[Q] Enable Background Data in Settings - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Recently went to Europe and had Verizon activate my SIM card and disabled it on my return.
When I got there, I got a message, "Enable Background Data in Settings." I still get the message.
Can you tell me what this does? I have never used 3G to access the internet - only WiFi.

It just allows your phone to send and receive data without you knowing it, in the background. It does such things as keep your email, weather, and account data synced without have to open up those apps and manually sync them.

[Q] unable to use browser but can update weather/fb/email etc?

I've got a bit of weird problem on HTC Desire.
I've noticed that whenever I'm using my mobile internet data (Vodafone Aus), I can't actually do any sort of web browsing, but I can use the facebook app, update the weather widget, retrieve email from hotmail + Gmail etc, basically everything that needs internet access except use the browser.
I've tried both the default and Dolphin HD with no luck - Google home page will load but that's only because its in the cache - I can't do any new Google searches etc.
I know the phone can access websites because I can browse the net when I connect to my uni's WiFi, or any other WiFi.
Wondering if there's some kind of mobile internet setting I should be changing that I'm not aware that might solve this?
I know I should call Vodafone and ask them to check if there's somehow a problem on my account on their end but figured I might ask on here first to see if anyone else has had anything like this happen before I do so - just so they don't turn around and tell me its the phone.
(when I went in to set up the plan, the lady specifically told me that they took no responsibility for their services working on a "non Vodafone phone")
Oh and I don't think its worthy to note, but just in case:
ever since I switched to the contract from pre-paid I haven't been able to send international text, despite having roaming activated. Since I switched plans when I got the new phone, I can't actually determine if its the contract, the phone, or both that's not letting me send (but I suspect its Vodafone - something else I need to hassle them about)

Sounds like you don't have some settings. Give Vodafone a ring and see if they can send the correct settings to your phone. They won't take responsibility but they can help you like that since your using their service. If that doesn't work, have a look in the APN settings.

Thanks Meaple, I'll have a go, although Vodafone generally redirects you to their website where you input your phone model and it gives you the APN values you need to put in, which I have done.
Having said that, I can't send MMS with my phone despite having their APN values, so I know the MMS part must be wrong somehow
- I didn't think it could be the APN because the internet isn't completely inaccessible? Is it possible for apps to be able to use the net while the browser can't?
Never mind - Solved my problem.
In my attempt to fix my MMS problem way back, I changed settings around and stupidly added the "MMS Port" and "MMS proxy" as the proxy + port for internet, without realising the actual options for those two were further down.
- Deleted those, and went back and re-did the setup for the MMS as per vodafone instructions, setting up a separate "VF PXT" APN
(in my search for solutions I'd found a post somewhere saying you could combine the information for MMS and internet into 1 APN, and that's what I had done)

[Q] How do you disable/remove AT&T Address Book?

Every time I open my address book (or at least the first time after a reboot) I get this AT&T address book verifying subscriber status popup that takes a while to complete. I have no interest in ever using that service so how can I disable the check and just stop using it at all?
I'm guessing that the answer might be root and remove bloatware but I'm hoping there's a way to just turn it off without rooting. Don't worry I'll be rooting sooner than later but for now I'd like to just get rid of that annoying delay.
I havent got my phone yet, should have it within the next 3 hours, but have you looked through the settings, and opened up the AT&T address book app and checked the settings within that app itself?
Yeah. Not seeing any settings for it or actually any AT&T Address Book App at all.
Yeah i finally got mine a few hours ago, but i dont see any options to disable it either.
I'm guessing this will be one of those annoyances that only root can salve.
Not sure about the s3 but on skyrocket I checked out the programs.. scrolled down to sync and disabled..
Rebooted and never got the error again.

Where exactly did you "check out the programs.. scroll down to sync and disable"?
I don't see anything about AT&T address book anywhere.
I have the same issue. Every so often when I go into my phonebook I have to wait for it to check the AT&T Address Book. So now there is a huge lag to access my contacts.
Why do carriers think they should be mobile phone designers? I wish they'd just leave the designing to the people who are good at it.
Over 10 years of buying my own phones out of contract for a reason. I've only had the phone for a few hours. I wonder what other lame surprises await....
Ok, I seemed to have fixed it. Not sure which action it was because I was just doing everything I could to make it stop.
First thing I did was to turn off AT&T phonebook in my online account. Log into www.attwireless.com. Under MyAT&T tab, mouse over "Wireless" and select "Usage & Recent Activity". Scroll down to "Members Shared Usage" and click on "view details of the number you're working on. Scroll down to "Minute Detail" and right under that is "Phonebook" with the option to turn it on or off.
At the same time I was doing a lot of flailing around in the the phone. I was Settings page in Contacts and I deleted all the AT&T BS contacts it auto inserted into the phone.
I rebooted and it stopped trying to access that AT&T phonebook. Hope this helps.

Now it will stop and the icon will be removed from the app list. You can do this for all of the apps that will not uninstall till we get root.

In step 3 when you say "the phone book" do you mean the app called Contacts that has an icon that looks like a phone book? When I disable that app my phone dialer icon disappeared making it so I couldn't dial out. Had to re-enable it.
Otherwise, I dont have an app named Phone Book.

My AT&T and YP.
I was trying to disable the AT&T Address Book as well. I found out you disable AT&T Messages. Works like a charm.

I can confirm this method mentioned by Phoenyx worked. For me at least. No more AT&T Addressbook confirmation dialog when I go to Contacts. :good:

Yes, I just tried this as well instead of what I posted earlier and it also worked. I didn't know there was a phonebook option in my online AT&T account.

I just turned off the AT&T phonebook as you described and the pop-up goes away. Didn't need to do anything else.

Hi I just got my phone the same thing happened. I let it load (the second time it happened the first time I hit cancel). I got a page that was basically an ad for att's backup service, I scolled down to the bottom and clicked on close (or whatever the button did say). Now when I start contacts no more "checking subscriber status etc".
I have not rebooted yet but will and if it comes back I'll post, if it doesn't then at least on my Galaxy SIII it was a one time event.

secure https sites and apps no longer work

I have a very bizzare problem, as of the middle of last week if I try to go to a https site or use an app that uses https it will not find the server. I get a message in the browser "Data connectivity problem. A secure connection could not be established." or the app just says "cannot locate server." I have not changed a thing on here. on that day or before so it just doesn't make sense. Ive cleared cache, browser history, etc and this problem is both over 3G and over WiFi. Any ideas?
Try wiping cache and dalvik. If that doesn't work, make backups with titanium backup and a nandroid and wipe data and cache. Then restore your titanium backup backups.

It means you did not set up the APN for your carrier so you have data connection problem and not receiving text messages as a result.
Settings-> Mobile networks -> Access point name
Remember to press the menu button and chose Save when you're done.

errrr.... I get text messages fine. I also don't even have APN in that menu. And I havent changed anything this is something that just happened randomly, the phone is over 2 years old.

Question about MMS and data.

Just wondering if there is some root type way to make your phone use ONLY MMS data??
Ive checked with a community specifically for my carrier, and the way they say doesnt work (changing the APN to MMS only.. it lets me select it, but nothing works unless internet + MMS is selected as the type.
So basically im wondering if there is some "illegal" root type of way to allow the same thing? Ive disabled background data on all apps that would let me except messaging (it doesnt seem to have ever used any, and since I want MMS it seemed silly not to allow it).
android itself seems to use a bit of background data and wont let me disallow that.
for the time being im stuck to waiting until im in a wifi area to send or receive MMS as i dont have (or want) a data plan. with my carrier MMS uses the data system but does not charge as though using data - theyre included within unlimited messaging. but sadly they must use the data network. if i could find a way to make sure that ONLY picture messages sending or receiving are using data.... i would be extremely pleased.
Anyone have any experience this?

My carrier uses different APN for internet and MMS, and when I turn off GPRS, I'm still receiving advertising MMS from my carrier. In messages app there is setting to download MMS automatically, and it bypasses my GPRS internet restriction. Working as intended from the box.
But you have an issue with that? If you turn off mobile data, you lose MMS functionality? That's strange... I think it can be either carrier (we certainly don't have same carrier ) or ROM (I'm on cyanogenmod 11, Android 4.4). But there's also a tickbox on the page with data usage graph, called Restrict background data. It tells Android not to use data for background processes, may be that's exactly what you want.
And there's also an app called Droidwall. It's a firewall for Android, you can block access to the mobile data for every program except messaging app and still allow them to work with Wi-Fi. A wonderful app - no internet, no ads!

mine doesnt have any setting for GPRS at all. in fact im not even sure what it stands for! lol.
But thats right, no data = no MMS functioning.
I have gone in and disabled background data for everything that would let me, except the messaging app. and, the android OS itself uses a little bit?? which i cant disable...
Does the firewall actually work? I only ask because, i recently tried a startup manager, which when i went in after reboot, i found that apps i told only to start when called upon were still automatically running when i went into app manager.
If you have root, droidwall should work. It changes iptables, so the selected programs can't send or receive data. Just run it once, apply changes and the changes are persistent until you change them again.

Not receiving images via sms

I am able to text images to people and they get them with issues. If anybody sends me one it didn't come thru. There is a link that says download and I get a busy cursor and it never downloads. I have tried clearing the cache and clearing the data for the stock messages app. I have tried using Google messages and the same thing happens. Any ideas how to fix this?

Did you check your APN settings and make sure they are right?
Check the APN setting for your carrier, I've had same problem in the past and it was always a problem with the APN setting.

Are you using a custom DNS entry or some sort of DNS changer? This can and does on occasion break MMS capabilities. I have had this problem and by disabling the custom entry (or app) MMS returns to normal.
Did you do anything or make any changes to or with the phone at all prior to MMS not working?
You could also contact your provider and see if they have any seevice problems or issues. It is possible that there maybe a problem on the providers end.. either provisioning, account setting or something else.
They also may need to refresh the device on the network, sometimes when things like that happened to me this usually solved it.
Two other things you can try and/or check.
If your roaming or not. Depending on the provider and plan you might not be able to send mms while roaming. Either they do not offer data use while roaming, or else a data limit is in use (and you hit that limit).
Try resetting the network settings. On your phone it would be under settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will rest all the network settings back to default. Only draw back to this is any saved bluetooth devices and WIFI access points will be lost, so you will have to enter them in again.
I had an issue with mms once too and no matter what i did it wouldnt correct itself. Even factory reset. I changed the sim card to a new one and it worked. Dont know why but it worked. If you have an extra one try that.
I had the same exact issue! It started around Oct. 11th. I didn't even know that I was missing images from friends...they thought I was ignoring their texts. This problem was driving me nuts. I had been searching everywhere for answers and can't believe you described the same exact problem.
I'm on an Unlocked N10+ & I flashed the ATT firmware months ago and thought this might have something to do with it. I never owned an Unlocked phone before. Turns out that it was my own user error -->
I hadn't changed any of the APN settings. I was using Pulse SMS, tried Google Android Messages then the stock SMS app. No luck. I reset the network settings around 4 times. I thought this was the fix because it seemed to work for awhile but only with the stock messaging app. New images came in at first & I could only retrieve those older missing photos for the current day. The missing images were all listed as Unknown Caller. Later on in the day, I wasn't receiving images again...in any SMS app.
I was going to restore/reset my phone today but before that I started backing items up and checked my backed up SMS messages and the 2 recent ones said Oct. 31st!!!. WTH!?!
I then went into my Date/Time settings, I toggled the switch on and off again for the Automatic Date and Time. Re-selected my Time Zone and made sure that the Date and Time were accurate. They weren't...
I'm sure that this is where I screwed everything up because I had set my date (a couple of times in the past few weeks) ahead 5 days to see if I'd get the latest software/firmware update. I forgot to switch something back to my usual (and accurate) date & time setting which includes setting my time zone.
So far, this process seemed to work. I'm once again getting SMS/MMS images and videos within Pulse SMS.
