[Q] Bricked S3 with red led lit - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

My friend bricked his S3. Something about putting an international rom on it or something. He had no idea how to fix it bought a new one and gave me the bricked one. It shows no signs of life other then a red led on the front when its plugged in without a battery. I can't get it into download mode (power+home+volDown wont work) So is there anything else I can try to get this thing working.

No. Its bricked. It needs jtag

If all else fails (I would keep trying to boot into download or recovery - sometimes it can be finicky), but if all else fails you can send the phone to someone who can JTAG it (pm me for a link if you need it as I am not sure I am allowed to post a link). As I recall their fee for resurrecting a phone is sixty dollars ($60.00). That's a pretty good deal for a new S3.

Trust me its not getting into DL mode. Its a paperweight. Heres the jtag link he's referring to
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-jtag-brick-repair/

Thanks for posting the link billard412. I wasn't sure if I could post it without violating forum rules. Do you know anyone who has used the service?

Don't see why you couldnt post a link. And just look around the site, damn near everyone that bricked(who didn't return to Sammy or carrier claiming "defect") used that. Very reliable

I bricked my phone, flashed wrong rom. :(

so I just tried to flash a rom on my phone and stupid me being tired as hell flashed the wrong one.
If there any way I can do anything to it?
If it helps I accidently flashed the galaxy note version of a rom on my Rogers S3.
I am guessing I am basically screwed and need to send it in?
Thanks.
Sorry mod had like 40 windows open and posted this in the wrong board, kinda freaking out. :/

Possibly try a jig, if that doesnt work(and it probably wont as you've borked your bootloaders) send it to mobiletechvideos and pay $60 for them to JTAG it, they are a very reputable company and have done the service for one of my captivates. Be more careful next time and at least you dont have to pay samsungs near-$200 price to fix it!
On another note if you dont want to have to deal with shipping(and you should get shipping insurance, cost more but worth it if the device disappears) you may be able to find someone locally that does JTAG service for the GS3 but I haven't seen anyone around me that does it.
I'm pretty sure a JIG should get you into download mode...I always thought a JIG is a sure fire way to get you into download mode. There is a thread somewhere that has a list of forum members that have JIG's and where they are located, if you don't have the money to buy a JIG you might be able to find someone to let you borrow theirs.
SO............................You thought your question was so important that it deserved to go in the original dev section.

Ok I am going to look into getting a jig.
Thanks for the help guys

No i didnt, if you read my origional post i said i made a mistake and asked if it could be moved.
As already stated a usb JIG requires some functionality of the bootloader, if it is completely nuked it will not work. The reason being the jig is simply a short circuit which triggers the bootloader to fire up, the most basic of functions being download mode. The bootloader from a different device may or may not have a similar enough instruction set to trigger the process. If none of the methods of [hopefully] getting into download, i.e. pulling the battery and letting the caps discharge, or booting the phone with the usb connected with or without the battery...chances are slim (although not impossible) a jig is going to do much. It is fairly simple to make your own jig as outlined in this thread although it does require fairly precise soldiering ability and a usb micro cable one would be willing to sacrifice. Most likely in this case JTAG is required to manually send an industry standardized set of signals to the PCB to jumpstart the bootloader into download mode.
If you're close to Austin I'd be glad to help. Jigs can help in some situations but I think this will not be one. Every other case of flashing the wrong boot loaders that I have seen has resulting in a non functioning phone or download mode even with a jig. I personally bought one back when I had my captivate because I had one that didn't have the button combo for download mode. Ended up with a soft-brick for a week one time while I waited for the thing lol.

[Q] USB Jig for Soft Brick?

Hey there. I saw this site for DIY USB Jig and using it to boot into Download mode. I was wondering if anybody has had a change to do this?
http://rootgalaxys3iii.com/diy-usb-jig-for-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-boot-into-download-mode/
I'm not hard-bricked and really don't need it, but there's been a lot of questions from people about how to recover from a hard-brick. Before I turn around and say, "HEY, TRY THIS!", I want to make sure it works. I turn to the Masters for the answer.
Thanks.
This is the first that I am seeing that a jig will work with this phone (even though that article is from Oct 2012). I knew they worked for 1st gen Galaxy S devices but everything that I have read was that it would not work for the SGS3. Be nice to see if someone can confirm this too.
Also, the jig is used for a "Soft-Brick" (has power but can't get into Recovery or Download mode) and a JTAG is for a "Hard-Brick" (No power and/or maybe a red light and some wording like QHSUSB_DLOAD on the screen).

Thanks for the clarification. Title changed to reflect this information.
I'd be interested in seeing if this works.
Well, the site has a video showing it worked... Not enough? I thought that site was pretty reputable for Galaxy info...
Edit: OOPS, I was thinking of http://galaxys3root.com/ But again, the other site shows a video of the phone booting into Download mode.

It works, I bought one before I bought my jtag box.

Thanks to my epic FAIL at multitasking, I'm quite sure I bricked my phone...halp pls

I'm a veteran ROM flasher however tonight I made my very first big oopsie and loaded a i9300 ROM onto my i747 device. Once the ROM completed loading on the phone I hit the reboot button then out the lights went. She's definitely dead. When I plug into the PC it's prompting to search for drivers to QHSUSB_DLOAD and Odin doesn't see the device either. No charging LED, just a black screen, can't get into recovery or download modes. I saw a post from someone else previously but it didn't go the direction I think I need. I've heard of a jig, but never needed to use one until now.
Unfortunately you have hard bricked your device. I9300 ROMs always cause a hard brick on an i747. USB jigs do not currently work on GS3s. You will need to use a JTAG service similar to http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com
Sorry about your luck. =(
Keep in mind you only need a JTAG if you are 100% bricked. If your phone shows ANY signs of life post back.
Try pulling the battery, wait 30s and power into download mode. If you get nothing (no vibrations, no lights, no power) see link above.

Ahhh fantastic *facepalm* I was just about to try making my own jig. When I connect to the PC without the battery I get a red LED. That's it.
**Edit: Wow, ummm...the JTAG thing is a tad pricey. Maybe I should try getting AT&T to do a warranty exchange. This sucks...the price I pay for not paying attention...
Yeah, definitely sounds like a hard brick. You can try to make the jig, but from all that I've read, not one person reported a working GS3 jig for a hard brick solution. Doesn't hurt to try... and post back if it works =p
Really sorry bout your luck, GS3 seems to be a very touchy phone to flash.

Thanks for being so nice about my retardedness LOL It never would've happened had I noticed I was in the wrong SG3 forum It's late here and I'm tired as fack so any attempt at jig making will have to wait. If I can get it done I'll most definitely post back here. Thanks for all your help

It's actually not a hard mistake to make. One thing I would like to suggest to the mods is resolving the redirects at the top of the page. If you are in the i-747 forum and click on the Accessories forum you are directed to a page within the I9300 forum. That makes sense because both use the same accessories. Problem is, when you click on the link at the top of the page to go back a level, you are actually going back into the I9300 forum where you could potentially pick up a ROM that will hard brick your device.
Good luck is resolving your issue. JTAG is pricey, but it works. Some people have had success going into the store and pleading ignorance. Maybe try that first?
I saw a post in another thread out there about someone successfully using their Captivate jig on their S3...I went to the AT&T Warranty center today and was told that since the ph# originally on this device was ported to another carrier, they won't honor the warranty. So I guess I can try the jig thing. If no dice then she'll go back to Samsung...oh the price we pay for tinkering LOL
**Edit: Just read in this thread HERE where someone mentioned their S2 worked on their S3 too. Hmmmm...
Eh, it happens man.

Samsung will still honor the warranty even though att will not. It will just take longer. I can confirm the gs2 jig does work in my gs3. However it no longer resets the flash counter.

Hi, I'm new to Android and new to this forum also so excuse me for any noob comment or question. Unfortunately I just did the exact same thing OP did...I research a bit and I could be wrong but doesn't the JIG USB only works with soft brick phone? So buying one of those alone wouldn't do me any good?

[Q] Bricked Question? Please Help.

For the record I did search the forum (pretty quickly) and didn't find what I was looking for so I hope I'm not reposting the same issue.
So I was flashing the Slim Bean 4.2.2 rom to my galaxy s3 using goomanager and i think my phone is hard bricked.
In goomanager it allows you to select multiple zips to flash, and I'm pretty sure they flash in the order they are listed. Well i planned to flash the Slim-i9300-4.2.2.build.6-OFFICIAL (the rom itself), Slim_Gapps.4.2.2.build.6 (google apps for the rom), and Extras.4.2.2.build.6 (extras specific to the rom) for the Slim Bean rom from the slimroms site.
I had the Extras.4.2.2.build.6 zip listed first then accidentally pressed the flash button and without thought confirmed my actions in the pop up window (Yes i'm an idiot). So it rebooted and went through some script then my phone went black.
It wont go into download mode (home, power, vol down), it won't display anything on the screen, and it wont power on. My computer recognizes it and shows that it is connected. I don't know if that will do anything it terms of fixing it on my own? I haven't read up on bricked phones too much but i'm pretty sure its hard bricked.
Sooooooo, first off does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do?
-If i were to take it to a Sprint store what would they say? I've had it for a year and I don't think i have any warranty (granted i know rooting my phone would technically void it anyways). If it doesn't power on or do anything could I say it turned off in the middle of the 4.1.2 OTA update and resulted in its current state?
-Would a usb JIG boot my phone into download mode and fix my problem?
-Is a jtag service my only option?
-If it is jtag does anyone know a place around the Louisville, KY area that does this sort of thing? I google searched but didn't find anything local.
-If not i guess mobiletechvideos is my best option?
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm in dire need of this phone to be fixed as I start my new job in a 2 weeks and need it for obvious communication reasons.

"Slim-i9300-4.2.2.build.6-OFFICIAL" that is the international model version of the ROM. Flashing International ROMs hard brick your phone. So yes, you do have a hard brick. As to taking it to sprint, Idk if they'll do anything for you especially if you have no insurance or warranty. Sorry bud
Well your problem is not that you flashed in the wrong order. Your problem is that you flashed a rom from the International S3 (i9300) not the sprint SPH-L710. You attempted to turn your Sprint phone into an International S3. This flashed completely different partitions onto your device. JTAG is the only way to fix it. They have to open the device and repartition everything. Mobiltech is the way to go. My advice in the future is if you don't find the rom in the Sprint Galaxy S3 forums do not flash it.

Well i feel retarded.... should have done some more research and not trusted a youtube video.
Is JTAG service the only way to fix it/will that fix it?
Ya, I didn't know what they'd do if i played dumb (i know, thats bad, but im desperate) and said it did this during the official OTA update.

Just do more research next time before flashing. And as the person above said, don't flash anything that isn't on the sprint GS3 forums.

Unfortunately yes you are hard bricked and it sucks. JTAG will fix it Google it there are good services out there for about $60 and week or so turn around.
If you pay for insurance you could also take it to sprint and tell them it won't boot and they should replace it for a deductible. Some will call this fraud but the way I see it if you pay for insurance it is there to cover mistakes. You didn't mean to brick it just like some one who dropped it in a pool didn't mean to ruin their phone.

Thanks for the quick response everyone. I really appreciate it. I feel dumb. I usually do my research, but I was bord and a spur of the moment action got me in trouble this time.
I guess I'll run to the sprint store tomorrow and see what they can do, if anything.
If they can't do anything, mobiletech it is! It looks to be a reliable site. Will my phone be active on the sprint network still after the JTAG? or will I have to do anything to it? I also assume I will get all the text messages and what not that my phone is currently incapable of receiving now?
Any thing else I should know about the JTAG or my phones hard bricked state before I go ahead with it since we are on the subject and I don't want this to happen again.

I doubt you will get any texts, sprint is not saving to deliver them later. Unless your using Google Voice. Your phone will be up and running rom flashed but it won't activate until you log into it with your google ID, just like when you get in the box brand new.

**Bricked Phone Recovery**

OK, got an s3 i747 and the previous owner flashed it with the wrong rom, namely Liquid-JB-v2.9-OFFICIAL-i9305 wich is for the i9305. After this massive screw up after rebooting from clockwork recovery his screen went black. and nothing else. Dosent power up, cant get into download or recovery mode. After connecting it to the pc though i noticed that it tries to install a driver QHSUSB_DLOAD. after some searching around i read that nobody has been able to recover a phone after getting this far without replacing it if under warranty or using a riff box to re flash. those threads i found where a bit old, so I'm wondering if anything changed, or if anybody is willing to give some advice aside from using it as a door stop or parts to try and resurrect this phone. THANKS IN ADVANCE.
You can send the phone in for JTAG, mobiletechvideo has a great reputation I believe its $50 but that's about your only option to get it working.
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
no other option than that huh Guess its going in for repair lol thanks.
