Doesn't disabling hw overlays in development options do this or similar?

Idk if it is. I have been waiting for someone to chime in who has more knowledge than me..

this is not necessary. the s3 has enough cpu and gpu horsepower to handle most anything you can throw at it, unline the adreno220 of the original Evo.

Developer options in settings ?

I have seen the option under Settings- Developer options - Force GPU rendering - use 2d hardware acceleration in applications.
Should that option be checked ? What exactly does that do ? Sounds like would make phone snappier/ smoother ? But does it chew up more battery ?

I believe it works in a way that if a dev hasn't added hardware acceleration to their apps yet, it will attempt to do so.. but I could be wrong. I see no ill effects doing this either.
I enabled it, see if it helps ? So far it makes scrolling through XDA posts more fluid smooth. So must be doing something.
I am on ROM Android Revolution HD 2.1.3.

What's force gpu rendering?

I see it in developer options but I don't know what it does
Does it make the phone faster or something?

I don't exactly know, but I always keep it unchecked because it likes to make a lot of apps look wonky or not work. I suppose we'all know soon enough, though.

It forces 2D hardware acceleration in older apps that aren't hardware accelerated. Sometimes it'll make older apps behave weird because they are not built for HW acceleration. I always leave mine checked and haven't had any real issues thus far.

force gpu rendering and battery life

I've read conflicting things about this. Does this option use more battery or does it conserve it?

From my under standing all it does is use more memory. But it does help with performance

So no effect on battery life?
This won't have much affect on almost anything we use due to almost all apps, if not all, already utilize the GPU for rendering so it really won't help us.

If you have the ability depending on your ROM, just disable HW overlays so you utilize the GPU better by only using it for screen compositing.

Force GPU rendering? Yay of nay

Isn't this option on.....stock? Anyone notice any difference either way? Of course I want the smoothest possible.

It doesn't really matter since all new apps use this by default.

Disabling hardware overlays

Hey all! I've read, and from what I've seen disable hardware overlays will always uncheck after a reboot. Whether this is a glitch or by design, has a fix been found??
I did try a build.prop entry/change that supposedly kept it checked...but it hasn't worked.
Anyone know a trick? LOL
Thanks!
