[Q] Steps for an update to Android 4.0.4 - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello guys,
Can anyone tell me the steps of how to install Android 4.0.4 update to the stock, unrooted Android 4.0.2 on verizon samsung galaxy nexus?

Use the galaxy nexus 6.0 toolkit and choose the option you want. Its very quick and easy if you dony know hoebto manually use fastboot.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

Download the IMM76K update file and put it at the root of the internal SDCard and make sure it is named update.zip. Then reboot into recovery and apply the update. If you are on stock 4.0.2 (ICL53F), the update will apply and you'll be on 4.0.4. Be warned that the only 4.0.4 packages we have currently are not official updates, so it is possible you will have to flash back to 4.0.2 to update to 4.0.4 in the future if the actual update is a different build.

But I just saw the steps on Android authority on how to update to 4.0.4. Could anyone please check those steps & let me know

Unless you receive the update OTA, there is NO way to do it without an unlocked bootloader or root or a custom recovery.
If you want to root without unlocking, do this, then apply the update by following this.

If he uses a toolkit like that, it will unlock his bootloader and wipe his data...

This will NOT work, as the file needs to be in /cache, not /sdcard, for the stock recovery to flash it on a GNex. It was different for other devices, but this does NOT work on a GNex, at least not the GSM version.

Want to explain how I was able to flash it in stock recovery then when I had it at the root of /sdcard? I was on fully stock 4.0.2 courtesy of the ICL53F images provided by Google, recovery included.

Not sure. Maybe it is different on the Verizon version.
I though it worked like that as well (because that's how it worked on my Nexus One and Nexus S). But it wasn't the case when I got my GNex (GSM version). It had to be in /cache.

[Q] Followed instructions to put yakju 4.0.1 on my GN, now not receiving OTA updates

I got a Galaxy Nexus from Negri that had the yakjuzs (Hong Kong) build of ICS on it. I followed the directions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881 to put yakju on the device, but checking for updates in the About Phone part of the settings or putting the *#*#checkin#*#* code into the dialer says my phone is up to date. It's only on 4.0.1 and I know 4.0.3 is available. What gives?
You should of just put 4.0.2 on there. 4.0.3 is not officially available yet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Well even if 4.0.2 is all that's available over the official channels, I'm still curious as to why the phone would be telling me it's up to date on only 4.0.1. I'd prefer to avoid wiping the device and manually installing 4.0.2 if possible (particularly because I'm not very experienced when it comes to this stuff-- I had a Nexus One before and just stuck with whatever updates I got OTA on the stock ROM for the entire time I used it).
Nobody has any idea about why this would be?
Hi,
I follow the same guide lastnight. I believe that the update is not a global release therefore it will come out staggered anyway. For you to worry to would have to find a friend who has yakju as standard and has already receieved the update. If they have yakju as standard and have not got the update, your area just hasn't received it yet.
I used the Toolkit 2.0 to unlock the boot loader and flash CWR. Then you can flash any rom your would like to including 4.0.3. Though I havn't found a official rom packaged for CWR yet.
How to manually update your Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.0.2
Part 1: Getting ADB to work with your Android phone and your PC
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/
Tip: To ensure your PC recognises your device and install the ADB and USB drivers, try installing PDAnet first on your PC and on your phone.

Part 2: Rooting process
http://theunlockr.com/2011/12/14/how-to-root-the-samsung-galaxy-nexus
Part 3: Installing ClockworkMod Recovery
I have tried installing clockworkmod by following the other guides but after rebooting again, it revert back to the stock recovery.
Then I found the solution at this forum posting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357642
Since you have rooted and unlocked your bootloader, you skip to the section "How to install clockworkmod"
Part 4: How to manually update your GSM Galaxy Nexus with the Android 4.0.2 OTA
Since you have already Rooted, Unlocked Bootloader and Installed ClockworkMod, you just have to download the Android 4.0.2 update from Google via a link at this website http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-gsm-galaxy-nexus-android-402-ota and copy over that zip file to the root level of your Galaxy Nexus internal storage space.
Then boot the phone into bootloader mode, then select Recovery and it should go into ClockworkMod Recovery. From there, just select the Apply Update from SD card and let things run their course. Once done select Reboot from the ClockworkMod Recovery menu.
Tip: You might wanna do a backup using ClockworkMod as an insurance. This backup is actually a Nandroid backup.

Yanju Galaxy Nexus crashed on system update

Hello, my rooted Yakju Galaxy Nexus crashed this morning when it was being auto updated to 4.0.4 and now it's stuck on 4.0.2 and won't update (I had to pull the battery out to exit the error screen). How can I update to 4.0.4 build? Do I have to do it manually? if so, what are the proper steps to install the official google build for 4.0.4 OS?
It's simple, use the Toolkit

The update failed because you have something that is not stock, be it the kernel, recovery or any files in /system. You can replace whatever is not stock with the stock version, or you can just re-flash the stock ROM (see here for instructions).
ahh i actually used that ToolKit to root my phone. Also, is there a way to know what part of my phone doesn't use the stock?

[Q] any difference between factory 4.0.4 or OTA to 4.0.4 from 4.0.2?

hi i just upgrading my phone from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 imm76i (gsm/hspa+ without google wallet),
i am going to root the phone by cwm recovery, then i have some questions:
when i was on 4.0.2, i rooted the box by cwm, and when i want to do update by OTA, i have to refresh back to the original recovery in the factory 4.0.2 image to apply the package, and that's what i have done...
so here is the question: if i root it by cwm again, and then flash the new recovery.img from factory 4.0.4 image download from "https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakjuimm76i"
to the phone, will it keep the ability to OTA to next android version? in another way, is there any difference between OTA & factory image OR, is there a identification to know that whether this device flashed a factory image or ota from a previous version?
ok, then if do not mv/rm /system/recovery-from-boot.p after flash cwm(for root), will it restore the stock recovery and keep the ability to do OTA?

The ota is usually just the parts of the rom that have been updated, those image files are the whole rom, if u root u will be able to get the ota but it won't install even with factory recovery,I haven't done it since my N1 but if I remember right u can delete super user from system app folder and delete,--- com.noshufou.android.su and reboot and root should be gone then ota will work and after u update u just root agn .... but your way u did it is always an option ....

thank u for response, i tried to update to 4.0.4 from rooted 4.0.2, and everything is ok.. according to your condition, i think there may be some difference between nexus S and galaxy nexus, so root is not the question(though i met some problem while rooting 4.0.4 caused by the version of su.zip is out of date ).
now i am on 4.0.4 and rooted by cwm, and i didn't delete /system/recovery-from-boot.p, i hope that i will not have to re-flash stock recovery when the next OTA come
When you say that is rooted through CWM, means what exactly? You only used the CWM to root the device? But how?
yep cause i wanna use stock rom on my GN so far, so i use cwm only for root(by flashing a su.zip), and after googled a lot, i think it has went back to stock recovery now, no longer worry about OTA, thank you

No difference. If you did not delete the two files (/system/etc/install-recovery.sh and /system/recovery-from-boot.p) then your device will automatically flash the correct stock recovery on every re-boot.
EDIT: Actually there is one difference: the OTA places those two files on your system, while a full stock ROM does not.

This is wrong. Rooting has no impact whatsoever on being able to install an OTA update.

[Q] Flashing 4.0.4 yakju (coming from 4.0.2 yakjuux)

I have unlocked, rooted, and installed Clockwork Recovery on my Galaxy Nexus (GSM, Wind Canada), and now I want to flash 4.0.4 yakju.
My current bootloader is PRIMEKK15 and my current radio baseband is UGLA4
Is flashing 4.0.4 yakju as simple as downloading the image found on google's site (yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f.tgz), putting it on the phone, going to Clockwork Mod, navigating to "install zip from SDcard", then choosing yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f.tgz, or do I have to open the tgz, then open the tar inside, and then extract this zip and install that in CWM http://i.imgur.com/wXC64.png
Since it's not a custom ROM like AOKP or CM, do I have to wipe data/factory reset in clockwork? Do I have to flash gapps?
Do I have to flash the new bootloader and radio baseband found in 4.0.4 separately?
Also, some people report reception problems with the baseband included in 4.0.4. If I want to go back to UGLA4, is that possible? I would be using the CWM "radio.img" for UGLA4 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23149491&postcount=139
I think that's all the questions I have, lol.
Well first off, if you're going to do it I'd just recommend you wait for the 4.1.1 image for the GSM GNex to drop. If you're really ansy, then you could flash 4.0.4 and you'll still get the OTA, but just something to think about.
Now to the question, no, you don't flash it like a ROM in CWM recovery. If you wish to completely move to yakju (or takju) to get on the Google update line (not sure why else you'd do it), you need to flash the images via fastboot. All parts of the images. It's important to have the proper bootloader and radio if you intend to receive and automatically install OTA updates. If you don't, you won't be able to install it as it checks for the radio and bootloader as part of the install process.
Follow this guide from Efrant, it's gold: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
Don't use a toolkit!

I haven't heard about any issues with the latest 4.0.4 radio outside of isolated problems. You can change the radio if you want (via fastboot, rly quick), but as I said, it'll stop you from auto-installing OTAs (which is why you went to yakju, isn't it?). You'll also get a new radio with 4.1.1.
Hmm, I might not even bother, seeing as to get the updates I'd lose CWM and root. Perhaps I will just wait for 4.1 like you said and install that.
By the way, since I am on 4.0.2 but I have CWM, does that mean even if my yakjuux build got 4.0.4 OTA, I wouldn't get notified (because of the custom recovery)??
EDIT: Say Google puts up a 4.1 image next week, I would just need to download it and follow the same steps that are outlined in that post (flashing all the different images in fastboot)?

You can flash CWM and root it again after going to yakju, but you'll have to update manually (no auto-installing OTA) after that. You have to pull the image and flash it, and use an app like "OTA root keeper" to hold onto root.

You'll be notified, but the update won't install. It requires stock recovery to auto-install.
Cool. In that case, I will just wait for JB, then once I flash that image myself, I will reflash CWM and root my phone again.
Thanks for the help, and thanks for the link to that thread!

Worried to update to JB 4.1 from rooted 4.0.4

I bought the Galaxy Nexus a week ago and I updated it to 4.0.4. I also used the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit found on this forum to perform the 1-click install too unlock the bootaloder and root the phone.
Today I got the message of the new 4.1 update and phone downloaded it. Now I am worried to restart the phone and update since I heard that I could brick the phone because I could have another recovery. I don't know if I have another recovery and for sure I know that I haven't touched any system file or kernel.
What I would like to have is the new JB 4.1 on my phone without wipe anything and have all the benefits of the "1-click install".
As you have noticed I am still noob on this root things.
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Just flash one of the many jb roms available on this forum and voila you will be on jelly bean. Make sure you backup and do a full wipe cause it's a new base. You don't need the ota unless you are planning on unrooting your phone.

Where can I find the JB rom? You said I should wipe the configs but I don't want to reconfigure again the phone, but apparently I am understanding that this is the only way?
So I should turn off the phone without restarting it. Open the recovery (How can I do this?), do the 3 wipes (data, cache and dalvik) and then install the rom by putting the .zip on the internal memory of the phone?
Should I put the .zip rom now that the phone is on?
Sorry but I repeat that I am very noob.
Thanks in advance.

The update will not install if you have a different recovery, you have to flash back the stock recovery and then update to use OTA. After this you'll have to root your phone again.
OR you could flash a pre-rooted rom like eqjunkie829 proposed.
Edit: To keep the stuff you have on the phone flash stock recovery do an OTA update and re-root. If you don't plan on flashing stuff and only want root there is really no need to flash a custom recovery.

As I said I did the "1-click for all" option on the Galaxy nexus toolkit. This means that I have another recovery and I cannot install the update.
So the first option is gone.
At this point, if I want to perform the last option, I should turn off the phone, connect the phone in the fastboot mode and use th galaxy nexus toolkit to reinstall the stock recovery. Then I turn on the phone and the update will install. After this I have to re-eneter the phone in the fastboot mode and root the phone always with the galaxy nexus toolkit.
Am I right?
