Get Smart Stay functionality on HOX - HTC One X

Now you can enjoy SGS3 Smart Stay funcionality in HOX too. Download ISeeyou app from Play Store to get the feature.

Works perfect . Whether it drains battery.

Thanks. It works, now just have to monitor on the battery life.
Btw, would like to ask on the notification icon, is it possible to set it to show only when the "smart stay function" is activated during looking at screen?

Haha. You have to stare really really hard at the front camera. I kid
What's your screen off time? If you set it to the lowest for the screen to turn off after 15 sec, it might not work since the free version of the app detects your face every 20sec by default.
Get the paid version and you can set face detect time and scan time
it works quite well I must say

As @samuelong87 mention buy Premium version so that you can customize the time. It works perfectly at my side.

Smart Stay would be a nice feature to have but I would like to think that the app would somehow drain lots of battery.. abusing the front camera every half a minute or so would somehow have an impact I'm sure.
I wonder if the S3 would have enhanced battery life if they disabled the Smart Stay option.

i am wonder the same thing.
but i just purchased it and i will test
this is not interfering in any way to the auto brightness settings in in display as far as i can see.
it would be more than interesting to have an option to auto power off display after no face detecting (with customizable timing of course)

Well, first impression on this app is that it's not really battery friendly, but it does what it is supposed to do very well. Maybe next releases will be better from this point of view.

It works here when I'm switching to landscape mode, maybe you're blocking the front camera with your finger a little bit ?

ISeeYou Causing Issues On My HOX
I have the HOX International. I used this app, and though it's a great concept, I was left largely dissatisfied by it.
While it works as advertised, I'm peeved with a couple of issues:
1) It blocks BOTH the front and back cameras. Try accessing the camera app while the service is ON and you only get a black screen.
2) It seems to hog battery occasionally (although this happens rarely).
3) I had the service to autostart, and received the shock of my life when around 1 hour into my day, I found that the rear camera was heating up. This might be a direct consequence of point 1 above.
I am on Stock and have the latest firmware update.
I don't know if any of you are facing these issues, but I've uninstalled the app ever since I started facing it.
Just a friendly heads up!

The camera works well here! But, when I launched it from lock screen, it was blank. After unlocking properly with the secure path I use, both front and back cameras worked! (Newest wwe firmware.)
BUT: it DOES brake Face Unlock! I already sent a bug report e-mail to the dev

Used to work ok,then stoped without reason and I got blank screen with stock and other camera app(FV 5 and ics+).Unistalled it,but still had to reboot phone to get camera working properly.Installed it again,it works now, stock camera is working as well as FV5,with ics + , it gets FC sometimes...very nice idea, needs some polishing.

I had haven't any problem as you wrote.
And also battery brain is normal from the moment front camera open for checking every 20". But no something special.
Anyway I think we dont need so match this future. At smartphones screen is so small, so when you read anything you need to scroll down. It's meaning if you touch the screen will continue to stay wakeup. I would like to have something like that in my iPad.

I can't get this working

Is this par for the course?

So picked this phone up yesterday and so far the major issues i've come across are:
Random touch screen issue - I'll use the phone normally for a while but sometimes when i'm playing a game (NOVA... which i deleted now) or strolling through a menu (happened in olive tree reader and the amazon store) a small area of the screen will spaz out... it's also happened on the stock lock screen and then persisted a few seconds after I rebooted to get rid of the issue. It's annoying because just as soon as I'm ready to chalk it up as a fluke or some random app issue... it shows up again somewhere else. Now.. this isn't during "one handed operation".. the device is in my left hand.. no fingers on the screen... using my right index finger to do the navigating.
Quite a few apps just don't work - all of my gameloft stuff, Age of Zombies, the video creator app (Samsung... your own freeking app?!?), and a handfull of others either crash immediately, don't start, or crash after seemingly opening just fine. Sidenote... so after a night off it's feet Age of Zombies is working this morning.
signal issues - the reception on this phone it utterly attrocious. I'll go from 5 bars (never the full 6) down to 2 without moving... which means it's a grip issue. I've cupped the bottom portion of the phone (around where the capacitive buttons and the back "lip" are) and watch my signal degrade while removing my hands brings that signal right back... also.. i'm ONE ROOM over from my wireless router and the signal hovers around none to 2 bars on the wifi indicator... HOWEVER... now that I'm at work.. i'm on my corporate wifi.. great reception... cell strength? 5 or 6 bars.... what the feezy.
So.. in a nutshell are these issues normal? should I return this for another unit? I absolutely LOVE this phone... as a pda. It's fast, i dig the large screen, i heart android and touchwiz is actually kinda cool so i may not root this thing with all that said it's just been a little unreliable and I need to be sure that this device will work when i need it to.
Thanks for the input guys.
Reception is a known problem that sprint has acknowledged, they say they are working on a fix.
The screen spazzes out when charging, if it is spazzing out at other times your phone is not normal.
Apps crash sometimes when I start then, but restarting the app usually works fine.
All mobile OS's are beta because they are young. In the 90s windows was even more unstable, and became more stable with time.

If you have probs with apps crashing, try a factory restore. Also check when the app was last updated by the dev, it may just be out of date and written for 2.1

It's not likely to be an outdated app, these were all apps I was using (successfully) on my G2x, until I sold it and bought the GS2 the same day.
I'm glad to know these are KNOWN issues that either have reasonable workarounds or are being worked on. I can deal without games, all of my essentials (productivity apps) are working. Thanks people.

Missing Features ?

Had the phone a few days now and aside from the volume issues which I hope will be solved I have three other issues.
Can someone confirm 100% that there is no FM Radio - I'm 99.9% sure but I've seen threads from other people saying the radio quality is good.
No Self-Timer on the camera - I went to take a photo the other day and went to set the timer so I could be in it and there isn't one.
I can't seem to find anywhere to set the email sync frequency times (i.e. so it doesn't send email notifications in the middle of the night.
I've come from an HTC Desire HD and all of these features were standard so a little annoyed if they're all gone.
Were you running a stock HTC sense ROM?
I assume the camera additions were HTC's camera?
I thought stock Android used push notifications rather than polling and pulling every 5 minutes?? Maybe what you had was another HTC Sense feature?
Everything was standard out of the box, unlocked.
I know the Galaxy S2 has a self timer, also a radio, not sure about the email settings part though. I can set how often on the Nexus to pull from 5 minutes to 1 hour - but can't see any option of muting (off peak mode) it through the night so I don't get woken up every 10 minutes (business emails +100 a day)
I can confirm 100% there IS no FM radio on my Galaxy Nexus
The HTC Sense skin, in the same way that Samsung's TouchWiz does, adds lots of custom functionality on top of standard ASOP Android.
Maybe there are some apps out there to replicate what your Sense stuff used to do?
So to answer your thread title....... they aren't "missing features"...... its because you aren't running a HTC Sense ROM.

I disagree I'd still say they are missing features, If they were present in AOSP there'd be no need for HTC & Samsung et al to add them. Having a timer in the camera app is pretty basic functionality that should really be present as standard.

so now the AOSP camera version has time laps video option, and video effects (change you faces while recording video),
do you then call this missing features for the rest of the phones?

I understand what you're saying but to me a self-timer is a basic function that's found on most phones I've come across - the other effects are nice but in my mind not as essential as a timer.
I disagree with that. YOU look for those features. I currently been through 5 devices in the past few months that don't have your "missing" features. They are missing to YOU, but THEY are not standard features. I'd say only 10% at best of all the phones out there have those features so it's far standard(note: I do not know the exact %, but it has to be less than 20%)

Android tends doesn't notify in the middle of the night.. I'm not exactly sure how it does it but I sleep right next to a tablet and a phone both of which beep merrily during the day but I never get a peep out of them overnight.

What you're asking for and 'sync frequency' are 2 different things. You're looking for something to silence notifications at night; sync frequency is how often the phone pulls new data down for your accounts.
The name is slipping my mind right now (will update if I find it!), but there are definitely apps in the market that silence the phone for different intervals, such as over night. ROMs like CM7 have this built in as "quiet hours". You can choose to silence notifications but not alarms or phone calls, etc.
Check out Sweet Dreams. Think it'll do what you want.
Could also look at Bedside (Night Clock). It has a "white list" to block some notifications and not others.
The app Tasker is a bit overkill for just this (unless you use for other things too), but it'll do what you're asking.

That's probably because you are a heavy sleeper mate. Also people send out less emails and texts at night.
Anyway there are certain apps you can use to either change your sound profiles at certain times, or to disable data syncing. Personally I use Juice Defender to turn off data at night when I'm not using the phone. I don't have to set silent mode at night cause I am a heavy sleeper too and phone beeps don't wake me up.

I'd be surprised if only 10% of new camera phones had a self-timer function. It's a bit like saying a flash for the camera shouldn't be standard as they never existed on the first camera phones but you'd sure as heck kick up a stink if a new phone was released without a flash for the camera wouldn't you ? Or how about a car with manual locking instead of central locking. Surely with a phone of this caliber a self-timer isn't exactly a special feature.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm finding, I'm not receiving emails after a certain time on my phone. I work with a lot of companies in the US and I'm in the UK so I do many late nights and I want to be able to set when emails arrive or don't on my phone, not when they think I should be sleeping or awake otherwise I end up sitting with my phone and laptop both out if I'm expecting an important mail to arrive rather than relaxing in bed with the phone by my side, and even a manual refresh doesn't bring the mails down after a certain time.

I don't have my GN yet, so I can only comment on your first question: I'm pretty sure, if people talk about radio quality, they mean either the quality of mobile signal reception or the sound/speech quality of incoming and outgoing calls. Radio quality most definitely doesn't refer to an actual FM Radio.
So to make a long story short: There's no FM Radio in the GN.

[App] Flip Case Control - Auto Screen On/Off

I need help with testing for this device and flip style cases.
I had a bunch of requests for Wave Control to have this functionality. Flip Case Control simply turns off the screen with the case is closed and turns it on when it is opened and it is designed to work using as little battery as possible. (I left it running all night ~8.5 hours and the battery dipped 1% more than usual)
IMPORTANT: If your case is black or dark on the inside, the sensor doesn't read correctly when the case is closed. To fix this, put a piece of light colored tape on the inside of the case where it lines up with the sensor (located next to the front camera)
Note: A Samsung based ROM is required. CM doesn't seem to work well.
Demo video:
Thanks! (crossing fingers it works without needing modification)

This should use quite a bit less battery than that app. The method employed on it prevents your phone from reaching deep sleep when idle. But, because of that will react quicker. So, it's a tradeoff. I chose battery life over response.
Also Flip Case Control is compatible with lock screens if you need the security.

Really - Really Liking the new program ..
Its Soooo nice to have the phone turn on automatically!
Not sure whats up .. But I rebooted and the program didn't restart
with the phone .. had to restart the program and it started working.
Also .. Over night I checked battery level it was at 81% when I went to bed.
In the morning I had 78% - 3% over night!
Just a thought to save battery ..
how about from 12am - 6am have the program unload / turn off ?
That way should be 0 loss over night
BTW .. I removed the white tape ..
And it is working fine now with my leather gray case! LOL
No Idea why it started working.

That's a good idea. I can set it up like in my other app Data Sleep.
I just put out a new version to the play store. But, now I'm thinking it may behave differently on the T-Mobile version due to the different sensor..

Version 1.10
Just put out to the Play Store V1.10:
-Reworked detection method much more robust now
-Option to disable the sensitivity changes from V1.05
-Option for longer timeout for Screen Off
Let me know if I broke anything!
Works great on Tmobile.
Does the newer version offer better battery savings ?
Im more worried about Bat life than anything else what would be optimal settings for that.

New version should be about the same but handle different open and close speeds better. For the best battery life, don't enable the longer screen off timeout... since this leaves the screen on longer and so that uses more battery.
Next version will have a night time disable option so you can set times to turn off the sensor since you won't be using the phone while you sleep. It won't have that much affect on battery life (only really drains at most 1% overnight as it is) but will keep you from running the sensor 24/7.
Version 1.20:
1. New Swipeable UI - Swipe left for settings, Swipe right for Night Disable
2. New Night Disable Mode - Shut off the sensor at night while you sleep. Saves a tiny bit of battery and keeps you from keeping the sensor on 24/7.
3. Auto Start on Boot works on the Trial Version now.
4. Bug fixes
I'm still not happy with the UI. It's functional for presenting the new functionality but I need to polish it up a bit.
What do you all think?
Any other features/options you would like to see?

I would like to see a free but full working version without additional feature such as Night mode, sensitivity settings and enable/disable screen on/off sound, full version with all of them.

Is 14.3.A.0.757 as bug-free and stable as .114?

I’m usually the first to hit the Update button on anything I own, but after reading about all the bugs that Sony introduced with the firmware updates following .114, I chose not to update mine. I’ve been stuck with a permanent notification in my Notification Shade informing me of the update ever since but that is a small price to pay for a relatively bug-free phone.
Now that .757 is released, is it safe to take the plunge? I am in no particular hurry because I cannot think on anything in KitKat that I particularly want and I know that Sony hasn’t fixed my major issues with the phone anyway. I know the camera isn’t any better in low light, the proximity sensor lag remains and the fast dormancy “feature” that drains up to 40% of the phone’s battery every day is still there.
But if it is as stable as .114, I’d like to be on the latest and greatest again. Your opinion is welcome. Thank you.
Android 4.4 has a general bug with the sound (google problem) but apart from that I can't find anything wrong. Battery seems great. In fact I like it better than the 4.3 rom.

Oh yes, I was nothing but shocked when I installed KK - I'm mean is this an open source droid or a locked down fruit phone?
Not to forget to mention that email+exchange permissions is changed (for my company mail which uses ms exchange servers).
PIN requirement is not enough on KK, only password with atleast 4 letters, 2 numbers and 3 signs
Takes a week to unlock your phone unless you root and install an old hacked version of email+exchange.apk+the risk of getting sacked (if they would find out).
Only thing I miss from KK is the Stamina icon but the GEL Xperia Xposed dev is looking into porting it :good:

Thanks for the responses, guys. Are there any new features in KitKat, from either Google or Sony, worth updating for?

There is an Xposed mod: http://repo.xposed.info/module/org.flacid.exchangebypass
i've been in kk using RomAur 3.0 and performs great. No bugs, wifi is more stable (but wiht the same cuts and problems of stock 757 rom) than 114.

I considered rooting it but the process seems to be far too convoluted for me to attempt. I'm happy with stock.

Why do you think it is better than Sony’s Camera app? It does not remove the low light issue (where the camera bumps up the ISO much more than it strictly needs to and makes the photos a grainy, unusable mess) and it does not have a manual mode, so you can tackle it yourself. While I like the sparse interface, I have to stick with Sony’s app, because this phone’s camera is useless without manual mode in low light.
Also, on an unrelated note, can any one of you help me get the Personalised Recognition feature back in Google Now? I used to have it in the settings menu but don’t anymore. It disappeared while I was on .114 and I was hoping that updating to .757 would bring it back, but it hasn’t. Do you guys have it?
Sorry to keep bumping my own thread, but this message is just to help out other users who are thinking of installing this update. My recommendation is: go for it!
I had a long list of annoyances with this phone, but I updated to .757 yesterday and it has fixed almost all the issues I had on .114. The major issues that have been addressed:
The Fast Dormancy bug seems to be gone. That Android process that was eating up 40% of my battery life every day no longer shows up on the battery usage screen.
The proximity sensor delay is gone. You bring the phone away from your ear and the display turns on instantly. Magic!
So far, I have no experienced the keyboard skipping issue, so I hope that is taken care of as well.
The only major issue that remains is that the camera is still terrible in low light, thanks to the software that bumps up the ISO needlessly to insane levels. But I can live with that.
I no longer regret buying this thing.

I know it's not really a solution, but keep your cam in manual mode and alter the ISO manually. Every phone I've ever used with a camera (iPhones are particularly bad offenders) ALWAYS overcompensate on the ISO in every single environment other than outside on a bright day.
You'll get spectacular improvements if you just get into the habit of entering manual mode, and altering the ISO to the lowest you can get away with (while keeping all the other options on auto) each time you're taking a photo. As far as Im concerned it's far better that way and produces better results than either superior auto or the iPhone's one-button-capture simplicity.
Thanks. I already do that but the default camera app does not make it easy to change the ISO. It takes at least five taps from within the main camera interface to change the ISO and come back. Often, by the time you are done experimenting with the ISO settings, the subject has moved on. Or you end up with a reasonably well lit but blurry shot because the camera UI makes no attempt to inform you of the shutter speed when you take the shot. I have no found any camera apps on the Play Store that make up for these deficiencies either.

Good thing for me that went from .114 directly to .757 (i am rooted also)
Camera app have now a 15Meg option
Transparency
Bad things
Conversations.apk (the SMS/MMS app from Sony) is full of bugs. And when I mean full, I really mean it.
Sometimes messages that i already read in the conversations, disappears. All I would see is the blue bubble showing that there's a message, but without the text of the messages. So far this seems to only affect SMS, not MMS.
The color of the bubble when you type, let say blue, and the color of the bubble of the other person talking to you, let say faded blue, often get switch, so reading a conversation might become difficult.
To get the difficulty level higher in following your conversation, sometimes even the side of the screen your bubble is supposed to be attached switch. I mean here, that when you type, your message is next to right side, and your friends reply is next to left side. But now, sometimes you switch side all of a sudden, or worst, sometimes you're on the same side then your interlocutor. Reading SMS with the conversation.apk is totally hardcore now.
Another thing that really piss be off, but I do not know if this is from 757 or if it was already in 114, since I did not use this app in 114, it is the Email software. The Email software stacks/bundles all the messages with the same subjet title when someone reply or transfer your email. (like Gmail does in a browser by default). I really hate this functionality, I prefer to just scroll down to see the previous message if I need to. Unfortunately for me, there's no option in the app to unstack/ungroup emails messages.
Another problem I have with the Email app, this is a bug, because it wasn't doing this in previous build, it is that the Small yellow icon on the icon that tells you that there's 1,2,3 what ever number unread messages, and also the Mail icon in the notification bar, does not go away upon opening the email message. You need to actually press the back button to exit the new messages for it to be marked as read, so that the icon and the notification bar adjust. So if you open an email messages, press the home button to do whatever else, then look back at your notification bar or email icon, you'll think you got new email message, but in fact, it's the same one that is still marked as unread, even if you did open it and read it...
Email and SMS/MMS apps are what I use the most on my phone, I've been using them since I got my first Xperia X10 Mini Pro that was running 1.6, but I've never had that much trouble, they have so many annoying bugs right now. The only problem I've had was the notification LED bug on my Xperia Mini Pro running ICS.
Another thing that I hate, but this is not from 757, but from JellyBean. I come from ICS, and what I hate the most, is the damn white background of all apps. It use more battery and it hurts my eyes in low light room even with minimum brightness. I just wish a stable CyanogenMod with black background pops like in ICS so that I can install it. I've seen some topic about it over here, but they only explain how to uncompile and recompile, too much complicated, I'd rather simply have a package I could simply install with CWM.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention another bug. Somehow the auto-rotate of the screen stopped working twice in the last 2 weeks. Each time I need to go in the accessibility options and uncheck/recheck the auto-rotate option to fix this. (grrr need to wait 5 minutes to be able to edit my msg #xdaforumantispam)
This phone has an LED-backlit LCD display. It does not affect the phone's battery life whether the screen is white or black. Not enough to make a practical difference, in any case.

How to schedule downloads on android

Hi, just got an HTC One m8 2 weeks back.
I would like to know whether it's possible for me to schedule movie downloads to occur at midnight etc. I get peak and off peak data so trying to make use of the off peak data without having to stay up till 1am. I tried some apps, like IFTTT but no dice.
Anyone have any workaround?
Also, how do I know whether my camera is suffering from the scratched lens issue? I can't seem to tell.
Regards,
Ishaq

Try a download manager app, such as Advanced Download Manager. I think ADM (and others) has this feature.

If you can't tell, you probably don't have an issue. Once the coating on the lens starts to get scratched (its just the coating coming off, not the glass being scratched), you can actually see the scratches if you look closely at the lens. But more importantly, your photos will start to look cloudy or hazy, a lot like a fingerprint smudge on the lens. And this will increase gradually as the issue gets worse.
Thanks for the response. I downloaded ADM and it works.
I can see some really fine scratches on the lens, almost like dots. However, no noticeable haze in the images.
One more issue. Do you also sometimes suffer from keyboard errors. Sometimes, occasionally I'll open a field to type and instead of the keyboard coming up, it's just a black bar. However, this black bar still reads my keyboard inputs. It's like a glitch in the OS.

If the coating is starting to scratch, it will probably get worse over time until it affects your photos. But no need to worry about it until that happens.

I've heard a couple complaints like that, but I haven't experienced it myself.
Is the phone stock or modded (unlocked bootloader, root, etc.)?
Yeah, I'm completely stock. Native keyboard, no launchers.
It's happened like 5 times in ten days. Usually sorts itself out by exiting whatever application I'm using.

See the black bar problem. But it still reads inputs. Why did it keep doing this?

For a stock phone, you can try a factory reset or to update by OTA (if one is available). Not much else you can do on stock.
You can search around to see if this a common issue on your OS software version (and if there are any other possible fixes). But I don't think so. I've seen maybe one other person mention it, but it doesn't seem like a common problem.
