Virgin Mobile HTC One V Wifi Hotspot - HTC One V

Is this even possible on a rooted phone? I have been scouring the interwebz looking for an answer that will allow me to set up this phone as a hotspot for my iPad.
So far all I have found was some stuff about Virgin Mobile charging you and extra $15 a month for hotspot service which is BS since I just got rid of my Optimus V, which had free hotspot and tethering, for this phone.
Any help or answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Oh and the real kick in the crotch is that I was only paying $25 a month but after upgrading I have to be at the $35 a month plan. Worth it for the phone, not worth it if it now lacks a hotspot.

Moved to Q&A. Please post all questions there, thanks.

i've also scoured the interwebs for an answer to this question. anyone?

Question about wireless tether

I rooted completely, and now am installing wifi tether... but my question is, will this cost me anything? ive looked around but i cant get a definite answer. I dont want to do this and then get a bill with the mobile broadband charge...
Thanks.
Nope. It shouldnt. I don't think there's really any way for Verizon to tell because you're really just using an app that redirects your 3G connection to other computers over WiFi.
This is my 3rd phone that I've had which I've used some sort of hack to get tethering to work. So far after about 5 years I haven't been billed once.
Thanks... i kinda figured that... I remember doing this kind of stuff back in the razr, krzr days and never got caught.. Im suprised they never caught on lol
you have unlimited data, though it really isn't unlimited. If they see you going above like 5gb a month etc ( I think it is usually around 5gb) they will start asking questions so just don't do to much.
Alright Thanks.. Now i have absolutely no remorse for turning down the pre plus with free hotspot... LOL
Yeah I just install 'My Verizon' and monitor my usage throughout the month so I stay around 5gb or under. Haven't had a problem using this method...I only tether to use with my ipad.

Tethering on Boost Mobile?

Any idea how much data I can use while tethering my Evo 4g on Boost Mobile? I don't want to get kicked out of my cheap plan, but on Sprint I used at least 10GB per month. So I was thinking maybe 5GB/month, you think that's ok?
Not sure, that all depends on how much your plan is set up for.
The unlimited everything plan for $50 that goes down $5 every 6 months is the one I have.
Tread carefully with a well thought out explanation for excessive data use.
I guess it would really come down to the which phone is attached to your plan.
I never had a problem and I been doing it for 4 months now. If anything I notice drop in speeds.

Tethering After Root?

Hey all, well I been wanting the new Virgin Overdrive MiFi dongle. It's $35 monthly for 2gb of 3G, and unlimited 4G. Well I only have their 3G in my area, so let's just say it's $35 for the 2gb of data.
Well... I seen the One V for $120. I know a guy who is selling one for $90.
If I root it, will it tether Wi-Fi, WITHOUT paying the $15 to Virgin for tethering?
And if so, then will there be any negatives to it, compared to the Overdrive?
I tethered Wi-Fi on my HTC Inspire, and ran great. But curious about this phone.
I seen for $35 monthly, I get 300 minutes, and unlimited 3G and 4G. Well that's the same price as the overdrive monthly, but UNLIMITED data!
And no I don't need the phone, so I can just keep it in my pocket, and enable tethering when I need to access the web.
Needs a custom Rom(not hard to do)and it will tether and you get WiFi everywhere and a phone to listen to music play games take pics etc. Idk about the speeds of the two internet devices but my 3g is enough to surf the web not blazing speed but fast enough for Facebook Google YouTube etc. I'm guessing the WiFi hotspot has the same speeds so in my opinion go with the phone it's a nice one too so a plus all around and you don't have to pay extra to tether but it should be known after 2.5gb virgin mobile "slows" data speeds so it's pretty much unusable, I've never gone over it but you should know that.

Okay thanks so much, that's what I figured.
And you think the phone will have just as good 3G signal as the Overdrive? I didn't know if it'd get better signal, hence it being ONLY internet, no phone, etc.
But yeah basically I could root that One V phone, and pay $35 a month for unlimited (2.5GB till slower), but the Overdrive would cost the same, and it's ONLY 2GB, and then NO data after I use that. Atleast with the phone, it'll still have slower data, in case I really need it.
Am I correct? Just checking before I pay $90+
Well I went with the One V, in case anyone is wondering. I'll post when I root it, and hopefully it will have nice 3G speeds in my area.
$15 tethering is not an option for Virgin Mobile One V
I have had a Virgin Mobile MiFi card for abut two years and an HTC One V for about three months. I was hoping to use the One V as a hotspot and get rid of the MiFi card. Unfortunately, I still use both the MiFi and the One V. This is due to the fact that I am lazy. I enjoy rooting and modding a phone about as much as I enjoy taking apart my car's dashboard to connect one simple wire. I seem to have lost my enthusiasm and attention span for this sort of work about ten years ago.
In any case, when considering the purchase of a Virgin Mobile One V keep in mind that even if you want to, Virgin Mobile will not let you pay them $15 per month to use the One V as a hotspot. They only offer that option for their more expensive models. I totally assumed VM would be happy to take my additional money every month when I made my purchase. Despite the fact that the HTC One V is perfectly capable of acting as a hotspot when it is used with other carriers, Virgin Mobile blocks this capability.
So, I will be very interested to find out whether you succeed in making the One S work as a hotspot reliably after you root it and install a new ROM. I have only seen reports of troubles -- but, of course forums can represent a pretty biased sample of experiences. Personally I have failed to make my One S work as a hotspot (or as a weirdo bluetooth dialup kludge) with FoxFi -- with or without rooting. I have also failed to make the hotspot work after rooting and enabling the built-in hotspot feature. I am not sure whether I want to go to the trouble of doing a custom ROM to see if it fails too.
I continue to carry around a MiFi 2200 grandfathered in at $20 per month to use with my tablet. It is one more device to carry, keep charged, and pay for.
Again, I would sure appreciate a follow up on your experience, either positive or negative.
Thanks!

Thanks for your post. I just unlocked the bootloader, and rooted it. Now gonna flash a custom ROM, and then I will report back here.
I have the htc one v and i had the pacman 19.3 ROM installed on my phone and i could successfully use tethering, the speeds weren't great, but they were good enough for me to use my tablet. This rom is my favorite so far (I've ran CM10, AOKP, MIUI, Xperia One) but it's so great because it combines aokp cm10 and paranoid android into one super rom. I'd recommend using that. If you do choose to run PACman make sure you go with 19.3 and NOT 19.9. 19.9 is still a bit buggy and is being worked on, Use 19.3 for now. Hope this helps
You actually don't need a custom ROM to get tethering to work on the One V. As long as you are rooted, you can install http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ on any ROM, stock included, and tethering will work perfectly through that.

AT&T GoPhone

Hello all,
I recently changed over my OGP from AT&T postpaid to prepaid with the new $60 plan. The only issue I seem to be having is tethering. Does anyone know if Smartphone tethering is supported on the prepaid side? I would think data is data, and there would not be a restriction. Then again my wife reminds me that I get what I pay for.
Steve
Yes, according to ATT you should pay if you want tethering. .. but ,look around the forum and you will find the way to enable it on your phone... also, I doubt they'll notice unless you start passing your data limits...but you might not want to do that cause it costs an arm and a leg per Mb.
I used to have an old Unlimited for a NotSmart phone plan for $10/month and used tethering with no issues in my unlocked SGSII lol... Unfortunately, they discontinued that plan and after my contract was up I had to get a different plan...

Samsung Galaxy S6 Lease Hotspot unlock

Good day to all of the wonderful members of XDA. =) I searched through the 9 pages of general and cannot seem to find the information I am looking for. I conducted a search and when it seemed I was getting closer, I ended up with some more questions! So I have decided to post... If my answers are out there, please point me in the right direction, Thank you kindly in advance.
Now, I am currently leasing a Galaxy S6 from Sprint in Puerto Rico (United States) and I am really interested in unlocking the WiFi Hot spot since I have unlimited Data on my plan. I could pay sprint the extra $50.00 for 6Gb of data on Hot spot... but that's just too expensive when you add the price of the lease and the unlimited data plan as well as the insurance and additional hidden charges. Regardless of my reasons, I would respectfully like to know if there is a way to unlock the hot spot, and then return everything back to normal when it's time to return the lease. Please help and thank you.

Apologies for the double post... It's been a month and I came across this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sp...ot-tripping-knox-sprint-s6-supported-t3103196
Will rooting allow me to access the Wi Fi Hot spot? Thank you in advance!~

Good morning! Thank you for posting your question rather clearly.
Yes, you will want root for unlimited hotspot. Just return the phone to stock before returning to Sprint. You will want to follow @koop1955 guide located here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sp...uide-links-files-update-root-restore-t3366862
After you have rooted and have TWRP recovery installed.. use the link at the bottom of koop's post for the hotspot zip file.
