Any cases with built in USB OTG - Galaxy S III Accessories

After seeing the ego case with a built in usb drive i was wondering if there was a case that was the same but the usb drive actually would plug in the phone instead of the case just holding in the flash drive. I mean how awesome would it be to have a slot in the back of the case that you can slide a usb drive into and expand your storage and then take it out and plug it in to your pc? I thought of making my own with a otterbox and otg cable but I have to figure out a design first

We think alike! When I first saw these cases I thought about it extending down a tad and having a little u shape adapter that plugged into both for live storage access, that would be sweet!
Sent from my SPH-L710

the issue would be that any time you have the case on, your phone is feeding power to the OTG.
that means your battery will not last as long, and you have to remove the case (which would be plugged into your USB of your phone, and leaving it in OTG mode all the time) to charge.

USB data cable

Do any of you guys and gals know of an aftermarket cable that will work with the captivate. I lost the original one that came with the phone. Have since bought two different chargers, one from the att store (zero charger), and they charge the phone but don't put it on USB mode like the original one did when I plug it to a laptop.
Sent from my rooted Cappy.
All you need is a standard MicroUSB to USB cable. Make sure it's a standard cable, and not a "charge only" cable though.
A bit of advise, generally if you buy a cable that isn't a Samsung USB cable, you're going to have to take a razor blade to your new cable and cut away some of the rubber around the MicroUSB plug. You'll see that untrimmed, you might have a hard time getting the cable secured in the phone's port.
Thanks man. I actually just noticed the "charging only cable" written on the tag on the cable. Now I know what to look for. And you're right, the one I bought from a gas station was always popping out. The one from att fits like a glove though.
Sent from my rooted Cappy.
All it takes is a razor blade or something similar, and a few seconds. I use a bunch of generic USB cables which all have fat plug heads. Trimming a little of the rubber off and they all work perfect.
Weird, for some reason my original cable from ATT now is really loose, I have to like set the phone down a certain way to keep it charging/plugged in.
The only cables that now do fit snuggly are the ones from my external mini hard drives with the fat head, haha, I wonder why...my captivate still looks normal, can't figure it out.
I guess I should see if my normal cable fits with my externals or falls out of those too, if so it would be the cable. But it seems weird that the fat headed cables fit snuggly with my captivate, so that makes me think maybe its the captivate.
long winded stupid post, sorry.
i bought a blackberry cable from best buy... data and charging... 16 bucks. but when ever your puppy ate your data cable in the middle of the night and you're phone is at 30% battery, ya tend to pay for it...

Check out www all4cellular DOT com
They have the OEM Samsung Captivate (U.S./Edison) Wall Charger and USB Charging+Data Cable for $6.95 + $2 Shipping.
The item number is "eta0u60jbe". But this item # includes BOTH the USB Wall Charger (# ETA0U60JBE) AND the USB-to-Micro USB data/charging Cable (# ECC1DU2BBE)!
I bought two of these and they are EXACTLY like the original Charger and ~5ft. USB Cable that comes with the Captivate. They are OEM/Samsung-branded and labeled and are not Chinese-made knock-offs. I am in SoCal and received them within a few days of ordering.
Here's a direct link:

I had similar issues, till I realized that the problem was with the sliding door for the microUSB port - make sure it is pushed all the way back (you may hear a click) - its only then that all my MicroUSB cables fit w/out any modifications to them.
as always YMMV.

I second the Monoprice.com recommendation. I buy ALL my cables there. The heads on their micro USB cables are too large to plug into the Captivate unmodified, but I used a Dremel to fix that.
Both of my Monoprice cables are going strong, in contrast with my OEM cable, which started out excellent, but is now so loose as to not maintain a connection unless the phone and cable are precisely arranged.

I have a 1009 model. Assuming that means it was manufactured Sept,2010. Now to find a microUSB
We have some micro USB 5' Cables coming in Monday. If they are like the sample they not only fit the Captivate properly, but when plugged into our new Car Plug ->USB (2100mA) adapter, my Captivate shows "Charging (AC) ".
We originally brought in the Hi-Power USB car adapter so iPad & Tablet customers could both run & charge at the same time. We have had enough request from customers looking to use it with Smart Phones, that I had to find the best matching cable.

Monoprice...ALWAYS!!
As mentioned, get your cables from monoprice. I mean, you just can't beat a usb cable for $2. If it needs trimmed, I usually just use a razor knife/box cutter to remove the bulk, and it works perfectly. I actually had to order a 25ft. VGA cable from them a couple of days ago...$8. Seriously. Definitely the cheapest place I've seen to buy cables.

[Q] Soo I learned this about my car charger.........

I drive a 08 F-150 and I put my phone in my cupholder and it bends my charger putting the weight of the phone on it and recently it started to bend the contact port that receives electricity and I would connect my phone but it would say connected but would drain my battery so I have to bend charger cables to charge my phone( ive tried many) and one day I put my phone connected to my car charger and it was powered off and than I looked and my phone was in download mode and something got downloaded I then rebooted my phone and my triangle was gone!!!!!!! Is it possible my charger turned into a usb jig? And anybody have an ideas on maybe moving the contact to its original position? Also when plugged intoi a computer itll charge but needs to bent up on the port of my phone to be usb recognized.
Or a car charger that bends around the phone? like at a 90 angle?

sounds like out of no where it turned into a jig by being at a 90• angle. im not sure but it may sound like that. just charge it with the headphone side down, charger port up!

Its possible, but not probable. It would be a combination of only certain pins transferring current, and the resistance only being like 300k ohms. Totally possible over time i suppose with a faulty connection.

I've been using a simple $6.00 vent mounted holder from Walmart ever since my HTC Mogul days. It sure beats breaking your charging port.
This is why I hate having the charger port on the BOTTOM of the phone... Its stupid design because that's the part of the phone that is going to be bumping up against something most of the time. It really should be next to the headphone jack.
I purchased a right-angle USB cable about a month after I got my phone, and I love it. I can actually set my phone in a cup holder in the car with it charging and NOT feel like I'm going to break the USB port.

Longer USB cable

I was wondering if anyone has bought a longer USB cable, the one that came with the AT&T Ion is too short and the phone has to be on the floor while charging.
A cable might seem like something so basic that any cable with the right connectors should work, but apparently not. The Kindle has the same type of port and the Ion and yet the Kindle cable doesn't charge the ion (when used with the Ion power adapter, of course). So if you've found a long USB cable that works, please post it here.
I think I saw one in a Japanese store the other day that was circum $5 for a 6 ft cable, and I'm gonna go buy it tomorrow. I'll report back if it works or not.

Used Ion Power plug - 6' HTC Micro USB cable worked well.
I had a longer cable from my Xperia X10, so fortunately that worked out for me. I have succesfully used Blackberry, Samsung, and generic cables though. You can get a Sony Ericsson cable for about $6 on Amazon too.

I don't think any cable will work. Just to be sure, I tried the Kindle cable with the Ion adapter again, and it also didn't work. That cable connects to the computer fine, and the charge seemed stable, but when used with the wall plug it wasn't charging steadily although the LED light on the phone was on all the time.

The problem with some micro-usb cable like the one I bought from Wal-Mart is that they do not have an extra line that allows for data connections to computers and that extra power is what keeps the phone charging stable.

I use this 6' cable from AmazonBasics

Works great for data or charge. I travel with it VERY frequently and I abuse it. Used it for just under a year with my x10 and the phone-end started getting loose. Amazon replaced it free and my new one has been going strong for almost a year. I'm honestly surprised they last as long as they do the abuse I put them through

I got a mediabridge 6 ft cable from Amazon, it wasn't as cheap as some of the others posted here (I ordered before that post). Tried it during the weekend and it worked perfectly, so something must be missing from the Kindle cable.
I just recently went to Kyoto, and accidentally left my charger in the hotel (usual pretty careful, but eh). So I just went to the nearest tech shop and bought a nice 1.5 meter cable, and it's so much nicer. Kinda makes me glad I left the damn charger.

Any micro usb will work now the only difference is that the ones that say "file transfer" are for transfer and charging, the ones for "charging" are for charging only i made the mistake of trying to get the one from my truck to transfer data.. didnt happen lol had to wait till i got to my house and use the right cable. may be my luck, would like to see if there is a true difference
Just got it this week. $3
Check this out on AMZN:
Samsung OEM Micro USB Data Charging Cable (5 ft/1.5m)

Also, anybody know if the ION will support an OTG cable?
from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Its been touched on, but just in case. The Ion uses a micro USB connection, that is the socket on the phone itself. There are lots of connections that look like micro USB, but aren't...obviously those won't work, as they don't fit. So when buying a longer cable, make sure its Micro USB (not Mini USB, by they way...that too is different)
Also, as mentioned, some older cables..especially those that came with some older cell phones, would be power only...no data transfer ability (AT&T loved including these with older Samsung phones, as they wanted you to buy a $30 data cable before leaving the store). They'll charge the phone from a wall or a computer, but with hit or miss results..some will confuse the phone, as it doesn't know what type of connection it has, others will charge very slow, etc. there is no reason anymore to buy a power only cable, especially considering all these cables are cheap. I lucked out, my logitech mouse came with a 6 foot micro USB data cable for adjusting its button configuration and charging...so i just use that with the wall mount, works great.
I ordered a bunch of USB extension cables from eBay, my cable is like 14 feet long now lol they are cheap

If you are using the provided usb cable then it should not be that tight as you are saying.
But there are many after-market usb cables which can be either too tight or too loose.
I would suggest you go to amazon.com and get the retail Samsung brand usb cable for the phone
and you should not have any problems. I got one from Amazon for less than $4 bucks shipped.
By having a usb cable which is really tight and hard to plug in it can eventually loosen the usb port on the phone.

Why hasn't this been invented yet?

So now we have extended battery cases right? And we have micro usb flashdrive for phones... So why not combine the two and have an extended battery/storage case? If Sombody makes this all I ask for is one of them lol.

This is actually not a bad idea. When i plug the HTC One to a USB port in the computer, it's detected as a USB drive and the yellow light goes on, meaning it's charging as well as allowing access to the storage partition. In theory, a charging case with storage functionality should be possible, but i think you'll need some OS of some type running on memory in the extended battery case, to allow extended storage via USB functionality. Hopefully, i'm wrong or this could be slightly more complicated that it seems.

It would definitely need some kind of programming but I think it's possible. Not with my limited knowledge but I think if somebody figured it out they could make some bucks. I mean i have gotten my phone to recognize a flash drive through one of those male micro usb to female usb cords. So if it was programmed with the drivers it needed I dont see why it wouldn't work.

Indeed, there's a lot of potential if one of those battery case manufacturers decided to extend the integrated features beyond just extra battery life. Maybe through Java Card technology? As it allows applications to run with "very limited memory and processing capabilities". So, a tiny integrated chip in the case should do it, which wouldn't affect the battery level from the case too much, and the availability of a microSD card slot in the battery case would make this a definite winner. :good:
