Using other headset than Sony'? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If plugin a Samsung headset, for example, the phone will reject it, can't even listen music with it! Is there a way to remove that restriction and use any headset?

Unless you change the hardware, no. Use a converter (or whatever that is)

jhonyrod posted this in another similar thread:
SonyEricsson phones use a (jack) standard called OMTP (also does Nokia), while Sony phones (Xperia P, S, U, etc), Apple and almost every other company uses CTIA.
This obviously means that the headphones won't work, but...
The only difference between those two are the connection layout:
CTIA:
T-Left Audio
R1-Right Audio
R2-Ground
S-Mic
OMTP:
T-Audio Left
R1-Audio Right
R2-Mic
S-Ground
So to make them work you can buy or make an adapter that swaps R2 and S, or one that short-circuits both; the first kind will let you use the mic, volume control etc, while the other kind (a simple extension would do) won't.
Now, if you don't want to use ANY kind of adapter, not even a simple extension there's a way you can make them work:
It is supposed that once you push the central button on a headset (OMTP or CTIA, doesn't matter) what it internally does is short circuit R2 and S, so, if you manage to hold all the time the central button on your beats they should work, nevertheless the mic and so won't work either as their data goes through the S ring.

[Q] how to change fm station using any other earphone

hey friends i bought htc desire hd yesterday..........earlier i was using sony xperia x10........i was using philips earphone with that......but when i try to use that with htc desire hd in fm application than i found that i am not able to change fm station using earphone....as it got single button in that which is used for call pick up and put down......and for song changing in power amp app.......can u people guide me any way so that i can change fm station with that same single key in the earphone........
You can't. There is no way to program what the button on the headphones does.
Sent using witchcraft via XDA Developers Premium App.
Just use your standard htc headphones and it'll work.

Headphone buttons

Does anyone know how to get the headphone buttons to work?
A long press activates vlingo.
they will not pause pandora, mixzing, or the stock music app.
I can't get headphone buttons on beats studios to work either. Like on iPod I know like dbl press skips track etc.. But no go on this out my og epic. I think my HTC hero long tinge ago did work though. It may be the headphone jack doesn't have the proper stuffs for that functionality.
I have a pair of LG stereo Bluetooth headphones that have pause play fwd rew buttons and all those work perfectly.

Sadly iOS and Android devices use different wiring layouts for inline remotes than each other, so I've never found one designed for iOS work fully on any Android phone that I've had. Only way I can think of to fix it would be if someone made an app to intercept the remote signals and correct them, kind of like a programmable TV remote.

Or an adapter that switched the wiring around appropriately within itself.
I'm not sure compatibility is an issue here. I had no problems with using my iphone headphones on my nexus one.
Maybe it's a samsung program issue. I noticed that by deactivating vlingo, I got pause functionality back.

Bluetooth only for calls?

So I got my hands on the xbox 360 bt headset and wanted to use it with the built in voice search app. However I can't find a way to make it work with voice search reliably.
With or without headphones plugged in
In or out of the car dock
Rebooted phone
Played with bt toggle
Basically it only. Works with youtube spotify and maybe phone calls. However it did work when I first paired it with my phone.
Just audio play back
Alien build 4

Detail bump
Had a chance to use my phone in an extended phone call and confirmed the bt microphone can be used during calls.
Trying to develop a test to prove the mic isn't working in a car dock or for voice search and will post again with method and results.
-right now I'm thinking rubber band and dense cloth or maybe some non conductive gelatin used for cleaning keyboards.

New details bump.
The microphone suppression tests failed to stress the microphone so now my only proof the microphone doesn't work in my car is the difference in performance when it does and does not

have you tried toggling the device settings in bluetooth settings? tap & hold device till option window pops up and selecting phone/media? there can also be a conflict if there is another bluetooth device connected using the same selection.
There is no secondary bluetooth device and the settings toggle had little to no effect

I noticed the same thing. I recently started using a Bluetooth again and it amazed me that it didn't work. Unfortunately, I lost my good headset (the one that used to work) so I can't test it. I can confirm however, that Bluetooth did work for all audio and voice functions on the stock ROM and some of the deblur ROMs from the 2.2 days.

Flashed ics, now headset no longer works.

Title says it all. Before flashing, headset worked, with the exception of the volume controls, now nothing... Just a warning. Btw I now have 2 Sony branded headsets that do not work with this phone. Why can't there be one standard???

Works fine for me. Sure your headphones arent dead? Backup and reflash is always an option as well
I'm having the same problem. I have Klipsch X10i headphones which have iPhone controls. When I plugged them in with GB it would say some functions of the headset were not available but they worked, just not the buttons of course. Now when I plug them in nothing happens. The phone pretends there's nothing connected. The Xperia S was also known to do this with iPhone headphones.
Yeah, this was the same for me. My old headset was for my Sony X10, never worked on Ion. New headset is Sony brand (for iPhone) worked (without button control) until I flashed ics.

One way to get around this is to use a headphone extension cable. It's annoying, but it works. I'm pretty sure if you put tape around the data band it would have the same effect, but I'm worried about it falling off inside the phone and breaking the port. I suppose yet another solution would be to get the MW600 Bluetooth adapter and run them that way.
Thanks, but I just went ahead and got a new set. Skullcandy, they work fine.

keep pressing the vol up/down on the headset while plug it into the phone, then it will work fine.

Hahaha I can't believe this worked! I just hold down volume up while plugging it in and it works! As a bonus the play/pause button works, and double tapping it works for skipping tracks. Haha, nice hack.

Any thoughts on a nexus one headset not working after flashing ics? It worked with gingerbread (well the controls didn't, but I did get sound out of them). With ics it doesn't even act like I plugged anything in. The headset doesn't have any volume controls, and the skip track buttons do nothing.
I've tested the headset on another phone and they still work. I've also reflashed ics to see if that would help (well help this and a random rebooting issue I've been having).

I used another set of headphones, and they worked. It's not a headset like the ones I'm trying to use, just plain headphones. LiveWare sees the headphones just fine and sound comes out of them. The headset however does nothing. LiveWare doesn't even see them. As stated before, the headset works just fine with other phones so I'm kind of at a loss as to what exactly to do about it.
It seems that the headset has to have volume controls to actually be seen by the phone for some reason. Just tried my fiancee's iPhone headset and it worked as long as I was holding one of the volume controls while plugging it in. Kind of disappointing, but maybe once we have an unlocked bootloader and custom ROMs I will be able to use my Nexus One headset :crying:

Sony Smart Bluetooth Headset SBH50 Review

Hey guys hows it going?
I just purchased one of the new smart bluetooth headsets from Sony which is the SBH50 model and I received it yesterday. Been using it for a day now. Just here to give you a review.
Now first I wasnt sure if it would work the way I assumed originally or if any of the features were compatible with the Xperia S. But bought it anyway as I mainly need it for calls.
As soon as I took it out of the box I immediately touched the headset to the back of my phone and boom. It was connected immediately. Received a notification to download the companion app. Downloaded and thats it. I was soon enough set up ready to go. So simple.
Sound quality is awesome for calls and music. Even the FM radio. The signal for the radio is also good. Unlike on the mw600 where the radio would cut out because the signal was weak.
When you receive a phone call the number pops up on screen with the name, compared to mw600 would be just the number. The notification for text to speech I still havent tested properly however so far seems to be working. I also havent checked the messaging notifications yet however I have seen the email and gmail notifications.pop up on screen.
The multipoint feature is excellent. You can select one device as a primary device and still receive notifcations from both devices and listen to music from the other.
The battery life is also amazing. Switched it on at 7 am and its still on id say about 75%. Most of thr battery has been consumed by me listening to the fm radio this morning.
Oh and there is an option to view your call log on the device too which is quite nice, especially if you want to ring back a number in the call list.
Build quality is very good I found. Feels slightly plasticy but good quality. Not the cheap plastic feel.
Theres a lot more which can be covered and I will add to this review the more I get to know the device and its features.

Got mine as well few days ago. Lost mw600. Not sure what Sony is thinking with 'smart' range as it regresses, since any bluetooth ever, had double click to redial and long press to voice dial. These, including mw1 are missing those functions. Also in comparison with mw600 now we need app to display contacts (sure not it shows names as well), but permanent ongoing notification in status bar and notifications kills this softaware for me.
As long as it does not allow me to change button options and setup, this smart bluetooth is not gonna be 'simply smart' for the foreseeable future. Opening api for Devs might help.
Also don't understand why bluetooth with basically same features, sans NFC, as mw600, is 30 percent larger in volume, while offering same talk/music times as it.
Rant over!
Basically, only reason I'm keeping it is because of possibility of firmware updates (if mw600 had this it wouldn't be obsolete yet and would buy again. Than again that company does not exist anymore) , making it somewhat future proof. This only applies if Sony keeps their end of the bargain.

I got one of these in the mail this week for my Xperia Z.
I was after a bluetooth unit with a 3.5mm output so i could hook it up to my Logitech Z2300 and control the music from my phone. Works well, only the bluetooth range is up to approx 15m line of sight. It'll do for my home entertaining.
I havent tried yet, but if i can connect my pc to it via BT as well i can play the songs off there too.
I dont really see the need for NFC since pairing with BT is simple enough.
Firmware can be updated on it via SUS.
The instruction manual included doesnt have any operating instructions. Im not 100% sure what the icons in the menu means.
Its very light if youre gonna clip it to your clothing, but to handle it is a little tricky cos it is too light.
Ive seen the Pro version of this, with usb on the end of it, so it can be used as standalone mp3 player. Wish i had seen that earlier.

Well, I am somewhat happy with the SBH50 - I only had the MW600 for a short while before sending it back because of the volume controls.
However, it's terrible that you cannot launch voice dial with the big button (what does it anyway?) and the music controls will launch the standard music app if you hadn't launched a different one on the phone before...
I'm praying that this will become better.
My first one after a few weeks died. Wouldn't switch on at all thankfully Amazon replaced it for me.

I'm just looking for a replacement for my MW600 (first one got lost, second one got the clip broken and the last one all of a sudden died for no obvious reason ).

Just to get this right- once you've started another app the buttons will control the playback of this particular app or start the default player instead?? (Which would be horrible since I'm exclusively using Spotify)
And something else which got me confused after having read too many reviews: Does the display turn off while listening/having calls? (The MW600 did and I would prefer it this way.)
And a last question especially for the previous MW600 users: Is the SBH50 comfortable to wear? From the pictures the clip doesn't really look secure to be attached compared with the old model..

Hi there. Yes the display turns off after a few seconds in a call, listening to music or when you stop pressing the buttons.
The clip is comfortable to wear however you will either need to clip it on to the neckline/collar of any top or anywhere along the zip line. You can't just clip it anywhere.
