screen wont rotate - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

as of today my s3 will not rotate from portrait to landscape, when i am messaging/ on the internet, nothing, ive reboot phone, ive checked and unchecked auto rotate screen, ive reset everything in CWM, and nothing seems to be working at all ive switched from stock rom to custom rom and still screen doesnt rotate at all, but will rotate on an app in landscape mode only but that's it, i hope someone can help me, ive got in touch with samsung and they have me do what ive already have been and that if i turn it in for repairs, it will cost me some money, if this is hardware issue wouldnt it be covered under the warranty? anyways i am the sprint version, but i have it flashed over to page plus cellular, everything was working great up until today.

Something might have happened to your accelerometer. Get a spirit level app and see of it works.

Depending on the rom, aosp/tw, you are using a launcher that supports rotating AND have it checked to rotate in the launcher?

i have SS ODEXED BLUE HOLY GRAIL, and it has worked for me before but when i downloaded bakery story which is in landscape mode only, i noticed that is when i can only go into landscape mode is when i play that game or use an app that is landscape only,
ive used all sorts of different calibration/accelerometer and nothing is working so i reinstall bakery story again to see if i can get into landscape but ONLY on the game or other landscape app, so i have no idea as to how to fix this, doesnt sound like its hardware since i can still get into landscape but just not in text/internet/picture gallery, etc

Try to clean flash another from first and if that doesn't work you may have to get a replacement phone.
There was a thread a while back and I think the guy reverted to stock and just took it to the Sprint Store.

so did just that odin flash stock rom and it is still the same, i guess its not the end of the world since i dont really do landscape or especially prefer so just wanted to see if there is anything that can be done to fix...but its just strange that when i play racing games or any other game it will go into landscape and then rotate back normal.

autorotation not working?

So autorotation doesn't seem be working unless I open the slide keyboard. Yes the function is checked in settings. And I am running slidemeroot5 final version with a2sd. Any one else notice this or is there something else I can do?
also it seems to work if i am in messages screen but if im on th e main menu or drawer it wont change
Please Rid your self of that Rom and update to slidemeroot5r1
Hello.
Thanks for the response, I was running the slidemeroot5r1(I know I wasn't clear on that)
I reinstalled the rom just incase and I still have the same issue. If I'm on the home menu or open the drawer it will not rotate, if I'm in text messages or on the web it seems to work fine.
Tsk.....Tsk.... the home screen is like the original slide rom wich also dsnt turn with auto rotate. The only thing he rlly changed was taking the bubbles off and taking out some apps as far as I know I also tryed to see if its just ur fone its not its the rom.

All Android OEM dont turn on rotation unless you open the keyboard thats the way its made. Its ment that way for the homescreen thats why if you have tried The Legend rom or Aria rom when you open the keyboard the launcher or app drawer are all glitchy.....the Legend an Aria dont have keyboards and dont turn on homescreen hence the glitch if that made sense hhaha

Apps rotation will lag - why?

So this has been driving me nuts ever since froyo. I don't recall my phone ever doing this before 2.2
I use Handscent for sms and lets say I open it up and are going through messages while in landscape mode. Once I am done I will hit home and set the phone back down. Then when a message comes in I will pick up the phone and check it and it opens handscent back in up Landscape mode even though I am holding the phone upright. There is at least a second lag before the phone switches it back to the correct position.
This is not just with handscent but any other program that supports landscape. It's really annoying and I have hard reset more than once since froyo. The app remembers what position it was in rather than just dected the correct position in the first place. I have also tried calibrating but the phone knows what to rotate so the rotation works fine it's just the app likes to remember the last position it was in rather than the current. I don't recall this being a problem on 2.1
Is there a way to fix it? It's trying me nuts
I have a friend who also has an evo hardware build 2 (mine is 3) and that phone doesn't take nearly as long as mine. You can still see it remembers the position you of the screen when you go back in, but it flips back rather quickly where mine takes up to 4-5 seconds.
I have tried recalibrating the g-sensor numerous times. Also when I am just rotating the phone back and forth it rotates the screen very quickly, the only time it lags is when I back out of an ap and go back in later.
anyone have any ideas?
Anyone?

Are you running a stock froyo kernel?I have hardware version 002 and am running Netarchy's 4.0.3 kernel over clocked to 1.15 ghz.I can see what you're talking about but my screen rotates to the correct position almost instantly.

I am running everything stock, non-root and no over clocking - I might have to try hard resting again - not sure what else to do

Running Fresh 3.1.0.2 with net's 4.1.8 and I get the same thing with certain apps. No idea why though.

Well I thought I would post an update - I ended up doing a hard reset. The odd thing is I have hard reset twice since I got the froyo update. However the first 2 times (both times I had the problem with rotation lag) I reset using the settings under SD & phone storage.
When I reset last night I used the bootloader to reset it. The lag is now gone (you can still see it rotate but it's fast now where as before it would take up to 5 seconds to kick in only when going back into an app though)
So anyone else having this problem I would just hard reset using the key combination. I have not recalibrate the g-sensor. I am also keeping an eye on what I install to see if a certain app brings the lag back but so far everything I have installed it seems fine. Not sure what was stuck in the phone or what was going on, I never used a task killer or anything. It was driving me crazy since a lot of time I would back out of an app in landscape and go back in there portrait and it would lag.
So anyway I will report back if it comes back but hopefully it stays gone.

It's working now and the only time I had a problem was going back in to an app I left in landscape otherwise it was fast and correct. I think it's a software problem.

[Q] auto rotation

Good day all,
I have a problem with my nexus 7 (2013)'s auto rotation .It suddenly stopped for no reason. is there a solution for this problem and if I put a custom Rom does it fix this thing??
Please Help
Thanks
Settings / accessibility /auto rotate screen is it checked?
Does it happen everywhere, even in apps? I would check the settings first and maybe try a cold-boot and then a reset on the device.

it does not work even in the games. it doesn't rotate unless an app designed for vertical or horizontal .
I did I factory reset and it didn't work. If you have something tell me what to do please.
Thank you

I had this problem as well a few days ago. What I did (which seemed to fix it) was I went in recovery and wiped my dalvic cache. 3 days since and only time will tell if this is a permanent solution.:fingers-crossed:
Yesterday I had also a rotation problem:
When I set autorotation to "off“, it always went to landscape mode, regardless in which position it was atm. It was absolutely not possible to lock the screen rotation in portrait mode.
After a reboot all was back to normal - strange though!

mine just got the same problem since yesterday! really need help
My rotation isn't working nor is the gyroscope. Started on stock UN rooted , then I rooted it and flashed kangabean and now the latest official CM build and it isn't working on any of those either. I'm thinking mine is hardware and not software related

We'll turns out that my other nexus 7 tab that I got for my mother is having the same issues with the accelerometer and gyroscope like I am. So I am going to be taking both back to bestbuy and either exchanging them or returning them.

Rotation stuck in upside down portrait???

Hey guys,
Just thought I'd ask. Today my n7 seems to be stuck in upside down portrait! Turning rotation in and off doesn't do anything, nor does rebooting. And it won't rotate to landscape. I haven't done a factory reset yet, hoping to avoid it. Just thought I'd ask her first.
There are some root apps that can force rotation ...

I've had this happen today also, in the recent past I had it lock on landscape (with the back camera behind the upper left corner). I had been using a non-standard kernel, and switched back to the stock, but it didn't seem to stop the problem. I read in another thread that there may be some problems with the sensors, perhaps affected by the on-off magnet in a smart case. I don't know that that is a problem, but I did just recently get a new smart polio case and if that's the problem I'll get something else!
Dga, since the last update I haven't bothered rerooting mine. Currently is sick standard.
Mbam, I do use a poetic brand case with magnet.
For the sake of it I might just factory reset and see what happens. Might even reinstall the stock rom, or maybe try L.
Well that was just seriously whack. My new laptop hasn't been connected to my nexus 7, and I thought I should re-root and back it up before I do anything. So I connected it to my laptop, waited until whatever drivers had been installed, then suddenly the n7 screen flipped around to normal, and now all rotation angles seem to be working again!!
I love technology......

[Q] Tab S 8.4 will not auto-rotate screen! Stuck on portrait.

I just got the Tab S 8.4 yesterday and I am trying to figure if I am missing something. My screen will not rotate, it will stay in portrait mode all the time, it will not go to landscape mode on anything...youtube, internet, gallery, etc. Yes...the SCREEN ROTATION is on in settings. I have turned it on and off and still nothing. I even went ahead and did a reset. Still nothing.
Am I missing something?
Probably not, just need to return it. Something might be wrong with its hardware or software that will not make the screen rotate.
Is screen rotation highlighted when you pull down the notification panel? If it is download SENSOR BOX FOR ANDROID from play and see if the orientation sensor is working.

Screen Rotation is highlighted when I pull down the notification panel. I will download the app and check it out. I mean, what can I do anyways if it does show that the sensor is working correctly?
Are you using a different launcher?

at least you will know the hardware is working. You could also try SET ORIENTATION from play to see if you can force it.

Set orientation did work. It did change the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape. But it stood that way, meaning everything was either going to be stuck in portrait mode or landscape.
As for the launcher...its stock touchwiz. I have not tried any other launchers.
What was the result of the sensor test?

im not home with the tablet yet. All those things I did yesterday night. I will try the sensor test first thing when i get home.
Ok, I downloaded app and no good. The gyroscope sensor did not move correctly. The accelerometer sensor showed me the worse. The ball just rolled to the top right corner and stood there. Did not move at all, even when I slam down on any direction. Returning this tablet.
Thanks everyone.

I bought an Open Box for about $90 off from Best Buy, the 10.5 Tab S, and had the same issue with no rotation of screen. I only tested it with other programs that will change orientation for you, and it worked then, but not automatically, only when using the app. I checked all settings, including accessibility, I flushed the cache using the Recovery mode, but no luck. I did get lucky though at Best Buy, as they were awesome and ended up giving me a brand new one in exchange, without any additional charge. There may be some manufacturing defects in the sensors that are causing these issues. Good luck to you too sir.
Ive seen it said that some people, who've had the same problem, gave the tablet a sharp slap on the back to fix it.

My Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 just exhibited the same problem today. A sharp slap to the back of the tablet did fix it...
Thanks.
i know this thread is 1 year old however i purchased a brand new S2 8 inch tablet from canada computers and it too will not rotate the screen on its own. If i use a 3rd party software it has no issues rotating but it stays that way until i rotate it otherwise manually. Brand new less than 1 day old and i already have to warranty it with Samsung disappointed that such a premium tablet having an issue out of the box. Also all sensor software in install all indicate there are no sensors installed.
Edit: ok now everything works great and all sensors work now on Sensor Box. I had to do a hard cache reset of the cache partition using that dos look alike menu at startup.

This confuses me since the Android settings Backup / Restore has "Factory Reset" which I did twice and it didn't work, then I pressed power button, volume up and home button to bring up the other menu on bootup and selected the format cache partition option. This resolved the issue and was happy I didn't loose my data unlike the backup/restore had wiped all my data. Is that still considered a factory reset? I did see the option to factory reset but didn't select it, I opted to try the cache partition instead which I was glad had worked. Saved me from taking my new unit back to be repaired.
theres an app called bubble level (spirit level) i used to re-calibrate my sensor since there isn't a built in way anymore, if the slapping doesn't work or you don't wanna risk it try that.
