If my gnex root n unlocked bootloader - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

If my gnex root n unlocked bootloader can I update gnex when ota update is Avalible.?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Root is fine if you use an app like OTA root keeper to save root access before updating.
Unlocked bootloader doesn't matter.
If you've used root to modify / add / remove any system applications, if you have custom recovery, if you changed your radio from stock or have changed any system files, the OTA will fail.

It would work still work yes but you have to have stock recovery and not mess with the system.

Check the stickies for efrant's guides to the Nexus. There are instructions for all of your questions.
I was at the same stage as you and was able to follow his steps and do everything easily.
Good luck!

Unlocking and rooting...

I have just rooted and unlocked my Galaxy Nexus, I have not done anything else it's stock, but rooted and unlocked via Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit.
WIll I still be getting official updates from Google, or do I have to go back to 100 % stock?
You're good. You will lose root on updates but that's it.
Edit: when your say "root", you don't mean flashing CWM over stock recovery right? That will break ota updates.

Root alone won't break it, but you'll lose root when you OTA. If you've changed radio, recovery, or anything else you won't get OTAs. You'll have to flash them manually.
if you dont plan on flashing CWM you can get voodoo rootkeeper to maintain root after OTA in the market.

[Q] Steps for an update to Android 4.0.4

Hello guys,
Can anyone tell me the steps of how to install Android 4.0.4 update to the stock, unrooted Android 4.0.2 on verizon samsung galaxy nexus?
Use the galaxy nexus 6.0 toolkit and choose the option you want. Its very quick and easy if you dony know hoebto manually use fastboot.

Download the IMM76K update file and put it at the root of the internal SDCard and make sure it is named update.zip. Then reboot into recovery and apply the update. If you are on stock 4.0.2 (ICL53F), the update will apply and you'll be on 4.0.4. Be warned that the only 4.0.4 packages we have currently are not official updates, so it is possible you will have to flash back to 4.0.2 to update to 4.0.4 in the future if the actual update is a different build.
But I just saw the steps on Android authority on how to update to 4.0.4. Could anyone please check those steps & let me know

Unless you receive the update OTA, there is NO way to do it without an unlocked bootloader or root or a custom recovery.
If you want to root without unlocking, do this, then apply the update by following this.

If he uses a toolkit like that, it will unlock his bootloader and wipe his data...

This will NOT work, as the file needs to be in /cache, not /sdcard, for the stock recovery to flash it on a GNex. It was different for other devices, but this does NOT work on a GNex, at least not the GSM version.

Want to explain how I was able to flash it in stock recovery then when I had it at the root of /sdcard? I was on fully stock 4.0.2 courtesy of the ICL53F images provided by Google, recovery included.

Not sure. Maybe it is different on the Verizon version.
I though it worked like that as well (because that's how it worked on my Nexus One and Nexus S). But it wasn't the case when I got my GNex (GSM version). It had to be in /cache.

if i flash update file from takju 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 through cwm with just unlocked bootl

OK to get a few things right here, you need to have stock recovery to install OTA, no it won't relock boot loader, yes it will erase CWM. Your rom needs to be 100% stock (including boot loader, kernel and radio aswell as rom and recovery).
The way I just went to 4.1.1 (takju) I was running the preview JB Google IO rom anyway so in CWM I reflashed that to undo any system changes I made. Then using Mskips nexus tool kit I used it to flash stock recovery and then BOOT (NOT FLASH) to CWM. Find the update and flash it. Before you do all this use titanium to back up your stuff, do a nandroid and get voodoo OTA root keeper so you get root back after the update.
Then using the tool kit again I used it to flash CWM back. Then your done. I won't give further instructions but for further reading efrant has very good posts about this stuff, mskip has very good instructions on his tool kit in the thread

i'm still a little confused. my phone is completely stock. it's a takju 4.0.4. i don't want to wait for the OTA for jb 4.1.1. i was going to use the nexus tool kit to unlock the bootloader ( i believe that's required to boot it into cwm) then run the OTA update that people posted for my version to update it. I don't care about keeping cwm or bootloader, just want the update now and keep the phone still stock. i also want to make sure that i'll get OTA updates in the future. It looks like I can just boot it into cwm without flashing it, so that's what i'm going to do.

Yeah you can but you need to unlock the boot loader to do it, which wipes your entire phone so back up any thing you want to keep like photos or music. When the bootloader is open you can just leave it and just lock it if you need to send for warranty. Or if you already have root but locked boot loader there is a free app to unlock it on play store

once, i update the file using the nexus toolkit to boot into custom recovery, once it updates, it will lock the bootloader and the phone will be back to stock right? or is the bootloader going to stay open.
also, will i still get future OTA updates if i just do the update by booting into recovery and not flashing cwm?

Once you unlock it the bootloader stays open until you choose lock I again. You can still get ota but remember you need the matching bootloader, kernel, radio and unmodified system and recovery. So just booting cwm is fine to apply and then after its applied the patch you can flash what ever you want again. I find its always a good idea to make a back up of a 100% stock rom and keep it on the pc just in case. This is all simple and quick with the tool kit

Hey, first, thanks for the replies. Second, if I unlock the bootloader to install update, make no other changes, meaning everything else is stock and the update is googles stock update, them once the update is done, can I run the toolkit again to lock the bootloader. Doing this will it bring my phone to same everything as a stock ota updated one? Or is me unlocking and then locking bootloader going to cause me to have a different version for the next ota

No worries its fine. Yes after you have successfully applied a stock OTA patch onto a stock rom then you are running the same as everyone. Their are minor regional differences, like takju and yakuto (what ever lol) toro, toro plus etc but flashing a ota patch from a different build won't work on a rom that doesn't match.
You can go to the Google developer site and search for the full ROM and you know definitely its 100% as its meant to be, the patches just write over the bits which change in updates. The thing to bear in MIMD about flashing the whole ROM from Google site is that it will wipe your entire phone
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images (keep looking through for the build you want and you can flash it using the flash tool. Back up your stuff like music photos etc first)

Root + Original Bootloader

To root the phone I had to install CWM as the bootloader and then run a zip file to obtain root.
Because I installed a custom bootloader, I can't receive OTA updates anymore so I can't get the S3 Premium Suite update.
How can I revert to the original bootloader and maintain my root? Can I just flash the original bootloader with Odin?
Any advice would be appreciated.

No you installed a custom recovery not a boot loader.
Because you installed a custom ROM you can't get updates
To get the original RECOVERY you need to flash a stock ROM thru Odin, and to update anything stock you need to remove root to get any Kies updates or else youll get errors.
And even so I don't think the ATT S3 has had the update to Premium Suite.
(Anyone can correct me on this one)
I think only international S3 has been updated to Premium suite

you are correct on all this, jayRokk.
OP, there is an unroot video guide near the bottom of post #2 in the link in my thread. the stock, unrooted firmware can be located in the android development section.

Sprint G Nex OTA update problem

I just flashed mysidspr-fh05-factory-8cb5208b image, unrooted and locked the bootloader so I am now on complete stock 4.1.1. When I accept the OTA it downloads but during install I get the dead android. Any ideas? No root and locked bootloader so there should be no issues right?
Try reflashing the stock recovery over the one that's in the 4.1.1 package
To do this use the gnex toolkit by mskip
I had the same problem when flashing stock 4.1.1 and trying to update
Its a problem with the stock recovery verifying update signatures
