Phone feeling hot - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hey guys, I had my phone for no more than an hour. Rooted and flashed cm10. Phone seems to get warm like 100 degrees f. And that's not using data or WiFi.
I had stock on for a little and noticed the same thing, is my phone jacked or is this normal? I have warranty so if none of you guys experience this I'll take it in. I just don't think it's too healthy for the device...

My phone gets pretty hot sometimes too, but only during heavy usage and multitasking. If you're finding that it's heating up when you're just browsing the web or installing apps, try using another kernel. I recommend Lean Kernel with CM10

Yeah but I was wondering if it gets hot on stock for people. Cause it did for me.

Yup it can definitely do thst. I just consider it pretty normal at this point and dont pay it much mind anymore when it does warm up.

Very normal for me. Light use it can get warm. The phone bring made out the plastic (or whatever it is) and super thin doesn't help either.

Im tempted to take alluminum foil and place the shiny side facing away from the device under neath the battery cover to attempt to wick away the heat -.-

Yea its normal. Let's not forget the back cover is really thin compared to other phones. To me it makes it seem a lot hotter than it really is.

My s2 barely gets hot :/ and thats with no back cover on just a case. but the battery temps are much lower as well on the S2. usually around upper 70s to lower 80s degrees farenheit under normal load.

yeah
my phone does the same it sometimes does the same it gets hot on the bottom back part

Personally I believe it can be rom/kernel related too. Usually it doesn't get really warm for me except under load. But with the latest leak, if im using it at all, it just stays warm. When I was first using it this morn it actually got pretty hot and when charging got even hotter. I let it cool and hasn't been that hot since.

Mine use to get a lil warm too under heavy usage, until i flashed Faux kernel(<<THIS KERNEL SUPPORT UNDERVOLTING) on sonic Gs3 rom & then i used system tuner to undervolt cpu further(yes undervolt not underclock) although i am running at default clock speed with conservative & cfq settings.Since then my phone runs pretty cool even on heavy usage.I heard the default voltage are sometimes higher than what is needed which may increase phone temperature faster,My battery life is even better now than it already was on Gs3 rom, KEEP IN MIND YOU MUST RUN A CPU STRESSED TEST IN THE SET CPU APP WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR PHONE VOLTAGE SETTING TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NO ERROR,RANDOM REBOOTS,BOOT LOOP,LAG OR JUST A LIL SLUGGISHNESS BECAUSE YOU UNDERVOLT TOO LOW & KEEP IN MIND NOT ALL CHIPS ARE CREATED EQUAL,So my settings may only be stable of my phone, you may have to take that risk & experiment around.
I attached screenshots of my personal undervolt in system tuner & also a screenshot of default voltage of I9300 variant but i figure.
check the option to use settings on boot in System tuner or you will have to keep setting it on each reboot

Well in my life of hacking phones, under/overvolting seriously reduces life of the CPU.. i dont quite feel comfortable undervolting my brand new galaxy s3. lol. Unless someone can provide scientific evidence to undervolting not causeing long term harm to my CPU.

No reason to undervolt or overclock this hardware. Overclocking became irrelevant when dual cores came out. Undervolting was never relevant. People do it because they like to play around with their hardware, which I understand, though I've always been more interested in software myself.

What are you doing when the phone gets warm?

Mine seems to get hot as the battery gets low (not even on the charger).

But after a two hour phone call while being plugged in I'm only at 93 degrees. So that's not too shabby

[Q] Heat problems?

Alright guys so today is the first time I've had this problem. I'm running warm z twopointtwo 4/7 nightly with chads 12/23. For some odd reason today my phone has been overheating. Now I wasn't able to get an exact temperature read but my guess is somewhere around "way too effing hot" degrees Fahrenheit. I say this because my phone actually got so warm today I almost couldn't touch the screen. I was seriously expecting thermonuclear meltdown! I pulled my battery and let it cool off and all was fine but still it worries me. I wasn't even doing any intense processing. I was only using the xda app and reading some threads. Throughout the day it hasn't got quite that hot but its been running noticeably warmer than usual. My battery also seems to be dieing slightly faster than usual. Now my phone is a certified refurbished less than a month old so I can't imagine this being a matter of my battery starting to die.....so anyone have any input on what could be causing this? Could it be Rom if kernel related?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
I've tried that rom/kernel combo and it worked for me. Are you using a non OEM battery?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Nope I have the original battery still in it and everything....I mean it works beautifully outside of a few occasional hiccups here and there but nothing that isn't to be expected.....but the heat problem never happened to me before.....I mean trust me I used to have a crazy overclocked Eris that loved to get hot but never this hot. And I haven't even overclocked my dinc yet....its just kinda odd it was a one time thing but it was almost too hot to touch. It spooked me I legitimately feel like I was very close to processor meltdown.....

Well you are using a "warm" ROM
Just messing with you. I'm running Warm-Z too but Chad's 12/23 kernel won't boot for me so I usually use Lou's #4 or #8, and with them I don't feel heat issues unless I'm charging. I'd say switch kernels. As long as it's a Sense kernel.
Well like I've never flashed kernels before....I'm sure I could figure it out....but none the less this isn't a frequent problem.....that's the only time its happened. I was actually in an area that was in and out of service though.....does bouncing around in service while trying to use 3g require a lot of processing? I can't imagine it would....mebbe the heat came from my cell receiver 0.o
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Yeah looking for a signal is apparently pretty battery draining. Still not really sure about the heat issue though.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Well I mean if its battery draining that would mean more current through the phone for the battery to drain more rapidly. More current translates into heat in any application. But still the level of heat that was coming out of it was crazy. And I could actually watch my battery decrease fast as hell

Well, I'll give you the link to Lou's #4, and that's a pretty basic kernel. Really it's like flashing a ROM. You go inside your recovery, and ONLY wipe CACHE and Dalvik-Cache. Then flash the Kernel's zip. Then reboot!
NANDROID BACKUP! Don't forget!

What are the real advantages of me flashing this kernel over my current one? Like I don't think it'll help the problems with heat. I'm still interested in that on a side note though. Does it have havs? Cause I hate the fact that I lose ten percent in five minutes after unplug

Some kernels are just better for your phone, and some aren't. I took the time to find a kernel with HAVS that I've used in the past.
http://www.ziggy471.com/downloads/Ziggy471Kernel-INC-update_signed.zip
This should work fine. Ziggy's a pro.
Will that be compatible with warm z? Like I said I'm not familiar with which roms work with which kernels? And while were at it what the eff is bfs? I think I know what the acronym stands for though I'm not sure.....but I have no idea what bfs and cfs are.

So back to topic with this thread....anyone think that my judgement is right with rating the heat was due to he battery drain occurring due to signal jumping?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
I think it could be the cause of the battery drain but it doesn't seem like it should cause overheating although I could be wrong. Have you had the issue since then or was it just when you were having trouble getting a signal? BFS-Brain **** Scheduler. Linux stuff.

Possibly. Let me explain.
I'm currently running rooted 2.2 and if mine searched for signal, battery gets warm.....really warm. I flashed the radio to 11.19 (Evo) and so far, knocking on wood, my signal search issue has gone away and GPS seems to lock on instantly. I'm also using the 1800 battery from htcexpress dot com.
The only other time my phone got so hot that the amber light started flashing was in the car, charging, running GPS and streaming music at the same time. Battery temp according to my a battery app was 128 degrees F.
128 f isn't too bad....my Orange light didn't even blink that's the thing and i didn't have an app to tell me the exact temp. However I know that if through the entire case my phone is almost too hot to hold then its probably pretty close to processor melt....and that's another good point.....wtf didn't my light blink? It should have but didn't.....hmmm.....but none the less @k_nive if you agree about signal drop causing battery drain then wouldn't my above post make sense? Yanno, more battery drain = more current and more current = more generated heat due to small energy loss through the wires because of total conservation of energy without the phone following total conservation principles? Aka the phone isn't efficient enough to use all the energy supplied to it so it gives off any excess in the form of heat? And thanks about the bfs info!
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
And on a side note. I read up on bfs. I get it....kinda. I understand the point but what scheduler is used in chads 12/23? And what are the real advantages if bfs for us Android users over any other scheduler?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
It does make sense I suppose. Its just something I haven't run into before so its hard to say for sure one way or the other but the increased battery drain could definitely result in more heat especially if you were using GPS or streaming music at the time.
Perhaps your phone didn't hit the temperature that triggers the flashing led? The phone can feel pretty warm without actually being too hot. I would get a battery widget that lets you monitor temp that way you have a more accurate picture of what's going on. As far as Chad's 12/23 kernel, I think it uses cfs as opposed to bfs but I'm not sure, I'd have to check the thread. As I understand it bfs ramps up the processor more for specific apps/processes while cfs is a more balanced scheduler. I don't know much about the differences so feel free to jump in and clarify things!
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Grrr.....so I thought that the battery temp problem was gone but Damn it if it ain't acting up again.....this time even more odd....the phone was not nearly as hot to the touch and yet my led started blinking the too hot code at me.....so wtf? Like before I almost melt the effing board and I don't get a single blink. This time its slightly warm and I start blinking. My phones losing its mind. I just got juice defender and a battery monitor widget to try and figure out wtf is up.....any more input very welcome!

i use the power-saving feature a lot... i get paranoid when the battery gets below 30% and i know lithium ion batteries should never be fully discharged. the phone functions surprisingly smooth at even 1000 mhz and the decrease in speed barely even unnoticeable unless you're heavily multitasking. i also have SetCPU to underclock my peak speeds even lower for certain apps, or during various charging states, or different times of the day (evenings, weekends, work hours), and overclock for more resource-intensive apps (browser, skype, games, etc.).
try undervolting your cpu as well to have the best gain in battery life. ppl often forget the voltage part of CPU especially if you are going to overclock this puppy

S3 getting hot when playing games and..

Hey gang.
Does everyone's s3 get hot when playing games?
Just trying to figure out if it's normal. It feels hotter than other phones I've owned. And want to know if this is common or if I should return my S3
It's really warm when using data (browsing, YouTube etc.) around 95-105°
But gets hot when playing games. Around 120 -125°

Been monitoring temps with system tuner under different stress levels. Playing gta3 I pushed temps to 52°C.
Internet browsing has me around the low 40s. At idle the temp is around 32-35C

The phone gets really warm on stock. The cpu has a temp control feature that if it gets too hot it will slow down. The cpu is made to work up to really high temperatures so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you flash to a custom kernel, they are lowering voltages on some of the frequencies and I am noticing an incredible loss of heat. My phone does not get warm anymore, at least no where near stock.

This. Like faux said some of the chips run the same voltage across many frequencies (in my case 1150mv) I was able to lower them into the 850-1050s which is crazy low. Remember power draw goes up exponentially with voltage change.

Is it possible that the American version (dualcore 2gb ram) doesnt get as hot as the international one (quadcore exynos 1gb ram)?
Mine gets pretty hot as well when i play for long times, i guess the main reason why many people are talking about this is that the Chipsets are located directly at the bottom where you would hold your phone while gaming in portrait mode for example. So you can directly feel it and the heat of your hand further warms the phone My Tegra3 tablet gets pretty hot as well in one spot - where the cpu is, but its not a place you normally place your hands, so you wont even notice that it gets warm.
Same thing was with my previous phone the DesireHD. It never got hot on the places where i held it, so you think it wont heat up at all.
In general though: I have some experience with cpu clocking on PCs and overclocking and stuff. It depends a little on the chipset of course but in general temps like 50-70° C are no problem at all for CPUs.
Workaround on SGSIII: Enable power save mode CPU. It reduces the clock to 1ghz (at least on my rom - stock jelly bean polish release), it still runs most games and UI perfectly smooth in jelly bean but it gets considerably less hot.
if i install many apps at once (testing new roms) my phone gets hot

Juice Defender - Should I keep using it?

So over in a Development thread I mentioned that I use Juice Defender Ultimate still, I got some heat for it because it's old.
What's new that I should be using instead? Running CM10 11/30 Nightly that I v6 Supercharged (Die-Hard, so I don't think Tasker will work).
I don't need anything to sync or notify me when it's in my pocket, just calls/texts via radio. I also already use CPU Sleeper and it's locked in memory via v6 bulletproof.
My goal is to make the most out of my battery.

not sure exactly. i used to use green power battery. these data killing apps used to work miracles on gb and froyo. but nowadays i think the main battery killers are the hefty processors. i now focus on kernels and governors and whatnot to save battery. i think killing data will help if it stays off most frequently. when you have the settings to turn on data as soon as the screen turns on, the device is toggling data and constantly searching for signal, maybe even killing more battery than saving.. idk thats just my opinion. and on the other hand.. if your not really using your phone so much i think it would save more in the long run. i would just test it yourself and see what works
Only thing that will improve the battery is a new phone .
I've tried everything. The best result has been ditching AOSP and going back to TW. It might not be fancy schmancy, but it functions and has marginally better battery life (at least in my experience).
Good luck on your quest. I'll probably keep my eye on this thread to see if there are any new suggestions (but not very optimistic).

Sorry but no one can say for sure whats a rock solid combo. I suggest you try them all like I have to see what works best for you. After trying everything I came back to Ondemand and felt it gave me the best results but thats me.
Good app to try is Llama and its free and does all JD stuff and more
to add, regardless of what kernel i use sometimes the processor will climb to unnecessarily high frequencies when the screen is off. to tame it a little more use setcpu and enable profiles. my profile, when the screen is off, is min 384 max 540 and conservative/noop. then when the screen wakes, interactive/noop 384/1512. but im sure most of you already know this. cpu sleeper will do the trick too. beware of wake lag
Stock battery?
I've got the Anker 2200Mah running CM10 with HC kernel and have gotten 12 hr on time with 5hr screen time.

I'm using the same Anket battery. I followed everyone's advice, ditched JD and made a SetCPU profile.
I think it was Google Music draining my battery so bad. It's absolutely amazing now.

I no longer use Juice Defender and, for me and my set up, JD did not have noticeable impact.
Nor did more complex strategies using Llama.
The ROMs, governors, CPU settings, and tweaks seem to be where it's at.

I have found that to be the case with every such app I've tried. The best results I've always had have come from removing apps that I don't need or use. I can get thru a full 8 hr shift, so I'm happy.

3 to 4 hour screen time here and gsam currently has me at 1 day 5 hour battery life average. without juice defender. I got rid of it when I saw it was waking my phone 150 times a day.

[Q] How warm does your phone get ?

I live in cali and temperatures are getting pretty hot. While I went out today I was just texting and an app warned me about my batterys temperature it was at 115 Fahrenheit. I think its the otter box that isnt letting my phone breathe. Should I be concerned? What are your temperatures?

I also live in California and my phone gets so hot just from doing nothing it's crazy.. I think the case I have is trapping the heat in or something...
I am in AZ and it reached 108 ambient temps so my 115 degree battery is feasible.

I've become somewhat obsessed with the many battery issues. My phone runs just below the threshold ie. ~125F that you don't want to cross for batteries or processors. And that's with just light multitasking. I can't imagine playing games on the One.
It's an aluminum body! Why doesn't it leech heat?
I'm gonna look into a new phone for the summer.
I am also from California and my phone gets hot from time to time. Case is a big factor on the cooling side. Plastic, rubber, and silicone are good insulators and will keep the heat in. i would recommend removing the case when phone temps get to 115+F
I live in PA so I have never gotten a warning about the battery temperature reaching that limit, but I have been alarmed sometimes just at how hot the phone feels when I am using it heavily. It's hard to tell with a case on but without it, if I am running backups/restore in recovery or playing games, even in the cooler climate it has given me cause for concern.

Yep, that's why I'm under-clocking this thing, that processor gets super hot.

You shouldn't need to UC, it should automatically UC from thermald. You should just edit those settings to make it automatically UC earlier

I keep mine uc all the time and it rarely gets hot. I've never had to mess with the thermal settings. The CPU is so powerful it really doesn't need to be as fast as it is in my opinion. 1.55ghz seems to be right where it should be. No lagging at this speed and the difference in performance is negligible at best.
