NFC future uses on nexus - programmable nfc stickers - Nexus 7 Themes and Apps

Samsung have identified some really good uses for nfc beyond mobile payments and data transfer: programmable nfc stickers that interact with your device to perform whatever function you like. Would love to see something like this on the nexus in the near future. With a fully featured app it could be pretty cool (and useful). Just off the top of my head:
start your music player and auto connect to wireless/bluetooth speakers
you're watching video on the nexus, but arms are tired so set it down on the table and the video instantly beams over to your telly
swipe over your laptop to auto sync/backup files
spam all your friends with an email

I believe Sony started this idea with the Xperia S device. They sold little tags that you could use to turn wifi on, set alarms and pretty much control your system via NFC.

However, Sony doesn't use stickers, They have "SmartTags".

Here's a great place to start. The more I look the more interesting NFC gets.

I liked reading that article about iFans saying this was copied from Apple?! Apple doesn't even have NFC in their newest iFone5.
The article says the stickers are like 5 for $15 but I thought they were pennies?

There's so much potential, seems a quicker/better solution than barcode scanning; eg. museums and galleries could tag exhibits to provide you with more information. i can see advertisers on tube/buses using this as well.

Most fun had with nfc so far..
Using nfc task launcher and tasker, to make beeping a tag, say something.
Most useful other then payments
I put one of the tagsfordroid stickers in my engine bay.
When I change the oil, I put the oil I used (sometimes i switch between mobil1 and royal purple) and the amount of miles on the car, and the amount of miles when it's due for another change.
I can simply beep the tag, and I know what I'm working with. Then I just rewrite it after another change.

check out this site cheaper tags
http://www.tagstand.com/collections/nfc-kits/products/nfc-task-launcher-pack-6-tags
this might be cheaper then the samsung branded tags

Lol. Use one of the huge amount of NFC tags available. Samsung overprices their tags and DID NOT make this feature.

You can do all of that today... And don't even need to program an NFC tag, you can use read-only ones if you already have them. However, a ten pack of NFC tags from tagstand is only about $15 shipped.

you can do all that and more. The combination of NFC Task Launcher and Tasker is incredibly powerful.
Now if you want to also control your TV and media players, look at the Unified Remote app which now supports NFC too.

[Q] Customized View on Standard Dock?

Hello,
I recently purchased the Moto Standard Dock for the Xoom and I can't seem to get the advertised "Customized View" feature to work.
I assume it means that you can set the Xoom to start an application and possibly set other settings but whenever I plug it into the dock it just turns the screen on.
Is anyone else having this issue?
Any ideas how to set these settings?
Cam
I'm in the same boat as you are Cam if I find anything I will let you know.
Matt
Thanks Matt,
I have been reading around the Motorola forums and it seems it may be a feature that has "Not been implemented" YET, I hope. I'll keep looking and post if I find any more details.
Cam
Awesome thanks Cam hopefully they release it soon because I keep seeing it on my TV stand saying damn that would be cool with some photos rolling on it.
Matt
I agree, I'm in the process of designing a car dock based around the standard dock and want it to load the car deck program when it's connected...
Let me know how that goes because it it turns out good I might have some business for you.

I want to put a mount in the console compartment on top of the radio of my Kia Soul. Should be straight forward but I haven't taken the time to look into it the thoroughly. I don't like the mounts for the middle console since they require you to take your eyes off the road completely.

Oh bummer I wish I could afford a BMW but not so much lol but good luck with your project.
I have had a support ticket into Motorola for weeks on this. They have called me twice and sent enumerable emails. I suspect that the answer is that this was advertised as a feature of the dock but was never implemented. They now have the ticket up to level 3 support. I believe that their answer will be to remove the "Remembers your settings..." and "Set default view..." from the Motorola Xoom Experience Accessories ad. I noticed that the box that the dock came in makes no mention of these features. It would be an easy app to add.
My solution is to set up a "Docked" profile in Locale (from the market). Locale costs $10 but is highly configurable. You can download a plug-in that senses the dock. I use Locale to change brightness, volume, bt, wifi, etc. depending upon if the Xoom is in the dock, or based upon the time of day (quiet at night).

[Q] Qi Wireless Charger + Car cradle with Pioneer Reciever

Hey everyone,
First time post but I have a question I think others might be interested in as well. I'd like to create a simple method of charging my phone wirelessly in my vehicle but I have a few questions before I make a couple purchases.
1.)Will the LG WCP-300 charge through a galaxy s4 otterbox defender case?
2.) Will the Samsung Wireless Charging Back Cover be able to work with my galaxy s4 otterbox defender case (perhaps with a little pressure applied)? I've seen a post online where a user was able to get it to work. Anybody on XDA try it out?
3.)If I stuck a NFC tag on the LG WCP-300, will wireless charging still work fine? Will NFC work fine?
4.) Will the LG WCP-300 charge my phone if I have it plugged into the Pioneer DEH-X6500BT USB port? I know it may not charge quickly, but what I'm leaning towards is having GPS, bluetooth, NFC and music streaming from spotify while having the battery charge at least not decrease, or have it decrease slower.
5.) Will the NFC tag work through my galaxy s4 otterbox defender case and Samsung Wirless Charging Back Cover?
I've heard of the OwlPad, but the reason I don't want to use that particular setup is because I'm trying to cut down on the amount of cables running in my car (the reason I'm going wireless, and I've got a radar detector already hooked up and don't want to use a cigarette lighter socket adapter to run two gadgets). I know a cigarette lighter socket adapter might be able to charge it quicker, but if the USB port can provide enough power to at least keep the battery from draining while running GPS, bluetooth, NFC and music streaming from spotify, then I prefer that route. I'd also like to stick to the products mentioned since I'm kinda trying to avoid third party products.
Thank's in advance, and looking forward to hear back.
Thought I would add my findings encase anybody else has similar ideas they want to undertake!
1.) I can confirm the LG WCP-300 charges through the Otterbox defender case for my Galaxy S4.
2.)The samsung wireless charging back cover (by samsung for the galaxy s4, no third party) does indeed fit with the otterbox defender case for the galaxy s4. It fit it 100% okay, but you will feel a bit more weight and notice a difference. It feels like more girth, although it locks into place and has not came apart. I will warn that it is a snug fit, so if it doesn't work for you the first time, keep at it. It doesn't bulge, but you just gotta see it to know what im talking about, I'd say give it a shot. I found a half off accessory code online and bought it directly from samsung.
3.) have not tried a NFC chip on the wireless charger yet.
4.)The LG WCP-300 does work with the pioneer USB port. But be warned!! I thought the USB port wasn't going to work (10 foot cable is recommended if you want to run the cable and try hiding it, that's what I did), because the wireless pad didn't work on my first attempt. Gave up, brought it inside to use. The USB cable inside didn't work. I had tested it before, and it did work. Odd.... Turns out, a good amount of the USB cables have to much plastic near the micro USB head which prevent the cable from going into the wireless charger all the way. Shaved some of the plastic on the cable in my car and.....got it to work. Wireless charging working in the vehicle via USB port.
5.)NFC does work through the case. Tried it with a Nexus 7 tablet and communications worked as long as it sat at the sweet spot (which I'm sure is fairly standard).
The next step for me is fallowing the guide to root the phone (thanks XDA community!!) and then fallow a different users guide on xda (Sorry, I'd post links and directly link but I haven't reached the post limit to do so quite yet) to allow unlock the phone via NFC while the phone is locked and the screen is off.
NFC running 24/7-->Place on Wireless charger with NFC chip-->Unlocks phone, sets it to not turn the screen off, turns off wifi, turns on bluetooth and connects to receiver, and starts spotify. Remove phone from NFC and all settings revert back.
Will post back (or create new post?) when it's all accomplished, maybe a video if people are interested??
I'm interested in pictures, sounds like a neat idea.

The NFC will only read the chip so long as to enable the mode. It does not act as a proximity sensor and will not "revert" back to it's normal operation. Keeping an NFC chip in range the phone will ignore it after it first reads it. You will either need NFC Tasker or some other app to make it a "switching" tag where you can lift your phone off, tap it again to return to normal mode and then go on your way, or another tag stuck somewhere else to trigger going back to normal, maybe perhaps on the car keys?
Yes the post that talks about unlocking the phone has tasker involved with reverting the settings back. On another post it mentions unlocking the phone by keeping NFC on 24/7. The app I'm looking at is NFC Unlocking by MohammadAG, and work also done by Madfish73.

I should also mention that I'm trying to follow the directions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306247) to add home-screen rotation, but as they mention cyanogenmod, I'm not sure if this will work with the stock touchwiz on the galaxy s4....any thoughts?
Ultimate rotation control worked great for my galaxy s1, but the s4 is a little buggy. Nova launcher works great for the homescreen rotation, but the lockscreen rotation is absent in nova launcher. Looking to have both rotate.

NFC unlock works perfectly fine. I don't think you understood what I was saying, the NFC system triggers once per touch to the tag, and that's it. You can leave NFC on 24/7, all it will do is waste just a tiny bit of battery each hour throughout the day. When you touch the tag (on your wireless charger in this case), it will trigger once to unlock and do all the things you want it to do, but when you remove the phone, it will do NOTHING. NFC does not care when the tag has been removed from it's field, just the initial connection to exchange data, that's it. NFC is a fire-and-forget-it system, it does not track anything other than the initial touch. It will not work to pull the phone away and "viola, locked and normal again," it just doesn't work that way, you'll either need NFC Tasker or some other app to create a switching tag (so you tap it again to 'switch' back to normal), OR configure another tag say on your keys to lock the phone and return it to normal.

Did the second link I provided above not run special actions when NFC is removed (I think you're thinking of a different method...)? I fallowed the link from a site, Google "Lifehacker Run an Action When You Remove Your Phone from an NFC Tag" and it should show what I'm talking about. Yes, I am FULLY aware when you remove your phone from a NFC tag, it doesn't run a task because the tag is braindead, and only does what it's programmed too. Hence, you need your phone to say "Hey, I was removed from my NFC tag, let me run another special command!" via special applications that would signal the phone to do so. The reason I want NFC running 24/7 (even while the phone is locked, normally it has to be unlocked to accept a NFC command) is because its convenient not to unlock my phone to run said task (I belive the Moto X has a similar feature with the Motorola Skip). I know i could double tap the NFC tag to revert settings back (via, again, a app), but its not as seamless as just removing it and going on my merry way.
I'm just trying to ace this in one go around, but seeing as phase 1 of my ongoing saga is accomplished in this post, I think I'll create a new post so the title can attract some more help. Thanks guys! And Exel i will do one better and post a video. I'll try to remember to send it over to demonstrate my methods, but only once I'm satisfied with the results :good: .

Second link on review appears to have some solid tools and tweaks to accomplish this goal successfully. I look forward to seeing the results, I know one friend that would probably go for this in a heartbeat.
Try Llama. Not the easiest UI to get on with, but very powerful and free.
You could use a llama variable and 'removed from wireless charger' condition to know that it was removed from the NFC: 1) when NFC tag comes on, set a llama variable. 2) when removed from charger and llama variable is set, do whatever you need (including reverting the variable). If that's the only wireless charger you use, then you don't even need to use any llama variable.
Among other things, I use Llama to deactivate pattern lock when connected to home wifi, and activating it when disconnected from home wifi after a certain delay. This could be done with many apps of course (Tasker, AutomateIt, etc).

NFC Tags?

I'm thinking about picking up a few NFC tags to setup around my dorm. From the little amount of research I've done, I believe NTAG203 NFC tags are the more current standard that is compatible with newer phones, including ours, and that 1K tags are an older type that may/may not work with the Moto X.
Is anyone using NFC tags already with our phone? Does anyone have any comments on how NFC might affect battery life?
These tags are the ones I would most likely buy: http://www.amazon.com/NFC-tags-Writ...y-Back/dp/B00CE3IC74/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
My NFC is on all the time. I have tags in my car, at home, at work and on my key ring. I do not notice any battery drain.
I bought these ones off of ebay.
"10pcs NXP NTAG203 NFC Stickers w/ RF Shielding, for NFC phones, Nexus 4/7/10" (XDA will not let me post the link to the Ebay since I am a new member)
They were $9.99 + $0.79 shipping.
These ones work on metal surfaces. Pay attention to the ones you buy if you are going to stick them on anything metal. The standard NFC tags do not work on metal surfaces.
I went for the Moto skip, since I figured what the heck. It comes with 3 NFC stickers and a colored NFC tag (colored of your choice, of course) that attaches to clothing with serious magnets. Pretty cool - going to try it out tomorrow but it's cool unlocking it without using a power button.
I love my NFC tags. I've had my moto less than a week so I'm not sure about battery life. lm using : NFC tags - NTAG203 Chip - 10 Pack (amazon)
Sent from my XT1058 using xda app-developers app
Any Type 1 or Type 2 "universally compatible" tags will work with the Moto X. NTAG203 Tags are the most affordable of those, but only have 137 bytes of usable memory. This is plenty for most task launching applications, but for some things like creating a full vCard (electronic business card) with all your info you might need more memory. Topaz 512 Tags have almost 450 bytes of usable memory and are also fully compatible with all NFC Devices including the Moto X.
Of course we have NTAG203 and Topaz 512 Tags/Stickers at AndyTags.com as well as NTAG203 Key Chains, but many other stores have them as well.
NFC uses VERY little power and has almost no affect on battery at all.
How many instructions can one 137 byte NFC tag hold at once? e.g. turn off WiFi, turn ringer to full volume and send a text message. Is that capable?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I got some NTAG203 tags from ebay and some from the tagstand.com.. and they were fine for like 3-5+instructions. But with tasker (or llama i think) you can just up a profile or set of tasks and associate it with the name of the tag. So the tag only has to store a name and when its read it can set off an unlimited amount of tasks.
Honestly though I don't really use nfc tags, they were just a cool thing to try but not really that useful for me on a daily basis. I accomplish most stuff depending on my time and location, and the wifi network i'm connected to.

Review of ESCAM Pearl QF100 IP wireless camera w/lots of pics!!!

removed.
Very nice review, my friend. I've been looking around for a good security camera for the home that is wireless. This one seems to have an AC output needed for power and by the looks of it doesn't seem like it would be weatherproof. Do you know if it can be mounted outside? Thanks .
Thank you for the review.
I've been thinking of getting 2~3 IP camera's when I move to my own house (hopefully soon). These look good for the price.
Do you have any idea if these work with Synology Surveillance Station? I'd like to manage the cams on my Synology NAS, and keep the recordings stored on it. Unfortunately, the brand is not on Synology's Camera Support List.
Do you happen to own a Synology and want to test Surveillance Station? Many thanks in advance!
I'm pretty sure they will not work with that system. As a matter of fact, I got confirmation that other outdoor camera from the same ESCAM company will not integrate with that app, but they are working on updated version, to be released soon.
That Synology sounds a bit too complicated, surveillance for professional use/monitoring. Sorry, don't have or use anything like that. I was very impressed with a simplicity of the camera above and will wait for their outdoor version to add to a few outside monitoring points (just to catch neighbors walking their dogs on our lawn lol!!!). For home, I just need it to monitor my kids and when we are away on vacation.

Hi, don't you know, that this Escam Pearl camera has motion detection, which sends pictures to FTP/e-mail? I can't see it in specs..

There is a microSDHC card reader to store recordings locally, and you can store them on your Windows pc as well? Is there any option to save the recordings on a network share (e.g. on a NAS) (without a computer running)?

No, unfortunately it either records directly to microSD or when you click manually from a phone/tablet or PC where it gets stored locally. Maybe you need something more advance for what you are looking for. Maybe something like Dropcam, though it cost $200 per indoor cam and $99 annually to have cloud recording (I think 1 week stored interval only, for more you need to pay a lot more). This ESCAM solution is really for a budget oriented surveillance. They just need to add outdoor camera support to their app, and it will be pretty good. For NAS storage, it probably needs some extra security options enabled or something (sorry, have no idea about this stuff, so just guessing).
vectron said:
Unfortunately, it's not weatherproof. This is for indoor use or if you mount it by the window looking outside for outdoor surveillance. I see DX has a lot of other ESCAM cameras for outdoor use: http://www.dx.com/s/escam - I will request to get some for review, and will ask which one they can suggest to me that integrates with their current app. That would be an ultimate solution to have a split screen with multiple views of indoor and outdoor monitoring points. Btw, it supports more than 4 views, since i see Windows app with 16 views. DX, also has a dedicated page for this QF100 camera now : http://c.dx.com/collection/201408/e..._medium=homerotate&utm_campaign=20140812escam
I actually think this wireless outdoor ESCAM version will work great with it: http://www.dx.com/p/escam-q6320wifi...w-24-ir-led-white-eu-plug-318846#.U-zR12O5Q08 - I will try to get a review sample to see how it integrates with QF100 and common app control.
I do have and reviewed DropCam as well. It's a nice camera which I use often when my kids are in the basement playing. But it's limited to a fixed wide angle and after awhile it overheats because it's such a tight design with hardly any airflow (also for internal use only). The biggest problem - you have to pay monthly fee to get video access, beside $200 price tag.
But honestly, this QF100 camera is very good for $56 and has a lot of features. Definitely recommend it!

Thanks for the reply, buddy. I def agree with you. This is a great budget camera and I honestly don't feel that DropCam is worth it at all. I'm not a big fan of annual fees with limitations on storage capacity. A camera system should be straight forward and simple for you to have complete access to because it is YOURS. I really hope a perfect outdoor system comes. Let me know how it turns out when you get that review sample .

I got confirmation that outdoor camera they have right now will not integrate with their app. They are working on a new version of outdoor camera (I just assume the same guts as QF100 inside of their current outdoor camera enclosure), and I will update my review as soon as I get a sample!
Btw, Anker is working on their own version of "dropcam" ip camera, without monthly paid subscription but for indoor only. Will be interesting to see what they come up with (I was selected for beta testing, so perhaps will have my impressions in a few weeks).

Sounds good. Keep us posted. Sorry for the late replies, been pretty busy .
Hi,
I've just received that cam from DealExtreme.
Good Quality, all perfect on WiFi but, have you tested the factory DDNS to access from an outside network?

Hi
I'm wanting to get some of these cams from DealExtreme and mount them externally, but how to do cable them with the huge LAN/Power connector on the end?

Absolutely! Nothing needs to be configured, everything works by default. The day I had this camera setup and tested at home on my wifi, I was checking it remotely, later when over at friends house.

These cameras designed for internal (inside of the house) use only. Their housing is not designed for outside use, but the company is working on a new outside version that will work with the same control app. No need to use LAN cable since it's wireless. With power connector, unfortunately, no way around it. Need to bring out the wires. Btw, that is a common power tip on the connector and you can get usb cables with an adapter for that connector. So in theory you can power up multiple cameras from usb ac wall charger, like those 5 port ones from anker or bolse.

Hi Vectron,
I've tried it, typing on an outside network the dns URL http://XXXXXX.ipcam.so but I get this message:
Account [XXXXX] is offline.
What do I have to config to make it work?

None of them integrate with the same app used by QF100. It's not just about the camera. You want to have different cameras connecting to one app so you can monitor everything at once, rather than use different apps for different cameras ESCAM is working on a new outdoor version that will work with their existing app.

Sorry, I only use an app from my phone, and it works on wifi and 4G LTE. I'm not accessing it from the laptop/web browser.
Is there a good alternative for Synology Surveillance Station that works with the QF100?
The phone app doesn't work on 4g. Status is connection and nothing happens...
Has anyone got this to work other than reviewer?
I largely purchased this camera based on the review here...What a disappointment, either everyone is receiving a different version or the reviewer is making false claims... The camera does NOT work outside of the local LAN! This makes it useless. DDNS does not work. I'm computer savvy have a few other IP cameras and this model is not accessible outside the LAN even if you open all ports on the router. Support requests unanswered... the app is garbage, this camera does not work with other Android apps either, a wasted $60...

Let's come up with idea's for awesome modules!

Well, my hope is to stir up enough interest in the kinds of modules that we think would be awesome for this phone. I mean it's awesome that we can easily repair this phone because of its "modularity" but I know I definitely was bought over on the idea of a adding different functionality to my phone; maybe specific to a certain kind of line of work or something simple like a special kind of case added functionality. LG actually has a contest going on like this but only open to native South Koreans. I don't understand why it isn't worldwide? Are we going to have to start a kick-starter?

I was thinking maybe an extended battery case with solar panel, think true wireless charging! Or a gamepad module!

The new modular moto is said to have a projector as one of it's modules. I was thinking a thermal/night vision cam could be cool.
i'd take the hi-fi module lol, had I known I needed the international version to even use it I wouldn't have bought it through tmo
a joypad module
a real GameBoy on our LG G5 !!!!!!
Auto root and bootloader unlock module for all variants.
There are so many features that the aftermarket could offer for a variety of different lifestyles, I don't even know where to start!!
I second the joy pad.
Also, I think a legit flashlight with dedicated switch would be pretty cool/handy.
Maybe a high quality microphone for sampling and on the fly recording for musicians.
A flip out, clamshell style physical keyboard for the texting junkies.
A simple module with a microUSB port for those with many microUSB devices that want to consolidate charging platforms.
A big fat battery that doubles as a power bank.
A serious WiFi module for hard core tethering.
A two way radio with accompanying app for those who travel off the grid.
RFID reader.
Multi card reader.
The possibilities are nearly limitless, if the phone is popular enough and the LG continues to offer the platform in future devices (or even licenses it out to other phone manufacturers if it catches on) who knows what awesome new features it could provide!!

I'd take a front firing speaker and hardware buttons (with front fingerprint reader for when on desks) with just a little 200 mah battery built in to bring us to 3000 . Simple but would be epic
