I'm not sure what the differences are between the different bricks (soft/hard) but here's what happened with my phone:
I just tried to install a mod to use the power button as a shutter for the camera (had CMW TouchWiz Jellybean installed working fine) but that MAY have been for the international version. The OP didn't specify and I decided to try it to find out. Then I installed a custom reboot app and used that to reboot my phone. Ended up with my phone not being able to turn on. I can't get into download or recovery mode via button combos, but when I have it plugged in, I see the red (orange?) LED light come on.
I scoured the forums for a fix for this and it seems the USB jig is the only option for whats happened to my phone. If someone knows another way, I'm all ears! I backup my phone just about weekly so I have everything (other than a USB jig) to restore my phone to a working version.
What I'm wondering is would a USB jig get my phone into download mode? Again, I'm not sure what "brick" has happened to my phone so I just want to make sure a USB jig would work.
Ok this is my advice:
First make sure your battery is charged. Make sure its NOT plugged in when you attempt to get into Fastboot or Recovery. After your unplugged, hit the power button and let it go then hold home button and volume up to go to recovery.
IT has to work.
My battery is fully charged. I tried it on my cousins SGS3 and it showed 98%. I just tried what you said (hit the power button, let go then hold home and volume up buttons) and still no dice. I've also tried the normal way of getting into recovery (holding down all three power, volume up, and home buttons) with no avail.
It doesn't make sense to me (I'm fairly familiar with Android phones since the G1) since the custom reboot app is just that; a custom reboot. The mod should have downloaded into the Downloads folder which means nothing else other than my TouchWiz Jelly Bean CWM is in the root folder for recovery. Is there any way Dolphin Browser would've downloaded the mod into the root folder? If so, is there a way I can check via my PC?
EDIT: I went digging around the interwebs for more info on what's happened to my phone and I found that my phone also shows the QHSUSB_LOAD driver installation when plugged into my PC. From what I can gather, that seems to be a sign that I flashed an itnl ROM on my SGS3 and hardbricked my phone. It still doesn't make sense to me since I didn't flash anything after downloading the mod/custom reboot app.
EDIT2: I went to a local Sprint store to see if they could shed some light on it. I told them I downloaded a file and an app, went to reboot my phone and now it won't turn on (which is what I did, just didn't mention it was already rooted). He tried to figure out and came up with nothing since he said every browser app should download into its own folder and not the root folder (I think he knew my phone was rooted but didn't want to say anything. Cool guy). Before I get shamed for not taking responsibility for my actions, I offered to pay for a new phone replacement but the technician was kind enough to order a new one for free. While I will get a replacement phone Monday/Tuesday, I'd still like input as to what happened. It'd be helpful to know so others don't make whatever the same mistake I made.
Okay update. I called the store and they won't be able to get the phone for awhile so I'm back to wondering if a USB jig would work.
Not sure if a usb jig will work or not but they are easy enough to make or you can buy one.
If the button combo wont turn it on a jig wont either. Sounds like you hard bricked and are gonna need jtag to fix it. Do you have a link to what you flashed
I wish I did. I've been trying to find it again, but I can't even seem to remember the name.
On zedomax's guide on making a USB jig, he says it can save hard-bricked phones. So should I just ignore that?

Ya i hate to be a downer but i wanna say "I called it" ahead of time.
QHSUSB_DLOAD is the kiss of death. Your phone is a doorstop and the jig is a no go. Trust me on this one

If its any consolation tho, look up the htc unbricking project. A few htc phones were able to be brought back to life in that mode. Not saying itd be anywhere near as easy to do but its something ive messed with every time ive managed to brick my s3. (Im on #4) I think eventually someone will be able to resurect these in a similar way. Im sure its possible.

Same problem with my SGH-R530., The phone doesnt boot up, but I get the red LED light when I plug it in without the battery, and my computer recognizes a new device. I found the QHSUSB_DLOAD drivers and now the phone shows up in Device Manager as a QComm_DLoad 9008 (something like that)...I can get the COM Port in yellow using Odin 3.85, DFS sees it as being in download mode...every program I use can recognize the device, I just can't get anything to flash. I also tried the anyway jig...no luck there. If anyone finds a solution PLEASE share. There are a lot of people with this issue. I'm just switching from HTC to Samsung, and I didn't realize that there were so many different model numbers for the SG3. I was flashing and I'm sure it was some firmware for a different model that caused the brick. As far as I can tell from what I've read, JTAG is the only fix.

If your SGS3 won't power on to any mode and you just get a blank screen, a USB jig will not work. You've hard-bricked your phone and if you're looking to fix it, JTAG is the way to go (around $60 I believe) unless you just want to replace it via your carrier.

Thanks for the confirmation! Since my phone is for US Cellular and I am not a customer of theirs (I was flashing it to my carrier), I can't ask US Cellular for a replacement! Can anyone confirm that Samsung doesn't do warranty replacements for this type of problem? If that's so, my next step is sending it to mobiletechvideo.

Samsung will do the warranty replacement as long as there is no physical damage, the device itself is warranted for 12 months and battery 18 months. As long as the device has no to minor physical damage it will be replaced for free for hardware failure, acceptable physical damage is minor scratches, no obvious dents, dings, cracks or deep scratches/gouges. If there is alot of physical damage they will still replace or repair it but there will be a free involved.

Okay, so I got my new AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III less than a month ago.
My friend helped me in the past few days to root and install cyanogenmod 10. Everything was still fine, until I did something in some kind of pixel density changing app. When rebooting, it only showed the Samsung and Samsung Galaxy S III screens when booting up, but went no further. I wiped everything and restored the last backup I made (advanced restore). Everything ran fine again, with all the original factory stuff. I decided to try and see if I could reinstall cm10 (wiped everything, installed zip, rebooted), and it was successful. Then I decided I wanted to wipe that and try out Energy HD 2.0. Once trying to install the zip, it returned an error message and aborted. I then decided to scrap that idea and just go back to the original factory rom and everything. So I once again wiped and restored my last backup. Upon hitting Reboot, it just went black and didn't turn on again. Now I am completely unable to turn it on, charge it, go into cwm recovery, or download mode. Plugging into the computer just pops a driver install message for QHSUSB_LOAD. Never has anything, even the LED, so much as blinked.
Can somebody please help me? I just would like to know if there is a way to get it working. I'd be very grateful, thanks!
*detail, meaning just what I was doing, as I do not remember exact error codes and such.
Try reflashing. What stock image are you using?

Is it even possible to re-flash a recovery image (from Odin3) when the device cannot enter download mode?
I think it may have been CWM Recovery v5.0.4.2 or something that I originally installed/flashed (can't check right now though, because I was kicked off my computer). Then it had upgraded to v6.something later on my phone.

Yeah I would say your bootloader is messed up and the only way to breath life back into your phone is jtag repairs. I had a problem identicle to yours and I searched the net for a week solid trying to figure out how to fix it without having to fork over the money.. but alas had to send it. Luckily the guy who provides the repairs is amazing at what he does. Phone will be back in your hands within a few days if you're from the states.

Hmm, okay. I wonder then why only JTAG Repairs knows how to fix this stuff, and the information isn't widely available.
And so if I do send it to jtag, then I guess I'll be getting it back within a few days, 'cause I live in the US.

Well there is a way for you to do the jtag repairs yourself... but i wouldn't touch the process with a 10 foot pole lol... I would rather let a pro do things like that... just youtube jtag repair and take a look at some of the process.... way beyond my comprehension atleast..

Ah, I suppose you're right. Not to mention expensive. That equipment probably costs more than having them fix it. Though it would probably be worth it of you bricked it on a regular basis.
So my phone was working fine all day. I pull it out of my pocket and the screen is black. Tried to turn it off and back on with the power button but that did nothing. I pulled the battery out and put it back in and then it went to the first screen that says "Samsung Galaxy SIII" and permanently froze there. I did root it a few months ago and never had a problem with it. I'm able to load Odin on the phone but I can't get to the factory reset screen by doing Volume+UP+Power. I tried using Odin and putting back in the official firmware but it gets stuck at "NAND Write Start!!"
After working with it for a bit, now whenever I turn it on it and don't do anything else it goes straight to the Downloader and says:
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again"
I can still go into the downloader but that Nand Write issue still.
Seriously, any help will be appreciated.
Recovery is, power up & HOME & Power. Try that again hold it for about 5 seconds. After having the phone on the charger for a while though and not plugged in.

Tried that and the same "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue, Please select recover mode in Kies and try again" came up.

Since ODIN can see your phone have you tried to install CWM from ODIN and then restore a backup from CWM?
If you do not have a backup search the forum, there is a nandroid in there somewhere you should be able to use. Stick it on your extsd card, then flash it with CWM.

Hey man, I literally just had this conversation with someone else a few days ago about the exact same error being throw but on an SGS2.
Here is a snippit of our PM (where it says I, that is me not him),
I have an S3 but my wife has an S2. Is your S2 also Tmobile or is it ATT, Skyrocket or I9100? This thread is for the Skyrocket but you'll get the idea of what to do. I also punched in firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in kies and try again galaxy s2 in Google and got a crap-ton of answers. Seems pretty common. As long as you have power, you can usually get out of it. It is when you have no glint of power that you should worry, as you know from your S3's.

Sure I'd appreciate that. As a last resort I'd bring it to a phone repair shop and give them a shot at it. If all else fails I'll screw it up beyond repair so Samsung won't be able to tell it was rooted.
It's called Sudden Death Syndrome, and it's when the eMMC chip (internal memory) dies. So far it's pretty common in i9300's (international S3). The only way to fix it is to get the motherboard or entire phone replaced because it's impossible to replace the parts that go bad.

The good news is that when the phone [basically] dies because of this, when you go into Download Mode (the screen that shows all the info in the top left corner), it will always say "CUSTOM", whether or not you're rooted, because it can't read from the internal memory chip. People have sent their phones in with custom ROMs and have gotten them repaired. Worst case, you play dumb.

I've only read about 2 incidents where the company sent the phone back saying it was tampered with and that was since the MyTouch 3G... been stocking the forums for quite some time, I have serious doubts you will be able to do anything but send it in.

Bumping my thread back up. Those ****ers told me that it was repaired over live chat and on the phone. When I got the phone back it wasn't changed at all.I went on live support again and they told me that the device was rooted and that there was nothing they can do and ****ing left the chat.
If anyone has ANY advice it is greatly appreciated..

Getting a new error when I try to use Odin: There is no PIT partition.

For the record I did search the forum (pretty quickly) and didn't find what I was looking for so I hope I'm not reposting the same issue.
So I was flashing the Slim Bean 4.2.2 rom to my galaxy s3 using goomanager and i think my phone is hard bricked.
In goomanager it allows you to select multiple zips to flash, and I'm pretty sure they flash in the order they are listed. Well i planned to flash the Slim-i9300-4.2.2.build.6-OFFICIAL (the rom itself), Slim_Gapps.4.2.2.build.6 (google apps for the rom), and Extras.4.2.2.build.6 (extras specific to the rom) for the Slim Bean rom from the slimroms site.
I had the Extras.4.2.2.build.6 zip listed first then accidentally pressed the flash button and without thought confirmed my actions in the pop up window (Yes i'm an idiot). So it rebooted and went through some script then my phone went black.
It wont go into download mode (home, power, vol down), it won't display anything on the screen, and it wont power on. My computer recognizes it and shows that it is connected. I don't know if that will do anything it terms of fixing it on my own? I haven't read up on bricked phones too much but i'm pretty sure its hard bricked.
Sooooooo, first off does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do?
-If i were to take it to a Sprint store what would they say? I've had it for a year and I don't think i have any warranty (granted i know rooting my phone would technically void it anyways). If it doesn't power on or do anything could I say it turned off in the middle of the 4.1.2 OTA update and resulted in its current state?
-Would a usb JIG boot my phone into download mode and fix my problem?
-Is a jtag service my only option?
-If it is jtag does anyone know a place around the Louisville, KY area that does this sort of thing? I google searched but didn't find anything local.

"Slim-i9300-4.2.2.build.6-OFFICIAL" that is the international model version of the ROM. Flashing International ROMs hard brick your phone. So yes, you do have a hard brick. As to taking it to sprint, Idk if they'll do anything for you especially if you have no insurance or warranty. Sorry bud
Well your problem is not that you flashed in the wrong order. Your problem is that you flashed a rom from the International S3 (i9300) not the sprint SPH-L710. You attempted to turn your Sprint phone into an International S3. This flashed completely different partitions onto your device. JTAG is the only way to fix it. They have to open the device and repartition everything. Mobiltech is the way to go. My advice in the future is if you don't find the rom in the Sprint Galaxy S3 forums do not flash it.

JTAG is in fact the only way to repair it. Yes guaranteed it will be fixed.

Just do more research next time before flashing. And as the person above said, don't flash anything that isn't on the sprint GS3 forums.

Is JTAG service the only way to fix it/will that fix it?
Ya, I didn't know what they'd do if i played dumb (i know, thats bad, but im desperate) and said it did this during the official OTA update.

Unfortunately yes you are hard bricked and it sucks. JTAG will fix it Google it there are good services out there for about $60 and week or so turn around.
If you pay for insurance you could also take it to sprint and tell them it won't boot and they should replace it for a deductible. Some will call this fraud but the way I see it if you pay for insurance it is there to cover mistakes. You didn't mean to brick it just like some one who dropped it in a pool didn't mean to ruin their phone.

Thanks for the quick response everyone. I really appreciate it. I feel dumb. I usually do my research, but I was bord and a spur of the moment action got me in trouble this time.
I guess I'll run to the sprint store tomorrow and see what they can do, if anything.
If they can't do anything, mobiletech it is! It looks to be a reliable site. Will my phone be active on the sprint network still after the JTAG? or will I have to do anything to it? I also assume I will get all the text messages and what not that my phone is currently incapable of receiving now?
Any thing else I should know about the JTAG or my phones hard bricked state before I go ahead with it since we are on the subject and I don't want this to happen again.

I doubt you will get any texts, sprint is not saving to deliver them later. Unless your using Google Voice. Your phone will be up and running rom flashed but it won't activate until you log into it with your google ID, just like when you get in the box brand new.

i got a samsung gs3 yesterday, i loved everything but battery life, lastnight i used George Holtz's "towel root" and rooted my phone, added super user and rom toolbox, upgraded my recovery to clockwork mod basic, and proceded to flash to "flashingdroid version 2.2" it went thru everything and installed the rom, when it tried to reboot, it went black... now it does nothing, computer tries to recognize it, abut i cant get it to download mode, and i cant get it into recovery mode... it does not show charge picture when plugged in and if i take the battery out, plug it in, then insert the battery i get a red light... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

What model is your phone? You flashed a i9300 ROM, this is the sub-forum for the i747.
its the i747, i before looking today never knew there were more than 1 model of the GS3, is it possible to fix it?

my problem is my phone does NOT vibrate when power button is pressed, it isnt doing ANYTHING at ALL, the red charging light only comes on when battery is left out and the phone is plugged in, light turns off after a minute or so of the battery being installed, to me it seems like less rom flash related, and more failure in the board, but im not good at this stuff so im probably wrong, i bought a verizon one (i535) for 50 bucks (pretty banged up touchscreen is cracked in several places i got it without a back cover,but it works,) to get me by but i miss my 4g on straight talk =( i wish i had just left it alone, it was clean just 1 crack in the touch screen wires ans such for lcdanddigitizer got cut by accient while trying to modify midframe for verizon board, i sure as hell cant afford the att version for a while 150-260 for a decent i747, is it possible that a JTAG service would be able to bring it to life or even one of those dongles to force recovery?

It could be a board failure but it happened right after you flashed the ROM which leads me to believe it is software related.
A dongle is not going to help since the phone won't even power up. A jtag service would be your best and quickest option. You should try and find a shop that will guarantee to revive the phone or you pay nothing.

Flashing an i9300 rom is guaranteed to hard brick the device and cause exactly what you described. If you follow the instructions in the thread linked in an above post it probably has a 90% chance of fixing it.
I am 99% certain it is not a hardware failure. Others have done the exact same thing and were able to fix it by using the instructions in that thread.

i found one on ebay, full refund short of a 5 dollar shipping cost for return shipping, once i have money that i can spend ill sure as hell be giving it a shot
Or you can attempt to fix it for free.....but I suppose that is up to you.

either way its gonna cost me a little cash, i dont have a 16 gig sd card, forgive me for being so noob but the sd card trick CAN work for my case?? i know for a fact i cant do anythingto my phone right now as it wont even power on, but if you BELIEVE it will work ill gove it a try
Unless you updated with the kk ota, you are probably on 4.3 firmware. I cannot guarantee it will work, but I believe the chances are pretty good that it will.
Just remember, if it doesn't work, dont give up on the first try. Many have had to run through the process several times before it would actually boot up again.
The only other tip I can think to give is to make sure you buy a decent sd card. It doesn't have to be top of the line, but there are tons of fake ones out there that would be less likely to work. If you can, try to buy one from an authorized dealer for whatever brand you are considering. This greatly reduces the chance of getting a bad card.

4.0.x was the last firmware, i never got to update it. i bought a PNY 16gb microSD HC class 4, it was 25 bucks at the local drug store, i was hoping for a class 6 - 10 but i believe it is a good quality card, maybe you would know better?
I won't lie, I am not a big fan of PNY, but as long as its the real thing, I think it should work. Class 6 or better is recommended, but it has worked on class 4 cards too. At this point, the only thing left to do is give it a shot. Good luck!
