My girlfriend lives in Russia and she been having a ton of issues with her phone.
I guided her thru the phone unlocking bootloader and installing a recovery but she refused to continue my lesson over the phone on helping her install a new rom. So we just left it were it was and this was months ago.
I don't think she has super user access and all I really know is she has CWM installed. She has a system update, but when she tries to install it just goes to CWM. I am not sure what is wrong with her phone, but even after a factory reset, it is slow and things get buggy all the time and lately is been getting worse so I wanted to continue this process of installing a new ROM.
My question is how do I make sure she has bootloader really unlocked, s-off and if its rooted.
I want to continue helping her install a rom but without her being here, I am scared to proceed further without asking the community some questions.

Go to bootloader then see the top. If it says unlocked, well it is. But if you have cwm, 99% the bootloader IS unlocked. (Unless you didn't relock it again). To see if she is rooted, go to the app drswr and search for anything like superuser or superSU. Hope this helped

She does have super user or superSU in the app drawer, but when she tries to use an app that requires root. It is not allowed nor does it ask permission in superSU.

A system update will not proceed with a CWM installed. The OTA update works on a clean Stock ROM only.
There is a new CWM recovery version 6. According to the changelog it should support official OTA update of stock ROM
So she has CWM installed and I wanted to install a new rom, but when I press VOL down + power key it just boots into CWM.
How can I get into fastboot or does this mean I do not have bootloader unlocked?

So, I got a new slide and, of course, I want to root this one as well.
It's asking me to install the new OTA update.
Should I:
1) Ignore it, use the old root method, and install the OTA available here?
2) Install the OTA update and use the new root method?
3) Sacrifice my phone to our dark lord Satan for immortality?

Went ahead and did the old method. Followed by the ENG build. STILL can't go directly to Clockworkmod Recovery. Yargh! Otherwise, all good.

Why bother with the old method?
The new method works on the Original release and the OTa update, is much easier and takes like 10 minutes.
I've done the old method so many times, it's second nature.
Rom Manager continues to fail to boot me into recovery. Probably user error but it's fun to blame them.
I keep reading people who indicate they are able to go straight to Clockworkmod Recovery. Have I been jealous of nothing? OF NOTHING?

So i got the Nexus beast yesterday, and it's already blazing me off with it's greatness. But i got a few problems though:
1. I got the jakjuxw, not the jakju, will i get the same updates as the jakju OTA, but only a week later or so?
2. I did not root the phone before starting using it, but i regret that now. Is there any way i can root it and NOT lose all of my apps and data? I have spent so many hours to customize this device and i dont want to start all over (yes i know about app backup's, but they are slow)
3. If i root but stay with the stock rom, will i still be getting the original OTA updates or does i have to flash the roms manually and wipe the phone every time?
I'd appreciate it if anyone could answer all the questions =)

Not sure about this, it probably depends on what they want to release. I don't think there's any kind of guarantee they'll get the same updates, but there's also probably no reason why they wouldn't.

You need to unlock the bootloader to root, and unlocking the bootloader wipes the device. Sorry. Someday an exploit might be found for ICS that allows you to root without unlocking.

If you keep stock recovery, you'll still get OTA updates when rooted. If you use custom recovery like ClockworkMod, you'll have to do them manually (but you won't need to wipe). In both cases, applying the update will probably cause you to lose root and you'll have to re-root. This is easy if you've unlocked the bootloader.
If you root by using some future exploit, you might find that the update you just installed removed root and closed the hole that allowed you to gain it without unlocking the bootloader, and now you're left stuck without root. I'd say just unlock the bootloader now and be done with it. It'll be a pain, but then you don't need to worry about it again.

Just unlocked it and rooted it, but i think im gonna install the official google 4.0.2 rom, i wil get the OTA updates then too right?
edit: how am i able to flash a rom without CWM? Also do i really not need to wipe my phone if i use CWM? i had to do it on my Desire.

Yes, but the updates will probably unroot you. You should be able to just re-root after. If using CWM you can probably flash superuser right after flashing the update and not lose root at all. This is what I always did with my Nexus One when I still had the rooted stock ROM.

If the ROM comes as images (like the Google factory images) you can flash with fastboot. The Google ones come with a script that uses fastboot to do it for you.
Also do i really not need to wipe my phone if i use CWM? i had to do it on my Desire.

I meant installing updates here... you don't usually need to wipe if you are installing updates to your current ROM, such as OTA updates to the stock ROM. You need to wipe if you're changing ROMs. It's probably no different than your Desire.
I am putting together a quick guide on how to update your Stock ROM, Rooted, custom recovery T-Mo GSIII without having to wipe your phone.
You will need:
- Kies (If your phone has not prompted you to install the OTA yet, Kies will download and attempt to install it for you) (http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c.../20120809103126135/Kies_2.3.2.12074_13_13.exe)
- ODIN 3.7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1270006&stc=1&d=1345396888)
- STOCK T-Mo GSIII recovery.img (I extracted this from the stock ODIN image for T-Mo) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269983&stc=1&d=1345396186)
- TWRP or CWM ODIN Flash-able recovery (CWM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269979&stc=1&d=1345396186 , TWRP - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269980&stc=1&d=1345396186)
- Recovery flashable SuperSU root package (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269984&stc=1&d=1345396186)
SO, place your phone in download mode (Vol Down + Home + Power), and via ODIN, flash the "Stock-Recovery-Image(Working T-Mobile T999).tar" image. ( This is putting the stock recovery back on your phone so the update can install).
When it reboots, either select yes to allow the OTA update to install (if your phone is already aware there is an update) on your phone, OR plug you phone into your PC and allow Kies to prompt you to update your firmware. Select yes and allow the OTA to install.
Once completed, your phone is updated without having to wipe, but you have lost root and customer recovery, so.....
Again, in Download mode, Flash either of the provided ODIN flash-able custom recoveries (TWRP, or CWM) I prefer TWRP
Once that is complete, you can reboot your phone into the new recovery (Vol UP + Home + Power)
Once in recovery, flash the SuperSU.zip package and Voila, all done, Triangle away and you in cool runnings.
Let me know if I need to clarify anything here. It makes sense to me, but then again, I fumbled through it to figure it out and extract the right recoveries and set permissions etc.....

Nice instructions, but I'm going to wait a few days. I'm want to see if the dev that did the flash and root without tripping the flash counter will do the same for the new firmware. I'm still not too keen on custom recoveries yet even though I backed up my IMEI, so I just want to be rooted. If not, I'll use your guide.:good:

But with Wildchild's it's a complete ROM (650-700MB), correct? Are you not wiping when you flash his?
Actually I'm not 100% that you need to do a full wipe, but I'm guessing you probably should. Depends on what's different. You can always nabdroid and give it a shot. I will later if I have time.
Anyway, I was more responding to the post above mine about stock with root than to the op. Sorry if shoulda been a little more clear on that.

What did you have to modify to get them working? Like I said before, I made this little method so you did not have to wipe your phone to get the OTA installed.
The only thing I could see that would cause the OTA to break wallet, or Google now would be that if you have to modify pieces in the /system/ directory that would be overwritten. The only thing I had to do after updating was re-flash my little installer for international boot image, re-remove Carrier IQ as it was added back, and revert the googlesearch.apk to the earlier backed up version (functioning unified search) with titanium. Outside of that I run a pretty tight ship as far as system modifications go outside of root and root privileged programs.

I tried several times but couldent unroot my phone. I even tried through the root kit by mskip. I think the problem may be that I got my phone unlocked, not using an unlock code but some other method (all I know about this method is that my phone says"restricted access" for a few seconds upon restarting.)
Any suggestions on how to unroot? Also, if I unroot, will I loose the unlock?

I think the best method to unroot your phone will be to ODIN it back to the stock T-Mobile image. (Overwrites EVERYTHING, probably your unlock as well).

I would assume the build.prop file will be overwritten. So its possible you would need to modify after updating. May not be any way around it.
If you want to test for others, make nandroid backup , upgrade and test. If it works, update us. If not, update us

Well if it doesn't work (Which I think it won't), you don't need to worry about restoring root. You just need to flash a custom recovery to revert your nandroid backup. Your root and customization will come back with that.
But with some of the added features that come with the update, I would say don't look back. Upgrade to the latest, then reapply your customization to get wallet and all working again.
IF you have to revert your nandroid back, make sure to do a factory wipe before you revert to your backup.

I've used two different versions of Odin and two different T-Mobile stock recoveries (other one is here), and I can't get stock recovery to replace CWM on my GS3. Odin reports that the flash is successful, but when it reboots, ROM Manager still shows me as having latest CWM Touch, and the T-Mo update fails. I'm attempting the update via Kies right now, but I anticipate failure due to CWM still being installed as recovery.
-- I have Cerberus anti-theft installed, but I don't see anything about protecting recovery.
-- I have Busybox installed, but that shouldn't affect recovery.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Interestingly enough, where the OTA update failed, the Kies update went smooth as silk. Now to re-root and remove bloatware!

Im unable to update. I used Odin to flash the stock recovery, then downloaded the update via settings-> about device-> software update. Installing reboots the phone but then fails and reverts to current state. I can't update through kies also bc it just says "connecting", no errors. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers but kies never completes connecting. Any help?

EDIT: I uninstalled all my samsung drivers and Kies from "Programs and Features" in win7, deleted Samsung folders from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Reinstalled Kies and connected my phone to install the drivers. Kies was stuck in the connecting loop still, so I unmounted my sd card, turned on USB debugging and Kies finally connected and asked to upgrade. Upgrading at this moment.

Currently i'm using an HTC One M8 rooted and running on a stock rom, and TWRP as a recovery, can i still have OTA updates in my phone even if I'm on root and TWRP as a recovery. also one thing how can go remove TWRP recovery or revert to HTC recovery

1. Download the stock recovery for your device from the recovery thread
2. Flash it through fastboot (as you did TWRP)
3. Apply the OTA
4. Reflash TWRP
5. Re-root the phone

and i can't find my stock rom, my software number is 1.54.707.7

Remember (as said a million times already in multiple threads) - to flash an OTA you CANNOT have changed anything in the original system (fonts, Xposed mods, removing system apps, ANYTHING) otherwise the OTA WILL FAIL
i've browse mr.hofs thread and i've seen lots of stock recoveries. I don't know which stock recovery will I use.
I tried to match it using my software number 1.54.707.7 but there is none. or should i just try the closer to that version?
also another question? can i flash my stock recovery using Hasoon2000's AIO Toolkit? i see here on the left box it's says your own recovery.

Yes, you can! I did it exactly that way - and after OTA update reflashed TWRP and rerouted that way. Its a 4 minute job.

Learn to do it yourself, relying on toolkits is a false economy as if anything goes wrong you'll have no idea how to fix it...

Yes, that has been mentioned quite a few times in various threads..However one question that pops up now is:
Lets says I did make changes to the system files by removing a system app or using xposed mods (but not flashing any custom roms). But these changes were made AFTER taking a backup of (unchanged) stock recovery. Will OTA still fail if i now flash stock recovery and then ota update? I am guessing it should work as i am bringing the phone back to stock status.
Also what if i do not flash any custom recovery, I just boot into it to take a backup and remain in stock rom. In that case, for an OTA update, do i still need to first flash stock recovery if I have not made changes to sys files?
Finally when you say OTA fail, does that mean there is a chance I will brick/soft brick my phone?or is it just an error message. I ask because in case i make changes to sys and then forget about it or do not realise its consequence for an OTA update, its better I know now what I am getting into.

The OTA requires a 100% stock running Android build, so if you have removed any system apps it will just fail and reboot to the ROM you're running at the moment (so you should be safe). Basically, if the /system partition on the phone is ANY way different from how it was when you first bought it the OTA will fail
For example, other than S-OFF my phone is exactly how I received it, therefore the new OTA update installed successfully. If I had removed one system app (e.g. Hangouts), it would fail as it's looking for it and if it can't find it it'll just reboot
i still have my S-OFF here in my HTC, and i haven't removed any system apps. i'll try this later this week.
i just needed my root because of setCPU nothing else.

If you're now on 1.54.401.10, you can manually extract it from the firmware package I uploaded HERE

Also, unlocking the bootloader also ate my calculator and torch apps, and I reinstalled them as user apps instead of system apps.
Well, after flashing the stock recovery, the OTA worked like a charm. I applied it manually from the stock recovery, but I don't think this makes a difference. I had to re-root afterwards, but all the rest was preserved.
I am S-OFF though. Is that the reason why it bypassed some security checks?

I can see the apps that were removed during unlocking still working if installed as user apps as they're still on the /data partition. If they weren't there at all then it'd probably fail. Surprised that it worked with Xposed installed, but that's also a user app so it could very well work - logically it makes sense.
As a rule of thumb I'd only apply an OTA on a 100% stock system, that way you know it'll all be fine
I am finally ready to sunshine s off. I have a rooted M8, running twrp boot loader. What do I have to do to obtain s off via sunshine? I kind of remember you must have a stock boot loader. I do not want to loose anything on my phone or it to be reset, or will running sunshine whipe my phone?

normally these kind of questions would go into the Q&A section. First you would need to install superSU from the playstore. Second you'll need the firewater file plus ADB ready. Third there should be a youtube video showing the steps on how to get S-OFF. Fourth congrats on being S-OFF. Nothing will get erased to my memory but backup in case.
You must not confuse terms like stock bootloader and such
You need :
Stock rooted rom
Stock kernel
Stock recovery
Your bootloader is always "stock" there is no twrp bootloader. TWRP is a recovery. And sunshine comes as an application.
And please do not use videos that are often out of date (or will be soon) just follow the procedures on the sunshine developers website !!!

If its important to you, back it up. This should be a rule under any circumstance, much more so when modding the phone.
I have achieved s off , however I am unable to install any custom roms. All I get is successful install then back to recovery. I have a nandroid backup saved, so I can go right back. I also tried updating this stock Rom and it won't let me, just says it installs then phone restarts and nothing has changed. What anni doing wrong?

OTA's need stock recovery, so i would guess that is your problem with updates, what error did you get when you tried.
also what error do you get in TWRP when you try to flash a custom rom, also which rom are you trying to install.
follow the guides around here and there should be no problem at all.

For issues with ROMs not flashing correctly, fastboot erase cache and install recovery again (make sure its the latest version) will often fix it.
Also, make sure its a ROM that supports Sprint, as there are many that do not.
