Porting roms - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to know if any dev is interested in porting the desire c Rom to our g2. It is quite evident that roms ported from phones with similar HW specs work just fine. A few devs have ported the one v's rom which still has a few problems. Looking at the desire c it has an underclocked cpu @ 600mhz and andreno 200, so a good port will make it smooth for the g2 to handle
So lets say this will be a small place to share ideas on how to make this possible, am not a noob and also not an master at this. So i want to know how to start doing this any help??? Time to set full sense 4.0 not 4.0a

[Q] Sense 2.1

Currently I using a stock rom Froyo 2.2 came with earlier sense, I do have read a review for "wildfire S" it's comming with sense 2.1.
I think for CPU are same as 600MHZ,
- is that possible to upgrade to sense 2.1 ?
- or any custom rom with sense 2.1 ?
Nope.
Both these phones are not that similar as their name suggests. They are completely different. CPU is not just the same . The chipset is different along with gpu support and increase in MHz. And screen resolution is improved to HVGA on wildfire S.
Wildfire S is a lot upgraded version of wildfire.
Newer sense is not possible on wildfire. I don't know what the Wildfire S sense is...

Porting it is proving to be tough. You can see the progress so far (and give it a try also, if you wish) here:

HTC Pico port? Sense 3.5 trimmed for 512mb ram.

Hey guys, is it possible to get a port of the HTC Pico's Sense 3.5 rom to the Dezire Z/G2? It apparently doesn't have the 3D screen transition of the current sense 3.0/3.5 roms but other than that it's sense 3.5 on gingerbread 2.3.5. I think this would be nice to see.

Port is unlikely, we had a look at it the other week. The pico is 320x480 which would mean upscaling to fit our devices screen. I doubt that anyone will want to do this.

Oh, I was under the impression that it would scale itself like the other 3.5 roms. Damn. Oh well.

The other sense 3.5 roms so far have been wvga so the have fitted with no issues. How ever virtuous unity did have to be downscaled for all devices. But the general consensus is that upscaling a rom would not look good.

i tried porting it, it dosent even boot, it get's stuck very early in the boot procces, overall not worth it.
I got it booting, but like CJ said, the scaling would be a huge issue. The screen was the size of a postage stamp

[Q] What will ICS add to our device?

Hi friends,
I wonder what we will get with ICS. I think it will let us to have much more free ram at startup. Maybe smoother than virtuous affinity... So more what? I've read it would be more useful than sense based roms. I really can't wait to have an ICS rom which is really smooth; but i don't know why and for what i wait
Why would it give us more free RAM ? Surely it will be less, e.g. hardware acceleration uses more RAM.

in my opinion, base android roms (no sense) don't use much ram. somebody said we will not need sense with ICS. So it won't use much ram. as i said, these are my opinions... BTW doesn't sense based roms have hardware acceleration? is there any ram usage difference between gingerbread and ICS roms?
ICS is the newest operating system for android, which is definately alot to look forward to (eg. gingerbread made froyo absolete). But you're comparing it to a sense rom, which is a completely different thing. I think the best way for you to learn what you want to know is to google it.
yes but icsi with sense is impossible in G2 because have poor ram for this dual
I have found this page http://chromloop.com/2011/11/ice-cream-sandwich-first-boot-on-motorola-defy-aosp/
It says ics uses about the same ram with gingerbread. So it should be possible to have ics rom with sense. But i don't think that i need it, i only want ics based cyanogen 9. Thus it will be fast i though. Am i wrong?

Well you can play around with the ICS port that's still in the works. You'll get a general idea of new things to come. I can't wait till we have a nice, fully functional rom. Don't think I'd even want anything from sense after that
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium
i've been playing with the ics port rom ever since the alpha version. so far it's the greatest. can't imagine (wait) what it will feel after a stable release
Have they implemented Hardware accelerated UI in the Desire S port?
It seems rather slow.
Of course it's in beta, so it's all cool and I don't expect a port to perform well in the long run either way. But I'm just curious since "3D acceleration" is kinda vague. Is it only for game apps and some fancy effects?
As far as I know hardware acceleration is fully working on the desire s port. I'm pretty sure, that most performance issues are simply due to the fact that it is a beta port of ics from another device.
Once we have a fully working aosp build or cm9, performance should be as good as expected.
I think you can get a good impression of ics without hw acceleration by trying out v 0.1 from andromadus, which redefines slow.
Ah I see. Thanks.

New ics rom with sense 3.6

If this developer pulls this rom off our desires will be up there with the big guns....still!
Looks like that thread got deleted from the dev section
Why would you want sense with ICS?
I used to love sense as it was an improvement over froyo and gingerbread apart from being ugly they were lacking some functions which sense added.
ICS even in its various beta incarnations is better than any of the sense roms (in my opinion) that I have tried.

Sense or no sense, will be brilliant when that finally crack it!

Was wondering if that thread was fake or some thing though as its been deleted
I also don't like Sense, but the announced today entry-level HTC One V has almost identical parameters as our old desire and will be running ICS 4.0.3 + Sense 3.6.
Probably the port would be possible after applying the proper kernel modules for QSD8250.
The other phones from the HTC One series will run Sense 4.0, which I doubt will run smoothly on the old Desire's hardware.

Is it not more like the Desire S? 4GB ROM instead of 512MB - but I bet the CPU/Graphics etc. are far different than we have now
I think ICS looks much better without any HTC Sense.
The internal storage is already a resolved issue using a good SD card.
About the CPU/Graphics I believe it will be the 2nd generation Snapdragon + Adreno 205 combination, which is not a lot different.
It's perfect option to sell the last of them. Same as they do with the Legend and Wildfire 2 years ago.
Don't forget also that we got 64 Mb more RAM and probably most of us better IMHO AMOLED display

well, on paper this statement shouldn't be entirely correct. htc got rid of the 3d widgets when you scroll between home screens in sense 4.0 but kept the 3-dimensional workspace, so that should give us some plenty of more performance. if you had a sense 3.0/3.5 rom and had disabled the 3d widgets you'd see the BIG improvement in performance i am talking about...and in my opinion that's because of the comaparitively weak adreno 200 performance compared to the new phone gpus...
i think MIUI interfase most better then any sense
No sense please
When the Desire came out, Sense had a lot of cool functions that left stocking in the dust. Cool widgets, good dialer, good alarm and good integration with fb/twitter. Now all of these things are in stock ICS or available through lightweight apps from the market. Once you have tried the speed of stock builds, I just don't see how you could ever go back to sense.

Disagree ICS without sense appears a little bland I think.
I like ICS simplified interface. Tired of Sense's gimmicks. I think that I never install Sense rom again, even if it will be miraculously released official update.

If you compare Sense with plain ICS in a Sense thread, you should allow to compare it to MIUI too. I like the look of MIUI too (especially the new v4)!

Paul O'Brien is going to get a HTC One X, too. Unfortunately, Cotulla - the HD2 god developer - plans to stick with HD2 and WP7.
mike1986 confirmed on twitter his ROMs will come to One X
hamdir, are you a Dev? From what I read on One's mega thread it seems you made a very important tweak on Sense.
If I get the One X, expect ROMs from me
Got experience in kernel development + got a team behind me that knows the thing pretty well
I'm planning to create some tweaking apps too !
And not related to One X but some games are on their way for the droid

i made ultra/super smooth rosie hack, that disabled the 3d widget effect, froze pages during scroll, which ran Rosie (Sense launcher) at locked 60fps for snapdragon 2 and above the idea was adopted in sense 4
my thread has various versions of sense 3.0, 3.5 and 3.6 patched for many devices also has the guide to apply the patch
but no im no dev, i'm more like a modder, obsessed with smoothness i usually provide mods for the ROM i'm using
i also wrote many guides, like DHD camera guide and supercharger guide
so yea i can be useful
I want Dougi and Shnizlon as best 2 themers on Sensation
Seo from DHD scene and Baad from Sensation as devs
hmm just had an idea for an xda developer top trumps game
I'd love to see an AOSP ROM and try that out, though I'm a fan of sense and really like what I've heard about Sense 4.0... I'd therefore also like a nice simple Sense 4.0 ROM which just improves performance maybe strips it back even more to the bare essentials.
Do I also remember reading about being able to duel boot Android phones now? that would be cool if we could do that....
However at the moment I plan on running stock until things settle down.
mike1986 gives us the first
