I live in cali and temperatures are getting pretty hot. While I went out today I was just texting and an app warned me about my batterys temperature it was at 115 Fahrenheit. I think its the otter box that isnt letting my phone breathe. Should I be concerned? What are your temperatures?

I also live in California and my phone gets so hot just from doing nothing it's crazy.. I think the case I have is trapping the heat in or something...
I am in AZ and it reached 108 ambient temps so my 115 degree battery is feasible.

I've become somewhat obsessed with the many battery issues. My phone runs just below the threshold ie. ~125F that you don't want to cross for batteries or processors. And that's with just light multitasking. I can't imagine playing games on the One.
It's an aluminum body! Why doesn't it leech heat?
I'm gonna look into a new phone for the summer.
I am also from California and my phone gets hot from time to time. Case is a big factor on the cooling side. Plastic, rubber, and silicone are good insulators and will keep the heat in. i would recommend removing the case when phone temps get to 115+F
I live in PA so I have never gotten a warning about the battery temperature reaching that limit, but I have been alarmed sometimes just at how hot the phone feels when I am using it heavily. It's hard to tell with a case on but without it, if I am running backups/restore in recovery or playing games, even in the cooler climate it has given me cause for concern.

You shouldn't need to UC, it should automatically UC from thermald. You should just edit those settings to make it automatically UC earlier

I keep mine uc all the time and it rarely gets hot. I've never had to mess with the thermal settings. The CPU is so powerful it really doesn't need to be as fast as it is in my opinion. 1.55ghz seems to be right where it should be. No lagging at this speed and the difference in performance is negligible at best.

I was just curious to know if someone else's phone is over heating. Yesterday I was watching a boxing match on youtube with 4G on and it reached to a scary 121°. 4 hours later I was playing the nova demo with the screen at 45% brightness, played for like 20 minutes or so and it reached 112°. Just whanted to figure out if this is normal that personallyI think is not, and also if someone else it's experiencing the same issue. Thanks

Mine can get much hotter than that but it pretty much hovers around the 120 range when I'm browsing the web.
I also get this message when charging and watching a video. I need to exchange it. Just need to find a Best Buy store that has one in stock.
What do you use to check the temp?
mine gets real hot as well.. I think it has to do with charging while using though.
Woow thats amazing. Im guessing that those temperatures can be harmful to the phone right?
I use system info from the market to check my phone status very useful

My phone was just laying in shotgun of my car with the car charger plugged in and the display on, then all of a sudden I picked it up and it was hella hot! 120° read SetCPU and I got shook, ripped the battery out and threw the phone in front of an AC but then I got worried that the extremities could possibly warp the board, so now Im thinking Im going to return my phone! In no way can this be good for the phone, I don't see how it can not get affect it when reaching 120, 130, 140 degrees!!! Im worried that in a week, a month, a year from now something will go terribly wrong and I really don't want to risk it, so I'm real close to returning this phone and just waiting for the Nexus!
I am amazed that a phone getting hot after heavy use is such a surprise to everyone. See any fans? see any ventilation? Here you are using a dual core 1.5 GZ processor, what were you expecting, ice water?
Ahh... Set CPU. So you can't really find the temp until you're rooted?
Hmm

Who mentioned anything about heavy usage and overclocking? CPU is 1.2Ghz stock buddy and I wasn't doing anything on my phone at the time it overheated...I have a Droid Incredible 2, and I run its CPU OC to 2.035Ghz and its never once gone over 105 degrees, so before you go getting all amazed, get your facts straight!
I have noticed this too.
With the phone simply in my pocket, my leg would feel warm. I could grab the phone and the phone would feel quite hot. Not so hot that it would burn my ear, but warm enough that it would feel like there's some kind of problem. Usually, heat = battery getting drained. When I check to see if there's anything running, there's nothing...
Right now, have been listening to Spotify for over 2 hours, and it's cold as ambient temperature. Will try installing some monitoring program and report if I notice more heat issues. I know the Evo3D used to get "burns my ear" hot when using it as GPS while connected to the car charger. My guess was that if the screen is on, and there's power going to it, it'd always get hot. Maybe it wasn't supposed to and that was just my assumption. However, same thing happens to this one; watching netflix, or playing a game, or anything demanding, and if I'm plugged, it will get really hot, really fast. If not connected, it won't get as hot, but "normally" hot nonetheless.

That you know of, did they ever fix the issue on the Evo3D?
Let me put it another way. I don't see any process or feature that will cool down the phone when in moderate to heavy use. I expect it to get hot. I have always thought, how are they going to disperse the heat?

Mine got hot on day 1 from youtube and general setup but after a full nights charge it has been great for 2 full days, no heating up or anything weird.
But man did it get hot!
Edit: I turned off gps the night this happened. I have been using my phone alot and have not experienced this again.
You need a dose of Penicillin and Cortizone. The burning sensations should clear up. In the mean time, stay away from strange phones and turn off the vibration loop - LOL
Sorry, but I've done quite a bit with my phone (videos, NetFlix, etc...) and it doesn't get warm enough to burn.
An Intel CPU (i7, for example) can run at 200 degrees Fahreneheit. In fact, the roof is about 100 degrees Celsius. To protect the CPU, there are heatsinks, fans, water cooling, etc. Video cards can also go up to 70 degrees celsius before showing artifacts; some can do much better.
We're commenting a heat that is not nearly that much for a phone. IF the SOC gets to 100 degrees celsius, that's one thing; 100 degrees fahrenheit...that is the temperature in many places around here.
These SOC don't need such fans, heatsinks, etc, because they're not supposed to reach temps of 200 degrees. They should be self contained.
On my Evo3D, which I passed on to my father, I could smell like something was burning. It wasn't, but it smelled like if it were, around the battery. Yeah, it still gets hot when in use, and specially if connected.
I believe there's also comments that on all new phones, the first few charges, while the battery adapts, the phone may be hot. Of course it had been over 2 months on my Evo3D and it still gets hot.
The E4gT is doing better today, but I haven't thrown any video/games at it yet; nor has it been in my pocket.
I'd say give it a couple days. I know I've reported my own concern, and I'll be checking it to make sure the "hotness" is within reasonable limits.

Hey gang.
Does everyone's s3 get hot when playing games?
Just trying to figure out if it's normal. It feels hotter than other phones I've owned. And want to know if this is common or if I should return my S3
It's really warm when using data (browsing, YouTube etc.) around 95-105°
But gets hot when playing games. Around 120 -125°
Chime in. Would love some feedback on everyone's S3.

I believe this is normal as long as you monitor and don't over clock a lot. Eventually that can kill your hardware.

Been monitoring temps with system tuner under different stress levels. Playing gta3 I pushed temps to 52°C.
Internet browsing has me around the low 40s. At idle the temp is around 32-35C
My ambient temp in my home is about 73-74 F.

The phone gets really warm on stock. The cpu has a temp control feature that if it gets too hot it will slow down. The cpu is made to work up to really high temperatures so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you flash to a custom kernel, they are lowering voltages on some of the frequencies and I am noticing an incredible loss of heat. My phone does not get warm anymore, at least no where near stock.

This. Like faux said some of the chips run the same voltage across many frequencies (in my case 1150mv) I was able to lower them into the 850-1050s which is crazy low. Remember power draw goes up exponentially with voltage change.

Is it possible that the American version (dualcore 2gb ram) doesnt get as hot as the international one (quadcore exynos 1gb ram)?
Mine gets pretty hot as well when i play for long times, i guess the main reason why many people are talking about this is that the Chipsets are located directly at the bottom where you would hold your phone while gaming in portrait mode for example. So you can directly feel it and the heat of your hand further warms the phone My Tegra3 tablet gets pretty hot as well in one spot - where the cpu is, but its not a place you normally place your hands, so you wont even notice that it gets warm.
Same thing was with my previous phone the DesireHD. It never got hot on the places where i held it, so you think it wont heat up at all.
In general though: I have some experience with cpu clocking on PCs and overclocking and stuff. It depends a little on the chipset of course but in general temps like 50-70° C are no problem at all for CPUs.
Workaround on SGSIII: Enable power save mode CPU. It reduces the clock to 1ghz (at least on my rom - stock jelly bean polish release), it still runs most games and UI perfectly smooth in jelly bean but it gets considerably less hot.
if i install many apps at once (testing new roms) my phone gets hot
Hey guys, I had my phone for no more than an hour. Rooted and flashed cm10. Phone seems to get warm like 100 degrees f. And that's not using data or WiFi.
I had stock on for a little and noticed the same thing, is my phone jacked or is this normal? I have warranty so if none of you guys experience this I'll take it in. I just don't think it's too healthy for the device...

yeah
my phone does the same it sometimes does the same it gets hot on the bottom back part
Personally I believe it can be rom/kernel related too. Usually it doesn't get really warm for me except under load. But with the latest leak, if im using it at all, it just stays warm. When I was first using it this morn it actually got pretty hot and when charging got even hotter. I let it cool and hasn't been that hot since.

Mine use to get a lil warm too under heavy usage, until i flashed Faux kernel(<<THIS KERNEL SUPPORT UNDERVOLTING) on sonic Gs3 rom & then i used system tuner to undervolt cpu further(yes undervolt not underclock) although i am running at default clock speed with conservative & cfq settings.Since then my phone runs pretty cool even on heavy usage.I heard the default voltage are sometimes higher than what is needed which may increase phone temperature faster,My battery life is even better now than it already was on Gs3 rom, KEEP IN MIND YOU MUST RUN A CPU STRESSED TEST IN THE SET CPU APP WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR PHONE VOLTAGE SETTING TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NO ERROR,RANDOM REBOOTS,BOOT LOOP,LAG OR JUST A LIL SLUGGISHNESS BECAUSE YOU UNDERVOLT TOO LOW & KEEP IN MIND NOT ALL CHIPS ARE CREATED EQUAL,So my settings may only be stable of my phone, you may have to take that risk & experiment around.
I attached screenshots of my personal undervolt in system tuner & also a screenshot of default voltage of I9300 variant but i figure.
check the option to use settings on boot in System tuner or you will have to keep setting it on each reboot

Well in my life of hacking phones, under/overvolting seriously reduces life of the CPU.. i dont quite feel comfortable undervolting my brand new galaxy s3. lol. Unless someone can provide scientific evidence to undervolting not causeing long term harm to my CPU.

No reason to undervolt or overclock this hardware. Overclocking became irrelevant when dual cores came out. Undervolting was never relevant. People do it because they like to play around with their hardware, which I understand, though I've always been more interested in software myself.

Have you checked for rogue processes? Get GSAM Battery Monitor or Watchdog Lite and see if anything is consuming a lot of CPU cycles.
Also, try CPU Sleeper - it shuts one of the cores off when the phone goes to sleep which gives huge battery savings.
I wouldn't do all that doing something that it wasn't intended to be, shutting down a core. Android does a good job with all that, if it gets really really hot
Buy a new battery or better yet start from scratch see if you get it stock. My s3 never been really hot, and I know what hot is coming from the g2x and the first galaxy now those phones will burn you.

The G2x was nothing compared to the Sensation! OUCH!
And it only shuts a core off when its asleep. You can uninstall the app and it reverts so no harm there.
I have a second battery and it runs on the hot side side as well. My roommate has a white GS3 and I have a titanium GS3 and his battery lasts a hell of a lot longer than mine. It may just be defective. I couldn't get his past 90 degrees.
My battery is running 83/84 degrees, but then I recently changed to a 3200 which fits the original compartment.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, these phones are so random. Kinda like the thing with the dark dots dead pixel when screen is off some come in horrific shape from the box.

How much on screen do you get with that battery and do you have a link? Also, is it NFC enabled? I don't need NFC just curious.
Mine was at about 95-98F when I was tethering and stayed pretty constant. The phone was a bit warm, but not worryingly so (it's gotten hotter).
Honestly, I don't think it's a big deal these temperatures seem within normal parameters.

I guess for me the fact the screen gets so hot is what bothers me... and the heat on the back, it goes through my Incipio case (both the rubber and the plastic) and its hot at the bottom of the phone... the temp readings are battery only since it seems the processor doesn't have a temperature monitor - that or none of the kernels support it.
galaxy s3 high temp
10 mins of subway surfers and my s3 gets to 107-110 . Is this normal. I have hard reset the device and running on jelly beans 4.1.2 with minimum applications loaded. Normal temprature of the device when idle is 89 to 95. Only the bottom half of the screen gets hot. Took it to the service center they did nothing but reformat it.
I find my OG tends to get noticeably hot during normal use. if I'm doing anything graphics intensive it get super hot. I have never checked the actual temps but its hotter than any phone I've ever owned (also the most powerful :good: ) the heat does not seem to affect the performance of the device it is just a little concerning to me, I know how computers and high heat don't mix well.
How's your signal? Is it low? Do you roam a lot? These can cause your phone to get really warm sometimes hot if your trying to do something that requires data or any type of signal. Its just how CDMA phones are

We have a quad core processor with no type of cooling system whatsoever. It getting hot is normal.

I play some pretty graphic intensive games on my phone and my phone has never got hot from it. Its gotten kinda warm a few times from using the GPS but never "hot" and never even close to "hot" from playing graphic intensive games or any other CPU intensive app

Then you're special and probably the only person that can report that.

First, we must establish that "hot" is a relative term. Unless we get some temperatures going, there is no way to know if my "hot" is more or less that someone else's, and so on. I had an Evo3D. My "hot" is "omg, I burnt my damn ear trying to make a freakin phone call!" My "hot" in relation to my Evo4g was "I used the gps a while and now it's kind of warm". Can you grab a temperature when it's up there on the heat scale?

I've experienced that kind of hot. My photon got that hot a few times.

I returned my phone 3 times before I decided to actually test the temperature of the phone.
Download OS Monitor from the play store.
Per discussion with LG, you should not see temperatures that exceed 113 degrees F. The hottest I got my phone through extensive testing was 105 degrees (GPS on, moving around roaming zones, all while playing a video game).
Don't worry about the heat -- It is normal with this phone. There is always one or two posts where someone says "oh yeah, my phone never gets hot"... Just ignore it

Before the JB update, my OG would randomly heat up just from sitting in my office. I get plenty of signal here and don't often play games. I just picked it up off the desk before going to lunch and it was hotter than hell. Like, this-feels-like-it's-gonna-blow-up-soon hot. A quick reboot fixed that until it kept happening every week or so. It hasn't happened once since the update, though.
Over 100 degrees f
Mine got over 100. It sort of burned my hand when I picked it up. I measured the temperature accurately.
It doesn't help that the phone is glass on it's two largest surfaces and has no ventilation for passive cooling. Glass doesn't breathe and retains heat rather well. Probably not the smartest design idea when putting that much power inside a practically sealed glass box with no real means of ventilation.

I like to break stuff!
Little known fact, Kim Jong-Un stole an OG in order and it is actually what is generating heat at the core of his nuclear reactor.
OG's getting hot is widespread. Some measures have been taken to mitigate the heat, but there will always be processes that run that are just going to make this thing heat up.
Mine hit 112 F today. But I was at the beach and it was hot, and the phone is black. So...yea. Under normal circumstances it doesn't get that high. Regardless of what I'm doing.
I use a Sprint S3 and it gets pretty hot too, I've heard the S4 plus (s3 chip set) and the s4 pro (Optimus G chip set) gets pretty warm period. Qualcomm need to optimize the heat output better. But as long as it doesn't stay above 110-115 you'll be fine, it shouldn't fry the chip or anything.

Can anyone recommend an app to monitor temperature? I am not rooted and the few i tried didn't work.
My LGOG constantly shuts down due to temp while playing Ingress. Very frustrating. Usually have to hold out the window while driving to cool it down between portals...

I think I'm going to have my phone replaced, is becoming sluggish when its hot and always benchmarks way below average on 3dmark, quadrant, and antutu

It throttles performance when it heats up to prevent damage. Quad core processor + 2gb RAM + gpu - no forced air cooling = hot. We just gotta be careful.

i put mine in the freezer regularly to cool it down. works pretty well
Mine burned me today. Turned it on flight mode and put it next to my cold water bottle. I was in av area of low reception and was reading articles when it happened
