Help requested for HTC Wildfire rooting - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I have unlocked my wildfire by following the steps given in htcdev website. Current details of my mobile are -
***UNLOCKED***

I am a total noob, trying to root my mobile for the first time. Would like to install cyanogenmod. Would also like to take a backup of htc sense if possible, so that I can revert back in case I miss its features. Request detailed step-by-step directions for the same.

You might want to dig through this thread as you're in a similar situation.
As the htcdev unlock method doesn't give you s-off ("security off") you probably want to ask the thread starter how he managed to get s-off after using the htcdev method. You'll also get some useful background information about rooting etc in general.

just for extra info, you do not need to be s-off though to root and flash custom roms. i was s-on for a few months at 1st too but my method of unlock was with revolutionary not htcdev. you will need to install a custom recovery and then if you want a quick root i believe that just flashing cm7 gives you this!! otherwise you need to install the superuser and binaries?? please dont quote me on this and DO please research as its been a long time and different method etc since i performed unlock and root access. regards slym.
p.s welcome aboard
R.V.3

Slymobi, You are right, if you have s-off and a custom recovery you can just flash cm7 and you will have root access. No need to flash superuser or binaries as these are included in the Rom.
Revolutionary is the best way of getting s-off and flashing a custom recovery but I don't think your version of hboot is supported so you will have to downgrade first.

Oh, he isn't s-off but yes, he could flash a custom ROM. However he might run into troubles (i.e. the radio if he gets problems with wifi, gps or bt - he wouldn't be able to flash a different radio without s-off)

Exactly, s-off is the way to go imo. My first custom rom on wildfire was cm7 and that needed a radio reflash to get GPS working.

or....... you can always just flash a sense rom, initiate gps then restore backup!! no radio flash/s-off needed

usually yes - but it looks like there's no confirmed method yet to achieve s-off after unlocking the phone with the htcdev method

I know I think the htcdev method should be avoided where possible for that reason. S-off is better for so many reasons not least if something goes horribly wrong when flashing you have more options to unbrick your phone.

the eng s-off tool isnt compatible with newer roms with custom kernels, do a nandroid backup of your current rom, then flash an older based rom with a STOCK HTC KERNEL. run the s-off tool, then restore your backup

Thats correct. Good to know. You learn something everyday.
From the One click S-OFF Thread:
System requirements:
•Windows XP SP2 or higher
•.NET Framework 3.5
•HTC Sync (or ADB drivers)
•Desire HD with original kernel (or Buzz 1.0.7 / 1.1.4 Sense). It is best to use STOCK ROM (lower than 1.7x)! The new HTC radio does not work.
Thank you that worked a treat. why didn't i yhink of that...

is your phone ENG S-OFF or SHIP S-OFF? (written at the top of the screen in the bootloader)
to flash radio, you need both Radio S-OFF and ENG S-OFF.
and what exactly does the error say in adb.

[Q] radio S-OFF?

hey,
Today i finally desided to perm root my DHD using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160 everything went fine and it all seems to work, i desided to install rom manager and flashed clockworkmod recovery. (clockwork also works fine and I have made a backup of my stock rom)
now i want to install this rom Android revolution HD http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984045and i need radio S-OFF and HTC desire HD S-OFF.
when i go into bootloader the top line say's ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF does this mean I am good to go?

YOU ARE Doing these well, if you flash ARev.HD later you can go back flashing an stok rom take this link for choose your OFFICIAL RUU...
http://xdafil.es/index.php?path=DesireHD/RUU/
but i think that if you taste a cooked rom you are not going back to RUU OFFICIAL ROM hahahah
CERTAINLY.. have you made HBOOT S OFF ENG-SPL????(its fully reversible flashing an stok rom) and It makes possible to recover the system of a bad flash recovery...
sorry for my bad english
What I think SERGI.3210 is trying to say, is that you need ENG HBoot or ENG S-OFF before you can flash radios.
Here are the threads you should read,
ENG S-OFF
RADIO S-OFF
I did not flash (well, I dont think I did) hboot and i don't now how to do this either the tekst in bootloader says this:
ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.0007
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
How do I make HBOOT S OFF ENG-SPL and is their a way to check if I already have it?
And what does this do?

uups!!! thanks andyharney! i forgot to put that you need ENG S-OFF to flash radios!!
certainly... take this XDA´S LINK for go back to OFICIAL RUU:
http://xdafil.es/index.php?path=DesireHD/RUU/
Use the ENG S-OFF tool in the first link to get ENG S-OFF. Without this you cannot flash radio.img's via fastboot.
Once you have ENG S-OFF use the other link to get Radio S-OFF. The tools are very easy to use and 99.9999999999999999% safe.
I took another look at the article i used to root and it said this:
you will have permanent root (S-OFF), as well as subsidy unlock and SuperCID. At this point, you can also choose to flash the engineering hboot
If you don't want the engineering hboot, just reboot your phone. You can verify you have permanent root by holding volume down while powering on (you'll see S-OFF in the first line of the bootloader). You are now free to install a new recovery and start flashing custom ROMs. If you don't want to flash a new ROM, it's safe to uninstall the Visionary app at this point.
Does this mean i already have radio S-OFF?

You need to flash a recovery(search the development thread for clockworkmod recovery)
Flash this recovery via fastboot(search the whole forum for a guide)
And then flash a ROM(or other things) of your choice via the recovery menu.
Hope this helps
Personally, I downgraded by flashing a stock 2.1 RUU, then used unrevoked 3.2 to root it and install clockworkmod.
Then just flashed a cyanogen nightly (#57). Although you can choose whatever rom you want.
I have tried with unrevoked 3 to root the phone, but at some point i got the following message:
Validation error: Backup CID is missing
any idea how to fix that?

once S-OFF, downgrading and then rooting is a lengthier process. As already stated in the post #2, after S-OFF just flash a recovery from the fast boot menu and thats all ur phone is rooted.
get the PC49IMG.ZIP file and the process from here. (most painless and secure algorithm)

Alright. I think I'm gonna get my device S-OFF soon...
So all I have to do is

2. Flash a recovery via fastboot
3. Flash a new ROM
That is all right?

If you are going for Step 2, there is no need for Step 1. Just flash a recovery via Fastboot, and you are good to go with Custom ROMs, even on the updated HBoot.

I've been reading alot about this but I don't geddit. Everyone says that with hboot 1.01.0002 you can't get s-off without using the xtc clip. Are you saying you just downgraded to Android 2.1 then flashed a custom ROM

What you have heard is false. HBoot 1.01x requires XTC Clip to get S-OFF, and, only then can it be downgraded and rooted.

If i used XTC clip to S-OFF a wildfire, is it then possible to restore a rooted ROM? Or do i need to root the phone, then when i load any ROM it is rooted, because root is at a lower level?
Is root access something which is stored in the operating system or some lower level?

Root is given by the app called Superuser. Just as in linux, every program that wants to do something that needs root rights, has to ask for it. In android that permission is "tunneld" by the superuser, which asks you if you want to grant an app root access, and then gives it to that app with your permission. But of course, the only way that superuser can grant root access, is when it is propperly installed, and has some files in the /system folder. Which is not possible without root permissions
So: if you are s-off, you can flash a recovery image trough fastboot (working with unrevoked gives you the custom recovery right away) by the adb command "flastboot flash recovery " (google for "cyanogenmod wiki flastboot" if you are planning it, it is really nice explaned). Trough that recovery you can apply some kind of an "update.zip", which installes the right superuserfiles on your system anx changes nothing else. Notice me if you want those files, I know where to find them here on xda.
From that moment on, when an app asks for root permission, you get a popup from the superuser app to ask if you really want to grant that app such permissions or not: if yes, the app has root access now!
This is all based on my experience with the stock ROM, don't know how the process works in CM or wildpuzzle.
Erwin
Edit: and if you want to delete or modify rom specific things (like htc stock app), you can connect your phone to your computer, mount your system as read/write by the command "adb remount" and then delete it trough adb commands. No need to go trough recovery for this.
Perhaps the same is possible if you have a file manager that can handle rooted phones, but not sure about that.

[Q] What HBOOT do i need to update my HTC One M8?

Hi,
I'm going to upgrade my rooted and unlocked HTC One M8 International version (From Norway, not a Sprint, Verizon or any american brand) to a custom Android 4.4.4 ROM, but what HBOOT and radio version should I download?
If you know, can you give me a download link to both of them?
As of now I want to flash this ROM, do I need to update my HBOOT or anything else using ClockWorkMod?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2744448
The phone is unlocked with HTC Dev, but what is the difference between S-On and S-Off?
Information about the phone from recovery if needed, don't really know what you need:
Got a 4.4.3 stock ROM installed which is rooted and ClockWorkmod v6.0.4.8
M8_UL PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-3.18.0.0000
RADIO-INVALID_VER_INFO (Probably the stock radio installed).
OPENDSP-INVALID_VER_INFO
OS- eMMc-BOOT 2048MB
Just tell me if you need more information.
Thanks

With bootloader unlocked, you can install custom recovery, root (obviously, since already have) and flash ROMs. S-off is only required for certain things. However, changing the hboot is one of them (unless you do so by "official" means like OTA); as well as flashing the radio and SIM unlock.
I'm not an AOSP user, so hopefully someone who is can answer your other questions (required hboot, radio, etc.)

Are you sure? Because the hboot for 4.4.4 is 3.19, not 3.18.
I know on Sense based ROMs you need the 4.4.4 firmware which comes with the hboot.

AFAIK, in general HTC's firmware changes only affect Sense ROMs, not AOSP.
Although, its a always a good idea to see if a particular AOSP ROM requires a particular hboot. There is no blanket yes/no answer to this question IMO and its a good idea to do your research when flashing a particular ROM.
