Phone restarts in pocket - HTC One X

Hi all
Because the One X is quite a tall phone and has the power button on the top, I have noticed that when you're sat down it's quite easy to accidentally hold the power button down for a few seconds and cause a reboot - presumably the power button is pressing against a belt or hip, for example.
My real question here - is there any way to alter the reflexes of pressing the power button down, or increase the time it takes to cause the reset?
Also - has anyone else had the same thing happen? I'm thinking maybe, for practical purposes, the power button is better situated on the side of the phone when the dimensions get to this size...

Yeah, this happens to me.

Having the exact same problem, but with a much cheaper phone - a Samsung Pocket. Complete misdesign IMO and you wonder if the phone was field tested at all when you see things like this getting through - if a hard reboot with a hardware key combination is implemented then several buttons should be required to be held for the reboot to trigger. I just can't carry it in any pocket, will reboot several times a day.
Just ebayed a silicone bumper, hoping that cutting a hole in it where the power button is will make it recessed and that this will solve the problem. Maybe something similar is applicable to this One X phone.

I have the same problem, really annoying
would be interested too if there is a solution for this "problem"

Thanks for the replies guys - I suppose it's some consolation that it's not just me!
I'll let you know if I ever discover a "fix".

+1 Same happens to be. Are we sure it's just holding down the power button for to long and not a software problem causing reboots?

I originally thought the same thing, but when the only correlation I found was how tight my trousers were that sort of gave it away

Yeah, the sexier my ass, the more likely it happens.

[Q] Power button becoming recessed.

is anyone else having this problem, my dinc is one of the originals got it the day it came out, any way after all this time the power button doesn't quite have a spring in its step if you will lol. its becoming more and more recessed as if its failing and not as easy to press as it use to be. i have to really push on it. any fixes?
There are apps in the market to shut the phone down and you can make the trackpad wake it. However it usually takes a few pushes to wake.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I am beginning to notice this as well, but I can't quite tell (through my silicon case) if the button is actually failing to spring back or becoming mildly obstructed from doing so. 95% of the time it's fine and springs back with the same strength it always has, though, so I'm thinking it's the latter.
I use CM to wake with the trackball. It wakes 100% while charging, but only 1/3 of the time on battery.

I suffer from the same affliction. SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Excessive flashing may lead to hairy palms and blindness!!
I have flashed so many ROM's, kernels and themes that my power button is slowly disappearing below the surface.

i wonder if you can take those screws out in the back and see if theres any way to like mod it or fix it lol i guess ill wait for it to be fubar
Mine is also recessing. My protip is to grow your fingernail out and use that to press it. ;]
Mine just did this last week, I don't find it a bother though. Seems like just normal wear and tear, the button does get pressed countless times throughout the day.
I used a friends dinc and theirs was almost flush with the rest of the phone

Screen Switches On/Off Continuously

Since a week ago my DHD screen started switching itself on every few minutes. The phone doesn't unlock but keeps lighting up which is annoying esp at night! I'm using stock 2.2.1 Sense so can't understand why this started happening. Reset or removing battery doesn't do anything either
Anyone else had this or found a solution?

I had a similar problem with my HTC Desire. I found it to be a problem with the power / lock switch on the top of the device that was getting 'stuck'.
Can you confirm if what your experiencing is the same as if you were to continually press the power / lock button on the top of the phone?
Yes, it's basically the same as the power button being pressed. I wondered if it might be stuck but it doesn't look any different or stuck..

Just out of curiosity, could the phone have been exposed to water at any point?
It's indicating to be a hardware problem since you have the Somebody on HTCPedia.com was having a similar problem and this seemed to solve their issue:
I had the exact same problem and it was (most probably) also caused by exposure to water: I had the phone in my pocket while cycling through rain and it all got wet. Since then, the power button got stuck, as in it was always pressed but sometimes was getting released depending on how the phone was held. For me, this resulted in the batter being drained in about 4 hours since it kept bringing up ShutXP.
EDIT: Do not use a flux remover (de-flux) solution/spray like I described previously (now deleted). In my case it worked for about 1 day and then then button was completely irresponsive which is a worse problem than having it always pressed (if you take the battery out, you can't turn it on).
I was inspired by a solution in another forum. I used surgical alcohol that yuou can by at any pharmacy. The higher the concentration, the better (I used 90 deg).
Take the battery out first !!!
Effectively, you drop a few drops of alcohol inside (yes, inside!) the phone through the small cracks around the power button. I used a pipette but dipping cotton in alcohol and then squeezing also works. Don't worry about dropping to many drops of alcohol ... it dries very quickly. I then blew in- and shook the phone strongly (this was important) to make the liquid advance a bit inside and also to dry it. You then need to leave the phone to dry. You can speed that up if yo put it under a desk lamp.
All solved now. Power button now works fine. What happened probably was that humidity/water created a short circuit, giving the same result as keeping the power button pressed.
If the above doesn't do the trick, you can try to unscrew the plastic shield that covers the button, remove the external button and access the real micro-mechanical button that is soldered onto a very small pcb. You give that one a good clean, rubbing it generously with a small piece of cloth dipped in alcohol. You can also try scratching the surface between the button's soldered pins since that's where a short circuit probably formed in the first place.
Hope you fix it.

Thanks a lot for the help. This is why xda is such a great forum. From this I worked out it is the power switch and after playing with it and seems to be working on for now. If the prob happens again I'll try the alcohol trick above.

hard reboot issue

sometimes when i have my hox in my pocket, the power button gets pressed to long and my phone reboots. mostly it happens in tighter jeans. a little bit annoying.
anyone else with this problem?
Jap me ;-)
i first thought that it was a software reset, but now i think it is
definitly the Power-Button-Reset, because it always happend
in my Jeans, never at use or on the desk.
Regards
Robert
i dont think that there is a solution for this or is there one?
Get yourself a bigger pair of jeans or stop eating
(just teasing)
Does it happen only when you sit down? If yes, how is the phone oriented (power button on top or on bottom?)
No idea if this helps, but I actually had the same problem with my HTC Desire which I had in my pocket on my flight. Thing was, I turned it off to save battery but it always turned on again. Until I realised, that I oriented the darn phone wrong for nearly 2 years. Powerbutton on bottom solved the problem for me (seems logical if you think about it). :>
Not sure if that helps with the slightly bigger One X though ^^

[Q] Not-working volume rocker workaround...

Hello there nice people of Desire HD's XDA Community,
I have a somehow strange problem regarding my phone. After around 3 years my Volume Down button has stopped working. In order to turn the vol down, i have to push the Up button and then slide the bar down.
This isn't much of a problem but the real problem is that, now, I cannot enter Recovery mode if something goes wrong with my ROM. Has any of you faced something like this in the past?
Thank you for your time
If you're running a custom ROM, it probably has an advanced power menu that will allow you to reboot directly into Recovery. Just hold the power button until the power menu shows up and see what options are available. If you're using 4EXT Recovery, its Control app has a power menu that allows you to reboot into Recovery as well. If you're running CWM or TWRP, perhaps their apps have a similar option.
If your phone is off you can try connecting it to your computer and using adb to boot directly into recovery,
adb reboot recovery
hey sharksfan7... Thank you for your answers. I am familiar with all of these functions.
I was asking for something in case of the phone does not boot and there is no PC available.
Or even if some user had the same problem before and can recommend me something he/she did. Like, replace the volume rocker (although I don't think a piece of plastic is the issue. More likely some "sensor" is fried/broken)
Again, thank you for your time
If the phone won't boot, you probably need a computer.
Hi there
My vol +/- plastic broke and fell out so when i need vol down + power i use toothpick , but just before it fell out completly i noticed button has 3 pads 2 for pressing buttons and one in middle for rocking action and that one fell out completly first and after that neither vol buttons using palstic button worked, so after a while it fell out completly and i discoverwd toothpick method.
So check if buttons work when you remove big plastic bar if they do see if pads are on place, biggest black is in middle, 2 smaller for pressing near end. Or just replace whole button.

Need help in buying a new volume button...
I'm searching on ebay for a new volume button, but can't seem to decide on which one can be the best... Don't seem that most are genuine (if any at all), but I don't expect that...
Can anyone help me on this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_s..._nkw=htc+desire+hd+volume+button&LH_PrefLoc=2
When I install the new one, does it going to stay firmly attached?!?
I'm asking this, cause on the last time that I dismantle the volume button, I don't know what I did, but I never got back the volume button firmly attached again as it used to be. Now it's very loosely and it very simple to loose it from the phone and that's why I'm buying a new one... to trying to fix the volume button to work and to get it firmly attached on the phone.
Hi there,
I've got the same problem here, but my volume buttons are gone..
I've ordered one from good old china (hehe).
I think you have to set a piece of elastic glue in the center of the button to keep it in place.
At least at my phone there is a little point of glue-like stuff there, very elastic.

Not arrived yet, will tell you then.
I think you have to organize the glue yourself..
Any news??
Yeah. Arrived this week, I just installed it. No glue delivered with the parts. And the parts aren't nearly the original, but I got two of them.
Because I'm using a cover, the volume keys didn't disappear until now.
Just took a long time to get them, next time I'm gonna spend 3-4 EUR more and order it from Germany...
Hello
I'm having an issue with the volume button too, so I'm using this thread.
I have only the down volume which is working, the up button doesn't respond whatever the ROM.
And now the button doesn't stand in place, I have to watch when i take it that the button volume stay still. (I may use some glue to fix as you wrote earlier)
Do you know what I have to change if the up is really down ?
I don't think my button is wrong, but maybe I'm wrong and there is some contact to chek before going further ?
Thank you for any help !

Edge Sense/Button Woes

I've had the phone for a few days now (ordered last week on Amazon), and thought I'd share my experience so far.
Edge Sense is buggy. Activating it sometimes activates the volume down button. Sometimes it's REALLY sensitive, and sometimes it just doesn't work. Doesn't really matter how I've calibrated the squeeze level.
These buttons... I understand the frustration that reviewers have, and not even from a defect perspective, but from a usability perspective. I find them too sensitive. I often accidentally press the power button as I handle my phone in different ways (e..g, trying to show a video to a friend on my phone in landscape mode; showing a friend how to use the camera), causing the screen to turn off.
Ghost presses on the volume down and power buttons happen sporadically, but enough times (in one day) to drive me nuts. When in my pocket and listening to music, the volume occasionally lowers (is it thinking I'm pressing the volume down button?). My phone has rebooted multiple times on its own (even into recovery mode on two occasions). It's as if it thinks I'm pressing and holding the volume down and/or power buttons. This happens maybe 2-3 times a day. It doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a HUGE pain, and a showstopping bug IMO.
I feel like when the phone gets hot, Edge Sense and the buttons go crazy with sensitivity and ghost presses.
The volume buttons don't work at all in battery saver mode!
For some reason, none of the buttons work when I have my phone in a car mount that squeezes onto the sides.
I really want to like this phone, because aside from these issues (for me, they're approaching to be dealbreakers), the phone is fantastic. The camera is truly phenomenal. I am really hoping that the upcoming firmware update arrives stateside ASAP, because I'm almost ready to hit the 'return' button on Amazon.

It seems since you have older software, maybe the Amazon units are shipping with older software. I wouldn't know, just a guess. But I'm quite sure an update or two will get better for you.

Yeah, its not "amazon units" or software versions. I have one direct from HTC, 3 days old. WORST buttons ever. Response is so variable its disgusting. And no one here has even mentioned putting a case on this u12+... Do that and buttons work maybe 10% of the time. Absolutely unacceptable...
And if you thing its a great build.... Think again... Those buttons are held on with double-sided tape... LMFAO
And you can get the back cover off without tools, its just adhesive all the way around.... One fingernail and your're in! But on the bright side, you can replace the battery really easy yourself... So enjoy!

Also what's the setting you left your phone's squeeze sensitivity at while these volume slide and phantom power happened?

It's really strange... The volume buttons work when the screen is off and you have something playing or paused. If there's nothing playing at all, they don't work.
At least this is happening with my phone. I wonder if anyone else experiences this. It certainly seems like it's by design.

Personally I've never had them be unresponsive (except for in a car mount and when the screen is off with no audio playing/paused weirdly). They're pretty responsive for me. In fact, they're TOO responsive. They're too sensitive, which is prone to a lot of accidental presses. I'm actually trying to avoid touching the buttons.
It's the ghost presses and edge sense freakouts that drive me up the wall, as seldom as they happen.
no problems on my USA U12+ 128GB straight from HTC preorder hardware version 3 and i even dropped it once in the bathroom from the window ledge and it fell on the tile floor and not even a scratch also it was without the case so im glad its not shattered but my volume buttons have been very solid and works well with edge sense if u set it to sensitivity level 3 or higher for me
I have some problem on mine too, the volume down button is extremely sensitive and a slight touch will trigger it, the top one is harder but I like it better since it makes no problem. The power button is sensitive but less than volume down so it's not so bad.
Also when holding the phone normally by the side or when in my pocket the down button is triggered by pressing or slightly bending the top of the screen, it's really annoying when listening to music in the car or making a call.
Bought mine from HTC last week with the 1.15 version. If there is no update on this by the end of next week I'll have to send it back.
I hope it's gonna get corrected, I'm with htc since the hd2 and never was disappointed so I'd hate to switch brand when close to everything else about this phone is perfect.

The Update is already near. I hope it'll roll out during the upcomming week. As far as I know it adresses Edge Sense and the button sensibility as well as battery life, and according to the tweet by LlabTooFeR it'll even bring the June 2018 security patches.
I for one have absolutely no issues with the buttons till now, however, seeing the number of people who are having problems makes me wonder if it's my settings or if I have not used my phone that much to experience any niggles.
I have kept the sensitivity to the third bar from the left.

Yeah indeed seems as if not all units are affected.
