Since Jelly Bean is only out on GN I figured this would be the appropriate place to put this:

I know this has already been discussed in other JB threads and voice actions are somewhat gimmicky but that is really cool. Impressed by the sports and local stuff.

This is only available on jelly bean? It wouldny work for paranoid android rom at all?

Love this new voice stuffs. Killing all my friends on their "fancy" iPhone4S'.
Great video! I have been super impressed with the voice features in JB.

Just got word that Samsung and Google are working together to push out the OTA update to REMOVE this function to get around the apple dispute
http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/galaxy-nexus-not-available-in-play-store.html 3rd paragraph
Mine already isn't working like it used too
If I ask for the weather it does a Google search ... anything I ask or say it does a Google search

I'm not sure if Google Now is what they will remove. Besides, this is only a temporary workaround just to be able to sell phones again. If they can dismiss and prove Apple wrong they will put the feature back and also get about 95 million from Apple which had to put this much in bond to be able to mitigate.
Apple is so scared of competition they will try to do whatever it takes to eliminate it. Since Google Now is light years from that dumb Siri, it really shows how little resources Apple has compared to Google. After all, we all know none of Apple's engineers can think alike... they all "think different"
Probably the quick fix for now to work around the injunction. Hopefully a '#boycotapple=true' flag needing to be set to re-enable.

Lol. Nice.
They are changing the search so for example if I type pulse in the search bar I get a preview of what's available. If I have pulse installed I can launch the app right there. Its a universal search that apple is up on arms about . The OTA will just show online results and not the app installed on the device. This was what was filed in April, there are no lawsuits yet on the Google now features. But you can count on apple finding something that relates to one of their rephrased patents that already exist

The only thing I use unified search for:
1.) Google Searches
2.) Looking up artist/song name to automatically start playing (which could be done in 1-2 extra clicks anyway).
I saw a demo online comparing s voice to google voice search, and of coarse for 95% of the things google won no contest, but I was surprised that s voice could say update twitter and give a message and work, where google could not do this at all yet. Just wondering if they are planning on it being able to do basically everything the other can but better?
You mean Google Now? I believe it comes with every phone/tablet that has JB. If we get JB on the S3 then we will get Google Now, unless they disable it so we become stuck with garbage S Voice.

I think OP is referring to have more control with Google Now like specific app or hardware controls.

Yes this is what I meant. Again if you look online for demos one of them shows that it works well, but still does not have full control or access to all apps and such, it literally gives an error that the feature is not working yet. I can only assume since it gives that actual error that they are planning on it having this ability soon, which makes since.

That feature doesn't appear to be available on any phone just yet, it just brings up a google search.
I dunno, I tried Google now and really didn't find it all that great. I couldn't launch apps or dictate what I want done on the app. s voice has been pretty solid for me.

Judging from the recent i9300 international JB leak, it looks like we will have access to both S-Voice and Google Now. So for those who prefer one over the other, it looks like SGS3 users will be able to use either which is good news. I was hoping that Samsung wouldn't remove Google Now from the JB rom when it comes out and so far looks good
I kinda hope they just put the ability to control apps in Google Now, I would not want to have to swap from one to the other just to ask a question, then swap to the other to launch an app. Might as well just launch it manually if your gonna have to do that each time. S Voice is only better for this one thing, ask it anything that requires it to look on the web for the answer and its slow as hell, Google Now is the best for this now, better than siri, so add in the app control and its the king.
I hope with the official JB release coming out soon we will find out for certain if Google Now will have full app controls like s voice.
S voice six because its developed by vlingo who IMO was the worst assistant app... I have the note with paranoid android 4.1.1 and Google now is awesome..until someone ports it to your device I recommend assistant from the Google play market

Not sure what the deal is. I have tried sending pics, links and mp3s with no luck. I have the settings toggled on... What am I missing? Thanks
Samsung forces you to use their proprietary S-Beam to beam stuff with other devices. These other devices also need S-Beam for it to work. The Nexus 7 isn't a samsung device so it uses the regular Android Beam, which doesn't work with the Galaxy s3.
Supposedly with the Jellybean update, you aren't required to use S-beam and you can still beam files with android-beam if it's disabled. Until then, you have to install CM10 if you want to beam with another non-samsung device.

The GS3 does have Android Beam support.
The problem is ICS Android Beam can't do the things the OP described. You can only send links. And only using the Stock Browser. No pics, no mp3s.
S-Beam and Android Beam 2.0 are not compatible. Android Beam 1.0 was very limited.
Thanks, that sucks so bad. I was trying to showoff to my friends and it was a epic fail, lol.

Blue NFC app worked well between my nexus 7 and s3. Seemed a con though.

Also you sure you tapped at the right area?
The nexus 7s NFC is right around up top ,where the nexus logo is.
There's also this app called instawifi in which you can use NFC devices/cards to transfer WiFi passwords to others by tapping on their device. If you donate to the guy who made it, he'll send you a free NFC card

Works fine on my N7

No problem beaming anything to anybody. I be throwing them high beams all day every day. Low beams when the occasion calls for it...

Always had and have problems also. Now transfers with the note 2 or S3 works flawlessly

Go into your setting and turn off S-Beam then turn on Android bream on your galaxy S3. Thats how i get my two girls to play nice with each other. You can do pics and files just not BIG files.
I have had 0 issues transferring files between my N7 and S3 using NFC. Not sure what your problem could be. My biggest file was approximately 250mb.

I tested this and it works for me I sent a few pics, no mp3 though that was the only thing that did not go. Some times the pics up would have to do like 2-3 times for it to go but that's it.

Observation
What i have observed is... I cn send pics from nexus to s3... But not other way around... Even play window pops up on nexus....
it finally worked
I have just successfully sent a picture from my S3 to my nexus 7. All I had to do is turn off s beam and it works fine. Really don't know why Samsung included s beam. It is pointless.
still fails
Well, this isn't working for me. I'm using a stock nexus 7, not even rooted. My SIII is rooted and running People's ROM 3.10. Turning the phone sideways in relation to the tablet helps as did turning off S-beam on the phone. Prior to doing this, the beam didn't seem to even start.
But what I am seeing now on the tablet are an "incoming beam" message, followed by several downloading indicators (the downward moving arrow) and finally a "beam did not complete" message. These are showing up on the tablet.
I'm trying to move a .jpeg taken on the phone over to the tablet for editing and ultimately posting it to Facebook. I've tried it with a couple of different .jpegs.
Update
I got this to work today. Elsewhere, I read that the NFC chip is actually on the battery, and not in the phone itself or built into the Android opsys. Today, I swapped batteries and it worked beautifully with the spare. So it seems (to me at least) to be related to which of my two batteries I use. Both were bought at the time I bought the phone directly from Sprint during a Black Friday sale, so they should be identical. Apparently one may be defective in this area.

Which Apps Work and Which Ones Don’t?
Apps that work with Android Beam
Here is a list of apps that work with Android Beam followed by any issues they may have.
aCalendar
Any.Do – This task management app lets you beam assignments to co-workers
Chrome
Clover Pay
Contacts (Android 4.0) – This app seems to be a little temperamental. Wait until the screen gets small before you tap it. This takes about four seconds. Then tap near the photo area.
Gmail
Gallery – only works when Android 4.1 is installed
Google Play – Android Beam pushes a link to the app’s details page in Google Play. On the other device, Google Play launches and loads the details page, for easy downloading of the app.
Google Earth
Google I/O 2012
Google Maps
Internet (stock Android 4.0 browser)
Just Player
Local – Maps, but nothing else
MonTransit
Navigation
NFC Reader
Paper Camera
Pattrn
People (Android 4.1)
Shazam
Shazam Encore
Songkick Concerts
StumbleUpon
WiFiBeam – This app can pass WiFi setup info from one device to another
YouTube – Can’t beam ads, skip any ads before beaming.
This is a partial list of the apps which work with Android Beam. As I find more apps that work, I’ll add them here.
Apps that don’t work with Android Beam
Calculator
Currents – Loads app, but not selected article
Gallery
Google Now – Cards can’t be sent
Google+
Play Music (appears to work on Android 4.0, but music is not transferred immediately)
Samsung’s Calendar
Street View on Google Maps
Most other Android apps
So, I got all excited knowing that the official Google Calendar app made it to the marketplace recently.
I've been using for a handful of days now.
And I find myself leaning back towards the stock Samsung calendar (to my own surprise). It seems like a well polished calendar app.
I have not heavily dug into every nook and crannie of each app, but am wondering...
Has anyone noticed any blaring differences between the apps?
Pros vs Cons of either?
Chime in.
My first thoughts:
Samsung wins an 'nicer' looking interface
Google wins at 'feeling' like the google web/desktop calendar (as expected), which some might like if they use that a lot
Samsung wins on at least being able to change a background color theme?
Samsung wins at getting me my already written info to my eyeballs quicker (ex/ the month view shows text on each day, the google does not)
I use the Samsung app and really enjoy it. I use Google sync to sync my work calendar (Outlook) with my Google account, and then just since my Google account through the Samsung app. Works well, looks good, no complaints.
ROM - OdexedBlue
Baseband - LJ7
Kernel - Stock LI3

Is there any way to use the samsung calendar on other roms.. ive tried pulling it and placing it on another rom but I honestly dont know if im trying to use the wrong files or does it need tw to function.
I've had no qualms with Samsung's stock app, particularly after the JB update.
Agreed, post JB update and stock is much better, I wish there was some theme support though. stock colors aren't my favorite, a cleaner pure Goog theme would be sweet

On stock rooted GB27 and if I enable any accessibility service (Such as the one for Pebble for example, which lets it read notifications), the TTS voice starts announcing page numbers for the home screen and app drawer until I disable all services. Is this fixed on any ROMs or should I just go back to ignoring JB?
Not sure if that's a bug or just the functionality of the app. When enabled it describes all actions taken within settings and system ui.
I know an acquaintance with very limited sight with a GalS2 (att) with this feature and the phone is constantly making announcements while navigating screens or menus.

All I can do is say i got the same problem. (Poncho has no idea)
To everyone still asking:
If you enable the Pebble accessibility service, it partially enables "Text to Speech" accessbility on the home screen (and elsewhere?). This is totally undesired.
FYI, Pebble is a wristwatch that can bluetooth pair with your phone.
NOW, Bump, for great justice and the same problem. What JB roms will spare my Epic 4G Touch?
Sadly. It seems there is yet no fix for any of the samsung devices. However samsung is aware of it. Question now is when and whether it will ever be implemented into a rom for rooted devices...
