I woke up this morning and could not get the display to change. I normally have auto rotate on but nothing happenes when i turn the phone. The only way i can get the display to change back is to uncheck auto rotate. Iv tried pretty much everything except a factory reset which id rather not. I have insurance but this is a pretty minor claim. Anyone that could help id love to hear from you.
Thanks.

It sounds like the accelerometer might have failed. There's a calibration tool built in that you can run to see if it's responsive there. It shows two bubble level indicators. There are also apps that have similar display information. If they don't move when you move the phone around, then accelerometer may have died and you need to exchange.
have you tried the htc auto rotate widget?
Yep, thats what i thought. The sensor isnt picking up anything using both the stock app and a third party one. Im on my way to Verizon right now. Good thing i have insurance

Just an update on all of this, just returned from Verizon store after a nice birthday dinner, i started talking to a rep who didn't know what a g-sensor or anything else for that matter was. After explaining in extremely simple detail what its function was the man said that i was wrong and that my phone infact didnt have one of those sensors. I immediately requested to see a manager. This manager also happened to own a Droid incredible 2.. this is the best part, he said this was a brand new phone
With SENSE 3.0! After that i just walked out of the store. So ill be calling a service department im the morning. You would think if you work at the store you would know what parts of the phone are. Sorry for the wall of text. Hopefully this gets sorted out.

There is a device called a accelerometer and there is a device called a gyroscope. The I2 has an accelerometer, but not a gyroscope. I would be careful calling it a g-sensor as, yes, it can measure g-forces, but some may assume you are referring to a gyroscope.
Well I used both terms in the store to avoid confusion, but it's fine my replacement came this morning and everything works just fine.

My phone cracked a few weeks ago. Rather than pay the insurance claim, I bought an OEM screen for my phone and attempted to fix it myself. After taking out the old screen [with much difficulty] and putting in the new one, and repeating this quite a few times, the lovely white EVO screen finally
The only problem is the phone is on the lowest brightness setting, and I can not change it for the life of me. I got the app 'Screen Filter' which works very well to FURTHER darken the screen but not brighten.
The mobile network is also a mess..first I had nothing, then I got 1X, now I have 3G but it is very slow and unreliable. And the entire signal goes out depending on where I move the phone.
Finally, my front facing camera seems to have a shadow on the side. The back camera works fine, even though the flash is a little quick.
I would rather NOT go back into my phone, for fear of the screen not coming on again..but if I have to I will. Can anyone tell me what I need to do, or at least what part of the phone controls the brightness and 3G and where I can find it?
Thanks in Advance.
EDIT: Brightness works for now. Camera still has shadow on the side, and the mobile network shuffles between none, 1X, and 3G. None work properly as before. Using Synergy ROM btw.

Have you tried reverting to a stock rom then going back to synergey maybe the fact that you edited the hardware itself is causing synergey rom to flip out...

Good idea. I'll try re-flashing tonight
So, reflashing did not work at all..and now I have to put everything back together. Anyone else have any ideas?
Now you can enjoy SGS3 Smart Stay funcionality in HOX too. Download ISeeyou app from Play Store to get the feature.

Works perfect . Whether it drains battery.

Thanks. It works, now just have to monitor on the battery life.
Btw, would like to ask on the notification icon, is it possible to set it to show only when the "smart stay function" is activated during looking at screen?
Nothing happens on my one!!!!

Haha. You have to stare really really hard at the front camera. I kid
What's your screen off time? If you set it to the lowest for the screen to turn off after 15 sec, it might not work since the free version of the app detects your face every 20sec by default.
Get the paid version and you can set face detect time and scan time
it works quite well I must say

As @samuelong87 mention buy Premium version so that you can customize the time. It works perfectly at my side.
Smart Stay would be a nice feature to have but I would like to think that the app would somehow drain lots of battery.. abusing the front camera every half a minute or so would somehow have an impact I'm sure.
I wonder if the S3 would have enhanced battery life if they disabled the Smart Stay option.

i am wonder the same thing.
but i just purchased it and i will test
this is not interfering in any way to the auto brightness settings in in display as far as i can see.
it would be more than interesting to have an option to auto power off display after no face detecting (with customizable timing of course)
regards
Oh got it..thnx

Well, first impression on this app is that it's not really battery friendly, but it does what it is supposed to do very well. Maybe next releases will be better from this point of view.

This app appears not working when device is on horizontal position
It works here when I'm switching to landscape mode, maybe you're blocking the front camera with your finger a little bit ?

ISeeYou Causing Issues On My HOX
I have the HOX International. I used this app, and though it's a great concept, I was left largely dissatisfied by it.
While it works as advertised, I'm peeved with a couple of issues:
1) It blocks BOTH the front and back cameras. Try accessing the camera app while the service is ON and you only get a black screen.
2) It seems to hog battery occasionally (although this happens rarely).
3) I had the service to autostart, and received the shock of my life when around 1 hour into my day, I found that the rear camera was heating up. This might be a direct consequence of point 1 above.
I am on Stock and have the latest firmware update.
I don't know if any of you are facing these issues, but I've uninstalled the app ever since I started facing it.
Just a friendly heads up!

The camera works well here! But, when I launched it from lock screen, it was blank. After unlocking properly with the secure path I use, both front and back cameras worked! (Newest wwe firmware.)
BUT: it DOES brake Face Unlock! I already sent a bug report e-mail to the dev
Used to work ok,then stoped without reason and I got blank screen with stock and other camera app(FV 5 and ics+).Unistalled it,but still had to reboot phone to get camera working properly.Installed it again,it works now, stock camera is working as well as FV5,with ics + , it gets FC sometimes...very nice idea, needs some polishing.

I had haven't any problem as you wrote.
And also battery brain is normal from the moment front camera open for checking every 20". But no something special.
Anyway I think we dont need so match this future. At smartphones screen is so small, so when you read anything you need to scroll down. It's meaning if you touch the screen will continue to stay wakeup. I would like to have something like that in my iPad.
I can't get this working
Just recently, my Auto Rotate function broke.
I noticed it failing intermittently over the last couple of weeks, but didn't think anything of it, as I thought it was a setting issue.
But then the other day it failed completely.
The camera is stuck in Landscape mode, but the rest of the phone functions in Portrait mode.
I can't change either.
When I started trouble shooting a couple of days ago, I did the following:
- Power cycled the S3. Didn't fix the issue.
- recalibrated Gyro sensor. Still broken.
- Pulled battery for 30 seconds, reinstalled and rebooted phone. Auto Rotate was still broken. I repeated the process, and auto rotate started working again. But only for a couple of minutes, then it broken again.
- Repeated the above process, worked and then broke again.
- I reset my S3 to Factory Default, but Auto Rotate is still broken.
- Auto Rotate completely broken at this point.
I called Sprint, created an eticket, and went to the Sprint store. They checked it out, and verified that Auto Rotate is broken. They are ordering me a replacement S3 Pebble Blue, 32GB device. Hopefully I'll get a new device, and not a refurbed.
I don't know why Auto Rotate broke, but I hope it is not a widespread issue, as I'd hate for it to keep breaking.
Auto Rotate used to be a simple function, but Samsung added a few options to the Auto rotate feature, maybe complicated the way it works, which is prone more to breaking the feature. I don't know.
I just noticed that my Screen Off while on a call is not working. I checked the appropriate setting.
I'm unsure when exactly that function broke, and I don't think it's related to the Auto rotate function, as it's a different sensor.
I used to be able to cover the sensor with my hand, and the screen would shut off, but not anymore.
Anyway, if anyone else is having the above issue(s), it may not be a setting issue, but a hardware failure.
Maybe you turned auto rotate off?

That was one of the first things I made sure of.
Are you running a custom launcher like apex or holo? If so, the launcher settings will override your phone settings. If you have a custom launcher, make sure that auto rotate is enabled in both the launcher and system settings.

As I mentioned, I reset the S3 to Factory Default, and still have the issues.
The Auto Rotate is still broken, as is the Screen Off sensor during calls.
I am running ADW Launcher Ex, but the above doesn't work with either the stock or ADW Launcher.
As for the proximity sensor, make sure that you don't have any apps that use the sensor as a function such as "wave control".

No apps, as my apps are at a minimum since I'm swapping out phones Tuesday.
I didn't even bother to Root this S3 again.
Sounds to me like you just got a defective device. Hopefully the replacement will be good! I have not heard of many problems with this phone at all so I am sure you will be good to go with the next one.
wow! i'm having the exact same issue, guess i'll unroot and swap it... thanks for the post (a year later )

It's only been a couple of months
as of today my s3 will not rotate from portrait to landscape, when i am messaging/ on the internet, nothing, ive reboot phone, ive checked and unchecked auto rotate screen, ive reset everything in CWM, and nothing seems to be working at all ive switched from stock rom to custom rom and still screen doesnt rotate at all, but will rotate on an app in landscape mode only but that's it, i hope someone can help me, ive got in touch with samsung and they have me do what ive already have been and that if i turn it in for repairs, it will cost me some money, if this is hardware issue wouldnt it be covered under the warranty? anyways i am the sprint version, but i have it flashed over to page plus cellular, everything was working great up until today.
Something might have happened to your accelerometer. Get a spirit level app and see of it works.

Depending on the rom, aosp/tw, you are using a launcher that supports rotating AND have it checked to rotate in the launcher?

i have SS ODEXED BLUE HOLY GRAIL, and it has worked for me before but when i downloaded bakery story which is in landscape mode only, i noticed that is when i can only go into landscape mode is when i play that game or use an app that is landscape only,
ive used all sorts of different calibration/accelerometer and nothing is working so i reinstall bakery story again to see if i can get into landscape but ONLY on the game or other landscape app, so i have no idea as to how to fix this, doesnt sound like its hardware since i can still get into landscape but just not in text/internet/picture gallery, etc
Try to clean flash another from first and if that doesn't work you may have to get a replacement phone.
There was a thread a while back and I think the guy reverted to stock and just took it to the Sprint Store.

so did just that odin flash stock rom and it is still the same, i guess its not the end of the world since i dont really do landscape or especially prefer so just wanted to see if there is anything that can be done to fix...but its just strange that when i play racing games or any other game it will go into landscape and then rotate back normal.
