I didn't place an insurance claim. So that being the case, they are messing with MY property, as I paid for that phone. I have the receipt. If they block my phone then that is basically a company using unscrupulous pratices to peoples property in order to force payment and is like strong arm tactics much like the mob asking for protection money for christ sakes! How can we put an end to these companies doing this? It's not right. What other recourse would a righful owner have other than to change the IMEI number then?
First of all, they will not be able to block your prepaid SIM with your phone. That's impossible as it is prepaid. They aren't going to block any sims based on the imei. If anything they will block your account or blacklist your phone. First of all you already paid for your phone. The matter is that you have 1 year remaining on contract for the service not the phone itself. I forget but i remember a csr for T-Mobile, a fellow xda member, said they should not blacklist your phone. There were other cases where it is blacklisted because the phone was being paid off monthly. The subsidized monthly payment for the phone. A few have claimed that they have been blocked because of that. However that rep did say they do not black list the phone for that, only if it is reported stolen or lost.
Do yourself a favor and test another SIM on your phone. If it works you're good to go. It would not be shot down again. If it doesn't work you're blacklisted. Get it unlocked and trade with someone who uses att

My only fear is that they hit my phone later because of using a different Sim on the phone. But I am going to trust in your info and cross my fingers and hope for the best.
When I got this phone, I purchased it in a T-Mo store, the receipt shows two Items. 1) A security deposit of $100.00 (cause my credit sucked and 2) states the name of the phone, followed by the serial number, followed by something that says post payed Activation with two years after that, followed by Not discount eligible, followed by the sale amount (the price I paid for the phone and the $100.00 Security deposit combined, followed by the total and then it shows cash with a minus sign to the left of the amount paid. So Based on that I figure it safe to say it's not subsidized, correct?
Don't worry about it. There is no way that T-Mobile is going to look up the imei number for your old account and zap that SIM too. They have better things to do than assign someone to do that. If anything that will cause problems because if you sold the phone to someone else and they zap their SIM, they're going to get an ear full. And in most cases. The lower tier csr does not have access to imei searches.

Bring your SIM card and a sd card. Make a phone call then save something on the sd card.
If he let's you, download a benchmark app and check if the reported specs match to see if it's a fake or not.
At this point you've checked whether the phone is banned, has a working sd card slot and isn't fake. The only thing left is cosmetic damage.

You can also if they're willing to, meet at a t-mo store to have them check the ESN for a stolen phone or not
You can't check if the phone is banned. I just lost 450 dollars as I bought s2 from Cl. I used the phone for 2 months and it quit working. I called T-Mobile and they told me it was reported lost or stolen. Imei got banned.

That's horrible! I am surprised that they can even do that (t-mobile, i mean)! But how is the IMEI related to their ability to shut it down? does the phone transmits this info to their servers? I was under the impression that only the CDMA phones can do that....
If your sim card on their network is in a phone, that phone has a specific number that is transmitted as your using the phone. If the number comes up as stolen or otherwise the network can stop that specific numbered phone from accessing the network.

That is what I though that only cdma phones. But since they signed the contract to get these phones. If they break the contract and don't pay their bills. They banned the imei number. The phone will not get any signal and it would say can't register to network. Same things happens when you claim the phone as lost or stolen. My first hand experience.

You can either have the ESN checked on the phone before making any final deals, buy brand new phones, or buy straight from the carrier or phone manufacture.

I actually think that rep you talked to told you the wrong information. I highly doubt that the original owner could report a stolen phone that he has not used under his account after 2 months, I've played with a friend's t-mobile agents account and the IMEI of every phone you ever used is listed including the date used. It is most likely that asurion or t-mobile will not agree to do a insurance claim on a phone that he or she has not used for 2 months.
I actually believe that the original owner had a subsidized phone and stopped paying for it after he sold it to you, t-mobile probably warned him the first month and ended up banning the imei the 2nd month.
Now I am wondering myself, I thought T-mobile/asurion only bans a phone if it was reported STOLEN not LOST. Can someone clarify this for me? I use to buy a lot of phones off CL even though I bet many are reported "lost" and people filed insurance claims for them; however, I have yet to have a phone become "banned." Well I haven't bought any phones off CL since January.... sooo i guess things might have changed?
Phones can honestly be blocked for any reason, I usually have heard of them for non payment on the device or being stolen at the time of delivery

If it was indeed blocked, is that the final story for the device? That's it? Dead? Gone? Nothing to do about it? Can't one unlock it, use it with a different number of the same carrier (tmobile)?

you can get scammed with brand new phones too. there's the "equipment installment plan" with tmobile. the way the scam works is to put a loan out on a phone, then don't pay the monthly payments.the scammer sells the phone, and then tmobile bans that phone

I respectfully have to disagree with you. I am a RSA with T-Mobile USA and the way the payment plan or the "equipment installment plan" works is that it is on your account so if your account gets cancelled due to non-payment it's gets charged off to your account including the ETF. One thing T-Mobile cannot do is ban your IMEI because it is unlawful, it is not different then you buying clothes on your macy's card and then not paying for it and them coming into your place to confiscate your clothes. the only time T-mobile will ban a IMEI is A. when it is stolen from a store i.e Demo phones or missing merchandise. or B customer calling in to report the phone missing. in the case where the gentleman stated his phone got banned after 2 months isn't because of a late insurance claim but much more likely due to a missing phone coming up in the quarterly inventory. the best way to ensure you are getting a legitimate deal is by calling 611 from your phone during the purchase and verifying the IMEI and then asking the rep to memo it in your account so if in the future the phone is reported missing the burden is on T-mobile and not you. interesting stuff, but there were a couple cases where reps told the customer that the phone is blocked because the owner stopped paying for the phone. I think there are a couple stories of that floating around this subforum.
But okay can you elaborate more on what you mean by the missing phone coming up in the quarterly inventory?
also make sure u plug the phone in and make sure it charges, bring a laptop and usb cable if u can too. If the microusb port doesn't work, u can't charge, root, or do anything else.
my friend had billing issues with verizon they started double billing him got like 400 behind so he said screw it and went to sprint he gave me the phone but im 99% sure it will be locked because his contract was not up
If you weren't able to, I'm pretty sure that stealing phones to resell them would be a whole lot less lucrative.
Just need to ask Verizon to activate it and you should be set.

excuse me stealing? my friend showed me he even showed verizon his receipts he had PROOF of FULL payment every month all of a sudden his bill went up like 400 bucks he is only person on account they asked him to send in his receipts he did they refused to fix it, they are the theifs 412 bucks he does NOT owe and they said pay it off or we shut you off so he told them to f**k off
He's not accusing you of stealing, he's saying that if it was not possible to activate it the entire market for stolen phones would not exist because they would be useless.

I've been able to get months of free service from Verizon by threatening to cancel (I do have 7 lines for over ten years though and 3 lines are in the top 1% of data use age.. still unlimited ).
However, as the previous poster pointed out and you ignored, call Verizon and just activate it. They won't say no to a new line with 2gb data cap.
I think its stolen but whatever I need ten posts in newb central.

look,Sqrils it is NOT stolen he still has the receipt with the imei of the phone, ya he went to verizon knocked everyone out stole a galaxy nexus and printed himself a fake reciept .....
Its a 4g phone...just pop a good Verizon sim in it and it will activate...

The phone won't be blacklisted for non payment unless its reported stolen or fraudulent. Cancelling an account with an outstanding balance doesnt meet the criteria.

pay off verizon? ya right my friend showed me the receipts he paid his bill to absolute zero balance every month then one bill came in and instead of the regular 120 came in as 523 bucks he sent them all his receipts and they still claim he owes 400

Exactly. They think he owes them money. Just because he left for Sprint doesn't mean they're just going to give up trying to get it from him...
Plus you understand he's screwing his credit. And they probably won't activate it because there is a bill attached to that phone. So technically it's blacklisted until you pay for his share. I've worked far too long in the cellular industry to know. Unless they're desperate for customers then I don't think so

I use TMobile prepaid and just would like to cancel contract and keep using GS4 on my existing prepaid. I've paid full price for the GS4. So when I receive it I can just cancel my contract and this will not affect any additional fees and/or blacklisting IMEI etc. ?

Right I just mentioned that for now GS4 is unavailable for prepaid users so I had to subscribe for a contract to order it.
I did the same thing.
I have a prepaid account but I signed up for a new line and purchased the phone outright.
i know a bunch of other people on this forum did the same thing.
I am wondering if anyone canceled yet also and how they did it.

Yeah I looked on the T-Mobile site...no Galaxy S4 for prepaid phones. You have to give them your State ID and SSN to subscribe to a "no contract plan" where you pay the full price of the phone+$70/month. Which is complete bullcrap, because prepaid is the exact same thing, minus being forced to give T-Mobile your State ID/SSN for no reason at all. It's not just T-Mobile either, it's the same way with Sprint. Carriers want as much of your information as they can get; it's not enough you pay for service and the phone anymore.
My issue was much more interesting that anyone here experienced I believe.
When I ordered to my SSN and ID they haven't approve me and I was very wondering why cause I have a great credit score.
Then I contacted credit bureau and find out that my credit score fall <<400 that is unbelievable. Further speech and I realized that I've become a victim of identity theft. Now they confirmed this and recalculated my credit score as it should be. But to save time I had to order GS4 with my girfriend's papers.
Thanks GS4 that I've found identity theft so early.
The only one thing I have to do is cancel the contract once I receive it tomorrow.
So as I bought phone outright should I call somewhere to cancel it or I can just utilize sim card that I receive?
I'm also a prepaid customer, ended up buying the phone full price. Just hate the fact that even if you're paying the ful price you still have to sign up for service. I hope the only thing we have to do is give them a call and cancel the new line.

I received it today and I already put my prepaid plan sim card on it. I need to cancel the post-paid plan but I'm not sure if I should do it now or wait. The sim card that came with the phone is still untouched inside the box.

If you paid full price for the phone it's only $50/mo. The other option is to pay $149 up front for the phone, then it's $70/mo.

Ok I was thinking that it included 2.5 gb data, but that's an extra $10. So it's $60 if you want 2.5 gb or $70 if you want unlimited.

I dont think it is SIM unlocked.
I havent read yet on any forums if anyone has been able to have it unlocked yet by t-mobile.

I think my experience might rival yours in "interesting"...
I also want to use the S4 on the $30 prepaid plan, and therefore intended to go the route of buying the phone with a $50 line and then cancel it.
I tried to buy online, but it told me I needed to contact a sales rep to complete the order. After starting an online chat with a sales rep, it turned out they required me to pay an additional $400 deposit. (I am pretty sure I never had an incidence with my credit rating so I am not sure why) As I intended to move over to pre-paid, I asked about the policy of how to get back the deposit if I cancel the line before the 1 year is up after which you automatically get back the deposit. After that she started to accuse me of committing fraud! and that t-mobile is not in the business of selling phones. I then asked her how asking about cancellation would violate their new un-carrier marketing and she asked me "where I came up with such a thing as un-carrier". She then simply canceled my order and hung up on me.
I don't think I have ever been accused of committing fraud before for wanting to pay a store over $1000 to buy their product!
I then tried to order again to get a more knowledgeable and competent representative. Unfortunately this time my bank decided t-mobile was "committing fraud" because they thought a $1000 was an unreasonably large amount for a internet transaction.
After the bank unblocked my credit card, because I told them I really do want to spend that much on a phone, I tried it again. Unfortunately on the third time the "account verification department " declined my request without an explanation of why they wouldn't take my $1000.
So I spent about 3 hours on the phone with t-mobile on Monday and I still don't have a S4 I don't think I have ever had a company as adamant to not taking my money as t-mobile. Now I'll have to wait till the 15th before I can try and buy it in a store
Does anyone know what might have gone wrong, or how to convince t-mobile to sell me a phone?

That's horrible. The reps are obviously just confused with the whole new setup. Every rep I talk to gives me a different story on how/when my classic plan will convert over to the new value plan.

Reps are stupid. I would try and see if you can get it price matched at best buy and buy it there. They should since it will be off contract and you're paying full price. I just don't think they have it in stock yet.

Looks like you won't be able to do it before 15 except asking your relative/friend to do it for you, as I've done it.
Their credit dept haven't approve me since I had credit alert on my credit history due to identity fraud.
Your situation, did they tell you why you should pay 400 deposit?
Have u ever had their postpaid account before? Cause if you've never cancelled their contracts before and had no issues with credit score then I'd suggest to contact credit score bureau and figure out from there why you've been declined.

You run the risk of buying a stolen devices or from a person who has been delequent on payments. For this reason, I would personally not buy and always will never buy any cellphones from craigslist. I see too many horror stories. But if you insist on buying Id make sure to ask the right questions before you buy and test the device before paying

When I buy phone off Craig's I meet only at T-mobile store and have store clerks check with T-mobile Customer Service to make sure phone is paid off and not reported stolen, then I ask to notate my account that I am the owner of the phone now and it being paid for.
This way old owner has no legal right to claim it stolen, since he is right there present with me along with store of other witnesses.

Not If the imei is transferred to a different account. Also, if this is a concern you can get a signed sales record.
Plus AFAIK, they don't blacklist stolen phones anyway. There's been some pressure from government officials to make this happen. But I don't think there's been anything yet.

I bought one for 550 and this Tuesday my service went out, when I called they told me my phone was reported lost. I just told the guy, I have it right here. And he unblocked it.

I bought a phone from CL, met at a TMobile location, ask them to transfer the IMEI to my line. so far so good??
No... I used the phone for a few month and one morning, no more network. I try my ATT SIM and it works. I call TMobile, they tell me I need to change the SIM what I do, still nothing. I send the phone to Samsung, they dont see any issue.
Call back to TMo, they tell me the phone was declared stolen and there is NOTHING I can do because I am not the original buyer!! a complete RIP-OFF.
The worst is that they wont take any responsability
At least ATT transfer the number to your account as long as you have the info of the previous owner so the phone really belongs to you while TMobile just say there is nothing they can do.
I first believe this blacklist system would be a great thing to avoid stolen phones, but the way it is implemented is so wrong that the only looser is the guy at the end of the food chain.
If you buy from CL, ALWAYS ask for the original receipt!!!! if they dont have it, it is fishy! and if you can have a bill of sale

Seems like some folks are claiming insurance fraud then selling the phones then the IMEI becomes black listed - very bad ethically and morally.
I personally have sold a few of my old iphones and more recently Galaxy S4 with no paperwork. The person checks it out it works give me cash and then bye bye. I try and prevent giving them my receipts or documents as they contain personal information on them. However I would show them it if asked.
Just curious why would some people sell their note 3 craigs list and not return it under the 14 days? Perhaps they have an upgrade and want to cash it out for a profit?

Yeah, they sell it for cash, but that doesn't make sense at all with T-Mobile now. Since you end up paying $700 for a phone. There is no point in selling it for $500 on craigslist unless you plan to commit fraud or whatever. Now, if it's contract like the other carriers, it makes sense and you can make a little bit of money.
All I can say is meet at the T-Mobile store and verify the phone is paid off. Then if possible (not sure if they would allow this) ask a T-Mo rep to make a note on the seller's account that the phone is being sold to your account and vice versa on your account. If the seller is okay with this, then it should give you a hint that he's a somewhat honest person, but anything can still happen. I say just buy the phone from T-Mobile, authorized retailer, or Newegg/Amazon.

Good points raised. I was going to return mine and get a craigs list used T mobile version, but it ain't worth the 200 dollar or less saving for me. Like you mentioned why would they sell the t mobile one when they can get their money back from store minus 50 perhaps.

You have to take precautions.
Have something in writing when buying or selling. Include the serial number and IMEI number then both sign it.
I have sold and bought a handful of phones with no problems. Yes I do consider myself lucky because stuff does happen.
Avoid PayPal and high check amount transactions. They are scams.

Ya, I've seen several times, someone pays the initial down payment on a phone (or 0 down), sells the phone for full price, then defaults on the payment. The buyer usually doesn't find out for 3 months. Definitely meet at a store.

My best advice would be to ask the seller if he/ she would be willing to meet at a T-mobile location to make sure the handset is legitimate. Tell the seller a friend or relative of yours was ripped off in the past and you just want to make sure. Best of luck to you friend.

Meet in a Tmobile store and have the seller have the tmobile rep look at their account and verify the phone is not on an equipment installment plan and the imei is not reported as lost or stolen. Also get a signed recepiet (with both parties printed name and the description of the item sold)from the seller stating they sold you the phone. There are many stories where a phone is reported lost or stolen after the sale and after the imei was checked to be in good standing.

If meeting at a store isn't possible you can call T-Mobile and have them switch it over to you over the phone while standing there with the guy before any money exchanges hands.

Tmo will block the phone until the bill is paid in full. So if they never pay the bill with the phone balance due the phone bought will not work. And now tmo and att share a blcklist so cant use it on att network either. Also as stated even after the sale some people report the phone as lost or stolen and claim a warranty on it making the phone sold useless.

What happens when the bill goes to collections? Tmo gets paid by the collection agency but when the collectors get paid will they unblock the phone?
Besides, if they were to report it stolen 2 months later, who would believe you would wait 2 months to report a stolen $700 phone?

Apparently people do. Just search on xda for phone stop working or phone doesnt get service after working for a few months (there were a lot of threads like that in the tmo note 2 forum). Many said tmo wont unblock it until the original owner pays it off. They wont even allow you to pay it off if you wanted to. So its better to have all the evidence as possible that the phone was sold to you.

I personally wouldn't buy new T-Mo phone on craigslist nowa days, and I would be super careful and do due diligence when purchasing on eBay. Even eBay is subject to these issues, just look at how many people are selling Note 3(s) on eBay that are listed as having bad IMEI(s). Why do you think that is? People are are doing multiple different scams and such that involve the IMEI getting blacklisted after a while.
One involves people selling the phones and then not paying their bill after it was purchased on a payment plan. Once they don't pay their bill they blacklist the IMEI. The ONLY way to unblacklist the IMEI is for the original purchaser to pay their payment plan bill. Even if you legitimately purchased the phone they will not unblock it for you. I know of more then one person that has tried to resolve this with ZERO success. Going to a T-Mobile store to do the transaction will not help in this situation because often the account is not in a negative standing yet and doesn't happen till a later date. The only thing a T-Mobile store can help with is identifying if the phone is stolen or not, which doesn't help with these latest scams.
The only way to avoid this is to 100% make sure that the phone you purchased was paid for in full at full price and not on a payment plan. Even then I have heard of sellers providing photoshopped receipts to buyers only to get their phones blacklisted months or weeks later because the phones were not really paid off. One might think that eBay is safer from a seller that has feedback but no not really. Often by the time you get blacklisted you cannot leave bad feedback or file a dispute. However with that said, most card companies (VISA, MC, ETC) allow you to do a chargeback within six months of a purchase if its some type of fraud that happened as a result.
The other way involves a more scammy way that I will not explain, with again the outcome being a blacklisted phone that the 2nd purchaser cannot resolve. However these are happening all over the place and there's not a sure fire way to avoid it. The best way to avoid this is to simply buy a phone directly from a authorized seller like T-Mo, or to trust your buyer 100%.

There is no way to be 100% sure that a T-Mobile phone is a safe bet, unless it is coming from someone you trust.
Even if you go to a store with the seller and verify that the phone is fully paid for, they still have 30 days from the incident date to report it stolen or lost if they have insurance or JUMP! Yes it is fraud, but it is almost impossible to combat. Police will record your incident and file it, but will not actively pursue a situation such as this in most cases. T-Mobile will suggest that you contact your local police and will not do anything to help you.
Another note: If you call or go into a store and ask them to check the IMEI number, they can't give you information regarding financing unless the phone is being financed under your name or a authorized account manager. You will need the phone seller to go in to the store to verify this information for you.
I'm sure there are plenty of people out there trying to sell their TMO phones honestly, but do you want to take a high percentage chance that you are being ripped off? That percentage rises if the phone is brand new selling at a huge discount. EX. Craigslist in my city shows a guy selling 4 TMO Note 3's brand new for 550.00 each. I can almost guarantee that those phones will be blacklisted sooner or later.

There is a certain amount of risk involved. It all depends on how good of a deal you get. I've bought quite a few phones from CL then sold later on Ebay. Right now I'm using a Note 3 bought on CL for $400. I could sell it with a bad IMEI on Ebay and still make a good profit. I always disclose in my auction that the phone has been verified as clean at the time of sale but that could change in the future since I don't know the history of the phone. it doesn't seem to stop people from buying the phones.
Just last weekend I found a great deal on a S4 international version, or so I thought. After getting home and messing with it I found out it was a fake! The owner never answered my calls or texts, go figure. I was able to sell it on Ebay fully disclosed as a fake and only take about a $40 hit. If you're going to use CL you better be willing to take some risk.
Also my research leads me to belive that Tmo and att do not SHARE blacklist info for phones that the bill is not paid on, only units reported lost or stolen. Nobody had been able to prove to me they do. Since I use Straight Talk with att sim card that eliminates some risk of my phone becoming blacklisted. In my mind anyhow it makes me feel better!

Any tips or suggestions on how I can buy a tmobile note 3? How can I be sure it's a good esn/imei without it being reported stolen from tmobile?

Best way to buy it is to PRESUME the phone you are buying is ALREADY blacklisted. Next is to buy it at the lowest price you think it fair. For example, I bought a Note 3 T-Mobile from craighstlist for 525. The guy said it had a clean IMEI but I was skeptical of it but since it was at 525, I could not have cared less since I was planning on using it with AT&T. I later unlocked it using RegionLock Away and everything is SMOOTH. Love the phone.
i wouldnt trust craigslist.. i had bought a phone on it that i thought worked. when i came home it bricked.
Just thought I'd share my craigslist experience this morning. I wanted to post a screenshot but cannot for some reason so copy and pastiing.
Me: you still got the note 4 for sale?
Him: yes
Me: Can you provide a reciept to show that its fulky paid for and a bill of sale with your name and id number? I'm just trying to avoid insurance scammers.
Him: It's not fully paid off. I just got the phone because it came with the line which is all i needed at no additional cost to me.
Him: But I'm not eligible for insurance because I've used my two for the year up already.
Me: Well if you're selling a phone that isn't fully paid off tmobile will block it when you stop making payments. Which makes the phine useless and you're trying to sell it is fraud.
Me: lol good luck man

Funny how his insurance is already used up, i wonder what became of those phones hmmm. So I would encourage anybody buying off craigslist to ask the same questions i did. They're are some genuine sellers i buy and sell from Craigslist all the time.
Make sure the box is a genuine t-mobile box the phone will set in a recessed form fitted area and not just on top of flat paper.
