No hard reset buttons, is it intentional? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
Using GNex GSM. I got stuck from time to time testing apps. And I reset the device by pulling the battery out. Which is quite inconvenient as I needed to get the device out of the case. What is the reason there is no hard reset hole?

1) it would look hideous, this is a phone not a calculator.
2) if you use Apps that are coded well your phone should not lock up.
Here's my current uptime.

What phone did you have in the past with a hard reset hole?
Try holding down the power button longer next time.

You can take out the battery, that's plenty adequate. Why waste space, design and mechanics on a reset button when theres already a solution available?

On my Motorola Xoom, which doesn't have a removable battery there is a button sequence used to force a restart(volume up+power button) but then on the Xoom you need it because it has its momentary lapses of slow downs and freezes. On my nexus I have no need for it.

I just got stuck this morning by playing with ROM Manager 5.0.20, trying "Reboot into Recovery". The screen became completely black. The device became unresponsive to any button sequence. And of course I pulled out the battery. It's a little bit inconvenient as I needed to remove the case + back panel. A reset hole would be more practical.

GNex is my 1st smartphone. In the past I used dumb phone, never experienced any lock up. All my MP3 Players (Philips & Snoy) have a reset hole. So according to you holding powerdown button long time would trigger a hard reset? How long would that be?

No... the most practical design is to have 1 reset mode, pulling the battery. It's impractical to expect more than 1 option when the battery pull works 100% of the time.

Apparently I was incorrect. I remember holding down the power button on HC would reset the tablet (since removing the battery is not an option).

Ok if you say so, luckily it is doable on the GNex. But I have heard of devices where the users cannot have access to the battery, how do they do to disconnect the battery?

I heard they long press the power button.

They usually have an option to long-press the power button for a number of seconds (like 7+ sec) and it power cycles the device.

This thread reminds me of the Windows Mobile phone days, all of the PDA comes with a reset button which you can poke with a stylus. No one complained about WM being slow or hanging, it's a ritual to poke the reset button every night

[Q] Broke my phone, need help please!

Hey guys
My Galaxy Nexus on VW took a slight fall and got totally ruined - ridiculously fragile structure btw...but I'm sure you've heard enough of it.
Anyway, I got a replacement through the insurance and I need to send the damaged device back to them.
Thing is, I want the pics and videos from the internal memory. The screen is slightly cracked (can't feel the cracks, can see them through the screen) starting from just below the power button and extending across to the other side. The phone won't boot - I tried countless times by battery on/off, USB, full charge etc.
Is there any way I can get my data back?
I wasn't rooted, if that helps.
Thanks in advance!

Will it boot into fastboot? If so you can use adb to pull the contents of your sd card.
No it won't. Screen remains blank. I can sense the vibration feedback from the left side of the screen, but that is all.
Are you sure your digitizer isn't just completely shot?
Pull battery.
Hold Volume + and Volume - and Power.
Wait until it vibrates and release.
Press up volume twice.
Power once.
And see if you can access adb.

Sure. I have done that process before and it does vibrate once.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is adb? How do I know I have
accessed it and how will I then use it?
Thanks again all of you.

Button Problems and First Root Ever

Hi, Everyone! This is my first post on here but I have spent the better part of the last week reading all the different threads. Yesterday my Samsung Epic 4G decided to go a little insane on me. It was working eprfectly fine (especially for a 2 year old phone) when all of a sudden my power button seemed to start cyling and the power off screen kept popping up and the volume keys did the same. I turned the phone off and even tried taking the battery out and giving it a rest but the problem persisted.
Another issue was that some of the numbers no longer worked correctly. The even numbers both on the touch screen and keypad would dial
"2468" instead of the corresponding number; very weird! The phone had never been rooted or modded at all. Well I was able to get into the phone after figuring out a way to input my passcode with the faulty numbers and I performed a hard reset. The phone is back to completely stock but the power button and camera button do nothing. The volume up button works well but the volume down (besides lowring the volume) button causes google search to pop up and then a bunch of letters and numbers to be typed in both the google search bar and in the message of box of the last person I texted. I can still use the phone by opening the key pad to wake the screen up and I can text and call fine as long as I don't touch the Volume Down button. Also, battery life is ridicolously low. I am up for upgrade but don;t really feel like upgrading to the S3 just yet. Sorry for the long post. I know it is against forum policy but I wanted to get the whole story out there. So here is what I am looking to do:
I want to root the phone and install one of the roms to maybe eek out a couple more weeks out of it. Again it works ok now, just the sliding out of the keypad and lack of power button sucks. The phone boots up if I take the battery out and put it back in wihtout touching the power button.
I have read up on Odin and that looks somewhat straightforward. Just trying to see what you think is my best course of action. Again, I do not have a power button working or camera button and a faulty Volume Down Button. Maybe I can do the whole slip in the battery while holding "1" to get it into download mode? This will be my first time rooting a phone so any help is great and appreciated. Thanks and again, sorry for the really long post!
I forgot to mention that the phone is currently running on Gingerbread 2.3.6. This may or may not make it more difficult to root.
Did the phone get wet at all? Use it in the rain?

was thinking this as well
It actually got wet about 1.5 years. I threw it in rice for about a week and never had any issues. The phone has never frozen or had issues the past year and a half. Yesterday it was in the kitchen charging (with a samsung charger but not one for this phone specifically) and it started doing the whole power button/power off screen flashing. I was able to get it in download mode earlier today but i don't know about recovery mode since the power button is dead. Maybe I should root it to see if its a hardware issue?
Edit: I forgot to mention that the phone gets really really hot while charging as well in the area above the battery. Hopefully nothing short-circuited.
It could take a while before the corrosin gets bad enough to affect your phone. I dropped a phone in the toilet once, and it was over 2 years before it crapped out. Took it apart and it looked like an old Chevy wheel well inside.

That is a good point. I never thought of that. It was also in the kitchen which was humid and hot as ever yesterday. Do you think any kind of root or rom could help me squeeze a little bit of life out of my old phone.

Doubtful. If you're hardware's screwed, so are you.

So I left the phone alone for a couple days with the battery out. I go to turn it on today and it worked perfectly. Then after about 5 minutes the power button stopped working again, but everything else is ok. No random letters and numbers and the volume buttons work as well. Now, I'm kind of lost as to what to do. I do have a parts phone, same one as this. Maybe I need to replace the power button? It clicks and everything and even worked for a couple minutes but now is non-functional again.

Phone restarts in pocket

Hi all
Because the One X is quite a tall phone and has the power button on the top, I have noticed that when you're sat down it's quite easy to accidentally hold the power button down for a few seconds and cause a reboot - presumably the power button is pressing against a belt or hip, for example.
My real question here - is there any way to alter the reflexes of pressing the power button down, or increase the time it takes to cause the reset?
Also - has anyone else had the same thing happen? I'm thinking maybe, for practical purposes, the power button is better situated on the side of the phone when the dimensions get to this size...
Yeah, this happens to me.
Having the exact same problem, but with a much cheaper phone - a Samsung Pocket. Complete misdesign IMO and you wonder if the phone was field tested at all when you see things like this getting through - if a hard reboot with a hardware key combination is implemented then several buttons should be required to be held for the reboot to trigger. I just can't carry it in any pocket, will reboot several times a day.
Just ebayed a silicone bumper, hoping that cutting a hole in it where the power button is will make it recessed and that this will solve the problem. Maybe something similar is applicable to this One X phone.
I have the same problem, really annoying
would be interested too if there is a solution for this "problem"
Thanks for the replies guys - I suppose it's some consolation that it's not just me!
I'll let you know if I ever discover a "fix".
+1 Same happens to be. Are we sure it's just holding down the power button for to long and not a software problem causing reboots?

I originally thought the same thing, but when the only correlation I found was how tight my trousers were that sort of gave it away

[Q] Galaxy Note 2 - Possible power button problem?

Hi,
I have purchased a Galaxy Note II a month or so ago and never had a single issue. The phone has not been rooted or ROM flashed. It's 100% factor setting and such.
Here's my problem - I recently had a minor spill and it reached my phone. I snatched it out of harm's way immediately and it was perfectly fine after I wiped it clean. After a few hours, I noticed that my phone keeps rebooting itself and it never surpasses the Samsung Logo. I have tried multiple things:
1) Removed the battery and reinserted it - This didn't work. My phone powered on even without my assistance. I didn't push the power button or anything and it just turned on (Which is why I suspect there may be something wrong with my power button).
2) I tried booting my phone into recovery mode and download mode, but it didn't quite work. I managed to enter both modes, but it just brings me back to the Samsung logo within a snap. The longest period I maintained in either of the modes was 5 seconds.
3) I swabbed a little bit of rubbing alcohol on the power button. It didn't do anything. I think it was by chance that my phone didn't reboot until a minute after.
4) I tried a spare battery I had lying around. That didn't do anything. My phone continued to reboot itself.
5) When my phone managed to stay on for a minute, the power menu kept popping up (The menu where it says "Restart, Flight Mode, Silent/Vibrate... etc).
From the points I've mentioned, does it seem like a power button issue? Does AT&T fix these kinds of issues? Is it actually hard to open the Note 2 up and put it back together after a thorough clean?
Thanks in advance guys and gals. Appreciate your help!
FROM CHINA. SIMILAR SITUATION.
Guess it's not on the power button.
maybe the liquid flew into your mainboard or under your touch screen.
Since your note2 had not been rooted.
Send it to costomer service ?
Umm I don't think any liquid entered from the screen. Chances are, it probably went in through the power button, volume controls, USB, or any combination of that.
try to unfix it and check?
seems not difficult.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
It sounds like the sticky power button issue of the note 1...
And if the liquid contains sugar. ..then sticky is what gets left behind after everything else dries out.
I can't say for sure, but the residue may conduct electricity. ...causing the constant boots.
The device needs the residue cleaned out if present. ..g
Thanks! That's what I did. Brought it to a cell phone repair shop. They told me there are signs of residue and sugar left behind on the motherboard. They cleared it all out... Pretty expensive, but it got the job done!

Disable long hold power button to reset phone?

Is there a way to disable the hard reset caused by holding the power button for 7-10 seconds? I used the xposed additions to disable the power button, but it does not disable the hard reset from the very long power button hold. The reason I want to disable it is because my power button seems defected and it constantly presses it on its own which causes my phone to reboot or shut down. I used xposed to disable the power button and it helps, but the shut downs and reboots still occur from time to time.
I highly doubt it. That's going to be something hard coded into the processor or something along those lines. On just about any system you need to have some way of performing a hard reset even when everything else is royally screwed up. Not having that function is just a bad idea IMO, though I understand why you want to stop it.
I highly recommend you look into replacing the power button though. I've seen several devices become corrupt or damaged beyond repair due to the constant rebooting.
Or at least look at the power button thread in general section. I think the last few posts describes a somewhat risky way of fixing it yourself.

Thanks for the reply. So I've decided to remove the button as a temporary solution. I'm not removing the connected part on the inside, just the plastic button on the side and hopefully that'll stop anything from ever reaching the button deep inside. My only issue would be if the phone happened to shut down and I am not around a usb port, I may be stuck with a powered off phone. Unless someone has an alternative way of powering on the device without the use of the power button or a charger?
By the way, I am the OP but didn't realize I wasn't on my account when I posted the question.
A lot of the power button issues are actually a faulty switch, meaning removing the plastic piece won't help much. If it does for you that's great though. You'll be able to use something small like a pin or paperclip to still turn it on though.
