so currently im on fxp45 with doomlords kernel for CM7
everything is awesome first of all
problem is that i wanna try an MIUI rom but want to be able to go back on CM7 with everything i have right now
if i back up my system switch kernels, run MIUI ROM with appropriate kernel, then revert back to CM7 kernel can i restore to the backup i made b4?
greatly appreciate it
I tried it and i can confirm that it works. But before you restore you have to switch back to the freexperia kernel or doomkernel, wipe cache and user data in CWM recovery and then recover the backup, otherwise it won't work (at least it didn't work for me, unless i wiped the cache and user data).
Thank you I will try tommorrow

Backup restore ONLY apps, not data.
Because this restore backup data causes a lots force close for you.

I guess zainthesnipe was talking about a full system backup (via CWM recovery), there is no difference between app and data in those backups. After restore the complete ROM will be exactly like it has been before. Settings, apps, user data, just everything. I just don't know what happens, if some apps are stored on SD... haven't tested it yet.
Useing CWM wiping everything clean to install a rom. At this point back up useing CWM. Now if I just restored that backup before every rom would that be like wiping everything for it?
rom install
If you don't perform the wipe before installing a different rom, all you are doing is installing over top of, and you can run into problems that way. The exception would be that some of the developers start the installation by formatting.

I get what your saying and its an interesting question..
RESTATED: WIPE EVERYTHING AND BACKUP THE WIPAGE....lol
So that if) t were restored, it would restore a blank...tricky to explain
Ok so imo, i dont think it works...i have zero base for my opinion. But even if it does work why? Wiping is faster than restoring anyway. Flashing TDJ's superwipe is even better and still faster than restoring.
Interesting question nonetheless

You want to backup before you wipe because if you backup afterwards you would be backing up either a blank ROM or by a small chance a wiped version of your current one.

Hey guys/gals, I just have a few specific questions I hope can be answered.
-When flashing via CWM, why do we need to use the Darkside Cache/Super wipe scripts? What does TWRP do that CWM doesn't that makes CWM require these scripts?
-Why should we not restore data via Titanium backup? What errors does it cause? If we do restore data by accident, is the only solution to reflash the ROM?
Thanks a lot

Older versions of cwm don't wipe properly on this phone, thats where the darkside scripts come in.. If you use twrp or cwm 6 and up you don't need them.. Also you can restore user apps data with titanium backup.. And in my opinion you can restore certain system app data as long as you are selective about it. The reason is that there could be changes to the rom that the restored data might conflict with.. In most cases you will get a lot of force closes..
But restoring your email settings and your sms. And wifi access points Shouldn't give u problems.. You can play around with it and see what works.. But if you experience any bugs you should try again with a clean wipe before you report them in the proper thread
If you do restore data by accident you can just go into your app management settings and delete the data. Or if that doesn't help you you can just go into your recovery and do a factory reset

Used PmR to download Bravia Engine to try, used mobile odin to flash it, in the process checking ever root and SU options, clearing Dalvik cavhe and wiping data, now my phone is unable to connect to WiFi and data. This does not bode well..

Why you flashed manually with Mobile Odin? The recommended method is to let PmR use the Custom Recovery to flash the MOD. Which recovery do you have installed on your phone? CWM, TWRP?

had CWM, after flashing with odin can't access anything cos of the wipe.
Stupid, stupid me
Stuck at the Samsung logo for quite some time now, what does that mean?
Should i wipe and factory reset or is there an alternative way out?
If you had cwm already then no meaning to use mob odin, anyway if factory reset doesn't work then have to Reflash rom.

had to factory reset, now I have a brand new spanking phone with all my data gone!
Well, at least the wifi and data are both working now, whew
You have a nandroid backup, of course? Try the tools on dr.ketan's signature.
As a last resort, you can try Kies to return to official, unrooted, stock Sammy-blessed state. :cyclops:
And start flashing again, afterwards!

I actually forgot to create a nand backup before messing with the flashing. UGH.
I guess being spoonfed as a previous iOS user has it's drawbacks.
Time to play with everything now that I have such a clean UI
Glad to know that your phone returned to life.:good:
Remember to make nandroid backups regularly.
Good Luck!
I recommend titanium backup or same other compare to nandroid.
Nandroid push you back to original state while you want to test mods and roms, titanium will be much helpful to restore data on cross roms.

was using titanium before, now i can't restore due to my data not being on cloud/sd card.
wouldn't a "snapshot" of my phone now be a better choice for a situation like this?

which app to use for nandriod backups? so far I've seen only CWM/TWRP.
I prefer titanium on ext sd card, bcoz note2 wipes internal sd card too.
Yes cwm/TWRP needs for nandroid.

TWRP seems to be working pretty well, but do i have to extract the folder and back it up on my desktop in case of another full wipe?
TWRP restores everything including desktop but remember it will be same as on day you have created nandroid. Subsequently changes won't have in it.

Oh that's cool! So it really just screenshot the entire phone and restores back to when it was made?
Side note, each backup is almost a GB big, won't it eat up a lot of memory on your phone? As such, which options are best to select when using twrp? (eg efs, data, system)
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 2
Efs is just 20mb, needs when you have messed up imei, it is must in my point of view even if you don't want nandroid backup
data is backup of installed applications
System is ROM, which needs to recover device when you have got something wrong.

Yeah, I kmow it sounds noob but here is the thing.
You do a nandroid backup, then i restore it, simple as it is.
But should i completly do a clean up be4 doing the restore and does the restore be as good as the last time I used it? Or will it have some issues after first restore?

Restoring is better and less work than flashing through odin.
No wipe is neccery with restore..I personaly prefer Twrp cause it saves your efs and modem in seperate partitions for easy restore.
yes I know, but what are the steps so I can fully restore it as it was before without any bugs or failures.. only tap on restore?
Yes just tap on restore; it automatically wipes and restores each partition you've backed up.

in my experience, I always backup the ROM I'm using before flashing any new ROMs
in any ROM backup, I recommend that you checked the boot, system & data (I use TWRP recovery) if you want to revert to it later on
if all three items are checked, you can just restore it & it'll be the same as when you backed it up
as for the wipe, I always wipe (data, cache & dalvik cache) before flashing &/ restore anything, just to be on the safe side
