Hi XDA users,
I have a Sprint GS3 with 4.0.4 on it, but it pales in comparison to my previous GS2 on 2.3.* ...
(calendar [Mark/Space MIssingSync] swipes from week to week are MUCH slower, 4G data NEVER connects, data seems slower in general, etc., etc.)
All in all, i'm just extremely disappointed with this phone; and although the last time I was digging into my phone's ROM seemed like it was in the Palm Pre days, I believe I'm ready to take the plunge.
The GS2 still screams on 2.3.* and I can only imagine/hope that this GS3 would see great benefit from a down-grade...
Might anyone offer any pro/con advice on this effort? Am I crazy?
I found a thread for MAC (10.6.8) users, and am getting ready to give it a go... (right after I do some massive data back-ups, etc.)
thanks, in advance, for any input.

To answer your question:
It would be quite interesting to see older versions of Android run on this phone.
However, you'll need kernel building experience to make one capable of booting Gingerbread as well AOSP experience. Not sure how easy it would be to backport older software to new phone in the case of Stock TouchWiz.

please uninstall xda-developers.com from your IE browser.
I second that. The signal-to-noise ratio on the custom ROM forums has gotten way out of hand over the past 4 years or so.

well hey, that's why i thought i'd ask the smart people - wasn't really needing the smart-ass answers but i guess that's what i get for thinking outside of the [fish in a monitor] box...
regardless, i still think 4.0.4 sucks, comparatively. not sure what you guys are doing that makes it so superior... i just try to make phone calls; keep a calendar current; post pictures and use the internet... seems painfully slow... even typing on it quickly seems to bog it down.
anyway - guess i'll try the ol' factory reset, with a fresh 4.0.4, and see if it snaps out of it, a bit.
happy programming guys.
:/
2.3.x on a GS3 .... I'm sure you could. Would take a bunch of effort and extensive knowledge .... all for the equivalent of retrofitting a 1979 dodge charger's 4 barrel Carb onto a v12 Ferrari. Hmmm.

Yeah thing is stock 4.04 sucks , but not so much when you read first then go flash, configure, maybe even write some fanciful .conf or init.d files don't take xda people's. Word on stuff Linux is a great big multiverse composed unlike those of us in it for fun of many professionals whom write books. ...whole websites and of course when coding in Linux man pages, white papers, tutorials, help files .by far the underlying traits of Android are documented perhaps more then any thing on the internet. .......subject matter i mean

you must have a detective phone my gf gs2 is a joke compared to the speed on this phone . This isn't the fastest phone out there but it's not slow by any means.
And if you having speed problems with internet we all are. Idk if it's a gingerbread versus ics issue it could be your phone is only running one core because you flashed something. Try running some benchmark test to see how bad your phone is performing. Hope that reset help you.

If your SG3 isn't running way smoother than your old SG2 on Gingerbread, you've done something bad to your phone. ICS on my SG3 is a quantum leap smoother than Gingerbread every was, and JB will be even better. Perhaps you should look at what tweaks you've done to your phone.

Jim,
I am not going chime on some of the trolls who are above all but I will have to agree that your statement was a bit ludicrous. You have to take into perspective what you just said to a bunch of Galaxy S3 hackers. It's obvious that there is something wrong or we would've saw an iPhone ad bragging about the S3 'downgrade' and that didn't happen.
So, the first thing I would suggest is a factory reset. Assuming you are/were not rooted, let it run for a day and see what happens. Its possible an app could be causing your problems. There are many things you can do to slow things down but its impossible for me,us, xda to guess. Perhaps change up some applications that you are using...?
If this persist, I would suggest taking it back to Sprint and see if they can swap/fix it.
Your next option would be to root and try a different rom. However, if it is a hardware issue, I would want to replace it before I start rooting/making it my own.
As some of the people here mentioned, there might be some very useful information to achieve better 'speed'. I personally use JellyBomb specifically because of the dev and support amongst its users willing to help. You may benefit from others, each their own...
I sympathize as I myself was a webOS fan and can definitely tell you, this is not a walk in the park like webOS Internalz made it but definitely achievable considering almost every process (root, roms, themes, hacks, flashing) has a pretty thorough explanation if not a video.
Hope it works out.

I have had just about every Android phone Verizon offers. And obviously, my latest is the inc2 which I love BTW. But I have noticed something- the amount of activity and or support for this device amazes me. Is it JUST because we don't have perm root yet? It seems like even peoples basic questions go unanswered because not enough people are around.
In no way am I trying to point any fingers or rush the amazing devs. I am just curious as to why there seems to be very little activity here. Could it be that people are already happy with their inc2 the way they are, so there isn't much rush to change it? I don't think so.. theres always bigger and better things to try and look forward to.
I came from a fascinate previous to this phone and had more problems with it than I could even begin to list. But the dev support was there. Hopefully its just the root factor causing the lack of support.. or maybe I am missing something. Please try to refrain from the flaming.

Neither is the Eris or the Hero but the amount of support they recieve is astonishing!! Even still to this day the threads and contributors continue to grow at a steady pace.
Going forward with what the op stated and as u gunther mentioned, its because we still dont have root. In time we will achieve root and shortly there after the threads and postings will grow as well.

I've herd others say this and I don't get it. It's a very high end phone! Second generation snapdragon with gpu and a front facing camera? I'de say its high end. Not a tb but not many phones have dual core or Tegra 2 yet. Plus 4g is too much. It sucks battery and its not covered enough yet. 3g is just fine for me. Its the best phone Verizon has at the moment. The battery is great, its fast, amazing build quality and the video chat is a nice plus. I call it the thunderbolt's little brother.

Give it more than a little over a month.. this is why I keep my inc1 to play with. it'll come..
I believe the issue is that HTC has given us an ounce of hope by telling us that they will no longer lock their bootloaders. By doing this, most people are hesitant to try and root their phone since they know that HTC might do it for them. (Or provide an automated solution, of course.)

Sure, it's not a tbolt. Differences:
tbolt has 4.3" screen, I2 has 4" screen
tbolt has LTE, I2 does not
tbolt has a kickstand built in, I2 does not
...
...
Do you find these differences revolutionary? Because that's pretty much the only real differences. They both have the same SOC (2nd gen snapdragon), same 768mb RAM, same cameras, etc. The core hardware is pretty much the same. Unfortunately the storage controllers are different enough to make the rooting process for the tbolt not work for the I2, but it's my understanding they are similar enough that a similar hack is being worked on.
(this isn't targeted at gigamchz, just expanding on what was said)
I agree completely with nearly everything stated. What would you guys think about starting up an IRC room for us "non-devs" ? Ive got one setup, but if nobody is interested in making use of it, I don't see a reason to move forward with it.
I was only thing Irc because its a lot easier to get an answer to your question quickly. And also there would be a strict rule of no flaming. So hopefully people would feel more comfortable asking questions.

I think the phone looks great, but since it has the different processor and the consensus seems to say it is bad, would it be better to get the htc amaze? I really like this one as its lighter and bigger screen. lack of camera button bothers me a bit but I guess I can live with that. but if its crappy dual core and not going to be much better than my single core epic 4g, that wouldn't be so great.
Processing horsepower is much higher than any single core phone. You can't even reliably run Firefox on a Hummingbird SoC, my Vibrant has issues with it on CM7 and when it's overclocked. Not so with any dual core Android phone.

Fyi the Amaze and this both have the same exact processor and gpu. The processor on this phone isn't as great as the other Galaxy SII, but you'll never know the difference once this phone gets its software more optimized for the different processor we have. this is a big issue with the epic 4g since its so different from the other galaxy phones. I don't want to run into the issue again where i end up with the odd duck phone that doesn't get upgraded.

I think this phone would be a shoe in for Cyanogen mod especially since Cyanogen was hired by Samsung. As far as getting ICS officially I would think this phone should be one of the first Gingerbread running phone to receive the update. Would we get ICS unofficially? I definitely think so!!!

Lawl, and who's going to do the optimizing? Samsung?
If anything, you'd need to wait for Samsung to write the proper drivers or properly polish the TW ui to include hardware acceleration based on the A8-architecture. Something which I am going to assume is not going to happen.
To the OP, buy the phone based on what it can do now and based on how you like it after having played with it in the store.
I strongly advise you buying into this phone or signing a 2-year contract based on the hopes of other users on this forum.
Remember that. Just because people think this is XDA doesn't mean that every single problem on the phone will somehow get miraculously fixed or improved upon by developers.
I've seen too many buying a phone based on what it COULD/SHOULD be and not what it was.
Hardware acceleration would be done by the GPU no?

Yes it would be done as you seen in the game dead space only one worth mentioning. It wont lag when we have google new os on it because of hardware acceleration. It will be very little difference between our version and galaxy s2 variants.

Who ever is on xda most of the time relies on developers. Because it is to hard for them to learn it themselves. For optimization wait till google new os comes out so that way every phone with a dual core will basically be the same. Touchwiz may never be hardware accelerated till google releases source till ice cream. Its not a big deal you can run bunch of other variations of android. That will be hardware accelerated which are far superior to stock rom. By the time samsung gets touch wiz working fine on this phone.

I still love the phone despite knowing these technical drawbacks. I just know the limitations.I've played with them.
I first had the hd2 when it first came out...horrible,5 replacements in a month, then Tmobile gave me the vibrant the first day it came out for no charge..
A year later I broke it... I loved that phone....then the mt4, hated it,2 Weeks later the g2....hated it....
Then I thought I was going too be happy when I got the g2x....I was wrong!
Even after rooting and custom roms, it still sucked, finally I have the gs2...
So far I haven't rooted it yet....
I'm in love with this phone, yesterday I was searching around for custom roms, kernals and so forth....but I see nothing going forward for development except for a bunch of threads complaining about everything....
Developers, since i've been on here 2 years ago, i've been very happy with everyones work, thank you guys for doing great work
now that I have this phone,i really don't know what to do....should I root with no custom ROM or should I get a ROM?
I'm a full time father of 3,a full time tattoo artist, and with the lil bit of time I have,i can barely search and read the thousands of threads on each post...
Questions
What's worth using?
What's running smooth?
Which has the least problems?
Which apps should I get?
And are there any themes that would interest a tattoo artist?
Who would make one?i can help with info also in making one
If anyone can help me, thank you in advance, besides the drama I've seen on here after my few moth hiatus, I love this forum and the great community we have here
If only people can be this helpful in person, this world would be better
Again thank you for anyone who would be willing to help

Hey wat up TatuG, I'm a father of two, husband of one, and 55hr. a week Sales Rep. so I know about lack of time. I also came from the HD2 a few months ago, but my exp. was stellar, arguably the best phone ever. Now if you want a ROM Master&Slave's Blu Ray is hot, but right now I"m using Dan_Brutal's joint, nice theme and smooth, battery good also, just went 1 day without charging and my 4-year old playing the new Angry Birds for like 3hours straight. IMO.
In my opinion, you do not need to root except if you want to get rid of all the bloat and if you want to use free wifi tethering.
Other than that, stock does everything you would need compared to most of the custom roms.

Like someone before mentioned, M&S's Blu|Ray ROM is wicked smooth. If battery life is your priority, go for Darkside Digital Warfare (it's nice and stock, but plenty of themes for it in the theme section).

If you dont have the time to search, then wait till you do so your able to do your research. Not trying to be mean but your asking very subjective question. Obviously the whole forum is not running the same rom so people are gonna tell you the one they like is the best. So ill save you the time all the roms are great! There, now everybody doesnt have to tell you their favorite rom is the best one you should run. Dont know if your trollin but if your not go read over a couple rom threads doesnt take two long 5-10 min to read features n decide if that is too much then stay stock the phone works great stock anyways.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
I came from the Nexus S, so I felt the need to root mine the day after I got it. I don't think I had more than 4 hours of actual use on the stock rom.
Knowing that you don't have a lot of time (I'm in the same boat - father of 3, two of which are year old twins, with another on the way later this year) I would still suggest that you try to do as much research as you can. Read a couple of the rooting howto's, they are really well done and helped me out. Odin isn't that difficult to use, I was pleasantly surprised.
As far as rom options. I'm currently running the newly released BeastMod and it seems to be pretty solid. I ran Juggernaut 5 previously and it was pretty good as well. I would suggest either of those. I've not tried Eugene or M&S's stuff yet but I imagine I will in time.
Tom I'm using M&S I love it... fast battery is awesome and nicely themed...
About apps... There are so many apps... check out androidpolice.com they have reviews and top new apps Every two weeks... I think they have a tab at the top...

Blu ray or paradox. You have to root to freeze the bloat with titanium. I'd also recommend ics or apex launcher. Whitepages caller id and faster fix.

ICS launcher, is there one that doesnt FC?
I would recommend to root to remove CarrierIQ stuff and some preinstalled apps I never use like social apps. The battery life got better after that as well.
As a Flashaholic, I have flashed every rom on this forum (used each one for at least three to four days) my top 3 you cant go wrong with are: Tuesday/Paradox (both are great, on battery life and performance and eye candy) Malice, New but excellent performance again, and lastly but NOT least Digital Warfare/Revenge of Macnut. You cannot go wrong with any of these.
On a side note Darkside Kernel and Streamline Kernel in any combination with these ROM's (with the exception of digital warfare, which needs the darkside kernel) only enhance the performance and life of your ROM. I use Faux clock and I UV my system -50mv and only run the processor at 987 - 1.1 MHz and do not even notice.
Hope this helps.
I mean, common, with all the people asking if they should get an iphone or this, or what's better, this or the nexus, or all that other crap, am I the only one who realizes the absolute potential of this phone and how it pwns (excuse the crude terminology xD) basicly every other device out there including the crackberries and isucks, like just today I got about two hours total talk time, bout 5 hours online, wifi on for about 4 hours, bout 5 hours music through bluetooth and bout two through 3.5mm (damn thing lasted longer then my s10-HD), Data/gps and bluetooth on all day and going on 15hours uptime with 22% left on battery.
It performs extremely quick, compatible with basicly everything droid and ahead of the current market including the new nexus in specs, what's to question? The fact that carriers are being slow to release an update?
We already know that itl be comming fully touchcrapped out, and most people on this forums definitely aren't experienced enough to lay their hands on a system file let alone build a rom and will have to wait till someone releases a AOSP style build, with that being said, we don't need the carriers, only the drivers, then we can port what we need, so, why all the complaining, I say simply, if if you question the purchase, go for the alternitave, you probably couldn't handle the device properly anyways.
Opinions? And keep it clean, believe it or not, I'm actually going for a "healthy" discussion xD
I choose this one.

This phones awesome in every sense (obviously personal opinion)
I don't know how anyone could question it you can do so much with it its incredibly user friendly and poweful, easy as hell to flash, (although that counter sucks...),
Good lineup of cases, amazing screen and perfect resolution, I even like some* (very little) of TW,
I still say if you have to ask yourself, take the iphone xD
@anomy13
Just a little speal or rant about, well, wverything in my first post..

I LOVE this phone, it's a monster!
I can close to literally do anything and EVERYTHING with it.
A side note is that this is Android, and if you're not too bright then you're just wasting your phones potential and would be better off with an iPhone.
Idk why so many ppl worry about these lines and blobs, you obviously have to look for them in order for them to get annoying... Either that or I don't have them as bad and atrocious as others say they are.

Ye lol I like the processor and gig of ram part with my 16gb sdcard xD
Even compressing large zips are a breeze on it, and even with apps like android hexeditors and droidedit (notepad++ for droid with awesome features basicly) you don't even need a pc really xD you can basicly do what you need right from it,
haven't turned on my pc in about 3 days, on fibre optics and 802.11n router, I burnt through 400gb on my bandwidth last month xD)
I love this phone no doubt despite the lines problem i notice sometimes. But you actually get used to it.

Least you got a white obe xD telus didn't have any when I exchangex my first one, which they didn't have any then... and probably don't now...
Love the phone, I get bored pretty easily but have had this phone for a while now. Maybe it's the wait to see what ROMs come out of it (knowing Eugene is working on cm7 is great). Maybe it's just that there really isn't anything better at the moment for me.
Also as far as I know, Telus never got the white SII X

I love this phone, even with touchcrap and lack of ICS/CM (for now) its great. I'm excited to see CM 7 better supported soon and eventually CM9, that will be a great day for me lol.
As for the lines and blobs...after flashing newer kernels with updated skyrocket drivers it is reduced quite a bit.

Ye I love the lil things in crapwizz like turning of auto brightness and holding the status bar to adjust, and other **** like that, the GUI is to big in my opinion, icons are huge, fun to theme though, got CS5 so pngs are really fun
CM9 will definitely please a lot of people that's for sure, I just want drivers its pretty bad when I can build ICS for my old ass 3g lg (fun times.. good old days..) and I can dev all I want but its useless without proper sources xD
Those with like first edition s2x are probably having the blobs worse, samsung being cheap again, (look at the nexus..)
Find an excuse to RMA, that aughta do it
@christ1119
Ye it sucks... they look ballin woulda looked weird in a ballistics case though I guess..
I, too, love this phone. There's not a phone on the market I would rather being using.
It's got the best hardware of any current phone (except the Skyrocket, and that's the same phone for all intents and purposes since I'm not on AT&T).
Only thing I miss from it is AOSP ROMs, but that's just software, and those will come in time.
Nice to see some positiveness on this forum.
I was just about to order a galaxy nexus and this thread is holding me off for a bit.lol
I effin love this phone as stated in this thread it does everything i need it to and more. The fact that it is a qualcomm does not bother me it is more then capable of tearing anything u throw at it up. And as far as the lines go i dont see them even on low setting nor do i care to look for them. I think this phone hulk smashs every phone out there and can only imagine how much fasrer it will be when we do get ics and use the processor to its full potential coupled with true hw accelaration. I cant wait
Couple screenies....i think this is my new setup for awhile
Heres lockscreen and home screen

I agree with everything in the OP, to be honest, I had issues with GB and bugs on my other devices like my G2x (major issues on that, didn't wanna root it cause the dual core was pretty awesome but still did because of the ****ty stock rom). But ever since I switched to my SGS2, although being different from the original, no update to ICS in sight anytime soon, I'm least bothered by it, this is probably the most complete and bugless stock rom I've had on any device, I don't mind touch wiz one bit, know others don't like it but it's cool by me, there is a few things I wish I could change on it but ey it works, it's smooth and all the neat little features are actually pretty sweet. I actually use the default apps for just about everything, the response and performance is awesome compared to my previous phones (G2x response was pretty nice too btw just crappy bugs), only thing I had an issue with is my gps signal being lost at times or taking a while to lock on, but I kinda figured out why since it only happens in certain areas where I live, other than that, I'm pleased and loving my phone, not in much of a hurry for ICS since I can do everything I need to on the current system software and data speeds are awesome and the camera takes beautiful pics, what more could I ask for?
(Wish we had a little more support on accessories though, like cases and stuff like iPhones do, I have about 10 cases to choose from, most being plain, they have a bloody wall full of 'em in all designs and patterns you could think of, unfair much? Lol)
I am just curious, I still have a good 9-10 days to return it and might as well if there is not going to be much dev support because even with this awesome hardware I know LG just plain sucks at software...
We should make a list, if you have one say so just so we can get a count of how many people have them.

I have it...I am not a dev and don't really care to root my phone...just want the Jelly Bean upgrade I'll be happy with this. Dropped my GSIII the other day...the deductible on the insurance was $199....I had an upgrade was going to get a new GSIII but started reading about this phone so I decided to give a shot...LOVE IT...don't regret getting this over another GSIII...as a matter of fact I like it better. Very happy with it.
I have it. My return deadline is this Friday. Might return it for the Nexus 4. Love the device. At&t wont unlock. Still undecided for now.

I'm not counting on att I'm hoping devs figure it out. But if we have to rely on LG jelly bean may never happen and this bloat is ridiculous, I'm pretty sure they never fixed the G2x only the custom roms did.

The bloat you can fix by rooting and using Titanium Backup. I'm fine with the phone, I just need to know that the bootloader will get unlocked, and there will be dev support. The entire xda section for this phone is dead. Not a good sign.
Exactly my worry, this place is a ghost town. And there is something very wrong with our stock OS. The battery usage is ridiculous and this chip should bench higher too.

The battery has been up and down for me. Twice I've had something get stuck that killed the battery, once it was the phone, and I hadn't made any calls that day. It was fine after a reboot. The android OS seems to keep it awake a bit much, and the phone is NEVER in deep sleep as much as other devices. Try eco mode?
Also, this thing is benching fine? Same as the Korean version? I posted a bunch of bench screens in the "show homescreen" thread. The N4 was benching horribly last time I was looking at reviews...
Well I guess my only comparison were the 10k quadrants the qualcomm dev system was putting up with this chip. But yeah I mean it is blazing fast, fastest phone I've ever seen... That's why I'm having such a hard time deciding.

This thing with its stock AT&T ICS rom, stock kernel, stock clocks, is benching about the same as my SGS3 was with a Jelly Bean ROM, kernel, and OCed to 1.7ghz. In some cases, its beating it. My friend has the Sprint SGS3 (krait dual core) and I'm obliterating him in benches. Browsermark is about the only thing he's even with.
As a phone, for normal people, is great. I could easily recommend this to friends. Battery life is the only thing we can debate on. For us? We need XDA dev support. I know for myself, I *have* to get back to Jelly Bean, and some form of AOSP rom. (I'm partial to AOKP)
So I have a week to see what's going to happen. Hopefully with the N4 coming out today, we'll see something. If its still a ghost town with no word by next week, I'm going to have to decided to either return it, and save my upgrade or sell it on XDA.

That dev board shows what the SoC is capable of, but no way will performance be the same on this. This already has thermal throttling issues, so pushing it too much would be crazy.

Exactly what I'm thinking, not because of dev support, but because there are many little issues I can't deal with with this phone. Either the Nexus 4 or the One X+.
Good luck getting a Nexus anytime soon, I tried AT launch this morning. Some members got some, others like myself spent 20 minutes trying over and over, getting lag and errors until the phone was removed from our carts, and is now sold out.
I tried. I have to return the LGOG by Monday... hopefully something happens by then.
This phone is brand new...you can't expect it to be PERFECT..its pretty close though lol. And all I see is people pointing out the bad. Battery life...you have 4 cores! Your phone isn't gonna get the battery life your used to..and benchmarks? Idk what you guys are pulling but I get 7500+. That's plenty fast for me. And LG is hurting. The OG is gonna make or break them. I think you need to have faith in this manufacturer. Its the first of its kind in the US. Its too big of a deal to not update. Mght be a couple months but for those of you who switch because of locked bootloader will regret with what I believe will come in the future. Jellybean will do wonders for the UI..which is not bad at all...I suggest you give this beast a chance..I don't think you will regret it.

Sure sure Mr LG employee! I do agree this phone will be the survival or death of their mobile. But my doubts come from owning prior LG devices, their problems were all software and never fixed by LG. It didn't matter though because we had a decent dev community, looked bootloaders though on an LG phone worry the hell out of me. This phone is a beast I love the build quality but I am still sceptical, I'm going to ride this ship though hopefully we steer clear of icebergs!

I can understand your concerns. I had the same thoughts..I almost considered switching to the one x+, but I would regret it if (and I'm sure it will) upgrade to 4.1 or possibly jb and 4.2. I think this is their changing point.

I was rooting for the nexus 4 but when it came out with no lte and no expandable memory I opted for the next best thing at the time which was LG optimus g hoping developement would be therefore it. And thankfully it seems to be the case so :good:!
I have had this device a little over a week and i love it i get way better battery life than i did oit of my atrix 2 and so far nothing i due can produce lag the phone responds as fast as i can touch the screen i love my device i think build quality is second to none and my city launched lte recently so with 40 mb plus download speeds i think this device is supurb i have rooted and installed custom roms on every device i have owned but so far with the optimus g i see no need to my only complaint is the camera i feel it could be better but hey its still a phone !

I am loving this phone. Its incredibly fast and responsive I have only managed to lag it with Testla LED (oddly Flashlight works fine).
Not a huge fan of LG's UI choice (I would have rather had a dark theme, but its not that big of a deal.) Hopefully we get an official Cyanogen port down the road.

I just picked up my OG yesterday. This is my first Android phone in awhile. I've previously had a G1 and Sprint HTC Hero. I'm coming from an iPhone 5 I smashed in frustration after dealing with Apple's dumb customer service reps for a week regarding a SIM not valid error after updating to iOS 6.0.1.
