[Q] Black Crush on the Note 2? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I followed the original Galaxy Note rather closely since its release last year.
The only thing that ever stopped me from purchasing one was the black crush/screen artifact-ing during videos.
I understand it isn't a huge issue for most, and that adjusting the gamma ratio of the blacks helped reduce the crush to a minimum. But for something that would get a larger screened device FOR watching movies and videos on youtube, having a screen problem stopped me from getting it.
On most of the videos of the Note 2, it doesnt seem to be affected by the black crush issue, probably because its a different screen hardware/size. I guess we won't be able to tell if the N2 will be affected by this issue until the phone comes out, but do you think that this will be in the next Note?

Got a question for you and with the answer you will answer to your own question.
Have you seen "black crush" on Rgb screens? Also I own a nexus and a note and I don't have /never noticed that issue

[Q] Can someone confirm about video playback - black crush is eliminated on Note II?

I am seriously considering buying the Note II within the next few weeks.
But want to verify if the black clipping crush issue which was plaguing the original note is not happening on the new one.
seems like we have this issue on S III as well,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745279
can someone confirm otherwise ?
Mine is the uk version and can confirm that the black crush problem is NO longer there...

[Q] Note 2 screen different from the others?

When I compare 2 Sgn2 side by side then I notice there is a difference in both the screens as one is bit darker and sharper whereas the other one is lighter and normal
Both has screen protectors of the different company's . So can it be because of that or I think my handset screen is faulty ?
I compared some sgn2, and I found some screens are different, but every screens were same w/ same firmware. So, I can't say any clever, but it's maybe related to installed firmware also.
Both the firmwares are same and with the latest updates installed
Maybe different screens from sharp sony etc??

As I have checked both the devices came from diffrent locations ie Korea and Vietnam
Can that be the reason ?
Probably the protectors. I've tried a few different ones in the past few weeks and notice a VERY big difference..

Thats wat I was also thinking but was not sure that whether diffrent protectors can make the diffrence but both was the glossy

I checked many displays of both s3 and note2.....none of them r similar especially devices made in korea and vietnam differ a lot.....

Does that mean I have a faulty display

What about the screen mode setting? Settings>display>screen mode.
Everything is set up screen on dynamic , power savings off , adjust screen tone off , brightness on high
Still it's bit dimmer and white is on yellowish tone

No not at all....these things r common in all the devices which includes apple also.....nothing to worry enjoy ur device unless u have a tint or pixel related problems

If this is true than that sucks... I've been comparing the screens of my Note 1 and Note 2 and unfortunately the screen on my Note 1 is sharper and brighter. Videos are more detailed etc. My Note 2 is made in vietnam, I think, because of the manuals inside says "printed in vietnam".
I think I'm going to return my Note 2 as I'm not that happy with the screen quality.
And LOL at the above post. "these things r common in all the devices which includes apple also.". Why do many people always have to use tu-quoque arguments and point at apple?
You can check where your model was made by looking under the battery, on the device.
Screens are in order....

Best to see on the phone itself.
Mine was made in Vietnam and the screen seems fine to me. I think the differences are down to the grades of glass used.
I had a similar problem with my iPad 3 and apple said that they use different grades of glass that can cause tint/colour problems between devices.

Both the Note 1 and 2 have way better screen than the S2, no argument there! But what I'm talking about is the screen of the Note 2 compared to the Note 1. Even though it's very sharp and good, it's not as sharp and bright as the Note 1.
The difference might not be noticeable for some people who don't care about that or hasn't had them both so they can't compare. But for me it's very noticeable..

The Note 1 has a pentile screen which makes everything look slightly more jagged than the Note 2.

[Q] Pages deforming when scrolling?

Altough there is a similar thread in Nexus10 forum, I am posting here the same question.
Just got my Note8, and i have noticed imediately this behaviour: when scrolling in portrait mode, pages are deforming, most notably on the left side. For me this is quite disturbing (this is my first Android tablet). I have used a Nexus7 for few days and did not notice such thing.
Here is the video from the other thread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4-tKflikYY&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
Is anyone experiencing the same? I wonder if this is a manufacturing defect and should return the tablet, as in the N10 thread someone does not recognize this behaviour.

Thanks for the feedback. I went back to shop and confirmed it with the demo tablet. The same behaviour seen on the Ipad retina too. Strange enough, sony tablet z was ok, with more pixels than our tablet. Hopefully a custom ROM can solve this one.

My Nexus 7 I/O Edition does the same thing. Maybe we just have special eyes? A lot of people simply don't see it.

I have only used a Nexus7 32G model and haven't noticed this one (I will ask my friend to test it for me). Nexus7 and Note8 have the same CPU and same resolution, but different GPU, different screen type and screen size. Can't be our eyes, can it? (lol)

They actually have completely different CPUs. The Nexus 7 has a Tegra 3, the Note 8.0 has an Exynos 4412.

I thought that's the chipset, and the CPU core is a Cortex-A9. Looking at the specs for Ipad3, it using the same Cortex core (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_Cortex-A9_MPCore)
That's an interesting thought, I wonder if the Infinity tab, which has high resolution and uses the same core CPU exhibits the same behaviour when scrolling. I'll came back if i have the chance to test it.
I just watched the .mov format file a couple of times, and I'd tried the youtube as well, and I'm still not sure what is being described.
Is this a report that the text is blurring a little as the page is scrolled rapidly up and down?
Not a big issue for me, as I can't read text until it stops moving unless I want to get carsick right here on the couch
It's not enough of a lag between when the page stops moving and when the text is sharp that I notice it, if that is what the video's highlighting.
One thing you can try is getting into developer options and checking the settings for "force GPU rendering" and "disable hardware overlays"
I force gpu rendering and do not disable hardware overlays. On my device, that pair of settings gives me the best quadrant graphics scores. So I tell myself I notice the difference
I have already tried the trick with developer options, and didn't get any improvment.
The issue, for me, is not the text blur during scroll. It is that horizontal lines or text or photos are not horizontal anymore, but oblique, during scroll.
Try, for example, scrolling a google search result in browser, keeping your finger on the screen. I see the right side of the screen going faster than the left side of the screen, hence the sensation of deforming. The same effect i get when scrolling pictures in gallery or tumblr. If i scroll up and down several times the effect is obvious.
I have tested today more devices (Asus TF300, Ipad2) and noticed this effect. Despite my previous statement, tablet Z has the same.
I tend now to believe this as being a "normal" behaviour.
Yes, it's more of a bending and deforming of lines that should be straight when scrolling. Exactly like was described in the post above.
I guess I'm just used to the 0 lag of an AMOLED display...
Just a thought. Could it be a visual illusion? Like when you hold a pencil near one end with two fingers and wave it up and down, the pencil appears to be bending but in reality it is not.

You just blew my mind maybe
EDIT: Thought about it, nope. My Nexus 7 does the same but the OTHER way, horizontal instead of vertical.
Never noticed anything like that on my note n5110, but i definitely see what the problem is on the video above...it's wobbly. Will check my device again later and let you know. Doesn't seem normal to me but maybe I just never noticed it on my note.
EDIT: Wow I finally see it on my device. It took a lot of playing around, but I managed to consistently reproduce the issue by using tapatalk and scrolling up and down slowly while in portrait mode. I also had to hold the Note further away than I normally would to see the effect. Crazy optical! Since I don't really notice it in everyday situations though it won't be bothersome for me, but I definitely see how it might be annoying for someone who notices it more often. You have some sharp eyes :thumbup:
so is that issue present in all N8.0 devices?

So did I until I finally noticed it. Doesn't mean they are wrong though.
I noticed it on EVERY video review of the device:

6.0.1

So did the 6.0.1 update help the screen appearance any? And did it help with the lag problems that I've read about. My son wants this phone and he had an htc one m8 and if like to know if this is really an improvement without regards to software updates. Thanks to those who answer

Never had a screen problem on mine. Battery is better than the m8 plus updates day one. Lag isn't a common occurrence either.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
The screen is hardware - no software update will make it look any different. The amoled screen of the M8 looks a lot brighter and better than the LCD in the Nexus 5, and that is something you only notice if you hold them side-by-side (and forget about after a day).
I came form th HTC M8 and I am very pleased with this phone. The only lag is loading graphic intensive games. They do take a lot longer to load than on the M8 but I don't care about that.
That also may be something removing encryption on /data will take care of - haven't tried that yet. I am pretty convinced the complaints about lag come from gamers and gamers only. For everything else it's plenty fast.

6.0.1 did fix an issue with black levels appearing grey when playing hardware accelerated video, but that's the only software display issue I've heard of. You might have noticed that on your 6p already.
Otherwise the screen on the 5x is a bit bigger and has more accurate colors compared to the M8. It's about the same size but much lighter. One area that would be a downgrade is the external speaker on the 5x won't compare versus the stereo speakers on the M8 but otherwise would be a solid upgrade and running Android 6 out of the box.

Pixel XL PWM

I hope the Pixel and Pixel XL don't use PWM flickering AMOLED screens as it causes me headaches and near seizzures. I know the Nexus 6 and 6P did :
We will see when more photos and videos come out.
I made a similar thread about the Note7 using PWM here.
I thought I saw the PWM scrolling bars when watching one of the videos. Do not count on it. I don't think any smartphones with AMOLED displays use flicker-free over PWM.

Well my friend has a Galaxy S i9000 (the original from 2010 ), another has the S2. Both are flicker free.
My mother has a Galaxy S4 she's planning to replace soon so I had the idea of trying to remove the PWM code in the kernel. I was doing research of the kernel source and might have seen the AMOLED PWM code in there
